These stories vividly show how lively and colorful adolescence can be. As an Irvington high school student, my daily life was fully occupied with regular classes, math competitions and STEM club activities. I was constantly buried in coursework, weighed down by the pressure of academic grades and future college admissions. Now that I am a senior, I have come to realize that there was something essential missing from my high school journey. It was not until I attended my first and last Homecoming Dance that I finally figured out what this missing element was. When I stepped into the open courtyard, I was filled with great unease. Mixed peer pressure, fear of lifelong regret and natural curiosity drove me to turn up. Although my friends stayed close by,I still felt awkward facing crowds of unfamiliar faces. Everyone was formally dressed. Loud music blared from the loudspeakers, and colourful lights kept flashing nonstop. I had no idea how I would get through the next three hours. I wandered around and waved awkwardly to people I barely knew. Soon my friends invited me forward to form a big circle in front of the stage. My first instinct was to hold back, but my friend Ryan kept encouraging me to move closer. Watching my quiet friends jump excitedly to the rhythm of the songs, I chose to accept my discomfort and fully enjoy the moment. Singing and dancing along with the music, I temporarily forgot homework and college applications. I set aside all my burdens and simply enjoyed being an ordinary teenager, flooded with energy. That is exactly the “it” I had been searching for — an ineffable experience of human connection, group identity and a strong sense of belonging. I do not mean that you have to become extremely outgoing to live a fulfilling high school life.Honestly, I felt exhausted after the party and my social energy was totally used up. Even so, I strongly recommend all of you to step out of your comfort zone again and again. Seek out activities that lift your spirits and help you build genuine bonds with others. 4. What occupied most of the author’s high school life before the dance? A. Organizing various community club activities. B. Making friends with large groups of strangers. C. Watching popular teenage movies and TV shows. D. Academic study and competition-related pressure. 5. What can we infer from Paragraph 5? A. The author hated the noisy atmosphere near the stage. B. The author overcame his hesitation and joined in the fun. C. The author refused Ryan’s invitation out of inner shyness. D. The author was well acquainted with everyone in the circle. 6. What change did the author have after the Homecoming Dance? A. He gained a sense of belonging that he long lacked. B. He decided to take part in more STEM club activities. C. He realized the importance of winning math competitions. D. He became tired of endless school burdens all of a sudden. 7. What is the core theme of the text? A. Staying alone can bring inner peace to teenagers. B. TV shows can inspire teenagers to live a more colorful life. C. Students should take more part in all kinds of competitions. D. Teenagers should bravely break away from their comfort zone. 4. D 5. B 6. A 7. I was constantly buried in coursework, weighed down by the pressure of academic grades and future college admissions.(作为欧文顿高中的一名学生,我的日常生活被常规课程、数学竞赛和科学、技术、工程与数学社团活动完全占据。 根据第五段“My first instinct was to hold back, but my friend Ryan kept encouraging me to move closer. Watching my quiet friends jump excitedly to the rhythm of the songs, I chose to accept my discomfort and fully enjoy the moment.(我的第一反应是退缩,但我的朋友瑞安一直鼓励我靠近一些。 根据第六段“That is exactly the “it” I had been searching for — an ineffable experience of human connection, group identity and a strong sense of belonging.(这恰恰是我一直以来在找寻的东西——一种难以言喻的人际联结、群体认同和强烈的归属感体验)”以及前文提到的高中生活缺失关键内容可知,参加返校舞会后,作者收获了长久以来缺失的归属感。 通读全文,作者叙述自身参加返校舞会、走出自我固有状态的经历,文末“I strongly recommend all of you to step out of your comfort zone again and again.(我强烈建议所有人一次次走出自己的舒适区)”点明主旨,告知青少年应勇敢突破舒适区、丰富青春体验。 C Who should you marry? Where should you live? How should you spend your time? For centuries, people have relied on their instinct to answer these life-changing questions. But now, there is a better way. We are living in a time of data explosion, with vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior becoming more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course or action. There has long been-overwhelming and often surprsing evidence that algorithms (算法)can outperform-people in making difficult decisions. For example, researchers have found that a simple data-driven algorithm would have made better decisions than school principals, when deciding which teachers should be promoted, The power of data analysis has also been proven in the worlds of sports and business. As highlighted in the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts (星探)at picking players and more effective than managers at developing strateges. However, statistics have had surprisingly little impact on our personal lives. One major reason is that good data about life’s biggest personal questions has been difficult to come by. What makes people happy? In the 20th century, there was no systematic data available to answer this question. While records from every game provided the raw material for data scientists working in sports, there was no equivalent record of events in people’s lives or the mood changes caused-by those events. Happiness, unlike baseball, could simply not be measured wwith numbers. That hnas changed, however. Experience sampling projects now “ping” people on their devices to ask various questions: What are you doing? Who are you with? How happy are you? The largest of these projects, Mappiness has collected more than three million data points. Research done by its co-founders, economists Susana Mourato and George MacKerron, has revealed the activities that provide far more enjoyment than most of uswould have guessed, such as gardening, and those that bring us less pleasure than expected, like