Their stories are still being written, and they won't be complete until you share your side. The Missing Pieces Project invites you to share your pictures and stories of the unique, significant and memorable places on the National Heritage List for England. The List is a register of all nationally protected his toric buildings and sites across England. Your view of a place is as unique as you are, so every snapshot and story you add is an important piece of the picture. And the more pieces of the picture we have, the better we can work together to protect what makes these places special. Whether you have a connection to a place already or you' re discovering it for the first time, your views add important new pieces to the picture. Images: from phone snaps to scans of old photos and architects' drawings, from wide angles to close-ups Stories: from memories of holidays, school trips and family events to information about grand openings and transformations Photos must be ones you took yourself, from public land or rights of way, or with permission from the landowner. To add an historic image, you must have the rights to it. See the Missing Pieces Project terms and conditions for more information. Sign in and make a difference. 1. What is the purpose of the Missing Pieces Project? A. To create fine art pieces. B. To preserve historic places. C. To promote a story contest. D. To teach photography skills. 2. How can you contribute to the project? A. By scanning a portrait of a great architect. B. By taking a picture of a newly- built museum. C. By writing a special story of your trip to France. D. By sharing memories of a protected English site. 3. What is required for a photo taken on a private land? A. Quality information. B. Public permission. C. The owner's support. D. A right background. B 2. D 3. 根据第二段“And the more pieces of the picture we have, the better we can work together to protect what makes these places special.(我们拥有的照片越多,我们就能更好地共同保护这些地方的独特之处)”可推知,这个项目的目的是为了保护历史遗址。 根据第二段“The Missing Pieces Project invites you to share your pictures and stories of the unique, significant and memorable places on the National Heritage List for England.(“缺失的碎片项目”邀请您分享您在英国国家遗产名录上的独特、重要和令人难忘的地方的照片和故事)”可知,通过分享受保护的英国遗址的记忆来为该项目做出贡献。 根据最后一段“Photos must be ones you took yourself, from public land or rights of way, or with permission from the landowner.(照片必须是你自己拍的,获得公共土地或道路权利,或得到土地所有者的许可)”可知,在私人土地上拍摄的照片必须有土地所有者的支持。故选C。 B Dressed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft’s small frame is overshadowed by the red curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. The dramatic moment was captured (捕捉) in a photo taken atop Iceland’s Krafla volcano in 1984, during the final breathing of a multi-year-long eruption. Looking at the image, one can almost feel the volcano’s heat, hear its roar, and sense Krafft’s heart pounding as the volcanologist does what she loves most: bearing witness to our planet’s strong anger. Katia Krafft was a fearless pioneer in volcanology, studying the explosive peaks at a time when there were few women in the field. She was born in the Rhine valley of northeast France in 1942, curing the height of World War II. The chaotic human world drove both Katia and her husband, Maurice Krafft, also a volcanologist, to seek comfort in nature. The moment a volcano exploded, they dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event. The Kraffts used their videos of explosive eruptions to explain the complex risks and uncertainties of these disasters. It changed the ability to communicate volcano science. Their videos are credited as one of the primary reasons that officials in the Philippines took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991 seriously. Yet the Kraffs didn’t live to see that eruption. The couple died less than two weeks earlier in Japan during a monstrous eruption, which claimed 41 other lives. Katia’s impact on volcanology has reached far beyond her death and has encouraged many young women to study our restless planet. “Katia Krafft is definitely the reason why I’m doing this job,” says Carla Tiraboschi, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minster, Germany. Tiraboschi first saw Katia in a documentary when she was just six or seven years old and has been crazy about volcanoes ever since. She now studies the processes at work deep below the volcanic peaks. 4. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1? A. The importance of volcanology. B. The damage of a volcanic eruption. C. The difficulty of filming volcanoes. D. Katia Krafft’s passion for her work. 5. What can we know about the videos of explosive eruptions? A. They prevented a natural disaster. B. They served as a warning in Japan. C. They helped spread volcano science. D. They covered Mount Pinatubo’s eruption. 