18. Where does kiwifruit originate?
A. China. B. New Zealand. C. America.
19. When did the company lose its trademark “zipper”?
A. In 1851. B. In 1923. C. In 1930.
20. Which is the largest producer of zippers?
A. A US company. B. A British company. C. A Japanese company.
【答案】18. A 19. C 20. C
【解析】
【原文】W: How do things get their names? That is not always an easy question to answer. There are many different ways. Today let's look at how two things got their names.
Many people associate kiwifruit with New Zealand, but this fruit is actually native to China. China is the top producer of kiwifruit. A teacher from New Zealand took it from China in 1904. Then in 1959, a New Zealand company wanted to ship the fruit abroad. They named it kiwi after their national bird. By the 1970s, everyone was calling the fruit by that name.
Next, let's talk about zippers. What would we do without zippers? This clever little invention is used to fasten many different things. Zippers were developed by several people over many years starting in 1851. During that time, the device had a number of names. Finally in 1923, an American company named it "zipper” and trademarked it. The word zipper comes from the sound it makes when it opens or closes. However, the company lost its trademark in 1930 when zipper became popular as a general term. Nowadays ninety percent of zippers are produced by a Japanese company called YKK.

Woodpeckers (啄木鸟) hopped into my life in an unexpected place. As a young boy of eight or nine, I peered impatiently through the kitchen window into the backyard, waiting for the rain to stop so I might escape my tame suburban home to a wilder place where I could watch more than American Robins (知更鸟).
Suddenly, a bird caught my attention. As it bounced closer, the bright red mustache, and veins of orange on the tail and wings revealed it was a male woodpecker! With what seemed like an explosion of red feathers, he was gone. From that moment on, I read everything I could about woodpeckers. Instantly I became a woodpecker enthusiast.
Since that day, the call of the woodpecker has led me on many journeys from my backyard to distant continents and inspired me to rise before the sun so that their syncopated (切分节奏的) drumming might allow me to find them, follow them, and learn about their mysterious lives before they disappear back into the trees. My fascination has only grown over the years as I noticed that no matter where I was in North America, as long as there were large trees and surrounding natural landscape, there was at least one species of woodpecker to trigger my wonder at the richness around me and the woodpecker’s role in enhancing it.
My book Woodpecker contains an exploration of the lives of the forty-one species of woodpeckers in North America. In telling the stories of these woodpeckers, I focus my lens, narrative, and anecdotes on the species and behaviors that are most representative, while also highlighting interesting exceptions and contrasts. I hope that by sharing intimate images and stories from the more secreted moments of their life histories, I can motivate people to better appreciate their critical role in enhancing our natural world and perhaps inspire the long-term protection of these birds and the habitats that they rely upon.
24. What do we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A. He was bored of bird-watching. B. He hated leaving his suburban home.
C. He longed to see more varied wildlife. D. He loved American Robins very much.

26. Why has the author’s love for woodpeckers grown?
A. They lead him to many different places.
B. Their distinctive sounds have amazed him.
C. They enable him to uncover the world’s mysteries.
D. Their widespread presence helps him see nature’s richness.
27. What is the key strength of the author’s book?
A. It centers on rare woodpecker species.
B. It covers all woodpecker species in detail.
C. It reveals the threats to woodpeckers’ survival.
D. It features typical species and interesting exceptions.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. D 27. D

Have you ever faced a very hard task? Maybe it was a big test, a speech, or a difficult project. This happens to everyone. A wise woman named Carol Gilligan once said, “Where there is resistance (抵制), there is obstacle (障碍); where there is acceptance, the obstacle disappears.” This sounds strange, doesn’t it? How can just accepting a problem make it go away? The answer lies in how our minds work.
Resistance is when we fight against reality. For example, if you are afraid of math and don’t want to practice, you are resisting. This makes the problem seem bigger and scarier. Your mind gets stuck in worry and fear, wasting energy that you could use to solve the problem. Studies show that this stress makes it harder to think clearly.
Acceptance is different. It means looking at the problem clearly and saying, “Okay, this is hard, but I can handle it.” You don’t judge yourself for finding it difficult. This stops the emotional rollercoaster (过山车). When you accept that a task is hard, you can stop worrying and start making a plan. For instance, if you accept that math takes time to learn, you can take it step by step. The fear goes away, and the problem becomes smaller. This idea works in many areas of life. An athlete who accepts being nervous can use that energy to focus. A student who accepts making mistakes can learn faster. Changing from resistance to acceptance is a skill. You can learn it by calming down and making a plan.
So, next time you face a hard thing, remember Gilligan’s words. Take a deep breath, accept the feeling, and start working. You will find that the obstacle is not as big as it seemed.
28. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Ignoring challenges to save energy. B. Avoiding challenges to reduce stress.
C. Fearing challenges to stay motivated. D. Accepting challenges to overcome them.
29. What happens when we resist a difficult task?
A. We solve it quickly with focus. B. We feel calm and ready to act.
C. We learn new skills to handle it. D. We waste energy on worry and fear.
30. What does acceptance allow us to do?
A. Plan and take action effectively. B. Avoid the task completely.
C. Feel more stressed about the task. D. Doubt our ability to succeed.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show that resistance is always better. B. To describe how to avoid difficult tasks.
C. To encourage readers to accept challenges. D. To explain why challenges are impossible.
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. C
【解析】

