On top of/In addition to/Apart from spoken language, we can take advantage of body language, which can send stronger signals than words or written texts. Consequently how do we put body language to good use? I'll show you the following tips: first and foremost, when communicating with others, you need to smile and maintain eye contact. This will show others that you are a good listener and in turn they will listen to you. What’s more, while listening to others, you need to nod your head from time to time to show that you’re paying attention. Last but not least, you're encouraged to use gestures to express your thoughts. Hopefully, the above-mentioned tips will go a long way towards your interaction with others. 1 / 13 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $Unit 4 Body language 外刊拓展提升(多题型专练) 识·单元要点概览 读·外刊拓展阅读 (来源:https://www.choosingtherapy.com/body-language/) Learning to Read Body Language If you want to learn more about how to interpret and read body language better, some things that you should be on the lookout for are body positioning, messages from their eyes, and being aware of their posture. However, be sure to take the entire situation into consideration, as body language experts agree that not all messages automatically mean the same thing when taken out of context of one’s culture and background. Six tips for reading body language are: 1. Watch for Microexpressions A microexpression is an element of body language, such as a facial expression, that only lasts for a quick second. An example of this can be an eyeroll, a sideways glance, or a raised eyebrow. Looking for these microexpressions can give you a clue as to how the person feels. 2. Study the Eyes Our eyes are often used to enhance spoken or unspoken messages.4 Look to the eyes to show evidence of frustration, sincerity, discomfort, among other things. 3. Be Understanding Assuming something about a person without understanding the entire situation is unfair. Therefore, try not to assume something negative just from seeing one element of their communication. For example, crossed arms do not always mean that they are being aggressive. Sometimes people cross their arms because it is a comfortable way to sit in an armless chair, for example. 4. Consider Environmental Clues It is important to consider the environment for clues as to what is going on with the person. For example, someone who is standing too close to another person might be seen as aggressive or inappropriate in a large room with a lot of space, yet this same distance would be considered appropriate in a crowded hallway or elevator. 5.Stay Present You have to be fully present to understand what someone is trying to communicate. Rather than trying to assume something based on a quick glance or interaction, being present will give you a better idea of the whole situation. 6. Look at the Whole Person Assuming someone is being negative because of one aspect of their body language is illogical because it only gives one element of their communication. They might be showing one aspect of negative communication, such as fidgeting or clenching their fists, but this could be because they are uncomfortable- and not because they are trying to be rude. 1.If you want to learn more about how to interpret and read body language better, some things that you should be on the lookout for are body positioning, messages from their eyes, and being aware of their posture. If you want to learn more about how to interpret and read body language better 是条件状语从句,从句内 how to interpret and read body language better 作介词 about 的宾语;主句主语为 some things, that you should be on the lookout for 是定语从句,修饰先行词 some things;are 为系动词,三个并列名词 / 动名词短语 body positioning, messages from their eyes, being aware of their posture 共同作表语。 2.However, be sure to take the entire situation into consideration, as body language experts agree that not all messages automatically mean the same thing when taken out of context of one’s culture and background. 分析:本句主句为祈使句 be sure to take the entire situation into consideration;as 引导原因状语从句,解释主句建议的依据;状语从句中 body language experts 是主语,agree 是谓语,that 引导宾语从句作 agree 的宾语;宾语从句内 when taken out of context of one’s culture and background 是省略主语与 be 动词的时间状语从句,完整形式为 when all messages are taken out of context of one’s culture and background。 练·能力培优拔高 培优提升篇 Passage 1(2026四川绵阳高二期中) People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack,University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do,Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.“We demonstrate that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said.“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.” According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery reveals that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously assumed. As a consequence, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories:happy, sorrowful, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry,or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did.“The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said.“Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion,Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.” In short, the data indicate that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on,examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion.Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures,Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation. 1.According to the passage, how do Easterners usually look at faces to read expressions? A.They look at the whole face evenly. B.They pay most attention to the eyes. C.They focus equally on the eyes and the mouth. D.They move their attention between different features quickly. 2.What were the subjects asked to do in the study? A.To make their faces impressive. B.To observe the researchers’ faces. C.To classify certain facial images. D.To make their eyes move in a specific pattern. 3.What are Easterners likely to do when compared with Westerners? A.Examine the eyes more attentively. B.Perform translation more skilfully. C.Focus more on the mouth frequently. D.Read facial expressions more accurately. 