6. How did Katia influence Carla Tiraboschi? A. Katia’s death made her restless. B. Katia helped her with her research. C. Katia’s deeds inspired her career choice. D. Katia taught her to make a documentary. 7. Which of the following best describes Katia Krafft? A. Creative and honest. B. Brave and enthusiastic. C. Ambitious and outgoing. D. Determined and generous. D 5. C 6. C 7. 第一段中“Dressed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft’s small frame is overshadowed by the red curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. The dramatic moment was captured (捕捉) in a photo taken atop Iceland’s Krafla volcano in 1984, during the final breathing of a multi-year-long eruption. 根据第三段“The Kraffts used their videos of explosive eruptions to explain the complex risks and uncertainties of these disasters. It changed the ability to communicate volcano science. Their videos are credited as one of the primary reasons that officials in the Philippines took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991 seriously. (Krafft夫妇用他们拍摄的火山爆炸性喷发视频来解释这些灾难的复杂风险和不确定性。它改变了火山科学交流的能力。他们的视频被认为是菲律宾官员认真对待1991年皮纳图博火山喷发警告信号的主要原因之一。)”可知,Krafft夫妇用拍摄的火山爆炸性喷发视频解释这些灾难的复杂风险和不确定性,帮助传播火山的科学知识。故选C。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Katia’s impact on volcanology has reached far beyond her death and has encouraged many young women to study our restless planet. She now studies the processes at work deep below the volcanic peaks.( Katia对火山学的影响远远超出了她的死亡,并鼓励许多年轻女性研究我们这个不安分的星球。德国明斯特大学的博士后研究员Carla Tiraboschi说:“Katia Krafft肯定是我从事这项工作的原因。”Carla Tiraboschi第一次见到Katia是在一部纪录片中,当时她只有六七岁,从那以后就一直对火山着迷。她现在研究火山峰深处的工作过程。)”可知,Carla Tiraboschi受Katia Krafft的事迹的鼓舞,选择从事火山研究。故选C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段最后一句“Looking at the image, one can almost feel the volcano’s heat, hear its roar, and sense Krafft’s heart pounding as the volcanologist does what she loves most: bearing witness to our planet’s strong anger. (看着这张照片,人们几乎可以感受到火山的热量,听到它的轰鸣声,并感觉到火山学家Krafft的心脏在跳动,她正在做她最喜欢的事情:见证我们星球的强烈愤怒。)”可知,研究活火山喷发是Krafft最喜欢的事情,结合第二段最后一句“The moment a volcano exploded, they dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event.(火山爆发的那一刻,他们放下一切去分析和捕捉每一个事件的美丽和神秘。)”可知,研究火山喷发对于Krafft来说是重要的事情,由此可知,Krafft对于追逐研究危险的活火山充满热情;根据第二段中“Katia Krafft was a fearless pioneer in volcanology, studying the explosive peaks at a time when there were few women in the field. …The moment a volcano exploded, they dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event.(Katia Krafft是一位无畏的火山学先驱,她在研究火山爆发高峰的时候,这个领域里几乎没有女性。……火山爆发的那一刻,他们放下一切去分析和捕捉每一个事件的美丽和神秘。)”以及第三段最后一句“Yet the Kraffs didn’t live to see that eruption. The couple died less than two weeks earlier in Japan during a monstrous eruption, which claimed 41 other lives.(然而,卡夫一家没能活着看到那次喷发。 B。 C A common theme running in fiction and mythology is the idea of orphan (孤儿) heroes and superheroes. Fairytales introduce us to children of absent fathers and cruel caretakers, like Cinderella and Snow White. Fiction makes much of the parentage of David Copperfield and Jane Eyre. Comic books offer orphaned heroes like Batman, Spiderman, or you’ll notice characters in more modern fiction from films and books like Harry Potter and Leia Skywalker. Why are so many heroes and superheroes orphans? Lacking parents, orphan heroes and superheroes are considered “children of the world”. Having raised themselves, and having been freed from much of the complex relationship of child to parent, ophan heroes and superheroes are at much greater liberty to interact with the world, and they may look at the world as parent and all its inhabitants as family. Some orphans seek only a home and a family. David Copperfield finds this with his aunt. Cinderella and Snow White escape evil stepmothers by marrying. Others, especially of the superhero “cast” are never really given family in the traditional sense. In fact, though they may have strong bonds with friends, or with caretakers, they are constantly attempting to prove worthiness to the world, and are desperate to save the people they do care about. You can also evaluate orphan heroes and superheroes as a means by which anxiety, loneliness, and independence are emphasized. The comic book type superhero is usually one who suffers always, or at least most of the time. Loss of even one parent can be intensely upsetting and forever change a child’s life, and superheroes may do all in their power to prevent this fate for other children. Empathy for suffering and a desire to end or prevent it for others are increased. It’s a good idea to consider why we see this theme expressed so commonly. Perhaps we ⅵew these orphans or poorly parented children as ultimately our own. They may not just be children of the world, but may belong to each reader. 