Their friendship and sense of achievement are obvious. Encouraged by such refreshing and positive experiences, community groups and volunteers have started designing “blue care” programmes to connect people with water. Some doctors even strongly recommend “bluespace” activities.   Encouraged by the health benefits of open-water swimming, my team and I did the largest-ever survey of open-water swimmers. Our study, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, shows that wild swimming improves mental (心理的) health by satisfying mental needs like the sense of freedom and control in the water.   As part of the Blue Health project, we surveyed around 20,000 adults in 19 countries about their interaction (相互作用) with blue spaces and their fitness. Among them, 1,200 reported swimming in blue spaces, including open-air pools, lakes, rivers and the sea. Wild swimming has more important benefits.   Surprisingly though, the social connection did not play as big a role in these effects on mental health as we had expected, even though the number of community swimming groups like the Perranporth Bluetits is increasing. At least in this international group, personal achievements seemed to be more influential than the community connection. However, more skilled swimmers, who often choose adventurous places, sometimes reported higher anxiety levels. This suggests that wild swimming can be good but also challenging.   These findings add to earlier research on open-water swimming. They show that this activity is good for the physical and mental health of adults from different countries, explain how these benefits happen, and point out the discrepancy between natural water and man-made outdoor pools. So, should we all be jumping in and recommending such experiences for better mental health?   The research does not quite support that yet. We need to be realistic about some of the other challenges we face, such as drowning (溺水) risks and polluted water. Still, our results support research recommending getting close to nature to improve the health condition.
