That friendly voice from your phone guiding you to new places is closely connected with Gladys West. Modern navigation (导航) has its roots in the satellite science lab where West studied the Earth’s shape. As a determined Black woman, she earned full scholarships to complete her math degrees at Virginia State University.
Electronics in guidance systems were in their early stage in 1955, when West began her career. She had grown up on the family farm, and though she was self-motivated to study, she was a rarity in mathematics, not only as a woman but as a Black mathematician. Not discouraged, she put her mind to solving problems.
She began by analyzing the Earth orbits of satellites. It might seem simple to calculate the distance around a perfect ball, but the shape of the Earth is not perfect. It is egg-shaped and has geographical as well as gravitational variations due to the tidal (潮汐的) forces that affect the course of a satellite. West developed algorithms (算法) to account for the variations and, through the 1970s and 1980s, programmed an IBM computer to deliver ever-increasingly accurate calculations for the shape of the Earth.
West seldom protested the unfairness around her, for she could not afford to lose her job. Instead, she kept working to improve travel navigation. Her life and work not only give us daily directions but also inspire young people to rise above difficult situations.
“I’m a doer, a hands-on kind of person,” West once said. “If I can see the road and see where it turns and see where it goes, I am more sure.”
For all of us, we are grateful to West for making that map a little easier to follow. The next time you arrive on time, having avoided construction and delays, and hear that friendly voice say, “You have arrived,” give a nod and respond, “Thank you, West. I have arrived at a better place because of you.”
24.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Gladys West?
A.She was courageous. B.She was born poor.
C.She had many talents. D.She taught herself.
25.What belief did West hold?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Actions speak louder.
C.Well begun is half done. D.Lost time is never found.
26.Which word can best describe West’s contribution in paragraph 6?
A.Record-breaking. B.Time-consuming.
C.Life-improving. D.Energy-wasting.
27.What is West’s main achievement?
A.She explores the space stars.
B.She helps us find our way.
C.She fights for women’s rights.
D.She uncovers the gravity of the Earth.
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 27.B
根据第二段中“Electronics in guidance systems were in their early stage in 1955, when West began her career. There are some sounds most of us acknowledge are annoying — the crunching of crisps, the noise of an air conditioner or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract us from the task at hand. However, there are some among us who have a much more severe response to these noises. The question we ask today is: Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage? If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia.
The word “misophonia” literally means “a hatred of sound” and is sometimes called selective sound sensitivity syndrome. There are some experts who doubt the existence of the condition. However, for those who claim to suffer from it, the experience can be traumatic. Certain sounds cause intense emotional or psychological responses that may seem over the top compared to a non-sufferer’s complaints.
The sound of a loved one chewing their food could trigger a sufferer’s anxiety levels, or cause them to panic. It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to flee. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in extreme anger and end up with sufferers going crazy. As a result, these conditions can lead to social isolation, and sufferers may feel cut off, according to James Cartreine, a clinical psychiatrist.
Sadly, there’s no known cure. However, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, which helps people tolerate noises, may aid sufferers, while cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling could also help people manage the condition. Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like hitting someone due to their breathing.
So, the next time you see someone fly into a rage because of a sound that is driving them crazy, it may be due to a difficult condition they are trying to manage, and not just because they hate a certain sound.
28.What can annoying sounds do to non-sufferers of misophonia?
A.They lead to some complaints and an explosion of anger.
B.They generate intense emotional responses among them.
C.They make them doubt the presence of misophonia.
D.They draw their attention away from what they’re doing.
29.What does the underlined word “traumatic” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Physically painful. B.Spiritually comforting.
C.Emotionally disturbing. D.Mentally satisfying.
30.What can we learn about misophonia sufferers?
A.They may use practical ways to handle it.
B.They won’t be treated through medical treatments.
C.They may be angered by the feeling of being cut off.
D.They can fully cure their misophonia with therapy.
31.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A news report. B.A science-fiction story.
