My cousin, 36, turned a childhood passion into a profession. She is now a master bamboo weaver (织工), founder of her own company.
She loved handicrafts from an early age. She gave up a kindergarten teaching position at about 18 and became an apprentice in traditional bamboo weaving. Her father said, “If she hits a wall, she’ll build a ladder to climb over it. Once she makes up her mind, she sees it through.”
Bamboo weaving is a traditional craft that transforms thin bamboo strips (条) into practical and decorative items. Her early days did not go smoothly. She struggled to control the knife, often misjudging the pressure and cutting her hands. Sometimes she kept working even while bleeding. Day by day, the techniques became second nature.
As her skills developed, she pioneered a range of 3D weaving techniques and studied at art schools to bring contemporary design ideas into her work. In 2012, she founded her brand. Its bamboo paintings, handbags, and lamps soon gained popularity. She has taken part in handicraft making contest, and dozens of medals line the walls of her studio.
Turning craftsmanship into a successful business required new skills. In addition to refining her designs and mixing traditional techniques with modern aesthetics (审美), she learned production management, online promotion and livestreaming. Her shop in a local scenic area generates tens of thousands of yuan monthly while providing villagers with piecework wages.
She welcomes young people interested in intangible cultural heritage. “Be brave enough to be yourself and turn your passion into a career,” she said. Her love for the craft is what has carried her through each challenge.
4. How did she improve her skills?
A. By maintaining traditional methods. B. By giving up her childhood dreams.
C. Through online courses and videos. D. Through hard work and further study.
5. What did she do to help her local community?
A. She provided jobs for villagers.
B. She built a factory in the scenic area.
C. She taught young people to start brands.
D. She promoted her hometown through livestreaming.
6. Which of the following best describes the weaver?
A. Generous and modest. B. Determined and creative.
C. Ambitious but impatient. D. Talented but cautious.
7. What does her story show?
A. No pains, no gains.
B. Look before you leap.
C. Many hands make light work.
D. East or west, home is the best.

C
A robot inspired by desert tumbleweeds (风滚草) may become a new generation of energy-efficient explorers rolling into future disaster zones.
“The inspiration struck me on a windy winter afternoon along the shores of Lake Neuchâtel,” said Sanjay Manoharan. “I was watching kite surfers use the wind to carve beautiful arcs (弧线) and achieve effortless lifts. Yet, I realized nature had already perfected this art long before us.”
The tumbleweed is famous for its efficiency. Despite appearing like a seemingly random mass of twigs (细枝), the plants use wind to travel large distances and spread seeds as moving along on their journeys. In fact, they work so well that ecologists are trying to control them due to their tendency to turn into wildfire risks.
Manoharan and his research group investigated how the plant moves so easily, despite generating more air resistance than a solid ball. The results revealed an unexpected, previously undocumented structural feature of tumbleweeds: the plant remains are spongier on the “top” than they are on their “bottom”. “In the upright position, the upper half, being porous, allowed airflow to pass through freely. In contrast, the lower half was tightly packed and thus offered greater resistance,” the study’s authors explained.
Scientists included these findings in a robotic design printed using 3D laser molding. Their creation named HERMES was far more efficient than either natural tumbleweeds or artificial balls. In field testing, HERMES successfully moved through sharp slopes. During maze tests, it used 48 percent less energy than a robot requiring constant control, and finished the maze 37 percent faster.
With additional advancements and small adjustments, robots like HERMES could one day be sent into dangerous disaster zones, deadly minefields, and even on windy neighboring planets like Mars.
8. Why are ecologists attempting to control tumbleweeds?
A. Because they tend to cause fires.
B. Because they spread seeds too quickly.
C. Because they look like a random of twigs.
D. Because they travel too fast and block paths.
9. What does the underlined word “porous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Solid. B. Holey. C. Soft. D. Thick.
