When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to escape from Ramsgate, the harbor town where I grew up on the Isle of Thanet. It could feel small: the same faces in the same places, and where a new café or gallery was often met with doubt. There was this apparent insistence that life was fine as it was. But for a teenager itching to see more, that lack of curiosity was disheartening.
So I left. I headed north for a four-year academic journey from York to Durham. After university, having played at newspapers, I made the move to London to do it for real. But the reality was tough. I struggled to contribute to various dailies before periods on staff at both magazines and newspapers. In my twenties, I threw myself into city life: sampling Mediterranean restaurants, navigating around on the Tube, and staying out late with friends.
For a while, it was enough. Then it became too much. In and among the sharing plates, I found myself on an unending rat race of moving faster and needing to earn more — just to keep up. Rents in London were pressing, apartments were tiny, yet the dream of owning one felt like a cruel joke.
As I got older, trips back to Thanet opened my eyes to what I had left behind. Mainly, it was the sea. Wide yellow sands and even the touch of salt in the air, ordinary in childhood, suddenly felt appealing. But I also started to miss the beat of small-town life: waving to people on the street, noticing whose garden was overgrown, finding charm even in the pubs I had once dismissed. What’s more, where I’d once hurried to leave, others are now rushing to arrive. Artists, creatives, and technologists have been priced out of London and are pouring to Thanet, bringing new ideas and drive. Now, when I head back home, I feel a mixture of pride and mild wonder: the place I once thought I’d outgrown has had a facelift I wasn’t expecting.
I’ll keep returning to Thanet, with eager willingness. Each visit reminds me that places, like people, can grow without losing their essence. I’ve come to love Thanet as more than just the home I left; it is now the place it continues to become.
4. Why did the author want to leave Ramsgate?
A. It offered few job opportunities. B. It lacked modern entertainment.
C. It stuck to values he disagreed with. D. It failed to satisfy his desire to explore.
5. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s life in London?
A. Rich in possibilities. B. Socially diverse.
C. Filled with challenges. D. Financially stressful.
6. What can we learn about the author’s bond with Thanet over time?
A. It remains stable and strong. B. It is influenced by public opinions.
C. It shifts from rejection to reconnection. D. It is shaped by his childhood experience.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Sea in Memory B. Four Years Up North
C. The Hometown Out of Reach D. A Growing Place, a Growing Me
D 5. C 6. C 7. D

Artists, creatives, and technologists have been priced out of London and are pouring to Thanet, bringing new ideas and drive. Now, when I head back home, I feel a mixture of pride and mild wonder: the place I once thought I’d outgrown has had a facelift I wasn’t expecting.
通读全文,结合最后一段中“Each visit reminds me that places, like people, can grow without losing their essence. I’ve come to love Thanet as more than just the home I left; it is now the place it continues to become. (每一次到访都提醒我,地方和人一样,可以在不失去本质的情况下成长。我已经不再仅仅把萨尼特岛当作我离开的家;它现在是它继续成为的地方)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者离开家乡去伦敦打拼,历经挑战后回到家乡,重新认识并爱上家乡的故事,表达了作者对家乡和自身成长的深刻感悟。故D项“A Growing Place, a Growing Me(一个成长的地方,一个成长的我)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选D项。
C
Online shopping offers tremendous convenience but also an overwhelming number of options. To navigate these choices, many of us rely on online reviews and ratings, believing they provide reliable information about products. But is this trust justified?
Bart de Langhe, a behavioral scientist and marketing professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, faced this question when shopping for a car seat for his newborn son. Confronted with a choice between a $300 car seat from a well-known brand and a $50 car seat from an unknown brand, he turned to online reviews. The positive reviews for the $300 car seat convinced him to buy it. Later, he discovered that Consumer Reports rated the $50 car seat higher in crash protection and ease of use than the $300 one.
Curious, de Langhe teamed up with colleagues at the University of Colorado in Boulder to compare online reviews with performance reviews. They did this for 1,272 products in 120 categories — including car seats, bike helmets, blood pressure monitors, headphones, sunscreen and smoke alarms — which could be objectively assessed. Their study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found a very weak link between positive online reviews and actual product performance.
