the greatest difficulty that they passed the Cape of Good Hope.By the time they returned to

Although onions taste delicious, watering eyes comes with the process when you cut
them up.Thankfully,Good Housekeeping has offered some tips to prevent you from crying
while you are trying to cut up an onion.
According to the findings of the institute, putting onions in a fridge for 30 minutes
before cutting can prevent the annoying hurt,as the cold stops tear-jerking gas
from being produced.
Another way to reduce the gas released by the onion is to put it in water for a while.
Good Housekeeping recommends:"Cut the end off the onion and then put it straight into a
bowl of water. The water will remove the acid, making you less tearful when you cut it.
When an onion grows,it mixes with sulfur()in the soil to create a special mineral
acid. When the onion is cut into pieces,it reacts with the air and creates a gas.As it reaches
your face, this annoying gas causes the eyes to produce tears.
The root is where the gas is most concentrated,so it is recommended that this part of
the onion be left on as you cut it to avoid uncomfortable eyes.Do this by cutting the
vegetable in half down the middle, then cut off part of one side to create a flat surface.
Then, place the onion with its flat surface down and cut it toward the root.
Also,to reduce the gas's effect on your eyes, cut it next to a window or near a fan so
the gas is blown away from your face. And take care to use a sharp knife;this will make it
easier to move through the vegetable, causing fewer cells to be broken and less gas to be
released as a result.
24.Refrigerating the onion before cutting can
A.change its taste
B.make it easier to cut up
C.avoid generation of the gas
D.help the gas mix more quickly
25.From the fourth paragraph, what will happen when the onion is cut up?
A.Some acid mineral will be lost.
B.The tear mixture will be created
C.The sulfur inside it will pour out.
D.A chemical reaction will produce a gas.
26.What does the underlined word"this"in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Producing more tears.
B.Leaving the root uncut first.
C.Promoting concentration.
D.Making the onion more tasty.
27.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To advise and explain.
B.To examine and analyze.
C.To argue and discuss.
D.To present and compare.

Soda(苏打汽水),while sweet and inexpensive, may not be worth drinking.Sugary
drinks can have many bad health effects, including a 26%greater risk of diabetes (
for regular soda drinkers. And men drinking one can of sugary drinks per day have a 20%
7-2
higher risk of having or dying from a heart attack than those who rarely drink them. The
health effects of drinking soda also affect pre-school children, heightening their chances of
becoming obese at a very young age.According to Harvard School of Public Health, one in
three children in America are obese or overweight, and childhood obesity has tripled
in the last 30 years.Should government get people to reduce their drinking of soda
and sugary drinks due to health effects?
People in San Francisco were given the opportunity to voice their opinion on
Proposition E,which suggested a soda tax ()The tax, which needed to pass with a
two-thirds majority, would have provided money for health and physical education
programs, and the hope was that it would also discourage citizens from buying unhealthy
drinks.Although San Francisco's Proposition E failed to be passed,Berkeley citizens
succeeded in passing the nation's first ever sugary drink tax on their similar Measure D.
People who were for the tax hoped that the price of sugary drinks would discourage
people from buying them.Mexico recently introduced a tax on drinks, which, though not
well received by the public, was successful in reducing the amount of soda bought. After
the tax was put into effect,Mexico's biggest soda production company's sales dropped by
6.4%.
People who were against the tax were concerned about their right to buy whatever
drinks they wanted, without any additional taxes. Those who also disagreed were the
market, the bar,and soda industries, which would possibly lose money from reduced sales
of these drinks because of the added cost. And although the Proposition E tax money was
supposed to go to city-operated programs, some citizens were doubtful about how well this
plan would have been carried out.
28.Harvard School of Public Health found that in America
A.soda drinkers doubled in recent 30 years
B.26%of children are suffering from diabetes
C.the number of obese children has increased greatly
D.young soda drinkers often suffer from heart attacks
29.What do we know about Proposition E?
A.San Francisco citizens accepted it.
B.It was passed successfully in Berkeley.
C.It aimed to reduce the sales of sugary drinks.
D.It was meant to raise money for poor children
30.According to the text, the tax in Mexico
A.helped prevent people buying sugary drinks
B.greatly reduced the production of soda drinks
C.received a warm welcome from the local citizens
D.forced many soda production companies to close down
7-3
31.Those who were against the tax worried that it might
A.not be carried out smoothly
B.affect their rights and interests
C.fail to achieve the expected goal
D.do no good to society or the economy

For Canaan Elementary's second grade in Patchogue,N.Y.today is speech day,and
right now it's Chris Palaez's turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining
dark eyes,he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he's nervous."I'm here to tell you today why you should...should..."Chris trips
on the "-ld",a pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher,
Thomas Whaley,is next to him,whispering support."...Vote for...me..."Except for
some stumbles,Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice
conclusion,Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
A son of immigrants,Chris started learning English a little over three years ago.
Whaley recalls()how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read,Chris
would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a
great teacher who lets you make mistakes."It takes a lot for any student,"Whaley
explains,"especially for a student who is learning English as their new language,to feel
confident enough to say,'I don't know, but I want to know.,
Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked
the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president.
The answer broke his heart.Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to
read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast()about themselves.
"Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities,"Whaley says,"is very difficult for a
child who came into the classroom not feeling confident."
32.What made Chris nervous?
A.Telling a story.
B.Making a speech.
C.Taking a test.
D.Answering a question.
33.What does the underlined word "stumbles"in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Improper pauses.
B.Bad manners.
C.Spelling mistakes.
D.Silly jokes.
34.We can infer that the purpose of Whaley's project is to
A.help students see their own strengths B.assess students'public speaking skills
C.prepare students for their future jobs
D.inspire students'love for politics
35.Which of the following best describes Whaley as a teacher?
A.Humorous.
B.Ambitious.
C.Caring.
D.Demanding.
