“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf.” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can it be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any holes-in-one on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
4. Why does the author quote the poem?
A. To express the meaning of life.
B. To show the impact of choices.
C. To explain the challenges the poet met.
D. To introduce the general views to choices.
5. What does the author think of playing golf?
A. It leads to self-satisfaction.
B. It is the most challenging sports.
C. Its result is measurable.
D. It shows the potential for both gain and loss.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork?
A. Content. B. Unclear. C. Regretful. D. Doubtful.
7. Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Every path has its own scenery. D. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
C
For a long time, scientists believed the beautiful songs of birds were purely a product of instinct (本能). Peter Marler, a pioneering British animal behaviorist, revolutionized this view through his research into how birds actually learn to sing, earning him the title “the father of birdsong.”
Marler’s fascination began in his youth, observing chaffinches (苍头燕雀) in the English countryside. He noticed slight but consistent differences in the songs of birds from different regions, much like human dialects. This curiosity defined his career. In the 1950s, he began carefully recording these songs. Using a crucial tool called a spectrogram, which visually represents sound, he was able to scientifically confirm that these regional variations, or “dialects,” were indeed real. His famous study of the white-crowned sparrow in California clearly showed distinct dialects between northern and southern populations.
The central question remained: were these dialects inherited or learned? To solve this, Marler designed a series of experiments that would later be regarded as models of clarity. He raised young birds in complete vocal isolation from adults. These isolated birds only produced simple, natural calls, proving that the full, complex song was not automatic. However, when he played recordings of adult songs to them during their critical learning period, they successfully learned and sang the complete tune. This was decisive evidence that birdsong is a culturally transmitted behavior.
Initially, his theory faced doubts from a scientific community that favored instinct-based explanations. The mainstream view still favored instinct, and some dismissed his work as an exception rather than a rule. Marler, however, quietly continued his careful studies. Gradually, his well-designed methods and undeniable evidence won over the community. By transforming lines of numbers into meaningful maps of sound and behavior, he gave the world new eyes to see what had always been hidden in plain hearing.
The impact of his work extended far beyond ornithology (鸟类学). It provided a powerful, simpler model for scientists studying the incredibly complex evolution of human language, suggesting our own speech may have roots in similar vocal learning processes.
8. What did Marler find while observing chaffinches?
A. Regional differences in birdsong. B. Common features in bird species.
C. Slight changes in bird population. D. Seasonal variations in dialects.
9. What do the underlined words “culturally transmitted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Found in human language. B. Learned from others in a community.
C. Passed down through genes. D. Spread within a single family.
10. What can we infer about Marler?
A. His findings were soon accepted. B. He truly respected others’ opinion.
C. He was the first to study bird behavior. D. He was a patient and careful scientist.
11. Why was Marler’s theory significant?
A. It promoted the study of human speech. B. It supported rare bird protection.
C. It proved the once-popular theory. D. It made bird research more popular.
D
David Uttal, a scientist at Northwestern University, has always been poor at finding his way. At 13, he got lost on a Boy Scout hike for two and a half days. The world is full of people like Uttal — and their opposites, the folks who always seem to know exactly where they are and how to get where they want to go.
These differences are obvious but explaining them has proved challenging. Now, research using virtual reality suggests that to some extent, navigational (导航的) skills are shaped by upbringing.
A 2020 study highlighted this. The researchers compared the performance of more than 2,600 twins as they navigated through a virtual environment to test whether navigational ability runs in families. It does, they found — but only modestly. Instead, the biggest contributor to people’s performance was what geneticists call “nonshared environmental factors” — the unique experiences each person accumulates as their life unfolds. Good navigators, it appears, are mostly made, not born.
Another large-scale experiment provided further insight. Researchers developed a smartphone game, “Sea Hero Quest”, in which players navigate through a virtual environment to locate checkpoints. Based on data from nearly four million players worldwide, they discovered that cultural factors were linked to way-finding skills. People from Nordic countries, where the navigation sport of orienteering is popular, performed slightly better.
Results like these suggest that life experience may be one of the biggest determinants of navigational ability. Indeed, experience may even underlie one of the most consistent findings in navigation: men tend to perform better than women. It turns out that gender gap is more a question of culture and experience than of born ability. Nordic countries, for example, where gender equality is greatest, show almost no gender difference in navigation. In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural restrictions on exploring their environment.
To Uttal, these findings carry an optimistic implication. “The good news is that navigation is trainable,” he notes, “It’s never too late to become a better navigator. You just need to give yourself opportunities to explore and pay attention to your surroundings.”
12. What did the 2020 study on twins reveal about navigational ability?
A. It is largely determined by genes. B. It remains constant in a person’s life.
C. It varies little among individuals. D. It is learned through experience.
13. How was the “Sea Hero Quest” experiment conducted?
A. By testing brain activity during play.
B. By analyzing smartphone game data.
C. By comparing the Nordics with others.
D. By observing how players navigate.
14. Why do men often outperform women in navigation?
A. Men benefit from practicing sports.
B. Women lack interest in doing so.
C. Men possess stronger space memory.
D. Women have fewer chances to explore.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Can “Sea Hero Quest” Teach Us?
B. How Does VR Improve Navigational Skills?
C. Why Do Some People Always Get Lost?
D. Who Are Better Navigators: Men or Women?

