Building with 3D printing technology is sparking widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. To see how the technology can change the world around us, here are some projects that highlight bold ideas in 3D print building.
Instant Neighborhood
Community building takes on new meaning with the creation of a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Tabasco, Mexico, aimed at tackling global homelessness. American non-profit New Story and tech company ICON built each concrete house from start to completion in 24 hours. New Story says its aim is to provide shelter for people without homes around the world.
Nested Housing
Shamballa is the idea of Italian 3D print construction company WASP. This project uses soil and straw to build a home in days that cost only 48 Euros in materials and energy. Its round designs are based on the wasp(黄蜂)nest. Each home features a laboratory with a desktop 3D printer for making furniture, artistic objects and more.
Think Schools
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world’s most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D print technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete in under a week.
Concrete Steps
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16 metre long curved Striatus footbridge in a couple of days. The project used500 layers of concrete and53 hollow blocks, held in place by compression(压缩). This reduces materials by up to 70 percent, and the entire bridge can be pulled down and recycled.
21.What could be the inspiration behind the design of Nested Housing?
A.A featured laboratory. B.A forward-thinking school
C.A round wasp nest. D.A long stone bridge.
22.Which 3D construction project can be torn down and reused?
A.Instant Neighborhood. B.Concrete Steps.
C.Think School. D.Nested Housing.
23.What do these four 3D building projects have in common?
A.They use local materials. B.They are affordable to the homeless
C.They are high in cost. D.They make construction faster.

I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not clean away. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.
Easier said than done, of course. I didn’t realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机). By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies (便士). By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.
I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today, I still accept risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention.
24.What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner?
A.His willingness to help mom. B.His curiosity about machines.
C.His trouble in doing family chores. D.His discontent with existing cleaners.
25.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.The help from the author’s wife. B.The financial problems of the family.
C.The tough process of the new invention. D.The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.
26.Why did the companies refuse to license the author’s technology?
A.They thought they might suffer loss. B.They considered it not good enough.
C.They faced legal problems themselves. D.They had begun making such machines.
27.What lesson may the author learn from the experience?
A.Think twice before acting. B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.A good beginning makes a good ending.

