B Approaching 96, at an age when most are lonely and in poor health, Olga Murray, full of energy, has been eagerly planning a trip to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, while keeping in contact with hundreds of friends around the world. How can she be in such good shape? Is it due to her good genes? (Her mother lived to 98.) or her daily salads and three-times-a-week workouts? Or might it have something to do with the retired lawyer’s second career as founder of a nonprofit organization? Scientists are increasingly finding that the answer — living with purpose. Finding meaning in life or just engaging with something larger than yourself — can be a particularly healthy pursuit. Living with a sense of purpose can improve the quality of those final years. Murray offers a vivid example of how to create a sense of meaning. Murray’s story began in 1984, after she had worked 37 years as a lawyer and was starting to think about retirement. At 59, while traveling in Nepal, Murray found herself amazed by the children there. “They were poor beyond anything I had ever experienced,” she recalled in a self-published memoir (自传) years later. “Yet they were the most joyful little kids anywhere on earth.” She wanted to put the rest of her life into helping educate Nepalese children. Returning to Nepal the next year, she met Allan Aistrope, then a volunteer English teacher at the country’s only orphanage (孤儿院). The two combined forces, beginning with organizing college scholarships for four of the orphans. After another five years, they had launched the Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF), which by then was supporting several hundred scholarship students and raising 60 homeless children. In 1994, the two hired Som Paneru, a former scholarship student, as executive director. Murray has taken several steps to make sure the NYF will survive after the unavoidable loss of her presence. She handed over the presidency to Paneru in 2012. Now, she is busy as usual, leading lots of fundraising campaigns. 24. When did Murray plan to help Nepalese kids? A. After her Nepal trip. B. In her 37th year of work. C. When she retired in 2012. D. After meeting Allan Aistrope. 25. Who became NYF’s president in 2012? A. Allan Aistrope. B. Som Paneru. C. Olga Murray. D. A Nepalese lawyer. 26. Which words can best describe Murray? A. Devoted and energetic. B. Wealthy and lonely. C. Shy and experienced. D. Strict and impatient. 27. What is the author’s aim in writing the text? A. To introduce Nepal’s poor kids. B. To advertise NYF’s scholarships. C. To explain the value of life purpose. D. To describe Murray’s travel experiences. C Living through extreme heat waves can speed up aging, according to a study published Monday. Scientists analyzed 15 years’ health data from nearly 25,000 adults, finding two years of exposure to heat waves could speed up aging by 8 to 12 extra days. It may not sound like a lot, but this number builds over time, said Cui Guo, an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong. The research comes as human-induced (人为诱发的) climate change is making heat waves more intense and long-lasting. The West Coast of the United States is suffering from burning temperatures, while the impact of extreme heat is becoming increasingly severe, affecting countries such as Iran, Japan, Korea, and France. In 2024, the hottest year on record, climate change was responsible for 41 extra days of extreme heat worldwide, according to an analysis by World Weather Attribution. Particular groups are weaker to faster aging because of heat, the researchers found. If you are an older person who has lived through many heat waves, you may age faster than a younger person who had the same exposure. Other factors, such as living without air-conditioning or working outdoors, can also make your aging rate significantly worse. The study defined heat waves as both a period of at least two continuous days of abnormally high temperatures and any time when officials issued heat warnings. It also took the sum of a person’s heat exposure into account. The researchers quantified the heat’s effects by comparing people’s biological age to their chronological age The study used 12 of these health measurements, known as biomarkers, to work out how heat affected the rate of aging for the study’s participants. The results accounted for individual factors that can affect aging markers, such as exercise, smoking and preexisting disease. Since biological aging is closely linked to death and many diseases, speeding it up can be a sign of serious health problems. To address this, experts suggested taking personal protective measures. 28. How does the author develop the first paragraph? A. By giving a definition. B. By presenting research data. C. By making a comparison. D. By quoting a famous saying. 29. Why does the author mention some countries in paragraph 2? A. To illustrate the serious situation of the research. B. To show the widespread impact of extreme heat. C. To call on global action against climate change. D. To explain the causes of human-induced climate change. 