Alameda Free Library Announces 2026 Bookmark Design Contest
The Alameda Free Library encourages children, teens, and adults to use their imagination and design a one-of-a-kind bookmark inspired by the 2026 Summer Reading theme “Plant a Seed, Read” or that celebrates books, reading, and libraries. This contest aims to spark creativity and deepen community love for reading, inviting participants of all ages to express their passion for books through art.

Contest forms are available for download on the library’s website or can be picked up from any of the three Alameda Free Library locations. Designs should be original and fit the standard bookmark size to ensure printability.
• Bookmark Design Contest entries must be submitted by May 31 at any Alameda Free Library location. Entries will be judged according to four age categories: ages 5 — 8, 9 — 11, 12 — 18, and 19 +. Winners will be announced in early June, and each winner will receive a certificate and a set of free books as a reward.
• All entries submitted by people under the age of 18 must get the permission of their parents or guardians for the artwork to be entered into the Bookmark Design Contest. Parents are welcome to assist younger participants but should ensure the design reflects the children’s own ideas.

After spending most of his life on commercial cruises (游船), Guillaume Picard is now fighting to keep these vast ships out of the French port of Marseille. The former captain’s new crew is a growing group of activists called “Stop Croisières”, or Stop Cruises, the core of whom now numbers between 50 and 100, says Picard, including lawyers and ecologists. This non-violent organization mainly educates the public through leaflets and prevents the cruises through banners (横幅).
Few people know the sea better than Guillaume Picard. He grew up on a boat in the port of Hyères in southern France, and spent 30 years as a commercial captain, ferrying tourists and containers across the Mediterranean.
Now aged 65, it is with no small note of bitterness that he says, “When I go hiking, I find the mountains are an environment much better preserved.” Picard’s beloved sea is being destroyed, he believes, by cruises. Fifteen years ago, they were a rare sight in Marseille. Now, France’s second city is one of Europe’s busiest cruise ports. Last year, 2.5 million passengers stopped off, according to the port authority, a million more than the year before. Faced with this new reality, Picard couldn’t wait to become the sea’s protector, replacing his captain’s whites with the all-black of a non-violent activist.
For Picard, the switch from boat captain to protector has been a long journey of self-education. He has regrets about his former career as a commercial sailor, but is trying to share his knowledge of the maritime (海运的) world with as many people as possible in the hope that it can be useful. “I certainly feel guilty,” he says. “It’s guilt for having participated in the destruction of life. But maybe that is the engine that makes me an activist now.”
24. What do we learn about the group “Stop Croisières”?
A. It is under Picard’s leadership.
B. It has brought sizable profits.
C. It requires violence in some cases.
D. It consists of former sailors only.
25. Why did Picard feel it an urge to protect the sea?
A. Because he lost trust in the port authority.
B. Because he retired from commercial ships.
C. Because he witnessed a sharp rise in cruises.
D. Because he was tired of hiking in mountains.
26. Which of the following best describes old Picard?
A. Greedy and calculating.
B. Organized and generous.
C. Conservative and dreamy.
D. Responsible and devoted.
27. What does Picard’s story show?
A. Better late than never.
B. Look before you leap.
C. Fortune favors the brave.
D. Opportunity knocks but once.

