Chengdu, China.
If visiting a place with happy locals is a top choice for you, there’s no better city to hit than Chengdu. It is home to pandas and spicy things. Moreover, the city’s richness of cultural and historical sights, together with its laid-back lifestyle, makes it one of the most attractive and livable large cities too. Like so many other ABCs (American-born Chinese) and younger first and second-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they’d grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “representation gap” as Sarah put it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the newly emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).
As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American takeout restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in America’s own food-obsessed culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life. What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept — The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin is proud that The Woks of Life follows along the line of pioneers — folks like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the mainstream in the US. “We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, showing that there’s a huge demand for these recipes,” she says. “It’s about representation, yes, but there’s also a huge demand. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”
Five years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to find a ton of Chinese recipes in the New York Times food section, Kaitlin notes. Now you can.
24.What do the underlined words “representation gap” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The shortage of Chinese chefs. B.The lack of Chinese food recipes.
C.The gap between young and old ABCs. D.The difference between chefs and bloggers.
25.What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To prove how unique the Leungs are.
B.To tell why the Leungs prefer Chinese food.
C.To stress the Leungs’ love for home cooking food.
D.To show the Leungs’ advantage to start a food blog.
26.What makes The Woks of Life special?
A.The concept of baking Chinese food. B.The pioneers that it follows proudly.
C.The bloggers’ way of posting recipes. D.The sharing of recipes across generations.
27.What is the significance of The Woks of Life?
A.It develops many new Chinese recipes. B.It links ABCs with their food tradition.
C.It strengthens bonds between Americans. D.It marks the popularity of Chinese cuisine.

Plastics (塑料) are amazing materials which are widely used in our daily lives. Besides, they’re often cheap to make. About 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced to date. That’s about 1,400 times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Some of that plastic is still in use. But about 5.8 billion metric tons have been thrown away.
All that plastic waste is an environmental threat. Only about 9 percent of plastic waste has been recycled. Another 12 percent has been burned. The remaining 79 percent ended up in landfills or in nature, which, like the Lego block, takes a long time to decompose (降解).
Plastic litters the world from the highest mountaintop to the deepest seafloor. Many animals might regard this rubbish as food. If they get full, these animals may forget to eat real food and suffer. Plastic rubbish in the oceans also leaves birds, turtles and other wildlife in a jam.
Big pieces of plastic aren’t the only problem. Abandoned plastic can break into tiny bits called microplastics. Winds blow these bits far and wide. Ocean waves can spread them through the sea. They build up inside animals and also get into our food and drinking water. Each American is likely to consume (摄入/吞食) more than 70,000 microplastic pieces per year. Right now, no one knows what risk that might bring.
Scientists have some ideas about how to clean up this mess. The Ocean Cleanup is developing cleanup systems to fish out plastic pieces from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. And new technology could help microplastics decompose in the environment. But as far as I know, many of these plans are still far from effective (有效的) so far. The best way to help Earth right now is to stop buying so much plastic — and then throwing it out — in the first place.
28.What does the Lego block show about plastic waste?
A.It is hard to break down. B.Little of it has been burned.
C.It is easy to be recycled. D.Most of it ends up in landfills.
29.How might the plastic rubbish influence animals?
A.By making them suffer from hunger. B.By reducing their food.
C.By piling up in their homes. D.By changing the environment.
30.What is the author’s attitude to the present methods of cleaning plastic waste?
A.Objective(客观的). B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Favorable.
31.Why does the author write the text?
A.To criticize plastic production.
B.To suggest ways to deal with environmental issues.
C.To call on people to protect the environment.
D.To introduce the present(目前的) situation of plastic pollution.

