Kurt Wenner, a former NASA illustrator (绘图员) turned professional artist, specializes in chalk-drawn three-dimensional illusions that seem carved into the pavement rather than drawn on it.
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Kurt Wenner attended both the Rhode Island School of Design and ArtCenter in Pasadena and was quickly recruited to work for NASA while studying at the school. There, he was among the few highly skilled artists whose work was done merely by hand. Eventually, Kurt left the agency and moved to Europe to study some of the world’s greatest works of art. Disappointed to find no class on the principles of classicism, the young artist came up with his own self-learning program which involved spending countless hours drawing from the magnificent art collection of the Vatican Museums and the Pantheon.
Every morning, Kurt would draw some of the world’s most famous works of art and sell them to tourists in order to support himself. It was during this period that he discovered the world of pavement illusions. One day, on his way to the Vatican to see the paintings that had become his inspiration, Kurt passed by artists creating images with chalk on the pavement. After being invited to try his hand at it, he spent only a few months developing a new art form known as 3D pavement art.
Inspired by a wide range of subjects, Kurt Wenner creates sophisticated pavement artworks that, admired from just the right angle, have an impressive depth that makes them look sculpted into the pavement. The American artist is generally regarded as the inventor of 3D pavement art and his works have fascinated audiences in over 30 countries around the world.
“In photographs of my 3D images, the art can appear as ‘real’ as the audience. Although I employ many visual tools to create illusion, the classical language of form is the most vital. Classicism is vastly superior to other forms of realism for the creation of illusion as it is based on human perception. Every stroke has the purpose of communicating form and space to the viewers. My perspective technique enables me to bring classicism into the present by creating a visual and geometrical link between a work of art and its contemporary surroundings,” said Kurt Wenner.
4. What made Kurt Wenner create his own self-learning program?
A. His major in college.
B. His work experience in NASA.
C. The visit to the Vatican Museums.
D. The lack of classes on the principles of classicism.
5. How did Kurt Wenner make a living in Europe at first?
A. By teaching art classes. B. By selling his artworks.
C. By working in a local museum. D. By creating pavement illusions.
6. What is special about Kurt Wenner’s 3D pavement artworks?
A. They primarily show American culture.
B. They are created based on famous artworks.
C. They bring a “real” visual space to viewers.
D. They combine digital and ancient elements.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The development of classicism in modern art
B. Kurt Wenner: A NASA illustrator
C. The origin and growth of 3D pavement art
D. Kurt Wenner: Pioneer of 3D pavement illusions
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. D

In the age of instant messaging and 24/7 online connectivity, many young people find themselves trapped in a strange phenomenon known as “social jet lag”. Unlike the physical jet lag caused by long-distance travel, this refers to the mental fatigue and emotional imbalance resulting from the constant switching between multiple online identities and the pressure to respond instantly. A recent survey by the University of Edinburgh found that over 60% of teenagers check their social media within five minutes of waking up, and nearly half admit they feel anxious if they do not reply to a message immediately.
Dr. Emily Watson, a psychologist specializing in digital behavior, explains that the human brain is not designed to process continuous social signals. “We evolved to interact with a small group of people face-to-face, not to manage hundreds of virtual relationships simultaneously,” she says. “Each notification triggers a small stress response, and when these accumulate throughout the day, they exhaust our cognitive resources.” Her research team monitored the heart rates and brain activities of 200 volunteers over a month and found that those who limited their social media use to three specific periods per day reported significantly lower stress levels and better sleep quality.
However, not all experts agree that digital interaction is harmful. Professor Mark Chen argues that for introverted individuals, online platforms offer a less intimidating way to express themselves, which can actually reduce social anxiety. He points out that the problem lies not in the technology itself, but in the lack of self-regulation. “We cannot blame smartphones for our inability to set boundaries,” he says. “The key is to cultivate mindful usage, not to abandon connectivity altogether.”
The debate reflects a broader cultural conflict between the desire for constant availability and the need for mental peace. Schools in Finland have started incorporating “digital detox” sessions into their curriculum, teaching students to schedule offline hours. Whether such measures will become widespread remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the younger generation is awakening to the hidden cost of being always online.
8. What is “social jet lag” mainly about?
A. A physical disorder caused by time zone changes.
B. A fear of missing out on social events.
C. A sleep problem due to late-night messaging.
D. A mental strain from managing multiple online roles.
9. What did Dr. Watson’s experiment reveal?
A. More online time leads to higher heart rates.
B. Limiting social media use improves well-being.
C. Brain activities are unaffected by notifications.
D. Face-to-face interaction is less efficient.
10. What is Professor Chen’s attitude towards online platforms?
A. Strongly critical. B. Cautiously optimistic.
C. Completely neutral. D. Highly skeptical.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Rise of Digital Detox in Schools
B. Social Media: A Blessing or a Curse?

