Have you ever seen a “wave” of butterflies? Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies (帝王蝶) in North America fly south to spend the winter in Mexico. This journey is about 4,000 kilometres long!
Monarch butterflies are famous for their orange and black wings. They are not strong fliers, but they travel a long way. How do they know where to go? Scientists believe they use the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) to find the direction.
However, monarchs are facing big problems. Their population has dropped by 90% in the past 20 years. One reason is the loss of milkweed (马利筋草). Monarchs lay eggs only on milkweed plants, and caterpillars (幼虫) eat these leaves. But farmers often clear milkweed to grow crops. Another reason is bad weather caused by climate change.
Luckily, many people are helping. Schools and families plant milkweed gardens to give monarchs a safe place to grow. Governments in the US, Canada, and Mexico are working together to protect the butterflies’ path. “Everyone can help,” says a scientist. “Even a small garden can save lives.”
26. Where do monarch butterflies spend the winter?
A. In North America.B. In Mexico.C. In Canada.D. In Africa.
27. How do monarchs find their way during the long journey?
A. By smelling flowers.
B. By following other birds.
C. By using the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field.
D. By remembering the road.
28. Why do monarchs need milkweed plants?
A. They rest under the plants.
B. They get water from the plants.
C. They lay eggs and feed caterpillars on them.
D. They hide from enemies in the plants.
29. What is the main reason for the drop in monarch population?
A. Too many predators.
B. Loss of milkweed and climate change.
C. Pollution in the ocean.
D. Hunters catching them.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Only scientists can save monarchs.
B. Planting milkweed gardens helps.
C. Governments should stop farming.
D. Monarchs will die out soon.

Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest, windiest, and driest continent on Earth. About 98% of it is covered with thick ice. The temperature can drop to -89°C! Because of the extreme cold, almost nothing grows on the land. There are no trees, no bushes, and only two kinds of flowering plants.
Although the land is empty, the ocean around Antarctica is full of life. Whales, seals, and penguins live there. Penguins are the most famous animals in Antarctica. They cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers. Emperor penguins are the largest kind. They stay in Antarctica even in winter. The male penguins keep the eggs warm on their feet while the females go to the sea to find food.
Scientists from all over the world come to Antarctica to study the ice, the weather, and the animals. They want to understand how the Earth’s climate is changing. The ice in Antarctica holds 70% of the world’s fresh water. If all the ice melted, the sea level would rise by about 60 meters!
To protect this special place, many countries signed a treaty (条约) in 1959. It says Antarctica should only be used for peace and science. No military (军事的) activities or mining (采矿) are allowed. Tourists can visit, but they must follow strict rules to keep the environment clean.
31. What is the weather like in Antarctica?
A. Hot and wet.B. Cold, windy and dry.C. Warm and rainy.D. Cool and cloudy.
32. Why can’t plants grow well in Antarctica?
A. Because of the thick ice.
B. Because of the extreme cold.
C. Because of the strong winds.
D. Because of the dry air.
33. What do male emperor penguins do in winter?
A. They swim in the sea to find food.
B. They build nests with stones.
C. They keep the eggs warm on their feet.
D. They fly south for warmth.
34. What will happen if all the ice in Antarctica melts?
A. The sea level will rise greatly.
B. More animals will move there.
C. The weather will become warmer.
D. More plants will grow on the land.
35. What is the main purpose of the Antarctic Treaty?
A. To allow mining activities.
B. To build military bases.
C. To protect the environment for peace and science.
D. To stop scientists from studying there.

六、任务型阅读(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题 (No more than 8 words)。
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are like underwater rainforests. They are home to about 25% of all ocean life, even though they cover only 1% of the ocean floor. Colourful fish, tiny shrimps, and sea turtles all live among the corals.
Corals look like rocks or plants, but they are actually animals. They are made up of thousands of tiny polyps (珊瑚虫). Polyps build hard skeletons (骨骼) to protect themselves. Over hundreds of years, these skeletons form large reefs.
However, coral reefs are in great danger. Climate change makes the ocean water too warm. When water gets too hot, corals turn white and die. This is called coral bleaching (珊瑚白化). Pollution from ships and plastic waste also hurts corals.
We can help save coral reefs. First, we should use less plastic and recycle more. Second, when visiting coral reefs, do not touch or step on them. Third, support groups that protect the ocean. Small actions can make a big difference.

Save the Oceans
The ocean covers over 70% of our planet. It is very important to all living things. It provides us with seafood and produces much of the oxygen we breathe. Besides, it plays a key role in controlling the global climate.
However, our oceans are facing serious problems. Plastic waste is killing fish and birds. Moreover, overfishing has led to a sharp drop in the number of many sea creatures.
As students, we can help. First, say no to plastic bags and use reusable bottles. Second, take part in beach clean-up activities if possible. Let's work together to protect the blue heart of our world!