Chinook salmon (三文鱼) and their habitats in Seattle’s Thornton Creek suffered severely due to urban expansion, causing flash floods and biodiversity loss. Despite restoration efforts, the once-abundant salmon all but disappeared.
During a conference, biologist Katherine Lynch proposed rebuilding the creek’s missing “liver” — the hyporheic zone, a layer of wet sediment (沉积物), small stones and tiny creatures beneath the streambed that facilitates water mixing and oxygen delivery to salmon eggs — damaged by urbanization, noting that most Seattle restoration efforts had overlooked this vital zone.
Teamed with engineer Mike Hrachovec, Lynch redesigned Thornton Creek. They strategically placed logs at precise angles to create small waterfalls and still pockets, generating pressure to force water into the hyporheic zone. These accurately placed logs and rocks, known as “hyporheic structures”, also create pockets of slow water that provide safe shelters for immature fish — all meant to emulate features of a natural stream. Subsequent data analysis confirmed the stream functioned as Lynch’s team — and nature — intended.
But was the stream also supporting life? Given that the stone and sand positioned were sterile (贫瘠的) territory, Lynch thought that a biological jumpstart might be necessary and that the return of life to restored creeks relied on organisms migrating from healthy upstream habitats. So her team tried another ground-breaking move: inoculating (接种) the engineered hyporheic zone with microbes (微生物), which quickly populated the areas. But even though the number of individuals was high, the biodiversity was relatively low. Scientists are investigating reasons for the poor survival of introduced species, including potential factors like donor stream differences and premature inoculation before vegetation establishment.
The restoration successfully prevented flooding and stabilized water flow. Most notably, Chinook salmon returned to lay eggs in former zones. Lynch noted, “This success shows small urban creek restorations can revitalize functioning ecosystems.”
32. Why did Katherine Lynch propose rebuilding the hyporheic zone of Thornton Creek?
A. It can ease sediment-related issues in the creek.
B. It provides more oxygen than creek life needed.
C. Its damage was severe due to insufficient attention.
D. It serves salmon survival yet was ignored in restoration.
33. What does the underlined word “emulate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Imitate. B. Record. C. Analyze. D. Replace.
34. What can be inferred about inoculating the zone with microbes?
A. It introduced essential vegetation. B. It restored the original biodiversity.
C. It increased the quantity of microbes. D. It sourced microbes from upstream habitats.
35. What can be concluded from the project?
A. Bio-intervention works well in ecosystem restoration.
B. Restoring the hyporheic zone aids ecological recovery.
C. Microbe inoculation is the focus of the whole project.
D. Migrating organisms contribute most to the restoration.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了通过修复溪流潜流层帮助三文鱼回归、恢复城市生态的科学实践。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“During a conference, biologist Katherine Lynch proposed rebuilding the creek’s missing “liver” — the hyporheic zone, a layer of wet sediment (沉积物), small stones and tiny creatures beneath the streambed that facilitates water mixing and oxygen delivery to salmon eggs — damaged by urbanization, noting that most Seattle restoration efforts had overlooked this vital zone.(在一次会议上,生物学家凯瑟琳・林奇提出重建这条溪流缺失的 “肝脏”——潜流层。它是河床下一层由湿沉积物、小石子和微小生物构成的区域,能促进水体混合并为三文鱼卵输送氧气。这一区域因城市化遭到破坏,而西雅图大多数修复工作都忽视了这个关键地带)”可知,凯瑟琳·林奇提议重建桑顿溪的潜流带是因为潜流带对三文鱼的生存至关重要,但在之前的恢复工作中被忽视了。故选D。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“These accurately placed logs and rocks, known as “hyporheic structures”, also create pockets of slow water that provide safe shelters for immature fish — all meant to emulate features of a natural stream.(这些精确放置的原木和岩石,被称为“潜流带结构”,也形成了缓慢的水流区域,为未成熟的鱼类提供了安全的庇护所——所有这些都是为了emulate自然溪流的特征)”可知,原木和岩石的放置是为了模仿自然溪流的特征,因此emulate在此处的意思是“模仿”。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“So her team tried another ground-breaking move: inoculating (接种) the engineered hyporheic zone with microbes (微生物), which quickly populated the areas. But even though the number of individuals was high, the biodiversity was relatively low.(因此,她的团队尝试了另一项开创性的举措:用微生物接种人工潜流带,这些微生物迅速在该区域繁殖。但是,尽管个体数量很高,生物多样性却相对较低)”可知,用微生物接种该区域增加了微生物的数量。故选C。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The restoration successfully prevented flooding and stabilized water flow. Most notably, Chinook salmon returned to lay eggs in former zones. Lynch noted,“This success shows small urban creek restorations can revitalize functioning ecosystems.”(恢复工作成功地防止了洪水,稳定了水流。最值得注意的是,奇努克三文鱼回到了以前的区域产卵。林奇指出:“这一成功表明,小型城市溪流的恢复可以重振功能生态系统。”)”可知,恢复潜流带有助于生态恢复。故选B。

