(26-27高二·全国·暑假作业)Just being smart doesn’t guarantee someone will be successful. And just being less smart doesn’t mean that the person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.
She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality (品质) independent of smarts. They had what she now calls perseverance. Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.
In one study of people aged 25 and above, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that perseverance increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the perseverance test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how smarts and perseverance influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the perseverance test. Students with higher grades seem to have more perseverance. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this perseverance means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on perseverance. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And perseverance did not predict success, Credé found. Nevertheless, he thinks perseverance is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It’s a basic personality quality, Credé notes — not something that can be changed.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected with school grades than perseverance,” Credé says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with perseverance.”
1.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Smart people may not succeed. B.Success has nothing to do with smarts.

3.What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

4.What is Credé’s opinion about perseverance?

C.It should be paid no attention to in teaching. D.It can’t influence students’ school grades.
(25-26高二下·江西上饶·期末)38-year-old Chris Ringot lives in Missouri and was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症). He began taking part in the Special Olympics at the age of 10 and has kept it up for decades. He has tried various events including golf, bowling and basketball, but swimming is his lifelong favorite. The first time he swam in a pool, he showed extraordinary natural talent and quickly fell in love with this sport.
Swimming soon became the most important part of his life. The friendship and team atmosphere in the Special Olympics meant a lot to him, especially during his teenage years. Chris turned into a top athlete in competitions. In 2011, he was selected to join the Special Olympics World Games held in Greece, where his relay team won a gold medal. This unforgettable experience became a precious memory for him.
After returning home from the World Games, Chris was invited to give inspirational speeches to local communities and schools. His speech at his alma mater was praised by a local newspaper editor as the best back-to-school speech he had ever heard.
Last year, Chris was inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame. This honor recognized not only his athletic achievements but also his positive influence on other disabled athletes. His elder sister Carrie said she never doubted Chris’s success. “Our parents set a good example for us. They always told us Chris can do anything I can do, and often he does it better,” she said.
Chris is also grateful to his parents for teaching him to give back to the community. He serves in his local church with his wife and has worked as an assistant in a children’s hospital for seven years. (25-26高二下·湖南长沙·期末)Alita has been highly sensitive to criticism since she was a child. “Three years ago we did patient satisfaction surveys,” explains Alita, who is now a distinguished doctor. “My patients loved the attention I gave them, and my reviews were largely positive. Yet there were a few patients who complained that I sometimes ran late. I haven’t felt the same way about my practice since.”
Sound familiar? If you’re like Alita, you’ve probably been hearing the same advice for much of your life: “Don’t be so sensitive.” Yet new research suggests that this is far harder for some than others.
Three factors can be used to measure our sensitivity to feedback (反馈). The first is Baseline. Some people have a relatively high baseline — they always seem so cheerful no matter how much pressure they are under. Others may have a relatively low happiness baseline, being dissatisfied with their lives, regardless of how well things may be going.
The second variable is Swing. For someone with small swing, nothing excites them much, and few things really get them too upset. If you swing wider emotionally, your ups and downs will be more intense and you’ll require less stimulation to move you off your baseline.
And finally, Sustain or Recovery. How long do you sustain a bounce in your step in the wake of an appreciative email from an important customer? How long does it take you to recover from the public dressing-down you got from your boss on the newsroom floor?
Researchers estimate that biological makeup accounts for about 40% of how we react, and whether it’s a little more or a little less doesn’t matter. The bigger point is that a significant part of how we react to negative feedback comes not from our biological makeup, but rather, from the story we tell ourselves about what the feedback means.
We can all learn to manage feedback more skillfully by learning how to see the feedback at “actual size.” Feedback should be bound in time (feedback about right now is not about the future) and by specificity (feedback about one thing is not about everything) and by size (needing to improve by 10% is different from needing to improve by 80%).
1.What do we know about Alita?
A.She values her work over her emotions.
B.She is overly affected by negative comments.
C.She uses patient surveys to improve her job.
D.She has decided to change her work attitude.
2.Which describes a person with a low baseline and a wide swing?
A.Being easily upset and sensitive to feedback.
B.Staying calm and content despite hardships.
C.Feeling low often but rarely reacting strongly.
D.Being always cheerful but overreacting to criticism.
3.What does “Sustain or Recovery” refer to?
A.The ability to stay positive. B.The frequency of bad emotions.
C.The tendency to dismiss feedback. D.The duration of emotional impact.
4.What is key to managing feedback effectively?
A.Focusing on future outcomes.
B.Responding to all feedback equally.
C.Understanding our biological reactions.
D.Interpreting feedback clearly and specifically.

