Many Chinese learners find it hard to write and memorize (记忆) Chinese characters. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American student, sees them in a special way. To her, each Chinese character tells its own story.
In Lena’s eyes, Chinese characters look like different objects. The character “ren” (meaning “person”) seems like a cat’s mouth, “ceng” (meaning “once”) looks like an angry robot, and the traditional form of “wu” (meaning “nothing”) makes her think of a sheep.
This March, Lena tried to draw Chinese characters for the first time and shared her creative drawings online. To her surprise, they spread quickly and received 40,000 likes overnight, raising discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange (交流).
Some say Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people. “It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters,” she said, adding that the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the popular internet word “orz” looks like a person kneeling (跪下) and bowing, but in English, it carries no meaning.
Lena prepares to share more drawings online. Her story shows that language is more than just words—it’s about connection (联系) and seeing the world through others’ eyes. That’s also the spirit behind UN Chinese Language Day, celebrated on April 20.
“This day encourages people to examine their own language in new ways and discover its creativity (创造力) and beauty,” said Lena. She also advises Chinese learners around the world to communicate more with Chinese people. “It’s not only fun but also a great cultural exchange.”
根据材料内容选择最佳答案,并将其标号填入题前括号内。
6. What does the character “ren” look like in Lena’s eyes?
A. B. C. D.
7. How did Lena feel the next day after sharing her drawings online?
A. Upset. B. Proud. C. Nervous. D. Surprised.
8. Why can Lena find beauty in Chinese characters, according to Lena’s words?
A. Because she is creative. B. Because they are new to her.
C. Because she likes Chinese culture. D. Because they are similar to English words.
9. What is Lena’s advice for Chinese learners around the world?
A. To examine the language in new ways.
B. To use pictures to help remember characters.
C. To take every chance to write in Chinese.
D. To connect with Chinese people for cultural exchange.
10. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Art of Chinese Characters
B. The Importance of Cultural Exchange
C. A Creative Way to Explain Chinese Characters
D. The Spirit Behind UN Chinese Language Day

Overfishing (过度捕捞) happens when fish are caught faster than they can grow back. This causes fish populations to fall and harms the ocean environment. It’s not just the fish that suffer (遭受……苦处)—other sea animals like turtles (海龟), dolphins, and even whales can get caught by accident. This is called bycatch.
Overfishing is mostly caused by poor fishing practices and a lack (缺乏) of rules. Some fishing companies catch more fish to meet the growing need, but this leads to a rapid drop in fish numbers. As fish numbers decrease, other sea animals that depend on fish for food face problems. For example, if small fish disappear, larger fish and sea birds will lose their food.
One of the biggest dangers of overfishing is that some fish could disappear forever. Bluefin tuna, monkfish, and even sharks are at risk. When these fish disappear, it harms the whole ocean environment, causing more problems.
To protect our oceans, we need better fishing rules to limit (限制) catches and protect fish during some seasons. We should also reduce bycatch by using special fishing equipment, like Turtle Exclusion Devices (TED), which allow turtles to escape from nets.
It’s time for everyone to take action and help protect our oceans! We can all help by choosing seafood that is caught. Tell your family and friends about overfishing and why it matters. Together, we can make a difference and keep our oceans full of life for the future.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案,并将其标号填入题前括号内。
11. When does bycatch happen?
A. When fish populations fall rapidly.
B. When the ocean environment becomes very bad.
C. When the fish are caught faster than they can grow back.
D. When people catch the sea animals they don’t mean to catch.
12. What does the underlined (划线的) word “decrease” mean?
A. Appear. B. Disappear. C. Fall. D. Grow.
13. What happens if small fish disappear from the ocean?
A. Sea plants grow faster. B. Water becomes dirtier.
C. Sharks produce more babies. D. Some fish and birds lose their food.
14. What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about?
