“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, but I’ve always been aware from the get-go that there had to be more to being a professional garden designer than that,” says Karen Martin, who worked in real estate before changing careers. “I committed to gaining a deeper understanding of the principles of design. To do that I signed up for a difficult training program that covered everything from the basics of landscape design to more advanced topics.”
In addition to formal education, gaining practical experience is essential for developing the skills needed to be a successful garden designer. “I also spent countless hours volunteering at botanical gardens to gain hands-on experience in the field,” Karen recalls. “It was during these experiences that I learned about plant care and design, and how they interact to create beautiful outdoor spaces.”
“Those interested in becoming a landscape gardener may try building a collection of photographs, drafts, or computer drawings of garden plans that demonstrate skills and creativity,” Karen suggests. “As I gained experience, I started building a catalogue (目录簿) of my work to show my abilities to potential clients or employers.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of the job for Karen has been the opportunity to work with clients to turn their outdoor spaces into something truly unique and beautiful. “I love listening to my clients’ visions and bringing them to life through thoughtful design and plant selection. Seeing the joy on their faces as they walk through their newly designed garden is an experience that never gets old,” says Karen.
“Of course, like any profession, there are challenges. The long hours are tiring, and the weather and soil conditions can all present obstacles (障碍) to creating the perfect outdoor space. But it’s these challenges that make the job all the more rewarding when you’re able to overcome them and create something truly special.
“All in all, becoming a professional garden designer allows me to combine my love for nature with my desire to create beauty. Plus, I always end up having a good night’s rest due to the physical parts of the job. I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Karen concludes.
4. What might Karen think of the training program?
A. It played a key role in her job switch.
B. It was too difficult for her to complete.
C. It focused much on basic designing.
D. It failed to meet her expectations.
5. What does Karen suggest potential landscape gardeners do?
A. Start their own garden.
B. Listen to employers’ ideas.
C. Volunteer at botanical gardens.
D. Build up their bank of work samples.
6. What gives Karen lasting joy in her work?
A. Working long hours under the sun.
B. Watching clients’ satisfied reactions.
C. Overcoming bad weather and soil conditions.
D. Gaining a deeper understanding of gardening.
7. For what reason does Karen appreciate the physical aspect of her job?
A. It benefits her sleep.
B. It keeps her energetic.
C. It strengthens her muscles.
D. It inspires her curiosity about nature.

