It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain(劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect(影响) how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t use screens for long hours.
16. The blue light from your screens can cause ________.
A. eyestrain B. headaches C. dry eyes D. all of the above

A. take a break every 15 minutes B. have lower levels of white matter

A. Using smartphones for long hours does harm to your eyes.
B. A lot of screen time affects children’s brain growth.
C. The light from electronics at night may make you excited.
D. People of all ages mustn’t use electronics.
19. You may read the passage in ________.
A. a science magazine B. a travel diary C. a guide book D. a novel
20. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ways to keep healthy. B. The harm of using screens too much.
C. The ways to use screens. D. The advantages of using screens.

Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how scary it can be. High winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less than an hour. A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia’s east coast at the end of March.
The wind was as fast as 236 km/h and destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns. While rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater.
Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms; at least 8 people died, reported Courier Mail. The cyclone lasted for about 3 days. But the flooding was still happening 2 weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes years to rebuild.
A tropical cyclone begins when a group of thunderstorms meets over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water are sucked into clouds from the ocean. Because the earth is rotating, the clouds start to spiral (螺旋式上升). That is why a tropical cyclone has a curved (使成弧形) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator (赤道) because earth’s rotation (自转) is not strong enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone.
So what is the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.
All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Ocean around the US, the term hurricane is used. The same type of storm in the North Pacific Ocean near China is called a typhoon. Cyclones occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.
21. When the wind speed increases to ________, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane.
A. 2km/min B. 3km/min C. 4km/s D. 5km/s
22. The underlined word “recover” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________” in Chinese.
A. 恢复 B. 康复 C. 痊愈 D. 建造
23. Australian cyclones caused ________.
A. many people lost their homes B. trees, cars and boats were destroyed
C. sea levels rose D. A, B and C
24. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. When the wind speed increases to 125 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane.
B. A group of thunderstorms meet over cold, tropical waters.
C. The earth can rotate.
D. tropical cyclones can be seen near Equator.
25. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A terrible cyclone—Debbie. B. The earth’s rotation.
C. The formation of a cyclone. D. A terrible cyclone and how a hurricane forms

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Thanks to better health care, most people are living healthier and longer lives. Someone who is born today can expect to live about thirty-five years longer than someone who was born in the nineteenth century. People think that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthdays. Here are some rules for a healthy life.
Get off the sofa!
Sure, it is comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV. But doctors say you should get off the sofa. To keep fit, you have to walk at least 10, 000 steps every day. In the past, people’s jobs required more physical effort. They often had to walk for miles every day. When farmers were working in the fields, they were keeping fit at the same time. Think about it: Do you get the same amount of exercise today as they did in the past?
Eat healthy food!
It is important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. You should only have it once in a while. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health.
Rest while you can!
When you were babies, you slept for much of the night. Teenagers do not need as much sleep as babies, but it is important for you to get about eight hours’ sleep a night. At weekends, you have got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest too.
Do not worry. Be happy!
Many people believe that happiness is important for their general health. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the difficulties of school, exams or friendships. If you are worried about something, talk to your parents or your teacher.
拒绝吸烟!
Yes, you knew I was going to say this! It is so important. Smoking is not cool. It is dangerous. It harms nearly every part of your body. Think about how your family and friends will feel, and think about what it will do to your health.

Life now and then
There are great changes between life now and then. In the past, people lived in tiny houses. Many children, especially girls, had no chance to go to school. Besides, people had few ways to relax themselves in their free time. Travelling also cost much time because of poor transport.
But now, we live in big and comfortable houses. Every child can get a good education. And we can watch films or listen to music to relax ourselves. Transport and travel are much easier today too. We can take buses, trains, ships even planes everywhere. The only thing is that there is so much traffic.
I think life is much better today. I like the life today.