30. Which group is more likely to age faster according to the text? A. Construction workers laboring outdoors. B. Teachers working in a school with central cooling. C. Office clerks working in an air-conditioned building. D. Delivery drivers laboring in air-conditioned vehicles. 31. What might be discussed in the follow-up paragraph? A. Criticism of the study’s methodology and limitations. B. A detailed list of the 12 biomarkers used in the study. C. A comparison of aging rates in different climate zones. D. The specific protective measures recommended by experts. D The world’s landfills are filling up with valuable electronics. According to the UN, about 62 million tons of e-waste are produced yearly. Only 22% is recycled. Most of the rest is buried or burned, in which case recoverable raw materials worth $63 billion go to waste. Getting those materials out is a challenge. Many of these materials become polluted when e-waste is crushed during recycling, limiting the effectiveness of specialist extraction techniques. The process becomes simpler if products are taken apart and their parts sorted by composition before crushing. The trouble is that manual disassembly (拆解) is labour-intensive and costly. Although robots are good at putting together a specific item, they struggle to recognize and take apart the thousands of different devices ending up in landfills. A new generation of robots powered by artificial-intelligence (AI) models, however, seems to be equal to the job. ABB, an electrical-engineering company, is working with Molg, an American engineer, on robotic “mini-factories” to disassemble and recover materials from electronics used in big data centers. Meanwhile, Molg and his team in Germany aim higher. They are creating a robotic system for general recycling centers that must be flexible enough to handle diverse e-waste, ranging from phones to electric-car batteries, LED screens and solar panels. They are starting with an AI-assisted robot that can take apart old desktop computers. The first thing the team’s robot does is to identify any offered product. All gathered information is analyzed and stored in its memory. Once the identification is completed, the AI system then determines which parts are worth removing. Analysis done, the AI generates a disassembly process for operating the robot’s arms, for example, choosing the order to remove screws (螺丝钉). Such multi-purpose robots are likely to gain popularity as companies face growing legal pressure to manage their products’ end-of-life cycle. Therefore, the development of smarter tool-using robots should encourage more firms to ensure their products remain valuable even after being thrown away. 32. The statistics in the first paragraph aim to show that ______. A. e-waste recycling is at a high level B. most electronics are successfully recycled C. the cost caused by e-waste in landfills is huge D. the recycling of e-waste has to be improved urgently 33. What does the underlined word “extraction” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Recovery. B. Control. C. Protection. D. Production. 34. What will the companies probably do according to the last paragraph? A. Reduce the production of electronics to cut e-waste. B. Rely on taking-apart manually to handle their e-waste. C. Make their products easier to recycle. D. Ignore legal requirements on their products’ end-of-life cycle. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. AI Robots: A Helper for E-waste Classification. B. AI Robots: Reducing Losses from E-waste. C. AI Robots: Efficient Disassemblers of E-waste. D. AI Robots: Finding Valuable Materials in E-waste. We all know that protecting our eyes is important. However, many students tend to ignore the warning signs of eye tiredness. ____36____ Nowadays, eye overuse has become a very common phenomenon. ____37____ It usually results from not following the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes), studying in poor lighting conditions, holding books too close to your eyes, or not blinking (眨眼) enough while focusing. What happens when you don’t give your eyes enough rest? In the short term, it can cause eye strain (疲劳) and headaches. The discomfort associated with eye overuse can lead to difficulty concentrating, reduced learning efficiency, and a lack of interest in reading. ____38____ Such discomfort typically includes dry eyes, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light. In the long term, it can potentially worsen nearsightedness. While eye strain can be troubling, the good news is that you can prevent most of these problems. ____39____ Specifically, start practicing the 20-20-20 rule today, which may be simple enough to help your eyes relax and maintain good eyesight. After you’ve formed this good habit, make sure you’re also maintaining proper reading distance and lighting. If you drove a car without ever checking the engine, you’d eventually break down, right? The same goes for your eyes. Just like a car, your eyes need proper care and regular maintenance to keep functioning well — not only when you use them intensively during study sessions but throughout your entire daily life. ____40____ A. Therefore, be cautious during your study time. B. The