"How are things back at the office?"one of the gentlemen in my bicycle tour group asked me as
we were nearing the end of another lengthy ride through Croatia's scenic countryside.
"I assume they are going fine,"I said."I haven't had any contact and I don't plan to."
“Your phone isn'ton?”he asked,incredulously..“You haven't checked your email?”
"My phone is off and no,I'm not planning on checking email,"I said.
My wife Heidi and I took our children,Daniel and Rachel,on a two-week trip to
Croatia, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We made the choice to spend
some of our money on this wonderful experience so we could spend time bonding with each
other and the kids.
Why would I destroy the environment we had traveled thousands of miles to create by
bringing my work environment into it?That would be counter-productive to everything I
wanted out of this trip.If I had worked during this experience,I would have taken time
away from my family and sent them the message that work takes priority over them.
In addition to sharing this incredible experience,I wanted to take us all out of the
activity-driven world we live in.If I had had my cellphone on and been constantly searching
out a wireless connection to keep up with the office,I would just have brought that hyper-
connected environment into the peaceful, meaningful world I was trying to create.
In addition to creating lifelong memories with my family, another wonderful thing
happened as a result of this bike trip.As we were returning home,I was flooded with new
ideas.I came up with concepts for nine blog posts and several ideas that I wanted to
incorporate into my business.
Taking time off restored and rejuvenated me and allowed my creative spirit to really
come to the surface. How can you accomplish that goal if you simply move the source of
that stress to a different location?

2-2
C.to tell his family that his work is more important for him
D.to escape from his boring work environment at the office
26.What would the author probably do after returning home from their bike trip?
A.He would be busy with all his office work again.
B.He would be caught in a big flood of new business.
C.He would have many new fresh ideas for his business.
D.He would make up for his missing blog posts during the journey.
27.The underlined word"rejuvenated"in the last paragraph means"
A.got one exhausted

When I was 9,we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow,
London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city
except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days,I felt at a loss and out
of place.Until I made a discovery.
Southbank,at an eastern bend in the Thames,is the center of British skateboarding,
where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing.I loved it.I soon
made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite:Safe.
Safe meant cool.It meant hello.It meant don't worry about it.Once,when trying a
certain trick on the beam(),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and
Toby came over, helping me up:Safe,man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the
trick,my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:"Safe!Safe!Safe!"And that's what
mattered-landing tricks,being a good skater.
When I was 15,my family moved to Washington.I tried skateboarding there, but the
locals were far less welcoming.Within a couple of years,I'd given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004,I found myself wandering down to Southbank,
spending hours there.I've traveled back several times since, most recently this past
spring. The day was cold but clear;tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters.
Weaving()among the kids who rushed by on their boards,I found my way to the
beam.Then a rail-thin teenager,in a baggy white T-shirt,skidded (up to the beam.
He sat next to me.He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few
of his glances."I was a local here 20 years ago,"I told him. Then, slowly,he began to
nod his head..“Safe,man.Safe.”
“Yeah,”I said.“Safe.”
28.What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London?
A.He felt disappointed.
B.He gave up his hobby.
2-3
C.He liked the weather there.
D.He had disagreements with his family.
29.What do the underlined words“Safe!Safe!Safe!”probably mean?
A.Be careful!
B.Well done!
C.No way!

30.Why did the author like to spend time in Southbank when he returned to London?
A.To join the skateboarding.
B.To make new friends.
C.To learn more tricks.
D.To relive his childhood days.
31.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Children should learn a second language.
B.Sport is necessary for children's health.
C.Children need a sense of belonging
D.Seeing the world is a must for children.

During the rosy years of elementary school ()I enjoyed sharing my dolls and
jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status.I was the queen of the playground.
Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not
by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others,
among whom I soon found myself.
Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology.Mitch Prinstein,a professor
of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories:the likable and the status
seekers. The likables'plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships,
jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and
work. Then there's the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence:status born of
power and even dishonorable behavior.
Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed,Dr.Prinstein's studies show unpleasant
consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school,as well as those least liked
in elementary school, are“most likely to engage(从事)in dangerous and risky behavior'”.
In one study,Dr.Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents,
scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys
(调查研究).“We found that the least wel--liked teens had become more aggressive over
time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed
that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect
0nus.”
Dr.Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a
play date-sharing,kindness,openness -carry over to later years and make you better
able to relate and connect with others.
2-4
In analyzing his and other research,Dr.Prinstein came to another conclusion:Not only

When it comes to the Internet, passwords which people often use are under fire.
36
Research has shown that passwords are not a very good way to protect sensitive
information.
People would use some random characters, numbers and symbols.Furthermore,a
unique password would be used for every site or application the user uses.Unfortunately,
the more complex they become, the more people are likely to forget their passwords. The
longer the passwords are,the more easily forgotten they are.
37
Google is trying to kill off the passwords on Android devices by introducing the Trust API,
which does what simple passwords cannot do.It gives developers a framework for securing their
applications using a number of security systems and metrics (on the device.A Trust Score
will be generated based on the metrics the device gathers.38
The Trust Score will be generated based on all metrics like your device location, face
scanning,fingerprint and so on.Taken one at a time,these metrics are not secure.But
taken together, these metrics will help define the real "you".
39 This summer,Google will be running tests with some banks to see if
Trust API meets their needs before rolling out to all developers later this year.It may take
another year for apps and popular sites to start using the Trust API.
This is a pretty exciting change.Passwords have been around for long and although the
security of systems has been improved, the convenience of systems hasn't been improved
much.
40 Maybe that never-ending conflict between security and convenience will
be able to take a break once the Trust system comes out.

David is a 22-year-old man.Not having received a college education,he found it
difficult to find a job.He worked at a small company and wasn't paid well.He thought life
was unfair and often complained.
2-7
One day,his boss asked him to go to his office. To his sadness,he was told he didn't
need to come to work again.
That day,David didn't go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another
man.He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time.Having lost his
job,he had no idea what to do.
He walked and walked. Finally he stopped in front of a beautiful house. The house
had a very big garden behind it.He saw an old man sitting in the garden.
“The old man must be a millionaire,”thought David.“How I wish】were him!IfI
were him,I wouldn't have to work and I'd have a large amount of money.I would be the
happiest man in the whole world.
Thinking how poor he was,David was even sadder. He hurriedly walked forward and
found a place and sat there quietly.
Finally,he became hungry and decided to go back home.On his way back home,he
passed the old man's house again. This time the man was sitting in his front yard. When
David passed by him,he noticed that the old man was looking at him.The old man looked
as if he admired him very much.David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire
him?He was so poor while he was so rich.
Finally,David decided to have a talk with the old man.So he stopped and walked to
the old man.
“ello,”he said.
“Hello,”said the old man.
Then they started talking.David told the old man he really admired him.
"You have such a beautiful house.You're so rich!How I wish I were you!"said
David.
Hearing that, the old man smiled and said,"And I admire you, too!I wish I were
you!If I were you,I'd still enjoy my youth.Now I'm so old.Wealth doesn't mean much
tome!”
Paragraph 1:
What the old man said struck David.
