For over a decade, the Penrod and Jolley families from American Fork have been running a hot chocolate and cookie stand that donates to Primary Children’s Hospital. The tradition has become a neighborhood favorite.
The stand began with young Jefferson Penrod, eager to make a difference.
“When I was in the third grade, my teacher, Mr. Durrant, gave everyone a $2 bill to do something good. He called it the $2 experiment,” Jefferson explained. “In my little third-grade mind, I thought, ‘I’ll buy some cups with this $2 and have my parents make hot chocolate. Then, I’ll make a hot chocolate stand and use the money I’ve made to buy gifts for kids at Primary Children’s.’ I was born premature (早产的) and had to visit the hospital a lot.”
As long-time family friends, the Penrods decided to host the stand in memory of Hannah Jolley. “In 2016, my little sister passed away at Primary Children’s,” said Emma Jolley. “That sparked (引起) my family to join because they decided to do it in her honor. Since then, my family has always been a part of it.”
With the money earned, the families bought toys for the children at the hospital. “The first year, we made $100, which was cool,” Jefferson said. “The next year, we thought, ‘Let’s do it again.’ ”
Each year since then, the stand has grown. Hundreds come to support the cause and gather as a community. “It’s not really a fundraiser. It’s more of an event and tradition for our neighborhood. It’s something that brings people together. We are doing it because it shows how people can come together for something greater,” Jefferson said.
The Penrod and Jolley families hope to continue the tradition and pass it along to whoever is willing to help.
24. What inspired Jefferson to start the stand at first?
A. His family’s tradition of charity. B. His desire to pay for his hospital bill.
C. His school project on community service. D. His teacher’s practice of encouraging kindness.
25. Why did the Jolley family join the stand?
A. To meet Hannah’s wish. B. To honor their late Hannah.
C. To support the Penrods’ fundraising goal. D. To celebrate their long-standing friendship.
26. What does Jefferson think of the event?
A. It benefits his own business. B. It is mainly about raising money.
C. It is a way to show community spirit. D. It offers a chance to promote local culture.
27. Which statement is in line with the passage?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. What goes around comes around.
C. Praise the bridge that carries you over. D. Small beginnings lead to great things.

Classics are the gems (宝石) of the literary world. For years, people have read them to gain knowledge. But now, an increasing number of people instead enjoy these classics in online video series.
According to a 2023 report by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 percent year-on-year. As people become busier in competitive social environments, the brief literary explanations provided in short videos enable some to experience stories from a fresh perspective in fleeting moments. “I watch them on the subway, in a queue or before bed. Short videos combine text, images and expressions, providing a better experience than just reading text alone,” a man surnamed Zhang told Xinhua.
The fearsome length and complexity (复杂性) of classics are also reasons why some people, especially teenagers, are turning to literature vloggers (video bloggers) for help. A Dream of Red Mansions is well-known for its detailed description of Chinese society, colorful characters and poetic language. It explores themes like family, society and human nature. However, these very qualities make the novel challenging for some students, who find it boring or even sleep-inducing (困倦的) . “There are so many characters in the novel, which confused me a lot,” said 12-year-old ShaoXinyan from Hubei. “Some vloggers use a mind map to clearly show their relationship.”
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and concerns. For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey in which people form a personal connection with the text, not just absorbing facts. “Books that inspire my imagination, like fantasy adventures and historical stories, demand a deeper connection. Videos, although convenient, can’t fully present the small details of a well-written story,” said Zhang. Eighteen-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may decrease readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”
28. Why do more people turn to short videos for classic literature?
A. Short videos save time and offer vivid experiences.
B. Classic books are often too out-of-date to be popular.
C. They’re lacking in the motivation of reading completely.
D. Video platforms provide more and more book-related content.
29. What makes A Dream of Red Mansions challenging for some students?
A. Its unfamiliar themes and brief description. B. Its focus on ancient social culture in China.
C. Its poetic language and various characters. D. Its unique writing features and target readers.
30. What is Zhang Boren’s opinion on enjoying classics via videos?
A. Videos contribute more to inspiring imagination. B. Reading books increases readers’ independence.
C. Reading books for readers is only to absorb facts. D. Videos are unlikely to contain all original details.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. “Watch” the Classics B. “Update” the Videos
C. “Approach” Literature D. “Play” with Vloggers
D
Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
32.What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Repaired. B.Protected. C.Used. D.Abandoned.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A.E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B.E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C.Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D.Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
34.How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A.By providing data. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing examples. D.By offering a definition.
35.What might the author continue to talk about?
A.Solutions to destroying e-waste. B.Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C.Applications of recycled materials. D.Investments in restoring ecosystems.

