Unit 3 Food and Culture
Using Language
Food identifies who we are, where we came from, and what we want to be.
—Warren Belasco

Put more simply, while people continue to argue over whether or not fatty food is dangerous, we already know that sugar is a killer.
While staying in Beijing, I visited several places of historical interest.
①Men tended to be violent while women acted in the opposite way.
② While I was working for a wedding, the pearl necklace Mum had left me disappeared.
③ She worked in a bank for a while before studying law.
④ While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits.
2. It is up to sb to do sth“由某人决定做某事”
原文:It is up to you to decide how you want to live, and to make the right decisions about your diet.
It is up to sb to do sth 其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式to do sth;up to sb表示“取决于某人、由某人作主”。
It is up to us to choose how we respond to difficulties in life.
1. is up to you to decide whether we should accept the offer.
2. It is up to the government (take) effective measures to protect the environment.
1. regardless of/ despite/ in spite of
in spite of意思和 despite 基本相同,都表示“尽管……”。
despite和in spite of后面通常接名词、代词或动名词,不能直接接普通的完整句子;需要接完整句子时,可以使用despite/in spite of the fact that + 从句。
despite = 尽管,后面没有 of
in spite of = 尽管,必须保留 of
✅ Regardless of whether the weather improves, the rescue team will continue searching through the night.
❌ Despite whether the weather improves, the rescue team will continue searching through the night.
✅ In spite of the severe storm, the rescue workers continued searching until early morning.
❌ Despite of the severe storm, the rescue workers continued searching until early morning.
而in spite of是一个完整的固定短语,其中的of不能省略。
2. dairy/ diary/ daily
常见搭配有dairy products(乳制品)、dairy farm(乳牛场)、dairy industry(乳制品行业)。读音通常为/ˈdeə.ri/或/ˈder.i/。
常见搭配有keep a diary(写日记)、write in a diary(在日记中写)。
✅ The nutritionist advised Emma to avoid dairy products because they caused severe stomach pain.
❌ The nutritionist advised Emma to avoid diary products because they caused severe stomach pain.
✅ Marcus writes in his diary every evening to record important events from his daily life.
❌ Marcus writes in his daily every evening to record important events from his diary life.
3. somehow/ somewhat
somehow = 怎样做到的并不清楚
somewhat = 程度上有一点
✅ Somehow, we managed to find the missing documents before the meeting began this morning.
❌ Somewhat, we managed to find the missing documents before the meeting began this morning.
✅ The final report was somewhat longer than the manager had originally requested from us.
❌ The final report was somehow longer than the manager had originally requested from us.
4. basic/ fundamental
还常用于结构be fundamental to...,表示“对……
✅ She bought a basic phone because she only needed calls and text messages.
❌ She bought a fundamental phone because she only needed calls and text messages.
✅ The company needs fundamental changes because its entire business model no longer works.
⚠ The company needs basic changes because its entire business model no longer works.
1. as to关于;至于
We had a long discussion as to the best solution to this problem.
❌ We had a long discussion as to solve this difficult problem.
2. die from/ of死于……
Many people died of the serious disease during that cold winter.
❌ Many people died from the serious disease during that cold winter.
3. recommend doing sth
Teachers recommend taking short breaks after studying for forty-five minutes.
❌ Teachers recommend to take short breaks after studying for forty-five minutes.
4. limit ... to ...
The teacher limits our classroom discussion to using English only.
❌ The teacher limits our classroom discussion to use English only.
5. a key to ...……的关键
a key to + 名词/动名词,表示“……
Regular practice is a key to improving your English speaking skills.
❌ Regular practice is a key to improve your English speaking skills.
1. There is evidence that...
课文:However, there is increasing evidence that the real driver of poor health is not so much fatty food, as it is sugar.
There is strong evidence that success depends not so much on talent as on steady practice.
❌ There is strong evidence which success depends not so much on talent than on steady practice.
2. 主语 + be + 倍数 + as likely to do + as + 比较对象
课文:And in America, people who receive 25% of their daily calories or more through sugar are twice as likely to die from heart disease than people who receive less than 10% a day.
易错点:在考试英语和规范写作中,倍数比较通常使用twice as likely ... as ...,不宜使用twice as likely ... than ...。
Employees who sleep well are twice as likely to solve difficult problems as those who stay awake late.
❌ Employees who sleep well are twice as likely to solve difficult problems than those who stay awake late.
In other words, if you want to be healthy, you have to cut down on desserts, and cut out sweet drinks altogether.
If you want to improve your writing, you have to read widely and practise composing paragraphs regularly.
❌ If you will want to improve your writing, you have to read widely and practising composing paragraphs regularly.
4. What主语从句 + is + that表语从句
课文:What this means is that people who chew too quickly end up eating too much food because they still feel hungry.
What the survey suggests is that customers who receive quick replies end up trusting the company more.
❌ What does the survey suggest is that customers who receive quick replies end up to trust the company more.
5. It is better to do A rather than (to) do B
课文:It is also better to eat a modest amount of food each time, rather than to eat a lot in one meal, and then a little in the next.
It is better to do。
It is better to review vocabulary daily rather than to memorize hundreds of words before one exam.
❌ It is better to review vocabulary daily rather than memorizing hundreds of words before one exam.

$Unit 3 Food and Culture
Using Language
Food identifies who we are, where we came from, and what we want to be.
—Warren Belasco

Put more simply, while people continue to argue over whether or not fatty food is dangerous, we already know that sugar is a killer.
While staying in Beijing, I visited several places of historical interest.
①Men tended to be violent while women acted in the opposite way. 然而
② While I was working for a wedding, the pearl necklace Mum had left me disappeared. 当……时
③ She worked in a bank for a while before studying law.
④ While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits. 虽然
While I was doing my homework, my mother was preparing dinner in the kitchen.
While some people prefer city life, others enjoy living in the countryside.
You should be especially careful while crossing the street.
1. It is up to you to decide whether we should accept the offer.

1. regardless of/ despite/ in spite of
in spite of意思和 despite 基本相同,都表示“尽管……”。
despite和in spite of后面通常接名词、代词或动名词,不能直接接普通的完整句子;需要接完整句子时,可以使用despite/in spite of the fact that + 从句。
despite = 尽管,后面没有 of
in spite of = 尽管,必须保留 of
✅ Regardless of whether the weather improves, the rescue team will continue searching through the night.
3. somehow/ somewhat
somehow = 怎样做到的并不清楚
somewhat = 程度上有一点