Rosie, a three-year-old black Labrador dog, can do something no person in the world is able to do. She smells four containers of urine (尿液) samples and correctly chooses the one that belongs to a National Health Service patient with bladder (膀胱) cancer. To show it is not just by accident, Rosie’s trainers keep changing the order of the containers. Again and again, the dog finds the cancer sample correctly.
Scientists believe this ability could be the beginning of a major change in how we detect cancer. But it has been difficult for researchers to find a way to use this on a large scale in real-world medical settings. It would simply not be practical for the health service to let a group of dogs smell patients in busy hospital waiting rooms.
Now, however, technology has offered an answer. Dr Andreas Mershin, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has worked with the organization Medical Detection Dogs to create an electronic nose, or “e-nose”. This device was developed by training artificial intelligence to copy the way dogs react to the smelly chemicals found in urine. Once the machine learns this, it can also “smell” urine samples by detecting those same tiny chemicals in the air.
The e-nose is now being tested on more than 500 urine samples from patients at Milton Keynes University Hospital, to see if it is as accurate as the dogs. Dr Mershin hopes it can be approved as a medical tool in hospitals within two years. He also said the technology could one day even be built into smartphones.
The team of scientists and dog trainers works closely with local doctors, who are very hopeful about what the e-nose could achieve. They believe it could lead to tests that do not require any cutting or entering the body. Such tests would be especially important for illnesses where people often delay getting checked because they feel embarrassed, waiting until they experience troubling symptoms.
28.What is the limitation of using dogs for cancer detection?
A.They are not accurate enough. B.They are hard to use widely.
C.They are too expensive to train. D.They are too difficult to control.
29.What can we infer about the e-nose?
A.It may be used in phones. B.It has been applied in treatment.
C.It works better than trained dogs. D.It can only detect chemicals in urine.
30.What will be possibly discussed in the following paragraph?
A.Methods of keeping healthy. B.Better ways to train Rosie.
C.Causes of bladder cancer. D.Further device tests.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.New Ways to Train Working Dogs. B.Dogs with Special Smelling Skills.
C.An AI Device for Cancer Detection. D.Traditional Tools for Bladder Cancer.
D
You, along with all living things, produce weak light that glows (发出微弱稳定的光) until you die, according to a recent study. It’s called ultraweak photon emission (UPE) and is a natural product of your metabolism (新陈代谢). UPE is produced when chemicals in your cells create unstable molecules (分子) known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) as by-products of your body’s metabolism. When ROS levels rise, they cause other molecules to become “excited”, meaning they carry excess (额外的) energy. It’s this energy that causes light to be released.
“I normally point out that UPE is a result of a biochemical process and in that sense is related to what happens in a glow-stick,” Dr Daniel Oblak, a physicist at the University of Calgary and last author of the study, said.
“UPE is so weak that it is not visible to the human eye and completely overwhelmed by other sources of light, unless you are in a completely dark room.”
That’s not to say that shutting your curtains and turning off your lights will allow you to see your own glow. This light is between 1,000 and 1,000,000 times weaker than the human eye can perceive. Using specialist cameras, scientists observed much more UPE being released by the living mice, compared to their dead bodies. Meanwhile, the leaves gave off much more light where they had been damaged, compared to undamaged areas.
That’s because they were experiencing more oxidative (氧化的) stress in damaged regions. But the dead mice did not glow, because their bodies weren’t metabolising anymore.
Oblak said that the key advantage of UPE is that it offers a non-invasive method of observing the health of living things.
“This could be used to track the condition of a tissue — for example, for use in transplants — or the level of stress an organism is subject to, such as for monitoring crop or forest health,” he said.
But this field is still full of unknowns. For instance, Oblak said, “Perhaps UPE is not just a byproduct of metabolic processes, but also serves a purpose.” Scientists just aren’t sure yet.
32.What causes ultraweak photon emission?
A.Direct exposure to bright light in a dark room.
B.The presence of reactive oxygen species in cells.
C.The use of specialized cameras on dead organisms.
D.The human eye’s ability to perceive dim light.
33.What can be learned about UPE from the text?
A.It is visible to the human eye without equipment.
B.It is a supernatural phenomenon.
C.It is generated through a biochemical process.
D.It is only produced by damaged tissues.
34.Why did the injured leaves give off more light than undamaged areas?
A.They were suffering more oxidative stress.
B.They were no longer metabolizing.
C.They produced more reactive oxygen species after death.
D.They were placed in a completely dark room.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain why dead organisms stop glowing.
B.To compare UPE in mice and plants.
C.To argue that UPE is a purposeful biological signal.
D.To introduce UPE and its potential applications.

Cloud storage is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind. 36 This means you can store all your digital things remotely, without taking up space on your computer. There are two options available: public cloud storage allows you to share hosting space with other users; private cloud storage is the ideal choice for companies who want to have their data stored in their own environment.
37 Once you have registered and set up your account, you simply save your files via the internet using your username and password. This ensures your data remains secure and inaccessible to anyone else. Should you choose, you can put certain permissions in place, which makes it easy to share your data with your colleagues or your family.
When you sign up to cloud storage, you can choose the amount of space you need. 38 You can store anything digital: all your files, videos and pictures. Whether you want to use this storage solution to store your family photographs or you want to use it to store your work documentation, you will find it quite convenient.
Is it better than your computer or an external drive? The answer is a definite yes. Computers crash all the time. 39 External hard drives can still break, or fail. Here you also have the added risk of misplacing it or having it stolen. There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data from wherever, whenever, to not needing expensive external storage devices. 40
A.You will find cloud storage very cheap.
B.Cloud storage is very simple to use.
C.It enables you to store your data on hosted servers.
D.This is the most common cause of lost work and memories.
E.Cloud storage providers offer multiple layers of data security.
F.The only disadvantage, however, is that you need internet to access files.
G.You can start with a small amount and increase the storage size later on.

