COMMUNITY READING PROGRAM
Help foster a love of reading among children in our neighborhood! The Community Reading Program brings together volunteers and young readers to create meaningful connections through books. We operate across three local libraries and two elementary schools, serving children aged 5 to 12 from diverse backgrounds.
WHAT WE DO
Volunteers serve as reading buddies, spending one-on-one time with children who need extra support. Each session lasts 45 minutes and includes shared reading, discussion, and fun literacy activities. We also organize monthly book clubs where children can explore stories together and develop critical thinking skills. During school holidays, we run special Reading Adventure events featuring storytelling, arts and crafts, and visits from local authors.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers aged 16 and over are welcome. Those under 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed. No teaching experience is required, but you should feel comfortable reading aloud and engaging with children. A required two-hour orientation (培训) session will be provided before your first visit. All volunteers must pass a standard background check.

Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.
24. Why did the author dislike unexpected visitors when she was young?
A. They interrupted family activities.
B. Her family had to share meals with them.
C. They always asked for more black tea.
D. Her siblings needed to serve them food first.
25. What did the author do after moving to the US?
A. She avoided bothering others.
B. She lived a poor life for a long time.
C. She kept complaining about her mother.
D. She was friendly towards others.
26. Why did the author ask her mother about her kindness?
A. To memorize her childhood. B. To express her gratitude.
C. To understand its origin. D. To change her mother’s mind.
27. How did the author’s attitude to her mother’s kindness change over time?
A. From not understanding it to valuing it.
B. From seeing it as a shame to a road map.
C. From supporting it to complaining about it.
D. From taking it lightly to viewing it as a trouble.

All but two of Austria’s 96 glaciers (冰川) have retreated (缩小) over the last two years, the monitors in the Alpine country reported on Friday, saying the “dramatic development” highlights the impact of climate change. The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club shows the Alpeiner Ferner in the western Tyrol region and Stubacher Sonnblickkees in Salzburg to the east are facing the greatest loss, each with a retreat of more than 100 meters (about 328 feet) . The average retreat was more than 20 meters (about 65 feet) .
“The breakdown of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria’s largest glacier, making the results of climate change visible,” the club said in the report covering 2024 and 2025. It added, “The report confirms once again the long-term trend: The glaciers in Austria continue to retreat significantly in length, area, and volume.” Neighboring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world.
The retreat of the glaciers in Europe has implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more. “The glaciers are melting, and with every new report, the urgency grows,” club vice president Nicole Slupetzky said. “It’s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it’s about relieving the results for ourselves.”
Poor weather conditions such as low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year — nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the average — have contributed to the retreat, the club said. These factors accelerated the melting of ice. Without a shift in weather patterns, the trend will likely worsen.
Such changes in the Alps should serve as a “wake-up call” for policymakers and the public in their behavior, the club said. It added the current figure was lower than the figure during the previous two years, but still ranked as the eighth-largest retreat in the 135 years of measurements.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. All the glaciers in Austria have retreated. B. Glacier retreat is a widespread phenomenon.
C. Pasterze is the largest glacier in Switzerland. D. People fail to know the results of climate change.
29. Which can explain the underlined word “implications” in paragraph 3?
A. Quick solutions. B. Simple designs.
C. Possible effects. D. Full explanations.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The causes of the glacier retreat. B. The change of weather patterns.
C. The threats of climate change. D. The average temperature of Austria.
31. What does the last paragraph stress?
A. The current situation is better. B. The glacier retreat is still serious.
C. Measuring glacier retreat takes time. D. People’s behavior has changed a lot.

For decades, NASA has advanced on board spacecraft computer processors that perform the functions needed to support mission success.
Space computing began in the 1960s during the Apollo missions. At that time, Apollo Guidance Computer played an important role in guidance, navigation, and control. Later, special processors that could work under strong radiation (辐射) became widely used in space exploration.
NASA has successfully used computers on Mars rovers, orbiters, and space telescopes. These processors have worked for years in extreme conditions. However, future space missions will become longer and more complex. As a result, scientists need computers with stronger computing power and greater independence.
In this case, NASA worked with a company to develop a new technology called High Performance Spaceflight Computing. This new system can provide more than 100 times the computing power of older processors. It also combines computing and networking in one device, which helps reduce energy use and system cost.
The new processors include different types for different mission needs. One version is designed for deep space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. It can work safely in difficult environments and support real-time autonomous tasks. Another version provides fault tolerance (容错性) and cybersecurity for low Earth orbit satellites.
Using advanced Ethernet to connect multiple sensors (感应器) or collect several chips, High Performance Spaceflight Computing technology allows spacecraft to process large amounts of data onboard and autonomously make real-time decisions, such as driving rovers at high speeds or sorting scientific images. Continuous system health monitoring and an integrated security controller ensure these complex operations remain safe and reliable.
This technology is not only useful for space missions. Similar processors may also be used in medical equipment, communication services, artificial intelligence, aviation, and energy systems on Earth. By sharing the same technology in space and daily life, the new system may reduce risk and cost for both government and commercial users.
32. Why does NASA need a new generation of space processors?
A. Future missions require more advanced systems.
B. Spacecraft now depends less on computer systems.
C. Scientists hope to take part in more space missions.
D. Older processors cannot work in a difficult environment any more.
33. What can we know about the new processors for different missions?
A. They demand separate networks.
B. They are operated only in deep space.
C. They mainly work for scientific research.
D. They are designed with special functions.
34. What is an advantage of the new computing technology?
A. It replaces sensors on spacecraft.
B. It controls all satellites from Earth.
C. It cuts the number of space missions.
D. It features immediate decisions in space.
35. What does the author want to illustrate about the new technology?
A. It is mainly developed for business use.
B. It may affect both space and daily life.
C. It can solve every problem in space travel.
D. It will definitely reshape space exploration.