Touching movies, stressful events at home or work, and even good news like a wedding or a baby might bring on the waterworks. ____36____ But you might not know that crying can have a big effect on your body and mind — here’s how.
● Crying relieves stress.
Humans are the only species to weep from emotions, but scientists still don’t know exactly how the physical act of crying is connected to our feelings. ____37____ Maybe it helps relieve the physical tension of feeling upset. In other words, crying occurs as our body returns from an aroused “fight or flight” state to a calm “rest and digest” state.
● ____38____
You might think that crying would make you feel better if it means your stress is relieved — it does, sometimes. “In surveys about two-thirds of people generally report feeling better after crying,” says Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor at the University of South Florida. In many cases, however, the better mood after having cried is the consequence of receiving emotional support and comfort.
● Crying strengthens bonds.
When we communicate with others through tears, we are revealing our own vulnerability (脆弱). “With supportive people, it can create an increased feeling of bonding and connection,” Dr. Orloff says. “You trust the person enough to cry around them.” ____39____ And this can promote an empathetic response and an emotional connection.
● Crying helps us get what we want.
Tears can be a way to cause a specific reaction that works in our favor. ____40____ Even if we don’t mean to control others, our crying may have the result of easing anger and making others feel guilty or more willing to bend to our will.
A. Crying boosts mood.
B. Crying lets you release emotions in private.
C. Sometimes, you just need to let the tears flow.
D. Why do we cry when we’re sad (and sometimes happy)?
E. Crying is, therefore, a signal that we feel close to someone.
F. So, it may take a while before crying makes you feel better.
G. Anyone who’s ever cried after getting pulled over for speeding knows that.
【答案】36. C 37. D 38. A 39. E 40. G

根据上文“Touching movies, stressful events at home or work, and even good news like a wedding or a baby might bring on the waterworks.(感人的电影、家庭或工作中的压力事件,甚至像婚礼或新生儿这样的好消息,都可能引发情绪波动)”以及后文“But you might not know that crying can have a big effect on your body and mind — here’s how.(但你可能不知道,哭泣会对你的身体和心理产生重大影响——具体是这样)”可知,第一段开头提到多种场景都会引发哭泣,空后转折指出人们大多不了解哭泣对身心的好处,C项“有时候你就是需要让眼泪流出来”符合上下文衔接。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Humans are the only species to weep from emotions, but scientists still don’t know exactly how the physical act of crying is connected to our feelings.(人类是唯一会因情绪而流泪的物种,但科学家至今仍不清楚哭泣这一物理行为与我们的情感之间究竟存在怎样的联系)”以及后文“Maybe it helps relieve the physical tension of feeling upset. In other words, crying occurs as our body returns from an aroused “fight or flight” state to a calm “rest and digest” state.(也许这有助于缓解因情绪低落而产生的身体紧张。换句话说,哭泣是身体从被唤醒的“战斗或逃跑”状态恢复到平静的“休息与消化”状态时的一种表现)”可知,第二段提到科学家尚不清楚哭泣和情绪的具体关联,空后给出“哭泣帮助缓解情绪紧张”的可能解释,D项“为什么我们悲伤时、有时开心也会哭?”引出问题衔接后文解释。
【38题详解】
根据后文“You might think that crying would make you feel better if it means your stress is relieved — it does, sometimes. “In surveys about two-thirds of people generally report feeling better after crying,” says Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor at the University of South Florida. In many cases, however, the better mood after having cried is the consequence of receiving emotional support and comfort.(你可能会认为,如果哭泣意味着压力得到了缓解,那么哭泣会让你感觉更好——有时确实如此。南佛罗里达大学教授乔纳森·罗滕伯格表示:“在调查中,三分之二的人普遍报告称,哭泣后心情变好了”然而,在许多情况下,哭泣后情绪好转其实是由于获得了情感支持和安慰的结果)”可知,第三段整段内容围绕“哭泣后大多人会感觉更好、改善心情”展开,A项“哭泣提升情绪”符合段落小标题要求。
【39题详解】
根据上文“When we communicate with others through tears, we are revealing our own vulnerability (脆弱). “With supportive people, it can create an increased feeling of bonding and connection,” Dr. Orloff says. “You trust the person enough to cry around them.”(当我们通过泪水与他人交流时,实际上是在展现自身的脆弱。