Have you ever caught a whiff of a familiar perfume and suddenly been transported back to a childhood memory? This powerful link between smell and recollection has long fascinated scientists. Now, a groundbreaking study from the Weizmann Institute of Science provides the first neural evidence that odors are uniquely effective in triggering not just episodic memories (events) but also the emotional intensity attached to them.
The research team, led by Dr. Yara Cohen, used functional MRI to scan the brains of 150 participants while they were exposed to a set of 30 distinct odors, such as coffee, mint, or rose. Compared with visual or auditory cues, the olfactory stimuli (嗅觉刺激) activated the hippocampus (海马体) and the amygdala (杏仁核) much more strongly and simultaneously. The hippocampus is responsible for encoding contextual details, while the amygdala processes emotions. The researchers observed that when an odor was presented, the two regions fired in near-perfect synchrony, a phenomenon rarely seen with other senses.
To confirm the behavioral impact, the team conducted a second experiment. They asked participants to recall personal memories associated with each odor and rate the vividness and emotional charge on a scale. The results showed that odor-triggered memories were not only more detailed but also rated 30% higher in emotional intensity than memories evoked by photographs or sounds. Moreover, the memories tended to be from early childhood, suggesting that olfactory pathways are particularly resilient to aging.
Dr. Cohen explains the evolutionary basis: “In ancient environments, smell was critical for detecting danger, food, and mates. The brain accordingly prioritized olfactory processing by wiring it directly to the limbic system, bypassing the thalamus (丘脑) which filters other sensory inputs. This direct route makes smell the most primal and emotionally potent sense.”
These findings have practical implications beyond neuroscience. Some hospitals are now using familiar scents to help dementia (痴呆) patients retrieve positive memories, reducing agitation. Meanwhile, advertisers are rethinking how to incorporate ambient fragrance to build stronger brand loyalty. However, Dr. Cohen warns that the power of smell is a double-edged sword: traumatic memories can also be painfully revived, so therapeutic applications must be handled with care.
12. What is the main discovery of the Weizmann Institute study?
A. Odors are better at evoking emotional memories than other senses.
B. The hippocampus is not involved in processing smells.
C. Visual cues trigger stronger amygdala responses.
D. Olfactory memories weaken faster with age.
13. How did the researchers measure brain activity in the first experiment?
A. By observing behavioral responses. B. By interviewing participants about their memories.
C. By recording heart rate changes. D. By scanning brain images with MRI.
14. Why does Dr. Cohen consider smell the “most primal” sense?
A. It develops earlier than vision in childhood.
B. It was the only sense used by ancient humans.
C. It connects directly to emotional brain areas without a filter.
D. It produces the strongest physical reactions.
15. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning hospitals and advertisers?
A. To prove that smell research is financially valuable.
B. To illustrate the real-world applications of the study.
C. To criticize the overuse of scents in public places.
D. To suggest that more experiments are needed.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B
【解析】

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The brain accordingly prioritized olfactory processing by wiring it directly to the limbic system, bypassing the thalamus (丘脑) which filters other sensory inputs. This direct route makes smell the most primal and emotionally potent sense.(大脑因此将嗅觉处理优先级提升,通过直接连接到边缘系统,绕过了过滤其他感官输入的丘脑。这种直接路径使嗅觉成为最原始且最具情感强度的感觉)”可知,科恩博士认为嗅觉是最“原始”的感官是因为嗅觉直接连接到大脑的情感区域,无需过滤。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“These findings have practical implications beyond neuroscience. Some hospitals are now using familiar scents to help dementia (痴呆) patients retrieve positive memories, reducing agitation. Meanwhile, advertisers are rethinking how to incorporate ambient fragrance to build stronger brand loyalty.(这些发现除了神经科学领域外,还有实际应用价值。现在一些医院利用熟悉的气味帮助痴呆患者唤起积极记忆,减少焦躁情绪。与此同时,广告商也在重新思考如何利用环境香气来建立更强的品牌忠诚度)”可知,作者提到医院和广告商的目的是说明该研究在现实中的应用。

第二节
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. “The same to you,” she added, her voice soft. “Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion.” Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. “I want to be the beautiful princess but now I was chosen as a narrator.” She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly.
Paragraph 2:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role back stage like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. The performance that night was eventually a big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.

Faculty Teaching Workshop Announcement
There is an upcoming faculty teaching workshop opportunity this summer, Monday, August 5. The workshop, which will be a half-day event, is co-sponsored by Academic Affairs and the Center for Collaborative Learning. It will focus on employing effective and creative tools in the classroom, with a particular emphasis on collaborative learning.
Dr Brad Garner, PhD, the Director of Faculty Enrichment at Indiana Wesleyan University, will be serving as our facilitator. I had the pleasure of attending Dr Garner’s session at a National Conference on the First Year Experience this semester, which was entitled Teachapalooza: A Festival of Bedazzling Strategies, Tools and Tactics. It was both inspiring and practical, perfect for relatively new faculty, as well as for more experienced faculty, in learning about a variety of the most effective teaching strategies that can be employed in the classroom.
All faculty are invited to attend the workshop, particularly applicable given our cross-campus focus on collaborative learning. Dr Garner’s brief bio is included below.

C