Make Your Breaks Count
Students often believe that a break is time stolen from study. In fact, a short purposeful break can refresh your brain and help you return with better focus. ____36____ If you spend the whole break scrolling through short videos, your eyes and mind may stay tired. So, to truly benefit, you need to plan your breaks just as carefully as your study sessions. Let’s explore some practical steps to make every break truly count.
Start by planning the break before you need it. Work for a clear block of time, such as 40 or 50 minutes, and then stop. ____37____ A walk, a glass of water, a few stretches or simply looking out of the window can work well.
____38____ Without a limit, “five minutes” can easily become half an hour. Set a timer and place it where you can hear it. When it rings, go back to the first small task on your list.
Your phone may be the biggest challenge. ____39____ Leave it across the room, or use a paper book, music player or water bottle instead. The point is to make the healthier choice easy.
Finally, treat breaks as part of learning, not as a reward you must feel guilty about. ____40____ You will study with more energy, and your free time will feel freer too.
A. Decide how long the break will last.
B. Not all breaks, however, have the same effect.
C. This helps your brain switch from work to rest.
D. So do something different from sitting at a screen.
E. It can pull you into another long period of attention.
F. In this way, rest supports your plan instead of breaking it.
G. You should take the longest break when homework is hardest.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sarah and her young son Max had just spent a week visiting her husband at his new job site across the country. It was a trip meant to give the little boy some precious face-to-face time with his father, who had only been seen on video calls lately. The visit had been wonderful, filled with park trips and bedtime stories that only happen when a family is together. But now it was over, and she was flying home alone with the five-year-old who didn’t understand why Daddy could not come too.
The morning had started early, with a tearful goodbye at the hotel and a rushed taxi ride to the airport. Security lines had been long; the boarding gate had changed twice. Their first flight had been delayed for over an hour. The mother had used every snack and every song on her phone to stop her son getting bored. By the time they reached Atlanta for their connecting flight, she had nothing left in her bag of tricks and hardly anything left in herself. Her back ached from carrying their luggage (行李) and her heart was heavy from the goodbye she had just gone through.
Later, they found a restaurant near the entrance, and she hoped that a familiar meal might buy them an hour of peace before boarding the final journey home. But the restaurant was loud and crowded, and her son had reached his limit. He moved around in his seat, knocked over his water, and started making noises. The mother tried everything to calm him down — a gentle hand on his shoulder, a whispered promise of ice cream — but nothing worked. She could feel the eyes of other diners beginning to turn their way, and she felt the familiar heat of embarrassment rising in her cheeks, mixed with the guilt that she could not fix this for him. That’s when a waitress named Brittany Bell walked over.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She approached Sarah with a warm smile and softly asked if she could try.

M: I know, but it definitely feels like I’m the only one.
W: Why don’t you pull in to that ice cream shop right there? Let’s get something good to eat to take your mind off it.
M: Good idea!

【原文】M: Hello everyone. I’m very happy to be invited to this programme today. I’d like to share with you my impression of Paris. Actually, there’s something interesting to see in every corner of Paris. The weather’s been great too. Some aspects of life here are different from those in the US. The most obvious thing is that there are much more activities in the streets. People gather together in open markets, cafes, parks and squares. Then, of course, there’s the food. It’s beautifully shown in windows and at markets. Everything is fresh. I’ve gained five pounds since I arrived. There are a few things that bother me, though I’m still having a hard time with the language. People speak very fast and it’s hard to get them to repeat things. People, I think, are less warm here and it’s hard to make friends. I guess that can be true for us, strangers in any big city, in a new country.

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

C

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
She approached Sarah with a warm smile and softly asked if she could try. Instead of scolding the upset child, Brittany pulled out a colorful crayon and a blank napkin from her pocket. She sat down across from Max, leaned in gently, and asked him to tell her all about the fun week he’d just had with his daddy. Max immediately stopped making noises, his little eyes lighting up as he started chattering about the trips and the dinosaur toy his dad bought. Brittany listened carefully, nodding and asking questions now and then, while drawing a little dinosaur on the napkin for him.
Seeing her son calm down, Sarah was deeply moved. She thanked Brittany repeatedly, saying she’d had an exhausting day and had nowhere else to turn. She tried to offer an extra tip, but Brittany refused. Brittany told Sarah she’d been through the same thing as a young single mom, and that a little kindness can make a big difference. When Sarah paid for the meal, she found Brittany had secretly added a free ice cream for Max. Sarah left the restaurant with a calmed, happy child and a warm heart, carrying the unexpected kindness from a stranger with her all the way home.
