Dear Mr. Zhang,
I'm writing to share some suggestions for improving our school cafeteria.
First, I think the cafeteria needs more food choices. Many students get tired of the same dishes every day, so adding more variety would make lunchtime more enjoyable. We hope to see some local snacks and more vegetable options.
Second, I suggest that the cafeteria extend its opening hours, especially during exam period. Many students want to come back for dinner after evening self-study, but the cafeteria now closes too early.
Finally, it would be great to set up a feedback board where students can write down their suggestions each week. This would help the cafeteria improve more quickly.
I hope these suggestions will be helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

Jack Jackson was a normal boy who liked playing baseball with his friends. Not many people knew that his big brother was Ernie Jackson, the famous reporter for the Calgary Times.
One Saturday, Ernie told Jack that he was investigating (调查) a very difficult case and that he was worried he couldn’t solve it. The case was about Modeline Mulrooney, the richest woman in Calgary. Her diamond ring was missing.
“She thinks her swimming coach took it,” Ernie said. “However, he says he hasn’t stolen anything. I’m not sure who to believe.”
“I’ll help you,” said Jack. “Let’s interview Mrs. Mulrooney together.”
The brothers went to Mrs. Mulrooney’s home. Mrs. Mulrooney explained what happened. She said that she always put her ring on the coffee table before she swam in her pool. “The water in the pool isn’t good for my ring, and it also dries my skin,” she said. “I always put on hand cream and wear cotton gloves to bed.”
“Where are the gloves now?” Jack asked.
“I throw them away each morning,” she said, pointing to a rubbish bin.
Jack rushed over to the bin. He searched through it and pulled out many gloves. Carefully, he felt each one, and then he smiled.
“Your ring is right here,” said Jack. “The cream was slippery, so your ring came off with this glove. You only noticed it after swimming.”
“You solved the case?” shouted Ernie.
“You’re my hero!” said Mrs. Mulrooney.
The next day, the headline of the Calgary Times read, “Young Reporter Discovers Missing Diamond!” Jack celebrated by playing baseball with his friends. However, he wondered if there were any more cases to solve.
24.Why did Mrs. Mulrooney take off her ring before swimming?

Do you want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people those who are happy are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses,” said the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” said the study’s leader and researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were happy and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this new study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 people every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day.

① When it comes to teenage mental health, researchers have found that stress is no longer only a problem for adults (成年人). More middle school students are experiencing high levels of pressure in their daily lives, and this situation has drawn wide attention from parents, schools and society.
② One major cause is academic pressure. With more subjects and higher standards in Grade Eight, students often have difficulty balancing homework, revision and after-school classes. Many of them keep studying until late at night, hoping to get ideal grades in exams. However, this not only leads to poor sleep quality but also makes them easily worried and tired during the day.
③ Another important reason is the lack of proper communication. Many teenagers are unwilling to share their feelings with parents or teachers. They believe that adults cannot understand their troubles, so they keep their worries to themselves. Over time, these negative feelings will influence their mood, study, and even physical health. Some students become less confident, while others may feel lonely and helpless.
④ To solve this problem, experts suggest several practical ways. Firstly, students should learn to arrange time wisely and improve learning efficiency (效率) instead of studying for long hours without breaks. Secondly, it’s necessary to express feelings properly. Talking to trusted people can help reduce stress greatly. Thirdly, taking up hobbies and doing outdoor activities can help relax the mind and body.
⑤ Schools and parents also play important roles. Schools should organize more activities to reduce pressure, while parents should care more about their children’s mental health rather than only paying attention to grades.
⑥ In fact, stress is normal in life. The key is to face it positively and use the right ways to deal with it. Only in this way can teenagers keep healthy both in body and mind.
32.Why don’t teenagers share their troubles with adults?
A.They think adults can’t understand them. B.They have no friends to talk to.
C.They are afraid of being laughed at. D.They believe they can solve problems alone.
33.Which of the following is NOT the experts’ advice?
A.Studying as long as possible. B.Arranging time in a wise way.
C.Taking up some hobbies. D.Talking to trusted people.
34.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Ways of improving study efficiency B.Teenagers’ stress and how to deal with it
C.How to make friends with teenagers D.The importance of good sleep

W: Did you know that dragons have been popular legends in both Europe and Asia for over 3000 years? There is a mention of a dragon in the Bible, but it is associated with evil and considered to be the devil. On the other hand, in China, the dragon is still a symbol of intelligence and power. But the image of the dragon in the east and west was influenced by hundreds of years of contact between Asia and Europe, and dragons came to have some similarities. It is believed that dragons were first imagined in the ancient Middle East. In fact, there used to be a time when people even believed that they really existed. People used to think that dinosaur bones were dragon bones. It is not clear when people began to think that dragons could breathe fire. But both European and Asian dragons have been painted as having that capability. The Chinese dragon does not have legs or wings like the European dragons. The Russian dragon is often shown as having three heads. Dragons are still quite popular and can be seen in many movies and television programmes.

A.She was afraid to lose her ring. B.The coach warned her not to wear it.
C.She planned to put it with her gloves. D.The water might do harm to her ring.
25.What does “slippery” mean in this story?
A.Dry and very hard to move. B.Heavy and thick, like the glue.
C.Smooth and easy to fall off. D.Shiny and bright, like a diamond.
26.What’s the CORRECT order of the story?
① The woman went swimming as usual. ② Jack asked the woman about her daily habit.
③ Jack learned about the case from his brother. ④ The woman wore gloves before going to bed.
A.①-④-②-③ B.③-②-①-④ C.①-④-③-② D.③-②-④-①
27.What’s the best title for the story?
A.A Stolen Diamond Ring B.A Careful Clue Finder
C.A Guilty Swimming Coach D.A Boy’s Lucky Discovery
24.第五段Mrs. Mulrooney的原话“The water in the pool isn’t good for my ring”直接说明她取下戒指是因为泳池的水可能对戒指造成损害。
C
After two weeks, doctors let these people come into contact with cold viruses, and they had to stay alone in a room for seven days.
The result showed that everyone in the study was equally(同等地)likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research time, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may make a kind of thing in the body that helps fight illness. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

C.Everyone felt happy during the research. D.Happy people got less sick and got well faster.

A.There is a new study about health. B.A new kind of medicine can treat colds.

35.What’s the structure of the passage?
A.①②/③④/⑤⑥ B.①/②③④/⑤⑥ C.①②③/④/⑤⑥ D.①/②③/④⑤/⑥
【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.D
32.第三段提到“They believe that adults cannot understand their troubles, so they keep their worries to themselves.”,这直接说明了青少年不愿意向成年人倾诉是因为他们认为成年人无法理解他们的烦恼。
33.第四段提到“students should learn to arrange time wisely... instead of studying for long hours without breaks”,这直接说明了专家建议合理安排时间而不是尽可能长时间学习,故选项A不是专家的建议。

Dear Mr. Zhang,
I'm writing to share some suggestions for improving our school cafeteria.
Yours,
Li Hua
