1.identify different types of ellipsis in English sentences (simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences).
2.apply ellipsis appropriately in speaking and writing to avoid repetition and improve fluency.
Learning objectives

Why does the author leave them out?
Sentence (a) leaves out “lines”. Sentence (b) leaves out “it is”.
To avoid repeating the word or expression that is too obvious and make the sentences more concise.
Grammar: Ellipsis(省略)
What is ellipsis?
省略是指省去可以根据上下文语境或情景语境恢复的句子成分。英语中存在多种多样的省略现象,句子中既可以省略主语、谓语、谓语的一部分或宾语,也可以一起省略主语和谓语。省略在口语和书面语中都非常普遍。
一. 简单句的省略
省略主语:祈使句中主语通常省略。
(I) Thank you for your help.
(It) Doesn’t matter.
(I) Beg your pardon
省略主谓或主谓语的一部分。
(There is) No smoking.
(Is there) Anything wrong?
(Will you) Have a smoke?
Why (do you) not say hello to him?
省略作宾语的不定式短语,只保留to, 但如果该宾语是动词be或完成时态,则须在之后加上be或have。
-Are you going there?
-Yes, I’d like to(go there).
He didn’t give me the chance, though he had promised to (give me the chance).
-Are you an engineer?
-No, but I want to be (an engineer).
-He hasn’t finished the task yet.
-Well, he ought to have (finished the task).
4.有时句子还可以省略表语和宾语的一部分。
a. –Are you thirsty? – Yes, I am (thirsty).
b. ---Where should we go?
---I don’t care (where you go). Anywhere you want.
5.there be句型和感叹句中的省略。
a. (Is there) Anything I can do?
b. What a meaningful and unforgettable experience (I've got) !
Observation one:在祈使句中,____语通常被省略。
6.有时句子还可以省略介词。
7. It's no use (in) crying.
8. He has some difficulty (in) learning English.
9. My parents will go to Beijing next week.

二.并列句中的省略
1. 两个并列句中,后一个分句常省略与前一分句中相同的部分。
a. Tom likes collecting stamps but (Tom) hates playing football.
b. My brother is a doctor and my sister (is) a lawyer.
c. He has a knowledge of first aid but his friend doesn’t (have a knowledge of first aid).
2. 动词不定式的省略
I saw her (to) go into the classroom just now.
She was seen to go into the classroom just now.
Summary 3:
使役动词及感官动词后面作宾语补足语的不定式一定要省去“to”, 但在被动语态中须将“to”复原。

三. 复合句的省略
1. 在限制性定语从句中作宾语的关系代词可以省略。
He is one of the men I can trust.
This is the very pen I lent to him.
The way he explained to us was quite simple

先行词way表示方式且在从句中作状语时关系词也可以省掉,也可以用that或in which.
3.宾语从句的省略
I think the economic conditions will improve, and that we will make
rapid progress next year.
宾从中的连接词that可以省略,但并列宾从中的that 不能省。
4. 状语从句的省略
When taken (take) according to directions, the drug has little side effect.
Though lacking (lack) money, his parents managed to send him to university.
When hungry (饥饿), you should eat more meat.

当状语从句的主语和主句的主语一致,且从句谓语是be动词或其变化形式的时候,从句的主语和be动词可以一起省掉。