Sally’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning seventeen was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and her parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached.
“Are you going to have a birthday party this year?” Jane asked, sensing Sally’s sadness.
“No,” Sally sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal (隐藏) her immense disappointment and stress, but Jane saw through her pretence (假装) easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretly. Curious, Sally went over to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was startled by Jane’s strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
“What did she say?” Sally asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged and walked away with Jane, leaving Sally standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
What is happening? Sally wondered anxiously. Are they keeping something from me?
As Sally’s birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with her other classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. Jane has never kept secrets from me before, Sally thought. Her heart fell. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her? And what were they hiding?
Paragraph 1: On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Tears sprang from Sally’s eyes and her face broke into a radiant smile.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness. Confused, she reached for the light switch, but before her fingers touched it, a warm glow flickered on — dozens of candles lined the desks, casting soft shadows on her classmates’ smiling faces. “Surprise!” they shouted in unison. Jane stepped forward, holding a homemade cake with “17” written in pink frosting. “We knew you couldn’t have a party, so we brought the party to you,” she said, her eyes sparkling. Sarah handed her a jar filled with handwritten notes, each one a memory or a wish from their friends.
Paragraph 2: Tears sprang from Sally’s eyes and her face broke into a radiant smile. She hugged Jane tightly, feeling the weight of stress melt away. “I thought you were avoiding me,” she whispered. Jane laughed, wiping Sally’s tears. “We were just planning! Everyone chipped in — homemade snacks, decorations, even your favorite playlist.” As the class sang “Happy Birthday,” Sally blew out the candles, her heart full. In that moment, she realized the best gift wasn’t a grand party, but friends who cared enough to turn her sadness into the sweetest surprise.

The National Gallery has launched a new exhibition called Art on Your Doorstep, taking life-sized versions of some masterpieces to communities around the UK. This project works with organisations across the UK to help share masterpieces from the nation’s collection with communities beyond Trafalgar Square. It will be reaching all four nations of the UK, travelling to a total of 12 partners. The National Gallery offers up to 30 printed reproductions of masterpieces from its collection each time.
The first exhibition started in Stoke-on-Trent on 4 June 2025. Fifteen printed masterpieces were installed in an outdoor exhibition in Bethesda Gardens, opposite The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, as part of the city’s Centenary celebrations. Right now the free outdoor exhibition is running in Croydon, London.
In each location, the local community has helped choose the paintings to be displayed. Croydon’s exhibition features 30 paintings. Caterina Loriggio, who works on cultural events in Croydon, said that they ran workshops with residents to choose the artworks. The workshops asked questions such as “Which painting reminds you of Croydon?”, and residents chose from different paintings for their answer. Loriggio said, “What was interesting was how many people chose the same things.”
Every year, the National Gallery partners with organisations and audiences across the UK in a range of different and innovative ways. They want to ensure that everyone in the UK can engage with their national collection. Over the past years they have partnered with a number of organisations through a range of projects including their flagship Masterpiece Tour, contemporary Artist-in-Residence programme, National Treasures, Visits tour and Take One Picture programme.

25. The author’s fascination with woodpeckers began with ______.
A. his determination to make a change B. a single, unexpected childhood sighting
C. some research on their beautiful feathers D. books that introduced him to woodpeckers

D

Paragraph 2: Tears sprang from Sally’s eyes and her face broke into a radiant smile.