8. Why does the author mention some famous characters in Paragraph 1? A. To clarify the writing purpose. B. To advertise classic fiction. C. To support a statement. D. To make an overall outline. 9. Which of the following drives some orphans to become superheroes? A. Intention to escape a family. B. Desire to prove their value to the world. C. Strong bonds with their family. D. Wishes for freedom to explore the world. 10. Which word best describes the comic book type superhero? A. Childish. B. Dependent. C. Cheerful. D. Sympathetic. 11. What may make the theme of orphan superheroes so common? A. Ophans’ ultimte fate is pitiful B. Readers have a preference for tragedies. C. Orphan characters are reflections of the readers. D. Readers may regard orphan characters as their own kids. C 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第一段首句“A common theme running in fiction and mythology is the idea of orphan (孤儿) heroes and superheroes.(在小说和神话中,一个共同的主题是孤儿英雄和超级英雄的概念)”可知,很多神话和小说的共同主题是孤儿英雄和超级英雄,接着下文“Fairytales introduce us to children of absent fathers and cruel caretakers, like Cinderella and Snow White. Fiction makes much of the parentage of David Copperfield and Jane Eyre. Comic books offer orphaned heroes like Batman, Spiderman, or you’ll notice characters in more modern fiction from films and books like Harry Potter and Leia Skywalker.(童话故事向我们介绍了没有父亲和残忍的监护人的孩子,比如灰姑娘和白雪公主。小说中大量描写了大卫·科波菲尔和简·爱的出身。漫画书中有像蝙蝠侠、蜘蛛侠这样的孤儿英雄,或者你会注意到电影和书中更现代的小说人物,比如哈利波特和莱娅·天行者)”提到了很多著名人物角色,以支撑段首观点,所以作者在第一段提到了一些著名的人物是为了支持一个表述。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“In fact, though they may have strong bonds with friends, or with caretakers, they are constantly attempting to prove worthiness to the world, and are desperate to save the people they do care about.(事实上,尽管它们可能与朋友或看护人关系密切,但它们不断试图证明自己对世界的价值,并且不顾一切地拯救它们真正关心的人)”可知,想要证明自己对世界的价值的欲望驱使很多孤儿成为了超级英雄。 根据倒数第二段中“…and superheroes may do all in their power to prevent this fate for other children. Empathy for suffering and a desire to end or prevent it for others are increased.(……超级英雄可能会尽其所能,防止其他孩子遭遇这种命运。对痛苦的同情和为他人结束或防止痛苦的愿望增加了)”可知,漫画书类型的超级英雄富有同情心。故选D项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段内容“It’s a good idea to consider why we see this theme expressed so commonly. Perhaps we ⅵew these orphans or poorly parented children as ultimately our own. They may not just be children of the world, but may belong to each reader.(好好思考一下为什么我们看到这个主题如此普遍。也许我们把这些孤儿或缺乏教养的孩子视为自己的孩子。他们可能不只是世界的孩子,也可能属于每一位读者)”可知,超级英雄孤儿的主题如此普遍是因为读者可能会把孤儿角色当成自己的孩子。故选D项。 D The universe, with its countless stars and galaxies, can be visually impressive, especially when we use high-powered telescopes to peer beyond the range of human vision. But what if we could hear those objects as well? That may sound impossible at first — how can sound travel through the vacuum of space? Isn’t the universe silent? Far from it, says Kim Arcand, an expert on data visualization at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Her team has found ways to strengthen distant sound waves that would otherwise be undetectable by human ears. They’ve also employed creative processing — taking visual data from infrared and X-ray telescopes and assigning notes to that data-to show celestial (天体的) phenomena via sounds. These “sonifications” (可听化) provide a new way for people to experience those awe-inspiring objects. Arcand, working with colleagues at the Smithsonian, Harvard and NASA, together with a Canadian science outreach team called SYSTEM Sounds, has been making these custom-made audio tracks that bring celestial images to life. An obvious match-up is to pair brighter parts of an image with louder sounds or to present longer wavelengths of light with lower-pitched sounds, and shorter ones with higher-pitched. Now, many of the tracks can be heard on YouTube, paired up with the images that inspired them, 16 of those sonifications have been put into an album called Universal Harmonies, which will be available on CD and streaming platforms beginning March 10. Aside from bringing science to a wider audience, Arcand also believes that sonification can bolster the science itself by allowing more people to contribute to our understanding of the universe. One of her goals, she says, is to show that “people who are blind or low-vision ... can also become part of the scientific enterprise.” For University of Toronto astrophysicist Matt Russo, who runs SYSTEM Sounds together with musician Andrew Santaguida, sonification has been a chance to bring together his two great passions — astronomy and music. It’s both an art and a science. “It was just instantly obvious that it was fun and rewarding,” he says. 12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Patterns of sound waves. B. Advantages of visualization. C. Processes of data analysis. D. Approaches to sonifications. 