Training to Run a Marathon
Participating in a marathon should be a fun, rewarding and safe experience. However, preparing for a marathon requires a lot of time, discipline and commitment. 36 Luckily, you can do something to get the most out of your marathon training.
The surface you choose for running plays a significant role.
The type of surface you run on can impact your training and, in some cases, contribute to injuries. Every runner has their own preference about running on what kind of surface. However, too hard or too soft surfaces can lead to injuries. 37
You must warm up and cool down.
Warming up and cooling down should not be skipped. During a warm-up, you prepare your heart, lungs, and muscles for each training run. 38 As soon as you finish a workout or race, you should begin cooling down, which helps your body recover and prepares it for its next workout.
Alternate (交替) easy and hard training days.
39 However, one basic principle that applies to all runners is to alternate easy days of training with hard days, which include long runs or speed work. For instance, you never want to run two hard days in a row, even if you recently missed a day of training.· 40
One important aspect of your marathon training is the last 21 days before the marathon. During this time, you should run less and rest a lot more by reducing your weekly and long run mileage (里程). This allows you to fully recover from the previous workouts and prepare for the actual marathon.
A.Timing the training is recommended.
B.Both have strengths and weaknesses.
C.It can last anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes.
D.You should reduce workout intensity before the race.
E.Your individual training schedule depends on your level.
F.This is especially true if you are running your first marathon.
G.The safest ones are those that are reasonably smooth and level.

It was the late 1930s,and things were tough.Mom had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.
Looking back,I realize what Mom went though sending us kids to school.Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底) were worn out. When we got home,Mom would have “French toast” ready for us.Constant moving was typical for my family in those times.Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mom couldn’t pay it,and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any,he issued the cheque to Mom.Mom said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back the rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mom,I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots.Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles.I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.I was excited,as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house,we had no lights,no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies.I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

D 25. B 26. C 27. D
根据第三段中““When I was in the third grade, my teacher, Mr. Durrant, gave everyone a $2 bill to do something good. He called it the $2 experiment,” Jefferson explained. “In my little third-grade mind, I thought, ‘I’ll buy some cups with this $2 and have my parents make hot chocolate.( “在我三年级的时候,我的老师杜兰特先生给了每个人一张2美元的钞票,让大家去做件好事。他称之为‘2美元实验’,” 杰佛森解释道。“在我那懵懂的三年级思维里,我想,‘我会用这2美元买一些杯子,然后让我的父母做热巧克力。)”可知,杰佛森最初创办小摊的灵感,来自老师发起的2美元善意实验——老师给每人2美元鼓励大家做善事,这一行为让他萌生了摆热巧克力摊做公益的想法。故选D项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中““In 2016, my little sister passed away at Primary Children’s,” said Emma Jolley. “That sparked (引起) my family to join because they decided to do it in her honor. 【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中““It’s not really a fundraiser. It’s more of an event and tradition for our neighborhood. It’s something that brings people together. We are doing it because it shows how people can come together for something greater,” Jefferson said.( “这其实不是一场募捐活动。