C.Perseverance is a quality dependent on smarts. D.Perseverance decides how smart one might be.
2.What might influence a person’s perseverance according to Angela Duckworth’s findings?
A.Lifestyles. B.Family tradition. C.Education. D.Personality types.
3.What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Warn. B.Reply. C.Accept. D.Doubt.
4.What is Credé’s opinion about perseverance?
A.It is strongly related to test anxiety. B.It can hardly be taught in school.
C.It should be paid no attention to in teaching. D.It can’t influence students’ school grades.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B
根据第一段“Just being smart doesn’t guarantee someone will be successful. And just being less smart doesn’t mean that the person will fail. (仅仅聪明并不能保证某人就会成功。而且仅仅不太聪明也不意味着这个人就会失败。)”可知,聪明的人也可能不会成功。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段“She also found that perseverance increases with education. (她还发现毅力随着教育程度的提高而增加。)”可知,教育可能影响一个人的毅力。
3.词句猜测题。根据第四段“So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the perseverance test. Students with higher grades seem to have more perseverance. (因此,她将测试智商的大学入学考试的分数与学校成绩和某人在毅力测试中的分数进行了比较。成绩越高的学生似乎更有毅力。)”可知,Angela Duckworth的研究发现毅力和成功有很大关系,再结合划线词前的But可知,此处有转折。由此推知,一些人反对毅力意味着成功这个观点,counter意思应该是“反对,质疑”,与doubt意思相近。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段“‘Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected with school grades than perseverance,’ Credé says. ‘We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,’ he adds. ‘I’m not sure we can do that with perseverance.’ (‘学习习惯和技能、考试焦虑和出勤率与学校成绩的联系远比毅力更紧密,’克雷德说。‘我们可以教学生如何好好学习。我们可以帮助他们应对考试焦虑,’他补充道。‘我不确定我们能否对毅力做到这一点。’)”可知,克雷德认为毅力很难在学校中被教授。

根据文章第一段“Alita has been highly sensitive to criticism since she was a child.(艾丽塔从小就对批评高度敏感)”可知,她极易受到负面评价的影响。
根据文章第三段“Others may have a relatively low happiness baseline, being dissatisfied with their lives, regardless of how well things may be going.(另一些人快乐基准线较低,无论境遇多好都容易对生活不满。)”与第四段“If you swing wider emotionally, your ups and downs will be more intense and you’ll require less stimulation to move you off your baseline.(情绪波动幅度大的人,情绪起伏会更强烈,一点小事就会牵动情绪。)”
根据文章第五段“How long do you sustain a bounce in your step in the wake of an appreciative email from an important customer? How long does it take you to recover from the public dressing-down you got from your boss on the newsroom floor?(收到重要客户发来的赞许邮件后,这份愉悦轻快的心情能维持多久?若是在编辑部当众遭到上司严厉斥责,你又需要多长时间才能平复情绪?)”可推知,Sustain or Recovery指情绪影响持续的时长。
4.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“We can all learn to manage feedback more skillfully by learning how to see the feedback at ‘actual size.’ Feedback should be bound in time…and by specificity…and by size…(我们可以学会精准看待反馈,从时间……、具体事件……、影响程度……三个维度清晰客观解读反馈)”可知,有效处理反馈的关键是清晰、具体地解读反馈。