In 1962, American biologist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, a book that would change how people viewed nature. It warned that the harmful and uncontrolled use of pesticides (杀虫剂) was poisoning the environment and could lead to a silent spring without birdsongs. The book caused immediate debate. Chemical companies campaigned against it strongly, as Carson’s warnings threatened their established and profitable practices. Despite this opposition, the book raised global awareness about how easily nature can be harmed.
Carson’s deep connection to nature began in her childhood in Pennsylvania, where she explored the woods and streams near her home. This passion led her to study biology, which gave her the scientific knowledge she would later use in her writing.
Before Silent Spring, Carson was a marine biologist and writer. She spent four years carefully researching for the book, gathering evidence from scientific studies and talking to farmers and fishermen who had seen the effects of pesticides. She built a strong argument based on data and personal accounts.
Knowing her work would be criticized, Carson believed the public had the right to know the truth. She continued her efforts even while she was sick, and she died in 1964. However, her influence lived on. Silent Spring inspired the modern environmental movement, led to the ban of DDT in the U.S., and made sure her legacy would last as a pioneering environmentalist.
28. Why did chemical companies campaign against Silent Spring?
A. They found numerous scientific errors in the book.
B. Carson refused to share her research data with them.
C. They believed the book would confuse the general public.
D. Carson’s warnings posed a threat to their business interests.
29. How did Carson’s personal background contribute to her environmental work?
A. Her career as a writer provided her with the funding needed for research.
B. Her work as a marine biologist directly exposed her to pesticide pollution.
C. Her family’s farm gave her practical experience in using agricultural chemicals.
D. Her childhood experiences and formal education in biology shaped her advocacy.
30. The text suggests that Carson’s research for the book was characterized by its ________.
A. comprehensiveness and various sources B. reliance on government reports
C. focus on theoretical models D. speed and efficiency
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The scientific process behind banning DDT.
B. The remarkable and lasting impacts of Rachel Carson’s book.
C. The history of pesticide use in the United States.
D. The debate between environmentalists and chemical companies.

For decades “Monday blues” has been a term for the collective groan (叹息) that greets the start of each workweek. Mondays come with higher rates of anxiety, stress and even suicide compared with other days.
The stress and anxiety experienced on Monday seems to ease as the week unfolds. But is the stress and anxiety biologically distinct? Furthermore, could the fleeting changes in mood leave a mark on people’s body even after they stop working? To answer these questions, Professor Tarani Chandola from HKU, looked into the phenomenon, focusing on the stress hormone cortisol (皮质醇).
When we experience a stressor, the brain activates the release of cortisol, which helps us to manage short-term stress. But constant high levels of cortisol disturb the brain and bodily systems, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Chandola studied 3,511 participants aged 50 and older in England, and the results were striking. Older adults who reported feeling anxious on Mondays had, on average, 23 percent higher levels of cortisol up to two months later, compared with those who felt anxious on other days. And the effect was not limited to those still working; retirees who felt anxious on Mondays also showed higher cortisol.
Why might Mondays, in particular, have a powerful effect on the body? One possibility is that the shift from the weekend to the high demands of the week is essentially stressful. Also, some people become anxious on Mondays so routinely that it becomes an automatic bodily response.
For some people, Monday blues are constant stressors. Hospitals may need to plan for the increased risk of heart attacks and other health events on Mondays, especially among older adults. In addition, international practices like meditation, mindfulness, regular physical activity or good sleep might help people adapt to the start of the week and have long-term health benefits. Finally, researchers will need to investigate why some people are resilient (适应力强) to Monday anxiety while others are not. That question might open the door to interventions that help people start the week not just with a groan but with greater resilience.
32. What does the underlined word “fleeting” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Extreme. B. Uncommon. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.
33. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. To define a medical term.
B. To show ways to handle stress.
C. To explain how cortisol helps reduce stress.
D. To reveal how stress harms health biologically.
34. What did Chandola’s study find about Monday anxiety?
A. Its levels are closely related to age. B. It is a lifelong burden for some people.
C. It is the primary challenge people face. D. Its effects are limited among the elderly.
35. Which is one of the author’s suggestions to address Monday blues?
A. Researchers doing further studies. B. Hospitals keeping track of the old.
C. Individuals seeking help from others. D. Companies reducing Monday workloads.

