(2025·八省联考)Want to learn a new lan
guage or get A's in college exams?Previous stud-
ies have shown that exercise can help stimulate
the areas of the brain that convert(转换)new in
formation into long-term memory.A new study
has taken this information one step further and
found the best time when exercise can help maxi-
mize learning.
Building upon past research that found exer-
cise releases biochemicals that improve mental
function,scientists at Radboud University and
the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to
determine when exercise was most beneficial to
learning.
Participants-72 healthy male and female
adults-were first asked to perform a computer
test that challenged their visual and spatial learn-
ing. After the test, all of the subjects watched
nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them al-
so exercised.Half of the exercisers did circuit
training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes imme-
diately after the test. The other half did the same
exercise but not until four hours after they had
been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants re-
turned to the lab for a recall test, and they were
connected to MRI(磁共振成像)machines to as-
sess their brain activity. The participants who ex-
ercised four hours after taking the computer test
were able to recall what they had learned most ac-
curately.Their brainwaves also showed more
consistent levels of activity, indicating that their
brains were less taxed to remember what they had
learned.
According to this research, the best time to
exercise to improve learning is four hours after
studying. But why? That's one question the re-
searchers have yet to answer.Another question
left unanswered is the level of exercise that might
best improve learning.I've run enough mara-
thons to prove the fact that my brain is anything

but sharp during or after a tough workout. But
the researchers noted that light workouts might
not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost
to improve learning.
1.What did the new study aim to explore?
A.When exercise is best for learning.
B.What biochemicals are good for health.
C.How brainwaves should be measured.
D.Which area of the brain is the most active.
2.What were all the participants asked to do dur-
ing the experiment?
A.Train on bicycles.
B.Do mathematics exercises.
C.Play computer games.
D.Watch films about nature.
3.Why did the participants return to the lab two
days later?
A.To do a medical examination.
B.To have their memory tested.
C.To get their workouts recorded.
D.To finish their previous tasks.
4.What might the author's marathon running
prove?
A.The findings of the study are reliable.
B.Long-distance runners are often smart.
C.Studies on the marathon are not enough.
D.Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.

When she was 61,Sian Davies decided to
row across the Atlantic Ocean. In March 2021,
she was one of the 12 crew members who set out
on the 3,000-mile journey from Tenerife to battle
sun, salt and fierce currents."We would row in
three-hour shifts and only sleep for an hour or so
every six hours,”she says.“For the first 15
days,I was seasick,so I hardly ate anything.I
was just rowing and collapsing.I went through
some pretty dark times.
But after 42 days on the water,Davies
reached Antigua to become one of the only six
women in the world over the age of 60 to have
rowed across an ocean."I was exhausted and I
was also so proud of myself, she says.
Davies began rowing when she was 53,after
spotting a six-oar (rowing boat in Bristol har-
bor.Attracted by its size and appearance, she
spoke to the crew and was encouraged to do a tri-
al run."As soon as I got on the water,I fell in
love with it,”she says..“Feeling your whole
body working and the fresh air on your skin
is amazing.”
It wasn't until 2017,though,that her Atlan-
tic plans were born.Suffering from a herniated
disc(椎间盘突出),she was only able to crawl
out of bed."I began thinking of things I could
look forward to after I had surgery,"she says.
"One day I was reading about women adventurers
when it hit me that once better,I would row
across an ocean..”

After successful surgery,Davies began driv-
ing to meet other women who had undertaken
rows.Hearing the experiences and advice of them
gave Davies the confidence.Soon after, she heard
that a new boat producer was organizing a team
for a voyage across the Atlantic and she joined it
immediately.
"In June,I'm planning to break a few world
records by rowing around the UK when I'm 64,
and I want to motorcycle through the Himalayas
later in the year. After all,we need things to look
back on,”she says.

(2024·安徽高三模拟)I used to be very ac-
tive in sports and games when I was in primary
school.I won the B Division long jump and was a
good sprinter(短跑运动员).As a result,Iwas
chosen to represent the school in the long jump
and relay events at the District Sports Meet.Be-
fore the sports meet,I had put in a lot of hard
work and dedication during the training sessions.
I woke up early every morning to go for runs and
did countless drills to improve my technique. My
teammates and I supported and encouraged each
other during training, pushing ourselves to do
better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days,I had no events
scheduled for the first day.So I kept myself busy by
watching the others compete.Large tents were pro-
vided for the young competitors on one side of the
track.Despite being assigned the last tent that was
furthest from the track,I made the best of the situa-
tion by decorating it with our school colors and crea-
ting a supportive atmosphere.
The next day,I was getting ready for my events.
The long jump was scheduled for the early after-
noon, followed by the 8X50m relay later in the
afternoon.I thought I was a pretty good jumper,
but as the competition began,I realized I was
vastly outclassed.We finished our jumps,and I
came in fourth place, just missing out on a med-
al.
That was disappointing, but I reminded my-
self that we still had a chance in the 8x50m re-
lay,for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg.
The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned
·46
spots and prepared for the race. After a tense mi-
nute or so,I heard the starter's gun go off. When
the first runners took off,I watched nervously
and excitedly as my team runners kept up with
the others. As they got closer,I realized we were
at least in second place.

cleanly and began my run.
As a result,I left the meet empty-handed.
[参考范文]
My turn arrived and I took the baton(接力
cleanly and began my run.The air rushed
past me as I moved closer to the next runner.
Then disaster struck!I saw a boy run across the
track into my path out of nowhere.I couldn't get
away from him fast enough. We were sent somer-
saulting over him after colliding with a crunch.
Because I was young and agile,I was able to
quickly pick myself up and continue the race.
However, the collision cost us valuable time.I
handed the baton to the next runner.I knew eve-
rything was lost when he ran with all his might,
but it was too late. We'd blown our chance at a
medal.
As a result,I left the meet empty-handed.
As a result,we just assumed it was bad luck.I,
for one, felt terrible for letting the team down,
but what was done was done, and we had no
choice but to accept it.Anyway,it had been an
eventful but unsatisfying day for me.And I
learned about failure and success and how to deal
with them, and I am grateful for the lessons.
