How do people end up homelessness? What can we do to stop this from happening?

A friend invited us to help serve dinner at Tent City. There were a number of tents for the homeless in it. I took my two boys with me. They were 9 and 5 at the time. They had a lot of questions because this was different from their common ideas about people’s ways of living. “Why don’t they have homes?” “Why don’t they get food as we usually do?”“Why don’t they live in the same way as us?”

We talked about the reasons and the importance of making a safety net (安全保障) for them. The people we served were both the young and the old. Many of them were losing teeth or had dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were quite grateful to me because I brought the boys. For many of them, it was fun to have active, joyful children around.

After dinner, I saw my older son sitting together with several old men. They were talking about sports in front of a small television set. My son was having a great time sharing and hearing stories.

As some people went back to their tents, I heard him tell them, “Thanks so much for coming to dinner with us.” page number 1