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked her parents, promising to walk, feed, and look after it. Each time, though, they gave the same gentle response: “We’ll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home from school, Fauna saw a little dog wandering near the park. Its fur was messy, and it looked lost, sniffing the ground as if searching for something. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called to it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging (摇) its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart swelled with joy. It felt as though this was the pet she had always dreamed of—a friend she had been waiting for.
At the front door, Fauna’s mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog adorable, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly (不情愿地) agreed, though part of her wished no one would come forward to claim the little dog.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog—whom she named Buddy—grew inseparable. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep curled up at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine life without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew deep down that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers around town, hoping to find Buddy’s owner.
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna’s heart sank as her father answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy’s owner. He described Buddy perfectly—the friendly eyes and playful personality. Fauna knew Buddy would soon be leaving her. Her father arranged for the owner to come by and pick Buddy up.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. A

【导语】文章介绍“鸟类鸣叫之父”彼得·马勒(Peter Marler),其通过研究发现鸟类鸣叫存在地区差异且需学习,颠覆本能论,还为人类语言研究提供模型。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“He noticed slight but consistent differences in the songs of birds from different regions, much like human dialects.(他注意到不同地区鸟类的鸣叫声存在细微但始终存在的差异,和人类的方言十分相似)”可知,马勒观察苍头燕雀时发现了鸟类歌声的地区差异。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“He raised young birds in complete vocal isolation from adults. These isolated birds only produced simple, natural calls, proving that the full, complex song was not automatic. However, when he played recordings of adult songs to them during their critical learning period, they successfully learned and sang the complete tune.(他将幼鸟完全与成年鸟隔离开来进行饲养。这些被隔离的鸟只发出简单而自然的鸣叫声,证明了完整的复杂鸣唱并非自动产生。然而,当他在它们关键的学习阶段播放成年鸟的鸣唱录音时,它们成功地学会了并演唱了完整的曲调)”可知,鸟类的复杂歌声是通过学习同类的声音获得的。因此“culturally transmitted”指“在群体中向他人学习并传递”。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In the 1950s, he began carefully recording these songs. Using a crucial tool called a spectrogram, which visually represents sound, he was able to scientifically confirm that these regional variations, or “dialects,” were indeed real.( 20世纪50年代,他开始仔细记录这些鸣唱。借助一种名为频谱图的关键工具——它能以视觉方式呈现声音——他得以科学地证实,这些地区差异,即“方言”,确实存在)”和第四段“Marler, however, quietly continued his careful studies. Gradually, his well-designed methods and undeniable evidence won over the community.(然而,马勒却默默地继续着他的细致研究。渐渐地,他精心设计的方法和无可辩驳的证据赢得了科学界的认可)”可知,马勒是一位耐心且严谨的科学家。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“It provided a powerful, simpler model for scientists studying the incredibly complex evolution of human language, suggesting our own speech may have roots in similar vocal learning processes.(它为研究人类语言极其复杂演化过程的科学家提供了一个强大而简单的模型,表明我们自身的语言可能源于类似的发声学习过程)”可知,马勒的理论意义在于推动了人类语言研究。
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Instead, the biggest contributor to people’s performance was what geneticists call “nonshared environmental factors” — the unique experiences each person accumulates as their life unfolds. Good navigators, it appears, are mostly made, not born.(相反,影响人们表现的最大因素是遗传学家所称的“非共享环境因素”——即每个人在人生历程中积累的独特经验。看来,优秀的导航者大多是后天塑造的,而非天生的。)”可知,2020年的双胞胎研究揭示了导航能力主要是通过后天经验习得的。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Researchers developed a smartphone game, “Sea Hero Quest”, in which players navigate through a virtual environment to locate checkpoints. Based on data from nearly four million players worldwide, they discovered that cultural factors were linked to way-finding skills.(研究人员开发了一款手机游戏“Sea Hero Quest”,在游戏中玩家穿行虚拟环境来定位检查点。基于全球近四百万玩家的数据,他们发现文化因素与寻路能力相关。)”可知,该实验是通过分析智能手机游戏的数据进行的。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural restrictions on exploring their environment.(相比之下,在女性探索环境受到文化限制的地区,男性的导航能力远优于女性。)”
C选项“Why Do Some People Always Get Lost?(为什么有些人总是迷路?)”既紧扣开篇引入,又涵盖了全文对原因的科学探究,适合作标题。

That evening, Fauna sat quietly in her room, feeling the emptiness that Buddy’s absence had left behind.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When the man arrived, the little dog ran straight into his arms, barking with joy. Fauna watched as Buddy wagged his tail furiously, licking the man’s face with excitement. It was clear that Buddy remembered his owner and was overjoyed to see him again. The man thanked Fauna and her family for taking such good care of Buddy. Fauna knelt down to give Buddy one last hug, whispering, “I’ll miss you, Buddy.” As the man led Buddy away, Fauna stood at the door, waving until they were out of sight.
That evening, Fauna sat quietly in her room, feeling the emptiness that Buddy’s absence had left behind. Her parents noticed her sadness and sat down with her. Her father said, “How about visiting the animal shelter this weekend? If you’re ready, maybe we can find a pet that needs a home—one that we can keep forever.” Fauna’s eyes lit up, and a small smile returned to her face. She realized that while saying goodbye to Buddy was hard, it had also opened the door to a new possibility—a chance to give another animal a loving home.