C.A health magazine. D.A psychologist’s notebook.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中“These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract us from the task at hand.(对许多人来说,这些噪音仅仅是一种不方便,会分散我们对手头工作的注意力)”可知,对于非恐音症患者来说,恼人的声音会分散他们对正在做的事情的注意力。
根据画线词上文“However, for those who claim to suffer from it (然而,对于那些声称遭受痛苦的人)”和下文“Certain sounds cause intense emotional or psychological responses that may seem over the top compared to a non-sufferer’s complaints.(某些声音会引起强烈的情绪或心理反应,与非患者的抱怨相比,这些声音似乎有些过头了)”可知,对恐音症患者而言,这种经历会引起他们强烈的负面情绪或心理反应。
根据第四段中“Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like hitting someone due to their breathing.(患者会采用一些应对策略,包括避开嘈杂的地方,如餐厅,或者在因为呼吸问题而想要攻击他人时选择离开。)”

In space, astronauts have to learn to live without gravity — whether they’re aboard the International Space Station (ISS) or on a journey to the moon. While space adventurers do experience microgravity conditions beyond Earth, that gravitational influence is so minimal that you can think of it as a virtually weightless environment. But while floating around might sound fun, even simple tasks like holding an object can pose unique challenges. So, scientists have wondered, how does the brain adapt to this kind of lifestyle?
In a new study, researchers from the Université catholique de Louvain and Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science, explored how astronauts’ brains adapt to weightlessness. The team studied changes in how astronauts grip objects when going from Earth to space and then back to Earth again.
The results were a little stranger than you might expect, and could have serious consequences for future astronaut safety. “What we observed was totally unexpected,” lead author Philippe Lefèvre, a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Université catholique de Louvain, told Space.com.
The researchers found that months after returning to Earth from space, astronauts had trouble exerting the correct amount of force to properly grip an object. In fact, their brains were so used to gripping weightless objects in space that it took them months back on Earth to readjust. Similarly, the team also found that, while in space, astronauts actually applied more force than necessary to grip objects because their brains still expected the presence of gravity.
Essentially, both during a mission in space and after returning to Earth, astronauts “misinterpret sensory feedback,” Lefèvre said. Living on Earth with the force of gravity, we know that if we let go of an object, both inertia (惯性) and the weight of the object (a combination of mass and gravity) will cause it to fall. In space, only inertia causes objects to move. For instance, simply letting go of an object won’t make it fall, but tapping down on it would have the same visual effect because you’ve added a manual force, but while we might know this intellectually, it turns out that it takes some time for our brains to catch up to our gravity (or gravity-less surroundings).
32.What situation do space travelers experience in the universe?
A.They are faced with the completely gravity-free space.
B.The microgravity conditions beyond Earth are minimal.
C.They had difficulty using the proper amount of force.
D.They are floating in an unreal weightless environment.
33.Why did astronauts in space apply more force than necessary to grip objects?
A.Because objects in space become heavier due to microgravity.
B.Because their brains still expected gravity to be present.
C.Because they were not familiar with the effect of inertia.
D.Because sensory feedback was amplified in space.
