March 25 every year provides you with a good chance to learn about safety. This day is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (NDESEMSS). It aims to provide students with more safety knowledge. A survey showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The accidents usually come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries. What can we do to keep ourselves safe? I think staying calm is the most important when facing accidents. But different accidents have different self-protection advice. A stampede is possible anywhere. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Move to one side, and bend your body and legs. Earthquakes are common natural disasters . When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines. In case of fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly. Cover your mouth and nose with a piece of wet cloth and crawl low under the smoke to breathe fresh air. Safety is everything. Let’s take it seriously and grow up healthily and safely. 51. D Street lights are all around us, but we often forget how much we need them until the power goes out. When that happens, everything gets dark and the world turns into a dangerous place for people and cars. A long time ago, around 500 BC, the Chinese used bamboo pipes (竹管) and natural gas to create burning torches (火把) to light up the streets. Later, ancient Romans used lights that burned vegetable oil. The first public street lighting began in 1417, when the leader of London gave the order to hang lanterns outside homes during the winter months. This marked the beginning of organized public street lighting, which made a big difference to cities across the world. Fast-forward four centuries to the 1800s, when Baltimore became the first American city to put gas street lights on poles (杆子). This was a big step forward from the old ways of lighting up cities. In 1878, Paris began using the first electric street lights: arc lamps (弧光灯). However, the light from arc lamps was too bright and strong for people’s eyes, so these lamps didn’t stay in use for long. In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb (白炽灯泡). It offered a softer and nicer light and became the new standard. It quickly took the place of the arc lamp. However, street lighting didn’t stop there. From the 1960s to the early 21st century, sodium lamps (钠灯) were very common. More recently, LED street lights have taken over because they use less energy and last longer. As technology continues to develop, even better street lights may provide a brighter future for everyone at night. 61. What materials did the ancient Chinese use for the burning torches? A. Natural gas and electricity. B. Electricity and vegetable oil C. Bamboo pipes and natural gas. D. Vegetable oil and bamboo pipes. 62. What happened in 1417? A. The first arc lamps were used in Rome. How can you protect yourself when you are caught in a stampede (踩踏)? 51. When is NDESEMSS? A. On March 5th. B. On March 15th. C. On March 25th. D. On May 25th. 52.