Food can tell us much about society, history, and even our dreams. What is considered luxury (奢侈的) food changes over time. Let’s find out how foods become popular and then go out of style.
History shows many foods’ status (地位) has changed. In 18th-century Europe, pineapples were uncommon and expensive, grown in heated glasshouses. They were used at parties to show off wealth, not for eating. However, once steamships could transport them, they became common and lost their luxury status. Similarly, oysters were once a cheap food for the poor in the 18th and 19th centuries. But overfishing and pollution made them hard to find, increasing their value and turning them into a symbol of fine dining.
Some items like sugar, tea, coffee, and cocoa were once expensive gifts only the rich could afford. Europeans’ desire for them led to control over foreign lands and the use of enslaved labor. As production grew, costs dropped, making them everyday items for everyone, though they still appear in luxury gift sets.
The story of lobster (龙虾) is also surprising. It was so common on the US East Coast that it was fed to prisoners. Railway companies started serving canned lobster to passengers, who turned out to enjoy it. This new demand made lobster a luxury item in restaurants.
Several factors make a food luxurious. Scarcity is key — if a food is hard to get, like the historical pineapple, it becomes more valuable. High cost, often due to skilled labor, also makes food limited, like Japanese Wagyu beef. Marketing plays a big role too. If famous people or social media advertise a food, it can quickly become a must-have item, even if it’s not rare.
Looking ahead, climate change may make some foods luxurious again. Chocolate and coffee are becoming harder to grow, which may make them expensive in the future. A new idea of sustainable (可持续的) luxury is also appearing. People want food that is not only special but also good for the earth, so they care about how food is produced. The true luxury isn’t just about how expensive or uncommon something is.
32.Why were pineapples luxurious in the past?
A.They were easy to cook. B.They were difficult to get.
C.They were good for health. D.They were transported by steamships.
33.What can be inferred from the lobster’s story in paragraph 4?
A.A food’s status can rise with short supply.
B.A food’s status can rise with increased demand.
C.A food’s status can drop with lower production cost.
D.A food’s status can change with new ways to market.
34.What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.Luxury foods will become cheaper.
B.People no longer care about the cost of food.
C.Sustainable luxury will become popular.
D.Climate change may resulting little effect on food prices.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Climate Change Turns Some Foods Luxurious
B.From Prison to Palace: The Path of Luxury Foods
C.Modern Technology Makes Many Luxuries Affordable
D.From Common to Costly: Why Certain Foods Become Luxurious

In class, he often felt lonely among his classmates, always lost in his own thoughts. As a result, he became increasingly unhappy and his learning performance began to get worse.
Mr. Smith, the headteacher, noticed his unhappiness. One Friday afternoon, the teacher walked to him and said, “Tom, I’ve noticed that you’ve been a bit down lately. Is there anything wrong? Are you willing to share your feelings with me?” Hesitating (犹豫) for a moment, Tom said in a low voice, “I just can’t fit in here. I miss my parents and old friends so much, and it seems that I have little in common with the classmates here.” They talked for a long time that afternoon.
The next Monday, it was time for the class to change seats as usual and the headteacher asked Jack, an outgoing and helpful boy, to sit next to Tom. Jack said cheerfully, “I’d like to make friends with you.” Tom was amazed by Jack’s friendly offer, but soon felt a wave of warmth flowing through his heart. Chengdu, China.
If visiting a place with happy locals is a top choice for you, there’s no better city to hit than Chengdu. It is home to pandas and spicy things. Its thick jungle will give you a good chance to uncover a paradise of your own.

根据Con Dao, Vietnam部分中的“Con Dao Island Nation Park, a group of dramatic tiny islands off the southern coast, is a great destination to see sea turtles and other wildlife while exploring the area on foot. (昆岛国家公园是位于南部海岸附近的一组景色优美的小岛群,是观赏海龟与野生生物、徒步游玩的好去处。)”以及Zakynthos, Greece部分中的“Although there are plenty of free things to do, the favorite is spending time on the beautiful beaches edged by electric blue water.
根据第一段中的“Like so many other ABCs (American-born Chinese) and younger first and second-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they’d grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “representation gap” as Sarah put it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the newly emerging food blogosphere
根据第二段中的“As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American takeout restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in America’s own food-obsessed culture.(然而事实证明,梁家人具备独有的优势来解决这个问题。父亲比尔曾在自家的美式中餐外卖店做了多年的牛肉料理。母亲朱迪在上海出生长大,深谙传统本帮菜烹饪之道。与此同时,姐妹俩在新泽西郊区长大,既吃着父母做的中餐,也浸润在美国本土的美食文化氛围中)”可知,该段主要介绍梁家人的厨艺背景和成长环境,目的是说明他们创办美食博客的优势。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept — The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.(她们的博客与众不同之处在于,梁家人所珍视的代际厨艺传承理念,被深深融入了博客的创办核心中——一家四口轮流发布菜谱,每个人都分享自己的拿手菜,发挥各自的专长)”可知,The Woks of Life的独特之处在于家族几代人共同分享菜谱。故选D项。
根据第四段中的““We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, showing that there’s a huge demand for these recipes,” she says. “It’s about representation, yes, but there’s also a huge demand. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”(她说:“过去十年里,我们留下了意义非凡的印记,证明这类菜谱有着巨大的需求,这让我们倍感自豪。这当然和文化代表性有关,但确实需求旺盛。亚裔美国人都希望与祖辈传承的饮食文化重新建立联结”)”可知,这个博客的意义在于帮助美国出生的华裔等亚裔群体,重新联结自身的饮食文化传统。故选B项。