browsing the internet. Another data-driven strategy for increasing happiness is moving house. Of course, data based on large samples of people isn’t all you should consider when moving. However, data is giving us insights into other factors that might come into play. For example, a study of tens of millions of children identified the places that are most likely to increase their future earnings. Another large-scale study found that certain cities can improve one’s life expectancy. We are in the early days of the data revolution in personal decision-making. I’m not claiming that we can completely let algorithms make all our life decisions, though we might reach that point in the future. What I’m saying instead is that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence gathered from thousands or millions of people who have faced similar dilemmas. And we can do that now. 8. What can we learn about the use of algorithms in making decisions? A. Algorithms aren’t as good as humans at making difficult decisions. B. People were afraid of losing privacy by giving their data to algorithms. C. It’s surprising that algorithms are useful in making personal decisions. D. Algorithms have been proven effective in the worlds of sports and business. 9. What can be inferred about the Mappiness project? A. It aims to change people’s living habits completely. B. It has solved most personal puzzles with limited data. C. Its findings go against people’s common expectations. D. It mainly focuses on the influence of housing on happiness. 10. What does the underlined phrase “come into play” probably means in Paragraph 7? A. Begin to function. B. Deserve public attention. C. Wait for further proof. D. Get rid of limitations. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards data in personal decisions? A. Approving. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. D 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第三段“The power of data analysis has also been proven in the worlds of sports and business. As highlighted in the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts (星探) at picking players and more effective than managers at developing strateges.(数据分析的力量也已经在体育和商业领域得到证实。 根据第六段“Research done by its co-founders, economists Susana Mourato and George MacKerron, has revealed the activities that provide far more enjoyment than most of us would have guessed, such as gardening, and those that bring us less pleasure than expected, like browsing the internet.(其联合创始人、经济学家苏珊娜・穆拉托和乔治・麦克伦开展的研究发现,有些活动带来的愉悦感远超我们大多数人的猜测,比如园艺,而有些活动带来的愉悦感低于预期,比如浏览互联网)”可知,该项目的研究结果与人们的普遍认知相悖。 根据第七段“Of course, data based on large samples of people isn’t all you should consider when moving. However, data is giving us insights into other factors that might come into play. For example, a study of tens of millions of children identified the places that are most likely to increase their future earnings.(当然,在搬家的时候,基于大量人群样本的数据并不是你需要考虑的全部内容。 根据最后一段“What I’m saying instead is that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence gathered from thousands or millions of people who have faced similar dilemmas. And we can do that now.(相反,我想说的是,我们都可以通过参考成千上万、数百万面临过相似困境的人收集到的数据证据,大幅提升我们的决策能力,而且我们现在就可以做到)”可知,作者认可数据在个人决策中的作用,持支持态度。 D Hungry gulls do not only steal our chips and sandwiches. They learn our habits. They look for pliable sources of food. That includes waste treatment centres, landfills or anywhere food waste is concentrated. Many gull populations have moved inland from the coast to exploit these sources of food. Wherever our waste is processed, birds can forage (觅食). At landfills, gulls feed on waste before it is covered up. If there are small plastic or glass pieces covered in food, they will swallow them whole. Only the food itself gets digested. When the bird flies back to its roost site, the waste gets regurgitated (反刍). This pollutes that site. This movement of pollutants is known as “biovectoring”. Many lesser black-backed gulls breed in the UK and other parts of northern Europe. They migrate to Andalusia in southern Spain. They form a wintering population of over 100,000 there. They feed mainly in rice fields and landfills. Fortunately, many of these birds are fitted with GPS tags while breeding. This enables detailed tracking of their movements. Fuente de Piedra lake is in Málaga. It is a hotspot for migrating lesser black-backed gulls. This wetland has special natural significance. It’s designated as an internationally important site under a global convention (公约) known as Ramsar. It has the largest breeding colony of flamingos in Spain. Gulls fly up to 50 miles to landfills to feed. They then fly back to roost. Scientists have estimated that an average of 400kg of plastics are dropped into the lake each year by gulls. This is alongside more than two tonnes of other debris such as glass, textiles or ceramics. This waste consumption has strong effects on the birds themselves. It can cause direct death from diseases, choking or becoming entangled with plastics. The additives within them also have toxic effects. Then after regurgitation in pellets (小球), those plastics are a threat to all the animals living in the area. They may enter our food supply through fish farming and table salt production. These studies in Spain address a problem that is ongoing all over Europe. There are no comparable quantitative studies yet in the UK. However, similar problems occur wherever gulls concentrate to feed on our waste. The closure of many landfills may have contributed to recent declines in many gull populations. But these problems of plastic leakage will continue so long as our consumer society generates so much waste. Reducing waste, and reusing things is better than recycling. That is partly because food containers may get eaten by birds before they can be recycled. Cleaning our food containers before we bin them can help to reduce this phenomenon. Recycling our own food waste can also help. 12. Why do many gulls move from coastal areas to inland places? A. To build safer breeding habitats. B. To follow migrating sea creatures. C. To seek accessible human food waste. D. To escape extreme weather at the coast. 