As de Langhe explained in Science Daily, “The likelihood that an item with a higher user rating performs objectively better than an item with a lower user rating is only 57 percent. A correspondence of 50 percent would be random, so user ratings provide very little insight about objective product performance.” He further elaborated in a TEDxESADE Talk that many high-rated products perform poorly and vice versa. This distinction is partly due to fake reviews and the influence of brand reputation, packaging and price on user opinions. Only a small group of consumers — the ones holding the most extreme positive and negative opinions — tend to leave reviews. This is why we often see a lot of 1- and 5-star reviews on products.
De Langhe recommends relying less on the recommendations of other consumers. This doesn’t mean we should stop reading reviews altogether, but we should avoid stressing over minor rating differences and feel less compelled to read every review before making a purchase.
8. What motivated de Langhe to research the reliability of online reviews?
A. His interest in consumer psychology. B. His doubt about certain famous brands.
C. His cooperation with Consumer Reports. D. His own frustrating shopping experience.
9. What did the study reveal about online reviews?
A. They were definitely objective. B. They barely reflected product quality.
C. They mostly featured neutral opinions. D. They were heavily influenced by companies.
10. Why do online comments fail to present a full picture?
A. False comments are posted by some sellers.
B. Brand reputation has little impact on user ratings.
C. Most people don’t care about product performance.
D. Buyers with extreme views are more likely to leave reviews.
11. According to the last paragraph, what is de Langhe’s attitude towards online reviews?
A. Cautiously objective. B. Completely critical.
C. Totally indifferent. D. Unconditionally supportive.
D 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第二段“Bart de Langhe, a behavioral scientist and marketing professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, faced this question when shopping for a car seat for his newborn son.
根据第三段中“Their study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found a very weak link between positive online reviews and actual product performance. (他们发表在《消费者研究杂志》上的研究发现,正面的在线评论与实际产品性能之间的联系非常微弱)”可知,在线评论与实际产品性能之间的联系非常微弱,几乎不反映产品质量。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Only a small group of consumers — the ones holding the most extreme positive and negative opinions — tend to leave reviews. This is why we often see a lot of 1- and 5-star reviews on products. (只有一小部分消费者——持有最极端正面和负面意见的消费者——倾向于留下评论。这就是为什么我们经常在产品上看到许多1星和5星评价)”可知,在线评论无法呈现全貌是因为持有极端观点的买家更可能留下评论。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“De Langhe recommends relying less on the recommendations of other consumers. This doesn’t mean we should stop reading reviews altogether, but we should avoid stressing over minor rating differences and feel less compelled to read every review before making a purchase. (De Langhe建议减少对其他消费者推荐的信赖。这并不意味着我们应该完全停止阅读评论,但我们应该避免为细微的评分差异感到压力,也不要在购买前觉得必须阅读每一条评论)”可知,De Langhe建议减少对其他消费者推荐的信赖,避免因细微的评分差异而感到压力,说明他对在线评论持谨慎客观的态度。

When acoustic (声音的) ecologist Marcus Maeder first placed a listening device in the soil, he was unprepared for what he heard. All sorts of strange sounds flooded his headphones, revealing a dynamic world hidden beneath the seemingly quiet ground.
Ecologists have long known that soil is home to vast biodiversity. In just a single cup of dirt, researchers have counted up to 100 million life forms, ranging from tiny bacteria to larger insects and earthworms. These underground creatures play a vital role in cycling nutrients and supporting life on Earth.
Now, in a relatively new scientific field, known as soil bioacoustics, a growing number of biologists are collecting underground noises to open a window into this complex and mysterious world. They’ve found that something as simple as a metal nail pushed into the dirt can become a sort of listening post if equipped with the right sensors. The acoustic data helps scientists answer fundamental questions, like how creatures communicate or when plants grow their roots.
Beyond basic research, underground acoustics could also help us take better care of the environment and detect pests (害虫) like root-feeding insects, which cause billions of dollars in damage annually. By identifying the distinctive sounds of these pests, scientists hope to develop more eco-friendly strategies that reduce the need for widespread chemical use.