34.What aspect is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A.Cause and effect B.Comparison and contrast
C.Example and citing D.Highlight and focus
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Astronauts Learn to Hold Objects in a Weightless Environment
B.Astronauts Face Grip Strength Challenge in Space and on Earth
C.Why Astronauts Use Wrong Grip Force in Space and on Earth
D.The Physics of Inertia and Gravity in Space Confuses Astronauts
根据原文第一段“While space adventurers do experience microgravity conditions beyond Earth, that gravitational influence is so minimal that you can think of it as a virtually weightless environment.(太空旅行者在地球之外确实处于微重力环境,这种引力影响极小,可以看作近乎失重状态。)”
根据原文第四段“Similarly, the team also found that, while in space, astronauts actually applied more force than necessary to grip objects because their brains still expected the presence of gravity.(研究团队还发现,宇航员在太空中抓握物品时会用多余的力气,因为他们的大脑仍默认重力依然存在。)”
根据原文最后一段“Living on Earth with the force of gravity, we know that if we let go of an object, both inertia and the weight of the object (a combination of mass and gravity) will cause it to fall. In space, only inertia causes objects to move.(在地球上受重力作用,我们都知道:如果松开一个物体,惯性以及物体自身的重量(质量与重力共同作用的结果)会让它下落。而在太空中,只有惯性会使物体发生运动。)” 可知,本段把地球有重力和太空无重力两种情况进行对比对照。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“But while floating around might sound fun, even simple tasks like holding an object can pose unique challenges.(虽然四处漂浮听起来很有趣,但哪怕是抓握物品这类简单的任务,也会带来独特的挑战。)”及第二段“The team studied changes in how astronauts grip objects when going from Earth to space and then back to Earth again.(研究团队研究了宇航员从地球进入太空、再重返地球的过程中,抓握物体方式所发生的变化。)”
Gag gifts are usually inexpensive novelty items intended to get a laugh. They’re often casual buys when something funny instantly brings a friend or family member to mind. Most gag gifts are not very useful. 36 You don’t need a special event to give someone a gag gift.
37 The faces of politicians are often found on gag gifts, along with political jokes. Other common designs include cartoon characters, famous funny sayings, and slightly rude jokes. Children often like gag gifts that double as tricks. Some classic examples are an innocent-looking pillow and whoopee cushion. These items have all brought laughs for generations.
When to give gag gifts? They can be given when a gift is expected but the recipient is only a nodding acquaintance For example, at an office party for an employee who is leaving, people may be expected to bring a small present even if they don’t know the person well. In this case, a coffee cup with a funny saying works well. 38 This adds joy to an otherwise ordinary drinking cup.
When giving a gag gift, the giver should make sure the gag will not hurt the recipient’s feelings. 39 However, gags highlighting a person’s shortcomings are not a good idea. They may make the person feel uncomfortable. For example, a baldhead cap would be unkind for someone worried about losing his hair; but it could be funny for someone with very thick hair who often complains about it. Gifts given on a serious or public occasion should not be overly rude. 40
A.Being useful is often expected.
B.But that is not their main purpose.
C.Otherwise the recipient may feel offended.
D.In this way, the gift appears to be more valuable.
E.Gag gifts can be almost anything that is meant for fun.
F.Gags related to someone’s special talents are often a big hit.
G.When the gift is opened, it may bring a laugh from the crowd.

The significance of the renewables revolution in China is almost too vast for the human mind to grasp. By the end of last year, the country 56 (reach) 887 gigawatts of solar-power capacity — close to double Europe’s and America’s combined total. Thanks to this capacity, China has exceeded, 57 is on course to exceed, most of the commitments it has made under the Paris Agreement since it signed it ten years ago.
More 58 (important), China is exporting its revolution to the rest of the world. America’s current government rejects renewable 59 (technology). In Europe, voters oppose expensive green policies. So it is in developing countries that the fight against climate change will be won or lost, and it is there that China’s renewables will make the most difference by providing ever greater amounts of clean-energy capacity at prices 60 are lower than any alternative, including coal and natural gas. If you doubt 61 appeal, count those solar panels on Pakistani roofs.
And the benefits could be enormous. Although the 62 (possible) of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions so dramatically as to limit the increase in global temperatures to just 1.5°C is likely to fail, solar and wind offer the best hope of 63 (limit) further rises. And even if climate change is not the priority, we should be excited at the prospect of cheap, clean energy and its promise 64 (improve) billions of lives in developing countries. In short, the world needs 65 China has to offer. And it should take it.