first thing you can do is develop good habits. C. You may also experience physical eye discomfort. D. Eye overuse means not giving your eyes enough rest. E. In fact, ignoring eye discomfort can lead to serious problems. F. Wearing proper glasses is essential if you have vision problems. G. So, give them proper rest, nutritious support, and professional care when needed. My wife and I had a wonderful day in the countryside, enjoying the fresh air and filling the rack (行李架) on our car with beautiful wildflowers. The quiet boy always sat in the corner, his eyes showing a sadness that didn’t match his age. He loved reading but never participated in activities that required money. “Class, we’ll have a campus writing competition next week,” the literature teacher announced one day. “Winners will enter the city competition and receive writing guides.” Linda felt excited, but noticed David looking down, his fingers moving nervously. After school, Linda found David reading in the library. “Let’s join the competition!” she said warmly. David shook his head. “I can’t.” “Why? You write beautifully!” Linda insisted. David closed his old notebook and answered, “It needs money for books…My parents work hard away from home. “ Their teacher later told Linda more: David’s family struggled financially. He never asked for anything. “He’s too hard on himself,” the teacher said. “He wants to join but fears failing and disappointing his parents.” The next day, Linda brought her books to David. “We can share these. I’ve read about writers who overcame difficulties — their stories inspire me. Once we become famous writers, we can earn a lot of money!” Encouraged by her words, David finally agreed. While preparing, Linda often shared stories of famous writers’ struggles. David showed great writing talent but was too strict with himself. He often asked, “Am I wasting your time?” “Of course not,” Linda reassured him with a smile. “I’m not a talented writer either, and-I joined just for the experience, not expecting to win. So please, don’t overthink it.” 注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 One week before the competition, David wanted to give up again. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At the award ceremony, when the winners were announced, Linda stood up and clapped. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 大通县朔山中学2025~2026学年度第二学期第三次阶段检测 高二英语 考生注意: 1. 6. Indeed, AI is changing the job market. But don’t worry too much. While it may replace some repetitive jobs, it also creates new opportunities. I suggest you focus on developing skills that AI cannot easily replace, such as creativity and emotional intelligence. Consider careers that require human touch, like teaching or healthcare. Most importantly, keep learning new knowledge and skills. Remember, AI is a tool that can help us work better. With proper preparation, you will find your place in the future job market. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (满分25分) 【67题答案】 【答案】One possible version: One week before the competition, David wanted to give up again. “Maybe I should quit,” he whispered. “So many students are better than me.” Linda understood his fear went beyond financial worries. She remembered the writer’s story she had shared before. “Like that writer we discussed,” she said gently, “true success comes from overcoming our self-doubts, not just winning.” David thought about her words, and slowly, the worry in his eyes began to fade. He returned to writing with renewed determination. At the award ceremony, when the winners were announced, Linda stood up and clapped. David’s essay “The Light Within” won first prize! Although Linda’s name wasn’t among the winners, her heart was filled with genuine joy for David’s achievement and pride in their shared effort. On stage, David said gratefully, “Thank you, Linda, for showing me that our circumstances don’t define us it’s our courage to try that matters most.” Seeing David’s bright smile, Linda knew this was more than just winning—it was about a young person finding his voice and believing in himself. 四 标记 选择题(请用2B铅笔填涂) 1[A][B][C] 6[A][B]C0] 11[A][B][c] 16[AJ[B][C] 2[A][B][C] 7[A][B][C] 12[A][B][C] 17LA][B][C] 3[A][B][C 8[A][B][C] 13[A][B][CJ 18[A][B][C 4 [A][B][C] 9 CA][B][C] 14 [A][B][C] 19[A][B][C] 5[AJ[B][C] 10[A][B][C] 15[A][B][C] 20[A[B][C] 21EA][B][c][D] 26[A]LB][C][D] 31CA][B][C][D] 36LA][B][C][D][E]LF][G] 22[A][B][C][D] 27[A][B][C][D] 32[A][B][C][D] 37[A][B][C][D][E][F][G 23[A][B][C][D 28[A][B][c][D 33[A][B][C][D] 38[A][B][C][D][E]LF][G 24[A][B][C][D] 29 [A][B][C][D] 34[A]EB][C][D] 39[A][B][C][D][E][F][G 25[AJ[B][C][D] 30 [A][B][C][D] 35[A][B][C][D] 40 [A][B][C][D][E][F][G] 41[A][B][C][D 46 [A][B][C][D] 51[A][B][C][D 42[A][B][C][D 47[A][B][C][D 52[AJ[B][C][D] 43[A][B] [C][D] 8 [A][B][C][D] 53[A][B][C][D] 44[A][B][C]LD] 49[A][B]LC][D] 54 CA][B][C][D] 45 [A][B][C][D] 50[A][B][C]LD] 55[A]CB][C][D] 非选择题(请使用0.5毫米的黑色字迹签字笔书写) 第二节(15分) 56. 57 58. 59 60. 61 62 63. 64 65 请在各题目的答题区域内作答,超出矩形边框限定区域的答案无效! 高二第三次阶段检测·英语第1页(共2页)26-T-694B 请在各题目的答题区域内作答,超出矩形边框限定区域的答案无效! ▲第一节(15分) Dear Tom, Yours, Li Hua ▲第二节(25分) One week before the competition,David wanted to give up again.