However, scientists are also recording less welcome sounds: human-made noises, such as construction or traffic, are detectable underground. More concerning is the finding that in intensively farmed areas, the natural sounds of soil life are fading, indicating a worrying decline in biodiversity. To help more people realize what we’re in danger of losing, Maeder has started a citizen science project that lends people in Switzerland acoustic sensors to listen for underground activities themselves. The recordings are being gathered into a national library of soil sounds with the hope of raising awareness. Demand so far is high, Maeder says. “The sensors are always booked.”
12. What is the main focus of soil bioacoustics?
A. Studying underground life. B. Tracking plant growth.
C. Monitoring noise pollution. D. Capturing natural sounds.
13. What is a practical application of soil bioacoustics according to the text?
A. Boosting farm output. B. Enabling targeted pest control.
C. Improving traditional farming. D. Eliminating the need for chemical use.
14. What does the high demand for sensors in Maeder’s project suggest?
A. Public interest in soil ecology. B. Severe decline in soil health.
C. Easy access to monitoring tools. D. Need to increase project funding.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Soil Is No Longer Silent? B. Uncovering an Underground World
C. How Human Noise Affects Biodiversity? D. Listening to the Hidden Sounds of Soil
A 13. B 14. A 15. D

We all experience moments like this: a friend doesn’t reply to your message, or someone walks right past you without noticing. Most people move on quickly, but for those who are sensitive to rejection, these small moments feel heavy. ____16____.
Rejection sensitivity means often expecting others to reject you, even when there is no real sign of it. People who think this way pay too much attention to others’ words, tone, or silence. A late reply can feel like “They don’t like me,” and a serious face may seem like “They’re upset with me.” Because of this fear, they try to protect themselves by avoiding eye contact, keeping quiet, or pulling away. ____17____ — sometimes creating the very rejection they were afraid of. The good news is that gentle, intentional habits can help.
Challenge your first reaction. Feelings are not facts. When your mind jumps to the worst explanation, pause and ask: What else could this mean?____18____. Try writing down at least two neutral (中性的) possibilities before accepting the negative one. This simple practice helps calm emotional overreaction.
Express your needs openly. People with rejection sensitivity often hide their feelings, hoping others will understand without being told. ____19____. Try speaking clearly and kindly: “When I didn’t hear back, I felt a bit unsure. Could we talk later?” Honest communication builds trust and reduces unnecessary worry.
____20____. If someone reaches out to you, offer a small sign of openness — a smile, a short reply, or a simple “thank you.” These small gestures show that you welcome connection. Over time, they help soften the habit of pulling away.
A. Pursue stronger bonds with others
B. But silence easily causes confusion
C. Respond warmly when others show care
D. They are always searching for ways to relieve their anxiety
E. Sadly, this distance can make them seem cold or unfriendly
F. They may immediately assume something is wrong with them
G. Perhaps the other person is busy, stressed, or simply distracted
F 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. C
上文“We all experience moments like this: a friend doesn’t reply to your message, or someone walks right past you without noticing. Most people move on quickly, but for those who are sensitive to rejection, these small moments feel heavy.(我们每个人都会遇到这样的时刻:朋友不回复你的消息,或者有人径直走过你身旁却毫无察觉。大多数人很快就会忘掉这些事,但对于那些对被拒绝特别敏感的人来说,这些微小的时刻却会让人感到沉重)”指出拒绝敏感者会因小事感到难受。空处承接前文,说明这类人的具体心理反应。选项F“They may immediately assume something is wrong with them(他们可能会立刻认为是自己出了问题)”具体解释了拒绝敏感者面对小事时的负面自我归因,与前文形成顺承关系,符合语境。故选F。
【17题详解】