13. What can we know about Fuente de Piedra lake? A. It owns the world’s largest flamingo breeding base. B. It is officially regarded as a globally important wetland. C. It remains free from plastic and other rubbish pollution. D. It attracts almost no migrating lesser black-backed gulls. 14. What can we infer from the whole passage? A. Recycling is far from enough to solve plastic leakage issues. B. Cleaning food containers barely helps reduce bird pollution. C. Sealing landfills has completely stopped the decline of gulls. D. The UK has finished adequate studies on gull-related pollution. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. To introduce the living habits and migration paths of gulls. B. To explain why inland landfills attract large groups of seabirds. C. To show how gulls spread waste plastics and cause ecological risks. D. To present practical methods to cut down European plastic pollution. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第一段中的“They look for pliable sources of food. That includes waste treatment centres, landfills or anywhere food waste is concentrated. Many gull populations have moved inland from the coast to exploit these sources of food.(它们寻找易获取的食物来源,包括垃圾处理中心、垃圾填埋场或是任何食物垃圾集中的地方。 根据第四段中的“Fuente de Piedra lake is in Málaga. It is a hotspot for migrating lesser black-backed gulls. This wetland has special natural significance. It’s designated as an internationally important site under a global convention (公约) known as Ramsar.(丰特德彼德拉湖位于马拉加,是小黑背鸥迁徙的聚集地。 根据第八段中的“Reducing waste, and reusing things is better than recycling. That is partly because food containers may get eaten by birds before they can be recycled.(减少垃圾产生、物品重复利用优于回收利用,部分原因是食品容器可能在回收前就被鸟类误食。)” 通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“When the bird flies back to its roost site, the waste gets regurgitated (反刍). This pollutes that site. This movement of pollutants is known as “biovectoring”.(当海鸥飞回栖息处,垃圾会被反刍出来,污染栖息地,这种污染物转移现象被称作“生物载体效应”。)” Nowadays, more people are stuck indoors, buried in study, work and digital devices. It felt as ____22____ as we were. One sunny morning, Mom said ____23____, “What if we change this into a garden?” I stared at her, confused. Gardening was the last thing I wanted to do. But her eyes held a tiny spark of hope I hadn’t seen in months. I nodded, ____24____ to give it a try. We started slowly. We pulled weeds, turned the hard soil, and planted simple seeds — tomatoes, sunflowers, and herbs. Working side by side, our hands dirty, we talked less and laughed more. Rarely had I devoted myself to manual labor, regarding physical work as exhausting and meaningless. My life circled around screens, takeout meals and air-conditioned classrooms, with little exposure to the outside world beyond the city limits. Therefore, when our school scheduled a one-day farm internship (实习)on an organic suburban farm, I approached the activity with obvious unwillingness and prejudice. I even complained to my best friend that the day would be nothing but a waste of time better spent on my phone. Upon arrival, the fresh earthy scent swept over me, yet the rough dirt and tangled vines filled me with discomfort. Under the guidance of an experienced gardener named Mr. Hale, we were assigned to harvest ripe strawberries and clear overgrown weeds among the bushes. Initially, I moved clumsily. The thorny branches scratched my wrists, and persistent sweat soaked my collar. My aching muscles constantly reminded me of my weakness. Tired and frustrated, I secretly desired to get away from the tiresome physical labor. The charming digital world in my phone suddenly seemed far more appealing. When Mr. Hale’s back was turned, I even secretly glanced at my screen, scrolling mindlessly while my classmates worked hard around me. The sun climbed higher, and my anger grew with every minute I spent in the dirt, convinced that this was the worst day of my school year. Observing my restlessness and half-hearted efforts, Mr. Hale gently walked over to me. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the end of the afternoon, the baskets were filled with fresh strawberries. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Observing my restlessness and half-hearted efforts, Mr. Hale gently walked over to me. He did not blame me for slacking off. Instead, he picked a bright red strawberry and handed it to me. “Those tasty fruits you order online all come from such hard work,” he said softly. I bit into the strawberry; its natural sweetness burst in my mouth. Watching other students bending down carefully to harvest fruits and pull weeds, I was overcome with shame. I put my phone deep into my pocket, straightened up and focused on my task. I carefully avoided sharp branches, picked ripe berries and cleared weeds patiently. Gradually, tiredness gave way to quiet satisfaction. By the end of the afternoon, the baskets were filled with fresh strawberries. Staring at our fruitful harvest, a warm sense of achievement rose inside me. All my complaints faded away. I finally understood that every grocery we enjoy requires endless manual work. City convenience should never make us ignore the efforts behind food. This farm internship changed my prejudice toward physical labor, leaving a valuable lesson I would keep in mind forever. 词类激活 行为类 ①责备:blame/scold ②消失:fade away/disappear/vanish 情绪类 ①轻柔地:gently/tenderly ②满足:satisfaction/contentment 【点睛】【高分句型1】Watching other students bending down carefully to harvest fruits and pull weeds, I was overcome with shame. B I love watching teenage films and TV series set in high school, such as Mean Girls, Never Have I Ever and Spider-Man: Homecoming. C Who should you marry? C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. D Hungry gulls do not only steal our chips and sandwiches. Nowadays, more people are stuck indoors, buried in study, work and digital devices. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
