The author of The Joy Luck Club,Amy Tan,
makes a glorious success of writing this non-fic-
tion. The Backyard Bird Chronicles tightens the
focus in describing and drawing a variety of birds
that visit her yard in California. The book consists of
journal entries from 2017 through 2022 that describe
her observations of the behavior of golden
crowned sparrows,Anna's hummingbirds and
other birds, with her drawings of them. The en-
tire package is fascinating, all the more so be-
cause Tan fills the pages with questions about
what she is seeing.
One day, from inside her house,Tan noticed
a finch flying back and forth just outside the glass
door, while looking directly at her.One feeder
was full of seeds, and the bird sat there but did
not eat.Another feeder nearby, devoted to high-
ly favored sunflower seeds,was empty."Could
this bird possibly be signaling that I should refill
its favorite feeder?"Tan wondered. She did refill
it,and the finch "immediately went to the feeder
and ate and ate and ate.
When she began this project,Tan could rec-
ognize precisely three birds in her yard. Now,the
count is 63 species. As a bird lover and observer,
I deeply share her joy at this learning curve:In
2023,I counted 43 bird species in our little patch
of land in southeastern Virginia.
Tan's playful humor mixes with complete an-
thropomorphism(拟人)at times:“I want tourist
junk food!”declares a baby crow(乌鸦)she has
drawn. This playful tone only brings extra
warmth to a beautifully written and illustrated
volume. This book offers reflections on ways that
watching birds can renew our joy in nature, and
maybe even transform our lives.

consists of journal entries from 2017 through
2022 that describe her observations of the be-
havior of golden crowned sparrows,Anna's
hummingbirds and other birds, with her draw-
ings of them.(这本书包括2017年至2022年的
故选A。]
根据第二段“One day,from
inside her house,Tan noticed a finch flying
back and forth just outside the glass door,
while looking directly at her.One feeder was
full of seeds, and the bird sat there but did not
eat.Another feeder nearby,devoted to highly
favored sunflower seeds,was empty.'Could
this bird possibly be signaling that I should re-
fill its favorite feeder?'Tan wondered. She did
refill it,and the finch 'immediately went to the
feeder and ate and ate and ate'.(有一天,谭从
began this project,Tan could recognize pre-
cisely three birds in her yard. Now,the count
Asa
bird lover and observer,I deeply share her joy
at this learning curve:In 2023,I counted 43
bird species in our little patch of land in south-
可知,“this learning
playful humor mixes with complete anthropo-
This playful tone only
brings extra warmth to a beautifully written

Have you ever been so depressed that you
can't sleep?You also can't eat.You can't read.
You have no friends to call up and nothing is good
on TV.So you sigh, press your face down harder
into your pillow, and shed a few tears.
This was my life two years ago.I had just
turned 14 but already found life a struggle.As I
lay in my bed one Saturday,Mom peeked (
into my room to make her regular "Is Emily still
alive"check.I knew that if I spent more time like
this, she would begin dusting me.After sugges-
ting a few things for me to do that I immediately
rejected,Mom made her move,“Emily!Get
dressed!I'm taking the dog out for a walk, and
you're coming with me!”“Why?”I protested.
“Because it''ll make you feel better..”
The thought of moving was unbearable.I
felt as if all of my body parts were weighed down
by tons of bricks.I couldn't remember the last
time I had gone outside.Somehow I found the
strength to slip on a pair of jeans and a black
sweatshirt.Mom was waiting at the door, leash
(狗绳)in hand and dog at her side.
Then,we stepped outside.It was a warm
March day and it had been a long time since the
warmth of the sun had touched my cheeks.Mom
led the dog and me down some dirt paths,
through a big field and reached Halsey Pond. But
the signs of spring had yet to appear and the
scene was rather colorless throughout the entire
journey.

“I'm tired!It's boring,Mom!When can we
go home??”“Not yet,”she'dsay.Mom stopped
to say hi to every jogger, dog walker, runner,
and bicyclist who passed us.Sometimes she
would get into a conversation. They would talk
about weather, dogs, and all small talk topics.
She seemed happy, and was literally glowing
After walking for what seemed an age,
Mom finally said it was time to go back.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I got home,a new feeling seemed to
be awakened.
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I
could take the dog out.
When I got home,a new feeling seemed to
be awakened. The heaviness that had weighed me
down before seemed to have lifted,if only slight-
ly.The simple act of being outside, feeling the
warmth of the sun,and hearing the chirping of
birds had sparked something inside me.It was a
glimmer of hope,a tiny ray of light in the dark-
ness of my depression.I realized that maybe, just
maybe,there was still something worth
living for.
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I
could take the dog out. This time,it was me who
suggested the walk.As we strolled through the
familiar paths,I noticed the subtle changes in the
scenery. The trees were starting to bud, flowers
were beginning to bloom, and the pond was alive
with the sounds of frogs and insects. It was as if
nature itself was coming alive, mirroring the ne-
wfound sense of life stirring within me.With
each step,I felt a little lighter,a little more
alive. And as we returned home,I realized that
sometimes, the simplest moments can have the
most profound impact on our lives.