10. What can we learn about HERMES?
A. It requires no energy to operate.
B. It demands constant human control.
C. It performs better in energy use and speed.
D. It has the same structure as natural tumbleweeds.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. HERMES: An Energy-Efficient Robot in Use
B. HERMES: A Nature-Inspired Robot for Future Explorations
C. Tumbleweeds: A Wind-Driven Traveler That Spreads Seeds
D. Tumbleweeds: A Natural Model for Energy-Efficient Design
A 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第三段中的“In fact, they work so well that ecologists are trying to control them due to their tendency to turn into wildfire risks. (事实上,它们繁殖扩散效果极佳,以至于生态学家正尝试管控它们,因为它们容易成为野火隐患。)”可知,生态学家想要管控风滚草,是因为这类植物容易引发火灾。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“In the upright position, the upper half, being porous, allowed airflow to pass through freely. In contrast, the lower half was tightly packed and thus offered greater resistance. (在直立状态下,植株上半部分呈 porous,可让气流自由通过。相比之下,下半部分结构紧实,空气阻力更大。)”可知,该词与“tightly packed and thus offered greater resistance (结构紧实、阻力大)”形成对比,结合气流可自由通过的语境可推断,该词意为“多孔透气的”,与Holey意义相近。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“During maze tests, it used 48 percent less energy than a robot requiring constant control, and finished the maze 37 percent faster. (在迷宫测试中,它比需要持续操控的机器人节能百分之四十八,完成迷宫任务的速度快百分之三十七。)”可知,HERMES机器人在能耗控制和运行速度上表现更优异。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是首段中的“A robot inspired by desert tumbleweeds (风滚草) may become a new generation of energy-efficient explorers rolling into future disaster zones. (一款受沙漠风滚草启发的机器人或许能成为新一代节能探测装置,奔赴未来各类受灾区域。)”可知,文章围绕仿生风滚草机器人HERMES展开,介绍其研发灵感、性能优势与未来勘探用途,所以“HERMES: A Nature-Inspired Robot for Future Explorations (HERMES:一款取材自然、面向未来探测任务的机器人)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。
D
What do you read? And why? A few decades ago, these weren’t urgent questions. Reading was an ordinary human activity — moving your eyes across a page at your own pace.
Today, AI is changing how we engage with books and how much we value reading as a human activity. AI can “read” massive amounts of data and then create summaries, analyses or comparisons of books and articles at the click of a button. Need to read a novel for class? You can probably just ask AI for main ideas instead.
According to economist Tyler Cowen, AI’s role as a “reader” does have positives. Different from human readers, AI can reconstruct a writer’s thinking, translating it into more accessible language. This allows future readers to engage with a writer’s thoughts easily, without having to read big, old, forgotten books or hunt down other books for extensive summaries.
However, AI that can summarize a thick book in seconds poses a direct challenge to deep reading. Studies have shown that reading helps with brain growth in children and slows cognitive decline. When people let AI do cognitive work for them, they begin a process known as cognitive offloading. Research reveals that the more users rely on AI, the less they use their own thinking skills. The cognitive offloading of reading may also prevent the development of neural pathways connected with focus and reasoning.
“Cognitive skills aren’t the only thing at stake when we rely too heavily on AI to do reading work,” writes Professor Naomi S. Baron. “We also miss out on so much of what makes reading enjoyable — encountering a moving piece of dialogue, relishing a turn of phrase, connecting with a character.”
At a time when people are already spending less time with books, AI’s efficiency may seem attractive, but it can also weaken both the pleasure and the value of deep reading.
12. Why does the author mention the two questions in paragraph 1?
A. To prove AI reads better than humans.
B. To explain how people read in the past.
C. To contrast past and present approaches to reading.
D. To argue reading was better in the past than it is today.
13. What feature of AI is mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. It can create new works based on old books.
B. It improves readers’ ability of deep reading.
C. It makes understanding writers’ thoughts easier.
D. It stops people from forgetting important knowledge.
14. What is Professor Baron’s concern according to the text?
A. AI can reconstruct a writer’s thinking.
B. AI cannot summarize books efficiently.
C. Readers will lose the joy of deep reading.
D. Cognitive offloading helps develop reasoning skills.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To highlight the efficiency of AI as a reading tool.