13. How did Arcand’s team turn the images of universe into sounds? A. By uploading images onto streaming platforms. B. By pairing images with sounds through creative technology. C. By identifying and connecting different sound waves. D. By processing audio data with the help of SYSTEM Sounds. 14. What does the underlined word “bolster” probably mean in paragraph 4? A. Support. B. Prove. C. Mirror. D. Lead. 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. How Does Sound Come into Being? B. What Does the Universe Sound Like? C. Universe: The Mystery Uncovered D. SYSTEM Sounds: A Pioneer in Space 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段“Far from it, says Kim Arcand, an expert on data visualization at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Her team has found ways to strengthen distant sound waves that would otherwise be undetectable by human ears. They’ve also employed creative processing — taking visual data from infrared and X-ray telescopes and assigning notes to that data-to show celestial (天体的) phenomena via sounds. These “sonifications” (可听化) provide a new way for people to experience those awe-inspiring objects.”(史密森天体物理天文台的数据可视化专家金·阿坎德说,事实远非如此。 根据第三段中“An obvious match-up is to pair brighter parts of an image with louder sounds or to present longer wavelengths of light with lower-pitched sounds, and shorter ones with higher-pitched.”(一种明显的匹配方法是将图像中较亮的部分与较响的声音配对,或者将波长较长的光与较低的声音配对,将波长较短的光与较高的声音配对。) 根据划线单词上文“Aside from bringing science to a wider audience,”(除了将科学带给更广泛的受众之外……) 故选A项。 结合第一段中“But what if we could hear those objects as well? That may sound impossible at first — how can sound travel through the vacuum of space? Isn’t the universe silent?”(但如果我们也能听到这些物体呢?这听起来似乎不可能——声音怎么能在真空的太空中传播呢?难道宇宙不是寂静的吗?)可知,B项“宇宙的声音是怎样的?”适合作为本文的最佳标题。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Research shows that we spend one-third to one-half of our waking life not living in the present. ___16___ Our brains transport us to past events, imagined future scenes and other internal thoughts. This allows for introspection (内省) — the space to imagine, remember, reflect and then use these fantasies to solve problems, innovate and create. But introspection can sometimes lead to more harm than good. ___17___ When we focus inward to work through our problems, we may find that doing so causes us to feel worse. Negative thought cycles like this can make our capacity for introspection feel more like a curse than a blessing. The fact that introspection is both a helpful tool and destructive force is a great contradiction of the human mind. Fortunately, science has begun to explain why this happens, and how to control it. ___18___ This fires up our emotions to the degree of rejecting alternative ways of thinking about the issue that might cool us down. In other words, we lose insight. One natural solution to this problem is to zoom out — to “step back” from your problems so you can think about them more objectively. ___19___ However, not just any conversation will do. The key is to focus on talking to people who not only allow you to express your emotions but also help broaden your horizons. Introspection is central to the makeup of the human mind. The challenge is to minimize the negative aspects while achieving its potential. ___20___ A. But it can be wonderful to live in the past. B. We naturally separate from the here and now. C. It might contribute to anxiety and depression. D. Another way to gain insight is to talk to others. E. Regulating negative emotions also helps to reason wisely. F. Negative thought cycles occur when we zoom in too close on our problems. G. Being aware of how our minds work can help us make the best of introspection. B 17. C 18. F 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Research shows that we spend one-third to one-half of our waking life not living in the present.(研究表明,我们醒着的时候,有三分之一到一半的时间都不是活在当下)”以及后文“Our brains transport us to past events, imagined future scenes and other internal thoughts.(我们的大脑把我们带到过去的事件,想象未来的场景和其他内在的想法)”可知,上文提到有三分之一到一半的时间都不是活在当下,后文则说我们的大脑把我们带到过去的事件,可见我们总是与此时此地的事物相分离。 【17题详解】 根据上文“This allows for introspection (内省) — the space to imagine, remember, reflect and then use these fantasies to solve problems, innovate and create. But introspection can sometimes lead to more harm than good.(这给了我们自省的空间——想象、回忆、反思,然后利用这些幻想来解决问题、创新和创造。但自省有时弊大于利)”以及后文“When we focus inward to work through our problems, we may find that doing so causes us to feel worse. Negative thought cycles like this can make our capacity for introspection feel more like a curse than a blessing.