One Hour Closer

Before the final exam, my mother pointedly handed me a notebook packed with words. “Your screen time is off for the next hour,” she said. It took me several tries to locate some words in a dictionary, and I took down every new entry that I looked up to measure how much I'd acquired. The bookshelf held nothing but assigned reading and dictionaries, seemingly bearing witness to my appetite for knowledge. Each focused hour got me there — a little closer to doing well in the exam.
