The Science of Habit Formation
Why do some people succeed in keeping their resolutions while others fail? The answer lies in how habits are formed. According to research, habits follow a three-step pattern: cue, routine, and reward.
The cue is a trigger that tells your brain to start a behavior. It could be a time of day, a location, or an emotional state. The routine is the behavior itself. The reward is the benefit you get from the behavior, which makes your brain remember the habit loop.
For example, if you want to start exercising, choose a specific cue — like putting your running shoes by your bed. When you see them in the morning, that’s your cue to go for a run. After the run, you reward yourself with a healthy breakfast. Over time, this loop becomes automatic.
To change a bad habit, you need to keep the same cue and reward but change the routine. For instance, if you snack when you’re stressed, replace the snacking with a short walk or deep breathing. This way, you’re still responding to the stress (cue) and getting relief (reward), but you’re doing something healthier.
Building new habits takes time — an average of 66 days, according to a study. Be patient and consistent. Remember, small changes accumulate into big results.
26. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How to make New Year’s resolutions. B. The three-step pattern of habit formation. C. Why people fail to keep their promises. D. The benefits of regular exercise.
27. What is the “cue” in the habit loop?
A. The behavior itself. B. The benefit you receive. C. The trigger that starts the behavior. D. The time it takes to form a habit.
28. According to the passage, how can you change a bad habit?
A. Remove the cue entirely. B. Change the routine but keep the cue and reward. C. Increase the reward. D. Ignore the cue.
29. How long does it typically take to form a new habit?
A. 21 days. B. 30 days. C. 66 days. D. 90 days.
30. What does the underlined word “accumulate” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. 减少 B. 积累 C. 消失 D. 改变

① The concept of “ikigai” comes from Japan and roughly translates to “reason for being.” It refers to the intersection of four elements: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Finding your ikigai is considered the key to a fulfilling life.
② Many people struggle to find their ikigai because they focus on only one or two of these elements. For example, someone might choose a career only for money, leaving them feeling empty. Another might follow their passion but struggle financially. The ideal career sits at the center of all four circles.
③ To discover your ikigai, start by making lists. Write down what you love doing, what you are naturally good at, what problems you see in the world, and what kind of work you could get paid for. Then, look for the overlaps. Where do these lists meet?
④ It’s important to remember that ikigai is not a destination but a journey. Your ikigai may change over time as you grow and gain new experiences. Regularly reflecting on these four elements can help you stay on track.
⑤ In a world that often pushes us to specialize early, the ikigai philosophy reminds us that a meaningful life comes from balancing personal fulfillment with contribution to others. It encourages us to think deeply about what truly matters.

33. Why do some people feel empty despite having good jobs?
A. Because they don’t work hard enough. B. Because they only focus on money. C. Because they don’t have enough qualifications. D. Because they live in the wrong country.
34. What does the writer say about ikigai changing over time?
A. It is a sign of failure. B. It is natural and expected. C. It should be avoided. D. It only happens to old people.
35. Which structure best shows the passage?
A. ①—②③—④⑤ B. ①②—③④—⑤ C. ①—②③④—⑤ D. ①②③—④—⑤