(当我们集中精力解决问题时,我们可能会发现这样做会让我们感觉更糟。像这样的消极思想循环会让我们的自省能力感觉更像是一种诅咒而不是一种祝福)”可知,本句承接上文进一步解释说明自省带来的弊端,故C选项“它可能会导致焦虑和抑郁”符合语境,故选C。 【18题详解】 根据后文“This fires up our emotions to the degree of rejecting alternative ways of thinking about the issue that might cool us down. In other words, we lose insight. One natural solution to this problem is to zoom out — to “step back” from your problems so you can think about them more objectively.(这将我们的情绪激发到拒绝其他可能让我们冷静下来的思考问题的方式的程度。换句话说,我们失去了洞察力。解决这个问题的一个自然的办法是缩小范围——从你的问题中“退一步”,这样你就可以更客观地思考它们)”可知,后文提到从自己的问题中“后退一步”就可以更客观地思考它们,即建议不要过于关注自己的问题。故F选项“当我们过于关注自己的问题时,消极思维循环就会发生”符合语境,故选F。 【19题详解】 根据后文“However, not just any conversation will do. The key is to focus on talking to people who not only allow you to express your emotions but also help broaden your horizons.(然而,并不是任何对话都可以。关键是要专注于与那些不仅能让你表达情感,还能开阔你视野的人交谈)”可知,后文提到了和人对话的注意事项。由此可知,本句是在建议获得洞察力的方法是和别人交谈。故D选项“另一种获得洞察力的方法是和别人交谈”符合语境,故选D。 【20题详解】 本段第一句“Introspection is central to the makeup of the human mind.(内省是人类思维构成的核心)”本段说明内省是思维的核心,接着“The challenge is to minimize the negative aspects while achieving its potential.(我们面临的挑战是在发挥其潜力的同时尽量减少其负面影响)”说明我们要减少负面影响,因此推断G项“知道我们的思想是如何工作的,可以帮助我们充分利用内省。” I love and enjoy playing the piano. Midweek, no one was around here. The nearby protected wetlands ran along the shore. Songbirds, ducks, and Canada geese slid by on the breeze, touching down briefly on the water’s surface before flapping (拍打)and quacking their way back up into the sky. Standing at the lake’s edge, I cast my fishing line onto the smooth-as-glass water. Down the shoreline was Isaiah, who liked to fish alone, away from noise and other people. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons (潜鸟) crowded together not far from the shoreline. Loons usually travel alone, but here were five of them in a group. One loon, making painful sounds, swam away from the group, toward me. It seemed like it was trying to get my attention. ”Isaiah! Come here!” Isaiah pressed his finger against his lips, pointed to where he had cast his line, and shook his head gently. “Just get over here. Now!” I yelled. He laid his fishing pole down and dragged his feet, moving toward me at a snail’s pace. “Come here!” I yelled again. “Take a look at that loon. It keeps getting closer and closer!” On hearing this, Isaiah fastened his pace. The loon stopped in the shallow water near shore, not ten feet away from us. It was so close that we could see its red eyes. Oddly, the bird’s wings were held tight against its spotted black-and-white body. Though scared of its sharp beak (喙), we stepped into the water cautiously. As we approached the loon, we both saw something around its neck. Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red-hook deeply stuck in its body, and fishing line was wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t fly or fish or survive. It was asking us to help! Isaiah rushed to grab the scissors from the toolbox and came back. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With a sigh of relief, I set the loon down on the water. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Isaiah rushed to grab the scissors from the toolbox and came back. While turning back to the spot, he shouted and asked me to grab the poor loon. Realizing the fact that he wanted to help free the loon from the deadly fishing line and hook, I did as he required. Upon arrival, he knelt down and cut the fishing line first, carefully but quickly, in case the scissor hurt the loon. Then, he unfolded the red-hook that stuck in its body.At the moment, the loon sounded pleasantly.(76) With a sigh of relief, I set the loon down on the water. The poor creature flapped its wings happily, quacking its way in the lake. Then, it swam toward us again. Using its head, it touched our hands, seemingly saying that we were to be thanked. We felt greatly moved and excited. We clearly knew that what we had done to the creature was what we should do in our daily life. We are all masters of our environment, just like living things. We should live in peace with them. B Dressed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft’s small frame is overshadowed by the red curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. C A common theme running in fiction and mythology is the idea of orphan (孤儿) heroes and superheroes. D The universe, with its countless stars and galaxies, can be visually impressive, especially when we use high-powered telescopes to peer beyond the range of human vision. SYSTEM Sounds: A Pioneer in Space Research shows that we spend one-third to one-half of our waking life not living in the present. I love and enjoy playing the piano. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
