Derek Rabelo is not the only surfer to conquer Hawaii's famous Pipeline big wave break, but while all others use their sight to do it,this young professional surfer must rely only on his other senses. That's because he is completely blind.
When Derek was born, over 24 years ago,he got his name from Derek Ho,the first Hawaiian surfing world champion.A surfing enthusiast himself,Ernesto dreamed that his son would share the talent of his uncle,a professional surfer.Unfortunately,Derek was born completely blind, but this didn't stop his family from believing that he could do anything he wanted, even if that meant becoming a surfer.
At age 2,Derek received a bodyboard and the beaches of Guarapari,Brazil, became his backyard. He was always comfortable in the water and surfing was in his blood, but he didn't actually try riding a wave until he turned 17,when his father bought him a surfboard. His father taught him the basics and encouraged him to keep practicing, but after successfully standing up on the surfboard,Derek knew he needed to become much better if he was going to achieve Ernesto's dream and become a professional surfer. So he joined the Praia do Morro surf school, where he studied under coach Fabio Maru.
Standing up on a surfboard and conquering small waves is one thing, while gathering the courage to take on Hawaii's boardbreaking Pipeline is another. But that's exactly what Derek Rabelo set out to do just months after learning how to surf.Everyone told him it was too dangerous, but he felt he could do it.And he did, earning the praise of famous professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Now 24,Rabelo has been surfing the Pipeline every winter since.

It is back to school time in much of the world.Calm, easy mornings are replaced with busy, hurried ones.Children wake up early and get ready for school. Many parents are also getting ready for work, helping their children and preparing food for lunches. But,don't forget about breakfast!
Welsh study
These are the findings of a 2015 study in Wales.Researchers looked at 5,000 9~11yearolds from more than 100 primary schools in the UK.They looked at what the students ate for breakfast and then their grades 6 to 18 months later.
They found that the students who ate a healthy breakfast were twice as likely to perform above average in educational activities. The researchers also found that unhealthy breakfasts—such as potato chips or a donut did not appear helpful to educational performance.
What is a healthy breakfast?
Health experts suggest that the best breakfast is a mix of complex carbohydrates(糖类),protein(蛋白质)and fat. This gives your body the energy it needs to think clearly and to remember what it learns.
They found that when it comes to giving the brain what it needs to work at its highest level—not all breakfasts are created equal.
Health experts suggest not eating too much for breakfast. This can also make a person feel tired and unable to think clearly. They say eating between 350 and 500 calories in the morning is a good amount of energy to start the day.
Breakfast is not just good for students.
A good breakfast is not just helpful for schoolaged children. We all may gain from eating something healthy in the morning.
A study from researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada found that a breakfast rich in protein and complex carbohydrates increased performance on shortterm and longterm memory.Carbohydrates and protein are especially important because they have a major effect on longterm memory.

We often hear that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”.It's a common belief that starting the day with a meal is necessary for our energy and health. But is this really true?
The word “breakfast” means “breaking the fast” after a night without eating. ____1____ Breakfast provides a perfect opportunity to refill these usedup resources, such as protein and calcium(钙).Scientific studies often support this idea. They show a link between eating breakfast and better weight management. One large study found that breakfast eaters typically had a lower BMI. ____2____

____4____ In fact, skipping breakfast is part of a popular eating pattern. This eating pattern has been shown to offer benefits like improved blood sugar control and lower blood pressure.
So,what should we do? The answer may be different among people. ____5____ For others, skipping it might suit their bodies better. What truly matters is keeping a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle overall seems to be far more important than focusing on any single meal.
A.They never miss their breakfast to stay in good shape.
B.While we sleep, our bodies use stored nutrients for repair.
C.For some,a morning meal provides energy and prevents overeating later.

G.Interestingly, skipping breakfast isn't always viewed negatively.
1.B [上文“The word ‘breakfast’ means ‘breaking the fast’ after a night without eating.(‘breakfast’一词的意思是打破夜间不进食的禁食状态。)”解释了“breakfast”意为打破夜间禁食;而下文“Breakfast provides a perfect opportunity to refill these usedup resources, such as protein and calcium(钙).(早餐是补充这些消耗掉的蛋白质和钙等营养的绝佳机会。)” B“While we sleep, our bodies use stored nutrients for repair.(睡眠时,我们的身体会消耗储存的营养来进行修复。)”
2.F [上文“One large study found that breakfast eaters typically had a lower BMI.(一项大型研究发现,吃早餐的人通常体重指数更低。)” F“This has led many health experts to actively recommend a healthy breakfast for weight control.(这使得许多健康专家积极推荐健康早餐,将其作为体重控制的一种方式。)”
3.E [上文“Some experts believe other factors are more important.Professor Alexandra Johnstone, for instance, suggests that people who often don't eat breakfast are usually less likely to know about good nutrition(营养).(一些专家认为其他因素更为重要。例如,Alexandra Johnstone教授指出,经常不吃早餐的人通常更不了解良好的营养知识。)”指出不吃早餐的人通常更不了解良好营养;而下文“They are also more likely to exercise regularly and avoid harmful habits like smoking.(他们也更有可能规律锻炼,并避免吸烟等有害习惯。)” E“Meanwhile, breakfast eaters may lead a healthier lifestyle in general.(与此同时,吃早餐的人总体上可能拥有更健康的生活方式。)”
下文“In fact, skipping breakfast is part of a popular eating pattern. This eating pattern has been shown to offer benefits like improved blood sugar control and lower blood pressure.(事实上,不吃早餐是一种流行的饮食模式。这种饮食模式已被证实具有诸多益处,比如改善血糖控制和降低血压。)”转折提到不吃早餐是一种流行的饮食模式,且有改善血糖控制、降低血压等益处。选项G“Interestingly, skipping breakfast isn't always viewed negatively.(有趣的是,不吃早餐并非总是被负面看待。)”以“有趣的是”引出转折,点明不吃早餐并非总是被负面看待,恰好衔接前后文的态度转变,开启对不吃早餐正面影响的论述。]
5.C [上文“The answer may be different among people.(答案可能因人而异。)” 而下文“For others, skipping it might suit their bodies better.(对另一些人来说,不吃早餐可能更适合自己的身体。)” C“For some,a morning meal provides energy and prevents overeating later.(对一些人来说,早餐能提供能量,还能防止后续暴饮暴食。)”