B. To challenge the value of traditional deep reading.
C. To show both the benefits and risks of AI reading.
D. To warn against relying too much on AI for reading.
C 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据第一段中的“A few decades ago, these weren’t urgent questions. Reading was an ordinary human activity — moving your eyes across a page at your own pace.(几十年前,这两个问题根本算不上要紧事。阅读只是一项普通的人类活动——按照自己的节奏逐行浏览书页。)”以及第二段中的“Today, AI is changing how we engage with books and how much we value reading as a human activity.(如今,人工智能正在改变人们的读书方式以及人们对阅读这项人类活动的重视程度。)”
根据第三段中的“Different from human readers, AI can reconstruct a writer’s thinking, translating it into more accessible language. This allows future readers to engage with a writer’s thoughts easily, without having to read big, old, forgotten books or hunt down other books for extensive summaries. (和人类读者不同,人工智能能够还原作者的思路,并将其转化为更通俗易懂的文字。这能让后续读者轻松领会作者的想法,不必去翻阅厚重、老旧、被人遗忘的书籍,也不用四处查找其他书籍来获取详尽总结。)”可知,人工智能能够简化文本内容,帮助读者更轻松地理解作者的想法。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“We also miss out on so much of what makes reading enjoyable — encountering a moving piece of dialogue, relishing a turn of phrase, connecting with a character.(我们也会错失阅读中绝大部分的乐趣——邂逅一段动人的对白,品味精妙的措辞,与书中人物产生共鸣。)”
通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“At a time when people are already spending less time with books, AI’s efficiency may seem attractive, but it can also weaken both the pleasure and the value of deep reading.(在如今人们本就花更少时间读书的时代,人工智能高效便捷的特点看似很有吸引力,但它同时也会削弱深度阅读带来的乐趣与价值。)”
Many people believe that success begins with a perfect plan. They wait until every detail is in place, every risk is considered, and every tool is ready. ____16____
On Progress Over Perfection Most people don’t fail because they’re not good enough. They fail because they wait too long to start. They polish plans, overthink details, and chase the perfect moment — until the moment passes. A rough start beats a perfect plan every time. The world rewards action, not perfection. Even the mistakes of a beginning put you ahead of those still waiting. It gives you progress, feedback, and room to adjust. ____17____ You just need to begin.
On Building Consistency Consistency isn’t about being perfect every day. It’s about showing up even when you don’t feel like it, even when your work isn’t great. Small, messy actions add up to immense bursts of brilliance. If you wait for motivation, you’ll never get started. Instead, commit to the tiniest version of your goal: write one sentence, practice for five minutes.____18____
On Overcoming the Fear of Failure The fear of failing often keeps us from even trying. We imagine all the ways it could go wrong. But failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s part of it.____19____ That’s not a sign you’re bad at it, but a sign you’re learning. You don’t have to get it right on the first try, or even the tenth. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
On Finding Your Rhythm ____20____ Messy first attempts will turn into skills. Slow, steady steps will make progress. You won’t even notice when you go from “just starting” to “actually good.” It happens quietly while you keep showing up. A rough start isn’t the end of the road. It’s the beginning of something that will only get better.