There are millions of so-called end-user programmers. They’re not going into a career as a professional programmer or computer scientist. They’re going into business, teaching, law, or any number of professions — and they just need a little programming to be more efficient.
If you’ve sorted your email based on rules, customized a game, written a program in Photoshop, used R programming language to analyze some data, or automated a repetitive work process, you’re an end-user programmer.
As an educator who teaches programming, I want to help students in fields other than computer science achieve their goals. But learning how to program well enough to write finished programs can be hard to achieve in a single course because learning the syntax (句法规则) of a programming language takes a lot of time for many students. As a result, a lot of students end up barely able to write small functions, let alone write a full program that can help make their lives better.
Tools built on large language models such as GitHub Copilot may allow me to change these outcomes. Because students can use these tools to handle some of the lower-level details of programming, it frees them to focus on bigger-picture questions that are at the heart of writing software programs.
At the University of California, San Diego, I’ve created an introductory programming course primarily for those who are not computer science students that features Copilot. In this course, I’ve been giving students large, open-ended projects and couldn’t be happier with what they have created. For example, in a project where students had to find and analyze online datasets, I had a neuroscience major create a data visualization tool that illustrated how age and other factors affected cancer risk.
Given the rhetoric about how AI is ruining education by writing papers for students and doing their homework, you might be surprised to hear educators like me talking about its benefits. In my introductory programming course, I see firsthand how AI can empower students in specific ways and expand the ranks of end-user programmers.
8. Which characterizes end-user programmers?
A. Programming in person to enhance efficiency.
B. Helping many with computer problems.
C. Seeking a career in software companies.
D. Developing large language models.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Suggestions for writing small functions.
B. Challenges of traditional programming teaching.
C. The importance of learning programming syntax.
D. The total makeup of a well-functional full program.
10. What would the author call the data visualization tool?
A. A fruitless attempt. B. A half-finished project.
C. A remarkable achievement. D. A task demanding joint efforts.
11. What does the underlined word “rhetoric” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Historical facts. B. Technical terms.
C. Critical judgments. D. Educational theories.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. C
根据文章第一段“They’re going into business, teaching, law, or any number of professions — and they just need a little programming to be more efficient.(他们从事商业、教学、法律或任何其他职业——他们只需要一点编程来提高效率)”以及第二段“If you’ve sorted your email based on rules, customized a game, written a program in Photoshop, used R programming language to analyze some data, or automated a repetitive work process, you’re an end-user programmer.(如果你根据规则对电子邮件进行分类、定制游戏、在Photoshop中编写程序、使用R编程语言分析数据或自动化重复性工作流程,那么你就是一名终端用户程序员)”可知,终端用户程序员的特点是通过编程来提高自身工作效率。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“But learning how to program well enough to write finished programs can be hard to achieve in a single course because learning the syntax of a programming language takes a lot of time for many students. As a result, a lot of students end up barely able to write small functions, let alone write a full program that can help make their lives better.(但是,在一门课程中学会足够好的编程以写出完整的程序是很难的,因为学习编程语言的句法规则对许多学生来说需要大量时间。结果,许多学生最终几乎只能写出小函数,更不用说写出一个能帮助改善他们生活的完整程序了)”可知,本段主要讲的是传统编程教学面临的挑战。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“In this course, I’ve been giving students large, open-ended projects and couldn’t be happier with what they have created. For example, in a project where students had to find and analyze online datasets, I had a neuroscience major create a data visualization tool that illustrated how age and other factors affected cancer risk.(在这门课程中,我一直在给学生布置大型、开放式的项目,而且我对他们创造出来的东西非常满意。例如,在一个学生必须查找和分析在线数据集的项目中,我让一位神经科学专业的学生创建了一个数据可视化工具,该工具展示了年龄和其他因素如何影响癌症风险)”可知,作者对这个数据可视化工具非常满意,认为它是一项了不起的成就。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Given the … about how AI is ruining education by writing papers for students and doing their homework, you might be surprised to hear educators like me talking about its benefits.(鉴于关于AI如何通过帮学生写论文和做作业来摧毁教育的……,你可能会惊讶于听到像我这样的教育工作者谈论它的好处)”可知,划线词下文提到了通过帮学生写论文和做作业来摧毁教育,可推理出这里提到的“rhetoric”是指那些对AI持批评态度的言论,即批判性的评判。

Alita has been highly sensitive to criticism since she was a child. “Three years ago we did patient satisfaction surveys,” explains Alita, who is now a distinguished doctor. “My patients loved the attention I gave them, and my reviews were largely positive. Yet there were a few patients who complained that I sometimes ran late. I haven’t felt the same way about my practice since.”
Sound familiar? If you’re like Alita, you’ve probably been hearing the same advice for much of your life: “Don’t be so sensitive.” Yet new research suggests that this is far harder for some than others.
Three factors can be used to measure our sensitivity to feedback (反馈). The first is Baseline. Some people have a relatively high baseline — they always seem so cheerful no matter how much pressure they are under. Others may have a relatively low happiness baseline, being dissatisfied with their lives, regardless of how well things may be going.
The second variable is Swing. For someone with small swing, nothing excites them much, and few things really get them too upset. If you swing wider emotionally, your ups and downs will be more intense and you’ll require less stimulation to move you off your baseline.
And finally, Sustain or Recovery. How long do you sustain a bounce in your step in the wake of an appreciative email from an important customer? How long does it take you to recover from the public dressing-down you got from your boss on the newsroom floor?
Researchers estimate that biological makeup accounts for about 40% of how we react, and whether it’s a little more or a little less doesn’t matter. The bigger point is that a significant part of how we react to negative feedback comes not from our biological makeup, but rather, from the story we tell ourselves about what the feedback means.
We can all learn to manage feedback more skillfully by learning how to see the feedback at “actual size.” Feedback should be bound in time (feedback about right now is not about the future) and by specificity (feedback about one thing is not about everything) and by size (needing to improve by 10% is different from needing to improve by 80%).
12. What do we know about Alita?
A. She values her work over her emotions.
B. She is overly affected by negative comments.
C. She uses patient surveys to improve her job.
D. She has decided to change her work attitude.
13. Which describes a person with a low baseline and a wide swing?
A. Being easily upset and sensitive to feedback.
B. Staying calm and content despite hardships.
C. Feeling low often but rarely reacting strongly.
D. Being always cheerful but overreacting to criticism.
14. What does “Sustain or Recovery” refer to?
A. The ability to stay positive. B. The frequency of bad emotions.
C. The tendency to dismiss feedback. D. The duration of emotional impact.
15. What is key to managing feedback effectively?
A. Focusing on future outcomes.
B. Responding to all feedback equally.
C. Understanding our biological reactions.
D. Interpreting feedback clearly and specifically.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D
根据文章第一段“Alita has been highly sensitive to criticism since she was a child.(艾丽塔从小就对批评高度敏感)”可知,她极易受到负面评价的影响。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Others may have a relatively low happiness baseline, being dissatisfied with their lives, regardless of how well things may be going.(另一些人快乐基准线较低,无论境遇多好都容易对生活不满。)”与第四段“If you swing wider emotionally, your ups and downs will be more intense and you’ll require less stimulation to move you off your baseline.(情绪波动幅度大的人,情绪起伏会更强烈,一点小事就会牵动情绪。)”可推知,低基准线 + 大幅度情绪波动的人容易心烦、对反馈敏感。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第五段“How long do you sustain a bounce in your step in the wake of an appreciative email from an important customer? How long does it take you to recover from the public dressing-down you got from your boss on the newsroom floor?(收到重要客户发来的赞许邮件后,这份愉悦轻快的心情能维持多久?若是在编辑部当众遭到上司严厉斥责,你又需要多长时间才能平复情绪?)”可推知,Sustain or Recovery指情绪影响持续的时长。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“We can all learn to manage feedback more skillfully by learning how to see the feedback at ‘actual size.’ Feedback should be bound in time…and by specificity…and by size…(我们可以学会精准看待反馈,从时间……、具体事件……、影响程度……三个维度清晰客观解读反馈)”可知,有效处理反馈的关键是清晰、具体地解读反馈。

