Poyang Lake, located in northern Jiangxi Province, is the largest freshwater lake in China. It’s also the second largest lake in the country, second only to Qinghai Lake.
Long ago, during the Tang Dynasty, the lake was at its biggest, covering about 6,000 square kilometres. Today, it is just around 3,150 square kilometres. The size of Poyang Lake also changes a lot throughout the year. In summer, it is like a huge inland sea. By winter, it almost disappears.
Because of the natural cycle (周期), the lake is home to many animals. The Yangtze finless porpoise (长江江豚), an endangered freshwater animal, lives in the water. Also, hundreds of birds spend the winter in its wetlands every year. However, the wet areas are getting smaller. This makes it hard for animals living there to survive.
Luckily, local people are taking action to meet the challenge. The story of Yuan Wenbin is a great example. Yuan used to fish in Poyang Lake for a living. When he noticed that the Yangtze finless porpoises were disappearing, he was worried. He stopped full-time fishing and asked his neighbours to protect the animals together. However, they didn’t take it seriously at first.
“For a long time, I felt like I was the only one who cared,” Yuan said. He wasn’t sure if his work would make a difference. However, he didn’t give up. Day by day, Yuan’s actions inspired more community members. They started joining him to watch over the lake in 2017.
Now, Poyang Lake is becoming more friendly to wildlife. Many visitors come to visit it. “I just hope our hard work can encourage more people to protect the lake we depend on,” Yuan said.

30.What is the passage mainly about?

Every week, a group of students from Cherry Creek High School come to help old people with anything technology-related (技术相关的) at an old people’s home. The volunteers are from a group called Generation Technology, and it was set up by students a few years ago.
When the holidays come, the group helps the old keep connected (保持联系) with their loved ones. “A lot of people don’t live close to their family, and it’s a big problem that we should pay attention to. So setting up video communication and then bringing people closer during the holidays is meaningful,” said Sunker, the leader of the group.
The students also give the old advice on preventing scams (预防诈骗). People often get strange calls that they can’t recognize (识别) and the students can give them some useful advice. It’s something that the old like Sandy Washington are thankful for. “I do have difficulty using modern technology,” Sandy Washington said. “And I think a lot of other old people here do too, you know, at our age.”
Whether the students are helping with video communication or teaching the old to use new apps on their phones, they’re both about helping form strong intergenerational (代与代之间的) connections. For Sandy Washington, seeing the students every week is something she looks forward to. “We really welcome these kids,” she said. “I want to hear about their college interests and preferred schools. The Popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicine Around the World Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of over 2,000 years. It is an important part of Chinese culture. In recent years, TCM has become more and more popular around the world. People from different countries are showing great interest in TCM, such as acupuncture (针灸), cupping (拔火罐) and herbal medicine (草药).
One of the reasons for TCM’s popularity is its effectiveness in treating some diseases. For example, acupuncture is often used to treat pain, insomnia (失眠) and stress. Many people who have tried acupuncture say it works well. Cupping, another traditional therapy (疗法), is used to improve blood circulation (血液循环) and relieve muscle pain. During the 2016 Rio Olympics, the American swimmer Michael Phelps was seen with purple cupping marks on his body, which made cupping famous all over the world.
Another reason is that TCM pays attention to the balance of the human body. TCM believes that the human body is a whole, and illness is caused by the imbalance of yin and yang (阴阳). TCM doctors treat patients by adjusting this balance. They may use herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage or other therapies. Unlike Western medicine, which often focuses on treating specific symptoms (症状), TCM focuses on the overall health of the patient.
In addition, TCM is becoming more accepted because of the increasing exchange between China and other countries. Many TCM colleges and hospitals have been set up around the world. For example, in Australia, there are many TCM clinics (诊所) that provide acupuncture and herbal medicine services. In the United States, some universities offer courses on TCM. More and more people are learning about TCM and recognizing its value.
However, TCM still faces some challenges. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of international standards (标准) for TCM products and therapies. This makes it difficult for TCM to be widely accepted in some countries. Another challenge is the shortage of qualified TCM doctors. To solve these problems, China has been working hard to promote the standardization (标准化) of TCM and train more TCM professionals.
Despite the challenges, TCM has a bright future. As people pay more attention to natural and healthy ways of treating diseases, TCM will continue to spread around the world and make greater contributions to human health.
36.How long is the history of TCM?
A.Over 1,000 years. B.Over 2,000 years. C.Over 3,000 years. D.Over 4,000 years.
37.Which of the following is NOT a TCM therapy mentioned in the passage?
A.Acupuncture. B.Cupping. C.Herbal medicine. D.Surgery.

D.Because it is widely used in Western countries.

A cute animal with four legs? Actually, dogs are much more than that! There are many secrets about them. Let’s take a closer look into the world of dogs and learn more about them. Dogs are famous for their great senses. With over 100 million scent cells (嗅觉细胞), dogs can smell thousands of scents. And they can hear sounds from farther away than humans because of their special ear shape. These abilities make dogs important in many places. For example, in places like train stations and airports, police dogs can find out dangerous things like drugs and bombs. And for blind people, guide dogs are very helpful. They can help them “see” and travel around safely.
Just like humans, most dogs have a favourite paw. They might be right-pawed or left-pawed. To figure out which paw your dog prefers, you can watch it walk and see which paw it usually puts forward first. Dogs not only walk on paws, but also sweat through them. Because of this, their paws are easy to get dirty with bacteria (细菌), and sometimes they even give off a popcorn-like smell.
Dogs have many ways to communicate. One way they do this is by smelling each other’s butts (屁股). The special smell can help dogs learn about others’ gender ♀♂, feelings, and health. Dogs also use body language to “show” their feelings. For example, they may turn in circles to say hello or hold their tails between their legs when they are afraid or sad.