A. Every rough start comes with mistakes.
B. You don’t need to have it all figured out.
C. Over time, the rough edges will smooth out.
D. Learn from every mistake before you take action.
E. But the truth is, a rough start is often a good start.
F. The perfect moment will arrive if you wait patiently.
G. The magic happens in quiet, repeated efforts, not big leaps.
E 17. B 18. G 19. A 20. C
根据上文“Many people believe that success begins with a perfect plan. They wait until every detail is in place, every risk is considered, and every tool is ready.(很多人认为成功始于完美的计划。他们一直等待,直到所有细节安排妥当、所有风险考虑周全、所有工具准备就绪)”介绍大众普遍观点:坐等万事俱备再行动,后文全文倡导不必追求完美开局。E选项“But the truth is, a rough start is often a good start.(但事实是,粗糙的开端往往就是良好的开端)”利用But与上文大众想法构成转折,引出文章核心论点,起到总领全文的作用,上下文逻辑连贯。
根据上文“They polish plans, overthink details, and chase the perfect moment — until the moment passes. A rough start beats a perfect plan every time. Even the mistakes of a beginning put you ahead of those still waiting. It gives you progress, feedback, and room to adjust.(他们完善计划,过度考虑细节,追求完美的时刻——直到那一刻过去。仓促不完美的开局总是胜过一个完美的计划。即便起步阶段犯错,也会让你领先于还在等待的人。起步能带来进展、反馈和调整的空间)”,指出不需要等待一切计划完美再开始,强调行动起来的重要性。根据下文“You just need to begin.(你只需要动身开始)”。B选项“You don’t need to have it all figured out.(你不需要把一切都弄明白)”承接上文,说明启动前不必万事通晓,和下文“只需要开始”呼应,上下文构成解释说明关系。
根据上文“If you wait for motivation, you’ll never get started. Instead, commit to the tiniest version of your goal: write one sentence, practice for five minutes.(如果你坐等动力降临,永远无法启程。相反,着手完成目标最小单元:写一句话、练习五分钟)”阐述依靠持续微小行动推进目标。G选项“The magic happens in quiet, repeated efforts, not big leaps.(奇迹诞生于默默不断的坚持,而非一蹴而就的巨大跨越)”总结本段核心,点明持续微小行动的价值,上下文构成总结概括关系。
【19题详解】
上文“But failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s part of it.(失败并非成功的对立面,而是成功的一部分)”说明失败是成功的一部分;下文“That’s not a sign you’re bad at it, but a sign you’re learning. That’s not a sign you’re bad at it, but a sign you’re learning. You don’t have to get it right on the first try, or even the tenth. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.(这并不代表你不擅长这件事,而是代表你正在学习。这并不表明你不擅长,而是表明你正在学习。你不需要第一次就做对,甚至第十次也不需要。我们的目标是进步,而不是完美。)”用“That”指代某种情况并解释其含义,目标是有进步,不需要开始就成功。A选项“Every rough start comes with mistakes.(每一个粗糙的开端都会伴随着错误)”衔接上文,说明起步伴随失误,下文针对这些失误进行解读,上下文语意连贯。
【20题详解】
根据下文“Messy first attempts will turn into skills. Slow, steady steps will make progress.(不成熟的初次尝试终将转化为能力,缓慢稳定的步伐会带来进步)”说明持续坚持行动之后状态会慢慢变好;后文“Messy first attempts will turn into skills. Slow, steady steps will make progress. You won’t even notice when you go from “just starting” to “actually good.”(凌乱的第一次尝试会变成技能。

Leo, a seventeen-year-old boy, always wore a bright smile. This may not seem that unusual. But Leo suffered from cerebral palsy (脑瘫), a condition that left his muscles stiff and, for the most part, unmanageable. Because he had trouble speaking, it was this bright smile that reflected his true personality: a great kid.
He used a walker most of the time to move through the crowded school hallways. A lot of times people didn’t speak to him. Why? Who knows? Maybe it was because he looked different and the rest of the students didn’t know how to approach him. Leo usually broke the ice with people he met in the halls with a big “Hi”.
Once, I assigned homework: to memorize three stanzas (诗节) of the poem Don’t Quit. I only made the assignment worth ten points because I figured most of my students wouldn’t do it anyway. When I was in school and a teacher assigned ten-point homework, I would probably have blown it off. So I wasn’t expecting much from today’s teenagers either. Leo was in the class, and I noticed a look on his face that was different from the normal bright smile. The look was one of worry. “Don’t worry, Leo,” I thought to myself. “It’s only ten points.”
The day the assignment came due, I went through the student list, and nothing surprised me. One by one, each student failed to recite the poem. “Sorry, Mr. Krause,” they said, “it’s only worth ten points anyway... right?” In disappointment and half kidding, I declared that the next person who didn’t recite the poem perfectly had to drop to the floor and do ten push-ups (俯卧撑). To my surprise, Leo was next.
注意:
(1)写作词数应为150个左右;

Watching this, the whole class, including me, were in silence.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Using his walker, Leo slowly made his way to the front of the class. He adjusted his posture with great effort and took a deep breath. Soon he began reciting Don’t Quit. Affected by cerebral palsy, his speech was slow and indistinct, but he kept going steadily. Amazingly, he recited all three stanzas accurately without any pause or mistake. I stood rooted to the spot, overwhelmed with shock. None of the other students had succeeded, yet Leo fulfilled the task perfectly.
Watching this, the whole class, including me, were in silence. Shortly afterwards, loud applause erupted throughout the classroom. Curious, I asked Leo why he spared no effort for merely ten points. Wearing his familiar bright smile, he explained that the poem inspired him to never give up struggling against his illness. His perseverance touched every heart. From that day on, classmates took the initiative to communicate with Leo. We all learned that real courage lies in sticking to things, no matter how tough life is.

Students’ Union