A few months before I started high school, my parents gave me the best gift: a cellphone. I spent the whole summer with my face in the screen. I didn’t pay attention to my family or the things around me. Being online was more important than being with people.
So, you can guess how unhappy I was when I learned what my dad planned for our family vacation that year. “This year, ” my dad said, “we’re going to do something special. We’re going camping!” It was not my dream vacation because I was still thinking about my phone.
In fact, I was so busy looking at my phone that I didn’t look up until we drove across a bridge to the campsite. I looked out of the window and saw tall redwood trees. Their branches (树枝) seemed to touch the sky. I saw a river, with dark water showing between the white rapids (激流). The air from the open windows was hot. But none of that caught my eye. The reason I looked up was much more serious: my phone had no service (网络信号).
The last hour in the car was hard. My dad said he had chosen a campsite with no cell service, and my phone would be useless until we got home. I would be stuck in the forest for four days with no way to reach the outside world!
On the first day, I went through every teenage feeling: I was angry, I asked for help, and I kept going between sadness and anger. I went to bed angrily that night. But when I woke up in the morning, something had changed.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右,可参考文中加粗词汇部分;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stopped looking at my phone and started looking around me.

In the following twenty three years, our aim has always been to produce a robot which can help people in their everyday tasks. Does Larry have someone controlling him? No, he's able to get things done by himself, thanks to a high tech computer system, which he Carries around with him. I can't see anything. Where is IT then? It's actually located inside his chest area. Listen to the next question. The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. IT was discovered both by englishman and an american in the same year. But IT was the american who first developed on a large scale during the eighteen sixties. Everybody was excited by this new material because I was so cheap. Poor workers were able to buy plastic collars. These plastic collars were hard and uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Poor mothers who had not been able to afford the toys for their children. We're now able to buy inexpensive ones made of plastic. However, plastic has one serious fault. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily. And when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What's worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down, so that causes serious pollution. We now use the term of White pollution to refer to plastic pollution. The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man made plastic was made over a hundred years ago.
B
C

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右,可参考文中加粗词汇部分;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stopped looking at my phone and started looking around me.

Smart Watches: A Double-Edged Sword for Students?
Nowadays, smart watches are becoming increasingly popular among students. Many students wear them to school every day.
The main benefit is that they can help students keep track of time and manage their schedules better, which is very useful for busy students. What’s more, some smart watches have health-monitoring functions that can remind students to exercise. However, there are also potential problems. One issue is that students may get distracted by the various apps on the watches during class, which affects their learning.
In my opinion, students should use smart watches wisely and only when necessary.
第二节 (满分25分)
I stopped looking at my phone and started looking around me. I walked out of the tent and saw how beautiful the forest was. The trees stood tall and quiet. Birds sang in the morning light. I saw a small river running beside the campsite. The water was so clear that I could see the stones at the bottom. For the first time, I felt peace. My dad came over with a smile. “Want to go for a walk?” he asked. I nodded. We walked along the river and talked about many things. I didn’t think about my phone at all. It felt good to just be there with him.
The next days went by fast because we did many fun things. We went fishing and I caught my first fish. Dad taught me how to make a fire. We cooked together and ate under the stars. At night, we sat by the fire and told stories. I even made friends with other kids at the campsite. We played games and ran through the forest. I laughed more than I had in a long time. When it was time to go home, I felt sad to leave. On the way back, I looked at my phone but didn’t turn it on. I just looked out the window and smiled. I realized that being present is better than being online.

听第10段材料,回答第17至20题。
17.Who first developed plastic on a large scale?
A.An American. B.An Englishman. C.A Frenchman.
18.What was the advantage of plastic collars?
A.They didn’t wear out easily.
B.They were easy to wash.
C.They were comfortable.
19.Why were the plastic toys a good idea for some mothers?
A.They were cheap.
B.They were colorful.
C.Kids preferred them.
20.What is talked about at the end of the speech?
A.The excitement caused by plastic.
B.Different uses of plastic.
C.The harmful side of plastic.
【答案】17.A 18.B 19.A 20.C
【原文】The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man-made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. It was discovered both by an Englishman and an American in the same year, but it was the American who first developed it on a large scale during the 1860s.
Everybody was excited by this new material because it was so cheap. Poor workers were able to buy plastic collars. These plastic collars were hard and uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Poor mothers, who had not been able to afford toys for their children, were now able to buy inexpensive ones made of plastic.
However, plastic has one serious fault. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily, and when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What’s worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down so it causes serious pollution. We now use the term “white pollution” to refer to plastic pollution.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