56.had reached 57.or 58.importantly 59.technologies 60.which/that 61.the 62.possibility 63.limiting 64.to improve 65.what
By the end of last year为过去完成时标志,强调过去某一时间前已完成的动作,所以用过去完成时,谓语动词为had reached。
固定搭配the promise to do sth.,意为“做某事的希望、愿景”,用动词不定式to improve作后置定语。

Nowadays, museums are faced with a dilemma.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Nowadays, museums are faced with a dilemma. Many precious masterpieces are easily damaged, so museums have to limit their display. However, the public is eager to have more chances to appreciate these amazing works of art.
To solve the problem, effective ways are needed. First, museums can make full use of digital technology to provide online exhibitions and virtual tours, letting people appreciate art safely. Besides, museums can show the original pieces periodically under strict conditions.
In my opinion, by combining digital sharing and careful display, we can not only better protect these valuable treasures but also make them more accessible to the public.

One winter day, the temperature suddenly dropped sharply, with icy winds howling outside and heavy snow blanketing the farm. It wasn’t until late that afternoon that we remembered our two ducks, a male and a female, were still at our poorly-built small farm. “Could they have frozen to death?” we wondered anxiously.
My mother and I hurried through the snow to the farm and, to our relief, found them still alive. Their bodies were covered with snow, and they were too cold even to quack (叫). Huddling closely together for warmth, they looked weak and exhausted. We quickly wrapped them in an old blanket and carried them home.
Back home, we took the ducks down to the basement and settled them in a warm corner with food, water and some old towels. In the dim light, shadows fell across old tools, ropes, broken baskets, fishing nets and other unused farm supplies that had been left there for years. The ducks soon rested quietly side by side.
We decided to leave the ducks alone so they could recover peacefully. Since they already had enough food and water, we didn’t go downstairs again for the rest of the day.
Everything seemed peaceful until that evening, when we were reading by the fire in the living room and a strange sound suddenly came from downstairs. It was a dull thumping noise, followed by a long pause. A few moments later, the sound returned, slow but urgent.
“Could that be the ducks?” my mother asked. Curious and slightly worried, we got up and went to check. It was indeed one of the ducks. Much to our surprise, the duck brother had climbed nearly to the top of the basement stairs. Struggling to stay upright, he flapped his wings wildly. Then, gathering all his remaining strength, he finally pulled himself onto the highest step and fixed his eyes on us.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Seeing us, he let out a few panicked quacks and shot a look back downstairs.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Only then did we understand why he had struggled so desperately to climb up.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: When he saw us, he let out several anxious quacks and glanced back toward the basement. Without waiting for us, he immediately turned around and struggled back down the stairs. Confused by his unusual behavior, we hurried after him. In the dim basement, the duck brother rushed toward the corner where the ducks had been resting, flapping his wings wildly and quacking over and over again. A weak rustling sound soon caught our attention. Through the shadows and scattered supplies, we could barely make out another duck struggling helplessly among the ropes and fishing nets.
Paragraph 2: We finally understood why the duck had tried so hard to climb upstairs. I quickly rushed to the kitchen for a pair of scissors while my mother gently tried to calm the trapped duck. Back in the basement, I knelt beside her and carefully cut through the tangled net strand by strand. After several tense moments, the final piece finally fell away. Freed at last, the duck sister weakly moved toward her brother, and the duck brother immediately quieted down and stayed close beside her. Watching the two ducks lean against each other once again in the warm basement, I felt a lump rise in my throat. That night, I realized animals may not speak our language, but they understand love, trust and family far more deeply than we often imagine.

In life, how you think about stress matters because it changes how you respond to stress. “Stress isn’t always 41 ,” said Kelly McGonigal, a Stanford expert. “Once you appreciate that going through stress makes you 42 at it, it can be easier to face new 43 .” One study found that simply having the goal to avoid stress increased the long-term risk of outcomes like depression. 44 , viewing stress more positively seems to encourage people to cope in ways that help them 45 , whether it’s tackling the source of stress, 46 social support or finding meaning in it.