4.What is the best title for the passage? A.The Eye Serving as a Window into the Soul B.Cultural Distinctions in Interpreting Emotions C.How to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding D.Effective Approaches to Developing Social Skills Passage 2(2024·北京大兴·三模) We now live in an age of instant images and emoji, when 10,000 copies of a picture can be spread around the world in seconds by sliding a finger half an inch across a phone screen. This would have been unbelievable and unimaginable 20 years ago. But it is in the world of hand-copied manuscripts (手稿) 1,000 years old or more that the digital revolution has had some of its most profound and obvious beneficial effects. What may have taken three years to write out can today be printed out in three seconds. There are now tens of thousands of once unique documents which have been digitized and placed online for anyone to access all around the world, and this is a vast, democratizing wonder. Take the Parker Library in Cambridge, which contains the scholarly works during the Reformation (宗教改革时期) and collected by Matthew Parker. It has been digitized in a project with Stanford University, and in 2018 the site was opened to all comers to browse after 10 years behind scholarly paywalls. What is astonishing is not just the texts themselves, but the pictures: the illuminations (插图) on some of the manuscripts show off the fertility and vividness of the medieval imagination. Digitized collections of these sorts cannot entirely substitute for real libraries. To touch with your own hand a parchment (羊皮纸) from a medieval monk is an experience no screen can offer, but it is one which must always be restricted to a lucky few. There are some things so old and fragile that even being looked at may damage them. The caves at Lascaux had to be closed to protect the paintings from the breath of tourists and replaced by a virtual display. Yet in some ways these copies are better than the originals. Reproductions of a high enough quality make obvious de tail that’s invisible to the native eye. What’s more, digital collections can be gathered on one screen from across the globe. The International Dunhuang Project reunites on screen tens of thousands of Buddhist scrolls and artifacts in western China. What is possible with this one collection should fairly soon be possible with all the scholarly digitized manuscripts of the world. The hope is to bring them under one system of classification so that they can quickly be searched and sorted no matter where they came from and where they now are stored. The world may always prefer cat gifs to ancient manuscripts, but the translation from parchment to pixels (像素) reminds us of the humanistic optimism with which the web came into the world, and shows that much of it was not misplaced at all. 1.By mentioning the Parker Library, the author intends to _______. A.condemn the behavior of Matthew Parker as immoral B.demonstrate the worth and value of its distinctive documents C.describe the measures and effects of digitizing the manuscripts D.display the fertility and vividness of the medieval imagination 2.According to Paragraph 3, the purpose of closing the caves at Lascaux is to _______. A.prevent the paintings from being damaged B.carry on the restoration of the paintings C.show the wonder effect of virtual display D.reduce the number of tourists 3.Classifying the digitized manuscripts in one system is beneficial to _______. A.collecting much more valuable materials B.quickly finding and sorting documents C.consulting materials from all over the world D.saving time and energy of searching documents 4.Which would be the best title of the passage? A.The Impact of Digital Revolution Era B.The New Era of Traditional Manuscripts C.Accessibility of Old Manuscripts All Around the World D.Digital Revolution Brings Manuscripts To life Passage 3 Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate.Since they can’t hear, talking to people can be tough.Fortunately, sign language interpreters step in to bridge this gap. Hao Shuxin,24,sees sign language as her first language,as her parents are deaf.“I picked up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. From a young age,Hao has been helping her parents and other deaf individuals communicate. In 2018,she became a sign language interpreter at a law company in Chongqing, assisting deaf clients in legal matters. Since sign language has a smaller vocabulary,Hao often encounters complex legal terms that have no direct match. In such cases, she patiently breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language.“For example, the phrase ‘put out a fire’ is signed as ‘a fire put out’ in sign language,as deaf people describe what they see first,” Hao explained. Besides hand gestures, facial expressions and mouth movements are essential components of sign language. They work together to accurately communicate messages and prevent misunderstandings. To ensure clarity in legal interpretations,Hao sometimes repeats a sentence two or three times for deaf individuals.“I feel stressed at work because I worry about being misunderstood,” she admitted. Part of Hao’s anxiety comes from the fact that sign language has regional “dialects”.The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from.“For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word ‘true’,” Hao explained. She believes that patience and compassion(同情) are essential to her work.“My parents are deaf,so I understand the challenges faced by the deaf community.I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said. 1.What can be learned about Hao Shuxin? A.She wants to learn more sign language dialects. B.She hopes to be a successful lawyer in Chongqing. C.She learned sign language when she was very small. D.She communicates with others mainly by sign language. 2.What can we infer from the third paragraph? A.The vocabulary of sign language is very large. B.Sign language and Chinese have many similarities. C.It is not easy to express legal terms in sign language. D.It is hard for deaf people to understand sign language. 3.What does the underlined word “clarity” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Clearness. B.Awareness. C.Kindness. D.Gentleness. 4.What does the text mainly talk about? A.Sign language is the first language of the deaf. B.A sign language interpreter guards the silent world. C.Sign language plays an important role in the legal field. D.A sign language interpreter significantly changes other people’s life. Passage 4(2026浙江温州高二期末) Body Language in the Virtual World As social beings,we naturally interpret body language as an expression of mood or intention in real life. 1 Here are four body language considerations that will result in your bigger digital impact in video calls.  