【答案】28.A 29.A 30.C 31.D
根据文章第二段内容“The remaining 79 percent ended up in landfills or in nature, which, like the Lego block, takes a long time to decompose.(剩下的79%最终被填埋或进入大自然,就像乐高积木一样,需要很长时间才能分解。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段内容“Many animals might regard this rubbish as food. If they get full, these animals may forget to eat real food and suffer.(许多动物可能把这些垃圾当作食物。如果它们吃饱了,这些动物可能会忘记吃真正的食物而受苦。)”可知,许多动物把塑料垃圾当作食物,如果它们吃撑了,就可能会忘记吃真正的食物,从而遭受饥饿之苦。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段内容“But as far as I know, many of these plans are still far from effective so far.(但据我所知,到目前为止,这些计划中的许多还远未生效。)”
通读文章内容,结合第一段关键语句“Plastics are amazing materials which are widely used in our daily lives. Besides, they’re often cheap to make. About 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced to date.(塑料是一种神奇的材料,广泛应用于我们的日常生活中。此外,它们的制造成本通常很低。迄今为止,已经生产了大约83亿吨塑料。)”,第二段“All that plastic waste is an environmental threat.(所有这些塑料垃圾都是对环境的威胁。)”以及最后一段“But as far as I know, many of these plans are still far from effective so far. The best way to help Earth right now is to stop buying so much plastic — and then throwing it out — in the first place.(但据我所知,到目前为止,这些计划中的许多还远未奏效。现在帮助地球的最好方法是首先停止购买这么多塑料,然后扔掉。)”可知,全文围绕塑料污染的现状展开,包括产量、处理方式、危害及应对方案,由此推知,其核心目的是介绍塑料污染的整体情况。故选D项。

根据第2段中“In 18th-century Europe, pineapples were uncommon and expensive, grown in heated glasshouses. They were used at parties to show off wealth, not for eating. However, once steamships could transport them, they became common and lost their luxury status(在18世纪的欧洲,菠萝稀有且昂贵,需在温室中培育。它们是用来在聚会上炫富的,而不是用来吃的。然而,一旦蒸汽船能够运输菠萝,它们就变得常见,也失去了其奢侈地位)”可知,过去菠萝之所以奢侈是因为它们难以获取。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据第4段中“The story of lobster is also surprising. It was so common on the US East Coast that it was fed to prisoners. Railway companies started serving canned lobster to passengers, who turned out to enjoy it. This new demand made lobster a luxury item in restaurants.(龙虾的故事也令人惊讶。它在美国东海岸非常普遍,以至于被喂给囚犯。铁路公司开始为乘客提供龙虾罐头,结果乘客们都很喜欢。这种新的需求使龙虾成为餐馆里的奢侈品。)”可知,龙虾从一种给犯人吃的普通食物变成餐厅里的奢侈食品,其地位提升的直接驱动力是乘客喜爱带来的新需求。由此可推断,一种食物的地位可以随着需求的增加而上升。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“A new idea of sustainable luxury is also appearing. People want food that is not only special but also good for the earth, so they care about how food is produced(一种全新的可持续奢侈理念也正在兴起。人们想要的食物不仅独特,还要对地球有益,因此他们会关注食物的生产方式)”可知,可持续的奢侈食品将会受到大众青睐。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。根据第1段中“What is considered luxury food changes over time. Let’s find out how foods become popular and then go out of style(哪些食物被视为奢侈品会随着时间而变化。让我们一起来探究食物是如何变得流行又逐渐过时的)”以及全文对多种食物从普通到昂贵的转变原因分析可知,文章的核心是说明部分食物为何会变成奢侈品。选项D“从普通到昂贵:某些食物为何成为奢侈”最全面、准确地概括了这一主题。故选D。

Tom was in high school for half a year, yet he still didn’t adapt (适应) to the new school life. He was unwilling to communicate with others.

D

Tom was in high school for half a year, yet he still didn’t adapt (适应) to the new school life. He was unwilling to communicate with others.