七、任务型读写:本大题共1小题,共25分。
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The golf ball stood still on the grass. I looked at my surroundings carefully, trying to find the best angle to hit the ball. Everyone was looking at me. I took a deep breath and held my driver (开球杆) up in the air, ready to swing.
Suddenly I heard a sound. “Tweet. Tweet.” I shook my head. This wasn’t the time for distractions. A few seconds later, the sound came back again. “Tweet…” I listened. The crowd started to whisper. I could feel my opponent Erin staring at me, becoming impatient. I had to hit the ball.
I swung my driver as I heard the tweeting becoming louder. What was that sound? I thought unhappily as my driver hit right into the ball, sending it flying off course and heading towards the bushes lining the field. Erin hit the golf ball, making it all the way into the hole.
Then there was a 20-minute intermission (中场休息) until the second half of the tournament began. I heard “Tweet...” again. I decided to figure out what it was. I ran into the woods and found a fallen nest under a tree. A mother bluebird, with two babies, lay in the nest. She stared at me, looking frightened. Her wing had a cut and blood was coming out of it. Her babies were weak. “What am I supposed to do?” If I left them, they would be in danger. There was a pet hospital, about 20 minutes’ walk from here. If I walked to the hospital, I would lose the tournament. I struggled.
Eventually, I made my decision. I carefully picked up the nest and birds, and headed towards the hospital. Soon, I arrived at the hospital. There was a woman at the front desk. I ran over to her and explained the whole situation to her. She nodded as she listened carefully to me. After I finished explaining, she put on a pair of gloves and took the nest of birds with her. She told me to stay in the area as she disappeared into an examination room. I stayed where I was, praying.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
After ten minutes or so, she walked back to her desk and told me what the result was.

I’d lost the chance to beat Erin but I didn’t regret it.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
After ten minutes or so, she walked back to her desk and told me what the result was. She said the bleeding had stopped and all the birds would be fine. But they would need to stay for a few days. I sighed with relief, feeling the weight lift from my chest, and expressed my heartfelt gratitude before quickly leaving the hospital. Upon arriving at the golf course, I found the game had already ended. Erin ended up being the winner. Since nobody knew where I had gone, I was seen as having abandoned the tournament. I watched her from a distance, proudly holding a gold medal and accepting congratulations from her fellow players.
I’d lost the chance to beat Erin but I didn’t regret it. Winning isn’t everything; rescuing the birds mattered far more to me. I would have opportunities to win in future but I had only one chance to save those delicate lives. Several days later, I returned from the hospital, holding the nest with the healthy birds nestled inside. In the woods, I found an oak tree and carefully secured the nest among its branches, filled with joy and a sense of purpose, knowing I had given them a precious second chance.

C
D