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eighth grade meant a new classroom and a new teacher, but I barely noticed the change. As far as I was concerned, a classroom was a classroom. I longed to be outside, wandering the hills of Tennessee where I grew up.
My teachers didn’t appreciate hidden caves, running creeks(小溪) and wild bears any more than I appreciated maths, history and good handwriting. My report cards always included notes like “Douglas needs to apply himself instead of looking out of the window.”
My parents tried their best with me, but school hadn’t been a big part of their lives either. “He’ll grow out of it,” Daddy said when yet another teacher had concerns about me being too much of a dreamer.
The rough land, the wildlife, and the adventure had more for me to dream about while I was chained(束缚) to my eighth-grade desk. It seemed there were two kinds of people in the world: those who belonged in the classroom and those who belonged in the mountains. The teacher, Miss Cook seemed to know which one I was and had put me as far away from the window as possible.
“Douglas Clark.” The sound of my name snapped(惊醒) me out of my daydream. Miss Cook had appeared at my side without my even knowing. “If this daydreaming continues, I’m going to have to pay a visit to your parents,” she said. I gave her a grin(咧嘴笑). “If you aren’t going to help cook supper, you might as well not come.” I said.
The class laughed, but Miss Cook did not. “That’s very clever,” she said. “I think you should stay after school and share more of your cleverness.”
I sighed. My joke was going to keep me where I didn’t belong. That’s the way it was with teachers. They never missed a chance to remind me of that.
As soon as the bell rang, I took out my notebook to get a head start on writing “I will not be clever in class” 200 times. But Miss Cook had something else in mind. She called me to the front and told me to sit facing her. “I want you to tell me what you love about the world outside that window,” she said.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was so surprised that for a moment I was lost for words.

6. What is the main argument against the “melting pot” metaphor?
A. It is scientifically inaccurate.
B. It implies forced assimilation.
C. It is historically outdated.
7. What alternative metaphor does the woman prefer?
A. A tapestry. B. A mosaic. C. A salad bowl.
【答案】6. B 7. B

【原文】W: I’ve never liked the “melting pot” idea for multicultural societies. It suggests everyone should blend into one homogeneous culture, losing their distinctness.
M: What’s wrong with aiming for unity?
W: True unity shouldn’t require erasure. The “melting pot” historically often meant conforming to a dominant Anglo-Protestant norm in the US. A better metaphor is a “mosaic” or “tapestry” — where individual cultural pieces remain distinct but together create a beautiful, stronger whole. Diversity is the strength, not an ingredient to be melted away.
M: So you value integration that preserves unique identities over assimilation?
W: Exactly. Assimilation is about subtraction; integration is about addition and mutual enrichment.

M: What about... opening a small restaurant?
W: Well, but are you prepared both mentally and financially?
M: I can start from what I have, and I think I’m ready to do it.

W: Really? What happened?
M: On Thursday, I checked the times of the airport bus, but I didn’t notice that they were different at weekends. And I was leaving on Sunday.
W: Oh no!
M: I wanted to take the midnight bus to the airport and my flight was at seven o’clock in the morning, so I arrived at the bus stop at 11:30 p.m.
W: But you were too late.
M: Exactly! The last bus was gone! I didn’t have money for a taxi and the subway wasn’t running either.
W: What did you do?
M: I decided to spend the night in a cafe and I didn’t get any sleep.
W: Oh, dear! So, what time did you get to the airport?
M: I took the first bus the next morning and got there at 5:00. But you’ll never believe what happened! I was there for four hours! We finally took off at 9:00!
W: Oh, no! You must be worn out.

【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. A

【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. B

A. Its levels are closely related to age. B. It is a lifelong burden for some people.
C. It is the primary challenge people face. D. Its effects are limited among the elderly.
35. Which is one of the author’s suggestions to address Monday blues?

第二节 (满分25分)

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I was so surprised that for a moment I was lost for words. No teacher had ever asked me that before. Finally, I started talking about the things that made my heart race: the way sunlight filtered through the trees, the deer that sometimes appeared at dawn, and the secret path that led to a small waterfall. I told her about the little creek that runs through the woods behind my house, where I’d caught tiny fish with my bare hands. “It’s like the world out there has its own stories,” I said, “and I want to hear them all.” Miss Cook listened quietly, nodding from time to time, which made me feel brave enough to keep going. When I finished, she smiled and said, “Why don’t you write that down for me? I’d love to read it.”
I turned in my paper the next day before class and waited for Miss Cook’s reaction. She read it slowly, and when she looked up, her eyes were bright. “Douglas,” she said, “this is wonderful. You have a gift for describing what you see.” She told the class about my writing, which made me feel proud instead of embarrassed. For the first time, I thought maybe school wasn’t just a place to sit and wait for the bell. Miss Cook showed me that the things I loved could be part of learning too, and that was a lesson I’d never forget.