上文“Because of this fear, they try to protect themselves by avoiding eye contact, keeping quiet, or pulling away.(由于这种恐惧,他们试图通过避免眼神交流、保持沉默或疏远来保护自己)”说明拒绝敏感者会刻意与人保持距离。空后“sometimes creating the very rejection they were afraid of.(有时反而造成了他们所害怕的拒绝)”指出这种行为带来的负面结果。 E“Sadly, this distance can make them seem cold or unfriendly(可悲的是,这种距离会让他们看起来冷漠或不友好)”中的“this distance”指代前文的疏远行为,点明其带来的负面印象,与后文结果相呼应,符合语境。故选E。
上文“When your mind jumps to the worst explanation, pause and ask: What else could this mean?(当你的脑海中冒出最坏的解释时,停下来问问自己:这还可能意味着什么?)” G“Perhaps the other person is busy, stressed, or simply distracted(也许对方只是忙碌、有压力或只是分心了)”具体列举了中性的合理原因,是对前文问题的直接回答,与后文“neutral possibilities”相呼应,符合语境。故选G。
上文“People with rejection sensitivity often hide their feelings, hoping others will understand without being told.(有拒绝敏感的人常常隐藏自己的感受,希望别人不用被告知就能理解)”说明这类人习惯沉默隐藏情绪。
空后“If someone reaches out to you, offer a small sign of openness — a smile, a short reply, or a simple “thank you.”(如果有人向你主动示好,给出一点友好的表示 —— 一个微笑、一句简短的回复或一句简单的“谢谢”)”介绍了对他人的主动示好做出积极回应的做法。 C“Respond warmly when others show care(当他人表达关心时热情回应)”概括了本段核心建议,与后文具体的回应行为相呼应,符合语境。故选C。

On a sunny weekend, 17-year-old Tom joined a school camping trip to a remote island. Tom, an enthusiastic photographer, was also a bit of a loner who often preferred exploring on his own. He had taken a basic survival skills course but had never truly faced a real-life emergency.
As the group stepped into the thick underbrush, the air was heavy with the scent of damp moss and wildflowers, and Tom couldn’t contain his excitement. Mr. Wilson, an experienced outdoors teacher, paused every few minutes to warn everybody to stay close. He took out a bundle (捆) of small red flags. Every 20 steps, he tied a flag to a low-hanging branch or a sturdy fern (蕨), saying, “The flags, along with the flowing stream nearby, are your lifelines. They’ll boost your chance of survival.” Most students watched carefully, but Tom, half nodded absentmindedly, half distracted by the singing birds, gradually falling behind the group.
A moment later, Tom was photographing the mouth-watering Acai berries (巴西莓) covering the mountain forests when he heard the rolling thunder. Looking around, he realized there was no one around — he was all alone. Quickly Tom stuffed his camera into his bag and tried to catch up with others. But the sky darkened suddenly and a fierce wind tore through the trees with the heavy rain pouring down. His phone already low on battery died completely because he pressed it in a wild manner to call for help. Tom struggled through the mud, his sneakers covered with dirt and water dropping from his hair.
As night fell, the downpour stopped but the temperature dropped below freezing, and the cold bit through his clothes. Heart pounding heavily, Tom was in a complete panic, with an overwhelming longing to go home.
注意:

Paragraph2:After hours of wandering and searching, Tom heard shouts in the distance.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph1: Hungry and exhausted, Tom felt his strength slipping away. Panic nearly overwhelmed him until the survival lesson flashed across his mind suddenly. He calmed himself down and began to search carefully for the small red flags Mr. Wilson had tied along the path. Rubbing his frozen hands, he trudged forward slowly through thick bushes, eyes scanning every branch and fern eagerly. Luckily, several faint red flags came into sight from time to time, which guided him to move along the correct route steadily.
Paragraph2: After hours of wandering and searching, Tom heard shouts in the distance. He took a deep breath and shouted back at the top of his lungs to respond. Soon, Mr. Wilson and other classmates appeared in front of him, holding flashlights. Seeing Tom muddy and trembling with cold, they hurried to wrap him in warm blankets. Tom apologized sincerely for wandering off alone. This terrifying experience taught him a valuable lesson: he should follow instructors’ instructions closely during outdoor activities instead of wandering separately out of personal curiosity.