Make a positive and lasting impression. The way you hold yourself affects how others perceive you. 2 Similarly, slumping on the sofa conveys unwillingness to take the task seriously.Maintaining a proper posture by sitting up straight is the key to making a positive impression from the beginning.   3 In video calls, you need to be aware that less is more.Too many hand movements can be distracting in a small screen—people need time to take in what they are hearing. And when you are listening to others, glancing at your palms and drumming your fingers could also indicate to others that you are either bored or frustrated.  Guard against “resting bored face” syndrome(综合征).Our facial expressions are visible on screen,so demonstrating an objective response to whatever you see and hear is a must-have.But communicating that you are mindful at all times is challenging during a video meeting when “resting bored face” syndrome can set in—a facial expression that others register as boredom. 4   Be present and active—don’t multitask.Don’t check your email or tackle other work tasks when you join a video call. 5 While you may be confident that you can successfully do two or more things at once, and not lose track of what’s being discussed, the non-verbal clues you are sending other participants will say otherwise.  A.Master the art of employing gestures. B.Use fewer hand movements to avoid conflicts. C.Even if you are silent, others can see what you are up to. D.For instance, crossed arms can imply defensiveness or annoyance. E.This also applies to our virtual workplace with common video calls. F.To avoid this, remember to nod, smile and lean forward occasionally. G.Therefore,it’s effective to straighten up to leave a positive impression. Passage 5(2026浙江绍兴高二月考) While high school does not generally encourage students to explore new aspects of life, college sets the stage for that exploration.I myself went through this 1 process and found something that has changed my 2 at college for the better:I discovered ASL—American Sign Language.  I never felt an urge to learn any sign language before. My entire family is hearing, and so are all my friends. The 3 languages were enough in all my interactions.Little did I know that I would discover my 4 for ASL.  The 5 began during my first week at college.I watched as the ASL Club 6 their translation of a song. Both the hand movements and the very idea of communicating without speaking 7 me.What I saw was completely unlike anything I had experienced in the past. This newness just left me 8 more.  After that, feeling the need to explore further,I decided to drop in on one of ASL club’s meetings.I only learned how to 9 the alphabet(字母) that day.Yet instead of being 10 by my slow progress,I was excited.I then made it a point to 11 those meetings and learn all I could.  The following term,I 12 an ASL class. The professor was deaf and any talking was 13 .I soon realized that the silence was not unpleasant. 14 ,if there had been any talking,it would have caused us to learn less. Now,I appreciate the silence and the 15 way of communication it opens.  1.A.searching B.planning C.evaluating D.founding 2.A.progress B.experience C.major D.route 3.A.official B.foreign C.body D.spoken 4.A.passion B.concern C.objective D.request 5.A.meeting B.trip C.story D.task 6.A.recorded B.performed C.adopted D.discussed 7.A.bothered B.supported C.embarrassed D.attracted 8.A.displaying B.acting C.saying D.wanting 9.A.print B.write C.sign D.count 10.A.inspired B.discouraged C.acknowledged D.distracted 11.A.chair B.schedule C.attend D.organize 12.A.called off B.took over C.gave up D.registered for 13.A.prohibited B.advocated C.ignored D.repeated 14.A.Lastly B.Consequently C.Instead D.Nevertheless 15.A.easy B.potential C.quick D.new Passage They might be showing one aspect of negative communication, such as fidgeting or clenching their fists, but this could be because they are uncomfortable- and not because they are trying to be rude. A.The Eye Serving as a Window into the Soul B.Cultural Distinctions in Interpreting Emotions C.How to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding D.Effective Approaches to Developing Social Skills 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.” 根据第四段中的“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions ... happy, sorrowful, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry,or neutral.” 根据倒数第二段中的“It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did.” 故选A项。 Passage 2(2024·北京大兴·三模) We now live in an age of instant images and emoji, when 10,000 copies of a picture can be spread around the world in seconds by sliding a finger half an inch across a phone screen. A.The Impact of Digital Revolution Era B.The New Era of Traditional Manuscripts C.Accessibility of Old Manuscripts All Around the World D.Digital Revolution Brings Manuscripts To life 【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据文章第二段“Take the Parker Library in Cambridge, which contains the scholarly works during the Reformation (宗教改革时期) and collected by Matthew Parker. 【答案】1.C 2.C 3.A 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述郝书欣的手语翻译经历,她从小掌握手语,现帮助聋哑人沟通并解决法律问题,展现了手语翻译的意义和挑战。 1.细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“Hao Shuxin,24,sees sign language as her first language,as her parents are deaf.‘I picked up sign language before I could even talk,’ she recalled.”可知,郝书欣她在很小的时候就学会了手语。故选C项。 2.推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“Since sign language has a smaller vocabulary,Hao often encounters complex legal terms that have no direct match.”可知,用手语表达法律术语并不容易。故选C项。 3.词义猜测题。根据第四段中的“Hao sometimes repeats a sentence two or three times for deaf individuals.”以及“‘I feel stressed at work because I worry about being misunderstood,’ she admitted.”可知,郝书欣有时会为聋人重复一句话两到三次,担心被误解,目的是想确保法律被解释的清晰性。由此可知,clarity意为“清晰性”。故选A项。 4.主旨大意题。通读文章可知,文章从郝书欣的视角,描述了手语翻译的工作内容、挑战和意义,突出了她帮助聋哑人融入社会的努力,展现了她对无声世界的守护。B项符合文意,具有高度概括性,符合作为标题的特征。故选B项。 Passage 4(2026浙江温州高二期末) Body Language in the Virtual World As social beings,we naturally interpret body language as an expression of mood or intention in real life.
