Long long ago, a man from the State of Chu took a boat across the river. He carried a new sharp sword(剑) with him. When the boat reached the middle of the river, his sword fell into the water by accident. People on the boat shouted, “Hurry! Your sword fell in the water!”
But the man did not jump into the river. He took a small knife and cut a mark(标记) on the side of the boat. “My sword fell right at this place,” he said. When the boat stopped at the river bank, he jumped into the water near the mark to look for his sword. Of course he found nothing: the boat moved all the way, but the sword stayed at the same place in the river.

Long long ago, 90-year-old Yu Gong lived in a small village. Two tall mountains stood in front of the village, so people had to walk dozens of miles to get out. Yu Gong decided to move the two mountains away with his family. They dug stones and earth every day, and carried the waste to the sea. A 7-year-old neighbor boy also came to help them.
An old man named Zhi Sou laughed at Yu Gong: “You are too old to move even a small part of the mountains.” Yu Gong smiled and answered, “When I die, my children will keep working. When my children die, their grandchildren will go on. The mountains never grow taller, so we can move them one day.”
The Heaven God(天神) heard Yu Gong’s words and was moved by his strong will. He sent two gods to carry the mountains away.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It comes on the fifth day of the fifth lunar(农历的) month, to remember Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet(爱国诗人) in ancient China. Qu Yuan loved his country deeply. When his country was in danger, he jumped into the Miluo River.
People near the river rowed boats to look for him, and threw rice balls into the river to stop fish from eating his body. Later, people called the rice balls “zongzi”, and the boat activity became dragon boat races. Today, people eat zongzi and watch dragon boat races every year in memory of Qu Yuan.

Cao Chong was the son of Cao Cao, a famous leader in ancient China. When he was 6 years old, someone sent his father a big elephant. Cao Cao wanted to know how heavy the elephant was, but there was no scale(秤) big enough to weigh such a huge animal. All the clever adults in the palace could not think of a solution.
Little Cao Chong said, “I have an idea!” First, he asked people to lead the elephant onto a big boat. The boat sank a little under the elephant’s weight, and Cao Chong drew a line on the boat to mark the water level. Then he had people lead the elephant off the boat, and put heavy stones onto the boat until the water reached the same line. Finally, he asked people to weigh each stone and add up the numbers — that was exactly the elephant’s weight.

Shadow puppetry(皮影戏) is a world-famous traditional Chinese art with a history of over 2000 years. Do you know how the first shadow puppet show was created?
It is said that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty loved his favorite consort(妃子) Li Furen very much. After Li died, the emperor was so sad that he did not want to deal with national affairs. A smart official named Li Shaoweng got an idea when he saw children playing with cloth dolls: the dolls’ shadows on the ground looked very real. The emperor sat on the other side of the screen and saw the shadow that looked just like Li, and he became happy again. That was the first shadow puppet show in China.