While reading with videos helps many people some express different opinions and concerns.
A 29. C 30. D 31. A
根据第二段中“As people become busier in competitive social environments, the brief literary explanations provided in short videos enable some to experience stories from a fresh perspective in flying moments. (在竞争激烈的社会环境中,人们变得越来越忙,短视频提供的简短文学讲解让一些人能够在碎片时间里从新鲜的角度体验故事。)”可知,短视频因其省时、生动而受欢迎。故选A。
根据第三段中“A Dream of Red Mansions is well-known for its detailed description of Chinese society, colorful characters and poetic language. (《红楼梦》以其对中国社会的细致描写、丰富多彩的人物和诗意的语言而闻名。)” 可知,《红楼梦》因其诗意的语言和众多人物而具有挑战性。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Videos, although convenient, can't fully present the small details of a well-written story, ”said Zhang.
通读全文,结合第一段“Classics are the gems (宝石) of the literary world. For years, people have read them to gain knowledge. But now, an increasing number of people instead enjoy these classics in online video series.(经典著作是文学界的瑰宝。多年来,人们通过阅读它们来获取知识。但现在,越来越多的人转而在网络剧集里欣赏这些经典作品。)”可知,本文主要讨论了人们通过短视频“观看”经典文学作品的新趋势,因此“Watch the Classics”最适合作为标题。故选A。
根据第一段“This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. (这包括被discarded的电气或电子设备。但它们都去哪儿了呢?仅在美国,每年就有1亿部手机、4100万台电脑和2000多万台电视机被扔进垃圾填埋场)”可知,每年都有大量的电气或电子设备被扔进垃圾填埋场,这些设备都是被丢弃的,所以discarded意思是“丢弃”,与“Abandoned”意思相近。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段“Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modem devices.
根据第三段“In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
根据最后一段“It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.

36.根据上文“However, preparing for a marathon requires a lot of time, discipline and commitment.(然而,准备马拉松需要大量的时间、自律和投入)”以及下文“Luckily, you can do something to get the most out of your marathon training.(幸运的是,你可以做一些事情来充分利用你的马拉松训练)”可知,此处应衔接上文准备马拉松的难度,进一步强调其挑战性,F选项“This is especially true if you are running your first marathon.(如果你是第一次跑马拉松,情况尤其如此)”中的This指代上文提到的准备马拉松的高要求,引出下文的解决办法。
37.根据上文“Every runner has their own preference about running on what kind of surface. However, too hard or too soft surfaces can lead to injuries.(每个跑步者对跑步的路面都有自己的偏好。然而,太硬或太软的路面都可能导致受伤)”可知,此处应承接上文的路面问题,给出安全路面的建议,G选项“The safest ones are those that are reasonably smooth and level.(最安全的路面是那些相当平坦且水平的路面)”明确安全路面的特征。
38.根据上文“During a warm-up, you prepare your heart, lungs, and muscles for each training run.(在热身过程中,你为每次训练跑做好心脏、肺部和肌肉的准备)”可知,此处应补充热身的相关细节,C选项“It can last anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes.(它可以持续5到60分钟不等)”中的It指代上文的warm-up,说明热身的持续时间,衔接上文。
39.根据下文“However, one basic principle that applies to all runners is to alternate easy days of training with hard days, which include long runs or speed work.(然而,适用于所有跑步者的一个基本原则是将轻松训练日与高强度训练日交替进行,高强度训练日包括长距离跑或速度训练)”可知,此处应与下文的“基本原则”形成转折,体现不同跑步者的训练差异,E选项“Your individual training schedule depends on your level.(你个人的训练计划取决于你的水平)”既说明训练计划的个体差异,又通过However衔接下文的通用原则。
40.根据下文“One important aspect of your marathon training is the last 21 days before the marathon. During this time, you should run less and rest a lot more by reducing your weekly and long run mileage.(马拉松训练的一个重要方面是马拉松前的最后21天。在这段时间里,你应该减少跑步次数,多休息,减少每周的跑步里程和长距离跑步里程)”可知,此处应概括该段核心内容——赛前减少训练强度,D选项“You should reduce workout intensity before the race.(你应该在比赛前降低训练强度)”点明段落主旨。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As I continued walking I began to reconsider my plan. Staring at the warm twinkling lights from every household, I thought of Mom’s exhausted face and our bare, cold house. She had sacrificed everything to keep us sheltered and fed all year round. The new boots I longed for suddenly seemed trivial. I made up my mind to spend my hard-earned money on Christmas gifts for my family instead. I hurried to the grocery store and bought Christmas decorations, a small turkey and some sweet treats to fill our empty home.
With great excitement and tears in my eyes,I knocked on the door. As Mom opened the door, she was stunned to see my gifts. I told her all I’d done and how I hoped to give our family a warm Christmas. A bright smile spread across her tired face. Though we still lived in poverty, love and warmth filled our little house that Christmas Eve, becoming the most precious memory in my life.