【答案】21.C 22.B 23.D

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.B
【导语】文章主要讲述了作者因不满现有吸尘器而发明无袋吸尘器的艰难历程及感悟。
【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.(二十年后,也就是在 1978 年,由于一直对这种机器的运作方式感到不满,我决定制造一款无袋式机器)”可知,作者对现有吸尘器的不满促使他制造无袋吸尘器。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段中“I didn’t realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机).(我没有意识到接下来的五年我会用来完善我的设计,这个过程产生了5127个不同的样机)”以及后文描述作者在发明过程中遇到的种种困难,可知本段主要讲述新发明的艰难过程。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business.(主要的吸尘器制造商已经建立了一种基于吸尘袋和滤网利润的商业模式。没有人会批准我的想法,不是因为这是一个坏想法,而是因为这对生意不利)”可知,公司拒绝授权作者的技术是因为他们认为这可能会让他们遭受损失。
27.推理判断题。根据第二段中“These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.(这些是艰难的时刻,但每一次失败都让我离解决问题更近了一步)”以及最后一段中“Today, I still accept risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention.(今天,我仍然接受风险和失败的可能性作为过程的一部分。没有什么比发明带来的兴奋更棒的了)”可知,作者从这次经历中学到了失败是成功之母。
C
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第二段“But it has been difficult for researchers to find a way to use this on a large scale in real-world medical settings(但研究人员一直很难找到一种方法,将这项技术大规模应用于现实医疗场景中。)”可知,用狗狗检测癌症的局限性是难以大规模应用于现实医疗场景。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段“He also said the technology could one day even be built into smartphones.(他还表示,这项技术有朝一日甚至能被内置到智能手机中。)”可知,关于电子鼻我们能推断出未来可能应用在手机上。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段“The e-nose is now being tested on more than 500 urine samples from patients at Milton Keynes University Hospital, to see if it is as accurate as the dogs. Dr Mershin hopes it can be approved as a medical tool in hospitals within two years.(这款电子鼻目前正在米尔顿凯恩斯大学医院,对500多份患者尿液样本进行测试,以此检验它是否能达到和嗅探犬一样的准确率。默欣博士希望它能在两年内获批,成为医院的正规医疗设备。)”可知,文章末尾讲电子鼻正在测试、等待获批医用,按照行文逻辑,下文最可能继续介绍设备的进一步测试与完善。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第三段“Dr Andreas Mershin, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has worked with the organization Medical Detection Dogs to create an electronic nose, or ‘e-nose’.(麻省理工学院的安德烈亚斯・默欣博士与医疗探测犬组织合作,研发出了一款电子鼻。)”
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.A 35.D
根据第一段中“UPE is produced when chemicals in your cells create unstable molecules (分子) known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) as by-products of your body’s metabolism. When ROS levels rise, they cause other molecules to become “excited”, meaning they carry excess (额外的) energy. It’s this energy that causes light to be released.( 当您细胞内的化学物质产生不稳定分子(即活性氧物质,简称 ROS)作为身体新陈代谢的副产品时,就会产生 UPE。当 ROS 水平升高时,它们会使其他分子“兴奋”,即它们携带过多的能量。正是这种能量导致光被释放出来。)”可知,细胞内存在活性氧物质导致了超弱光子的发射。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段““I normally point out that UPE is a result of a biochemical process and in that sense is related to what happens in a glow-stick,” Dr Daniel Oblak, a physicist at the University of Calgary and last author of the study, said.( “我通常会指出,UPE 是一种生物化学过程的结果,从这个意义上说,它与发光棒所发生的情况有关,”卡尔加里大学的物理学家丹尼尔·奥布拉克博士(该研究的最后作者)说道。)”可知,UPE 是通过生化过程产生的。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段“That’s because they were experiencing more oxidative (氧化的) stress in damaged regions. But the dead mice did not glow, because their bodies weren’t metabolising anymore.( 这是因为受损区域的生物体承受着更多的氧化应激。但死鼠不会发光,因为它们的体内不再进行新陈代谢。)”可知,受损的叶子比未受损的区域能发出更多的光是因为受损区域遭受了更多氧化应激。
35.推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段“But this field is still full of unknowns. For instance, Oblak said, “Perhaps UPE is not just a byproduct of metabolic processes, but also serves a purpose.”
【答案】36.C 37.B 38.G 39.D 40.F
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了云存储的优势、使用方法、存储空间选择以及与传统存储方式的对比。
【详解】36.根据上文“Cloud storage is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind. 【答案】

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右,可参考文中加粗词汇部分;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
