Dear James,
Good news! The International Students Service Center is organizing a video shooting contest with a theme of “My China Surprise”, and I strongly recommend you give it a shot.
All foreign students living in China are welcome to share their unexpected adventures, surprising moments and cultural revelations through the lens. There are no strict restrictions on the topics, allowing participants ample freedom to capture whatever they find engaging and funny. The deadline for submissions is Jun. 18th, 2026, and there are very exciting prizes awaiting the winners. Considering your rich life, remarkable creativity and considerable expertise in photography, your video will definitely make a very competitive entry.
I’m looking forward to your excellent performance in the contest! Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
I realized my mistake. As I sat alone listening to Chopin that evening, his Nocturne’s gentle tune reminded me of our friendship’s harmony. My sharp words echoed in my mind—calling rock “noise” was unfair. Music, like friendship, shouldn’t be judged by its volume but by the feelings it carries. Tom’s passion for rock mirrored my love for classical music; neither deserved disrespect. Swallowing my pride, I grabbed my phone and typed, “I’ll go to talk with you. I owe you an apology.”
With a nervous heart, I pressed the doorbell of Tom’s house. The door swung open, revealing Tom’s hesitant face. Before I could speak, he said, “I’m sorry too! I shouldn’t have stormed off.” Relief washed over me. “No, I was wrong to criticize your music.” I admitted. He smiled, pulling out his headphones and said “Wanna try my favorite rock song? I’ll explain why it moves me.” As the energetic tunes filled my ears, I finally heard the passion he treasured and understood that true friendship harmonizes different rhythms.

I don’t remember when my love of the protected Great Bear Rain forest began — it’s something that’s always been there, even though I haven’t spent longer than a month there in one go. I grew up in a small village by the sea and planned to study marine biology and live out on the water. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, my lack of scientific talent quickly put paid to that idea, but the love of nature remained and has been an anchor (精神支柱) in my life and in my writing.
The Great Bear Rainforest is not only vast, splendid and wild but also friendly, fun and diverse. I travelled there by myself at the age of 20, planning to spend my 21st birthday camping and hiking in the forests.
I woke up on my birthday in a tent on the edge of the water. Behind me, the trees of this largely untouched wilderness emerged. Endless carpets of pointed trees reached right down to a thin rocky shore. It seemed there was no way in. This wilderness held its secrets close. Stepping from the beach into the forest, I immediately sensed the history of the area — it felt ancient, and it was impossible not to be humbled.
With a guide for safety, I hiked a few miles through the wilderness. The sounds of the forest were everywhere. Birds sang. Insects buzzed. Something bigger moved through the undergrowth and my guide stopped dead and listened. My heart was in my mouth. Then, after some invisible signal, my guide relaxed, and we went on.
We continued the hike and emerged onto a cliff with the most breathtaking view I’ve ever seen. I was from terror to wonder in only a few hundred steps. It was that sense of unsettled ground — of shifting emotion, secrets and awe, beauty and fear — that’s fed my writing across four books, none more so than Children of the Sun, and instilled in me a lifelong love of the wild.
28. What does the underlined phrase “put paid to” in Paragraph 1 mean?

During the rosy years of elementary school, I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.
Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables’ plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there’s the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.
Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein’s studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are “most likely to engage in dangerous and risky behavior.”
In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys. “We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us.”
Dr. Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date — sharing, kindness, openness — carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others.
In analyzing his and other research, Dr. Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. “Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage,” he said.

While technology addicts teens to their devices, they are not helpless against the draw of it. Here are five ways educators can support their students’ digital well-being.

Talk about how technology can increase feelings of anxiety. The decline in youth mental health is associated with an increase in social media use. 37 We can help our students by allowing them to consider the benefits of technology and then to think about changing the habits that aren’t serving their well-being.
38 Social media can bring the feeling: “All my friends have better lives than me”. Plus, design features like “read receipts” can lead to teens knowing their messages have been seen and stressing about why friends haven’t yet replied. These are classic examples of thinking traps. Identifying them can help teens get rid of some negative thoughts.
Uncover the ways that AI can play a role in misinformation. AI is rapidly transforming the world. Recommendation algorithms (算法), which determine what we do and do not see on our feeds and in our search results, can have very real consequences. 39 By understanding how these technologies work, students can start to enjoy more benefits of technology.
Encourage families to have meaningful conversations with their child. Take the time to share with families the topics and resources you’re teaching in class. 40 Knowing we’re all in the same boat is crucial.

I’ve been very fond of classical music since I was a kid. The soft piano melody or grand symphony always calms my nerves after a stressful school week. My best friend Tom is totally different; he’s a big rock music fan, with loud electric guitars and heavy drums following him everywhere.
We’d never argued about musical tastes before, but last Friday evening, things got heated. We sat on the neighborhood park lawn, passing headphones back and forth. After Tom listened to my favorite Chopin Nocturne (肖邦夜曲), he shrugged, saying: “It’s okay, but way too slow. Where’s the energy?”
I frowned, snatching the headphones back. “Energy? Your rock music is just noise! Singers shout like they’re in pain, and instruments hurt my ears,” I said sharply. Tom’s eyes widened; he leaned forward and replied in a raised voice: “You don’t get it! Rock is passion, saying how you feel freely! You’re stuck in an old-fashioned circle, scared to try new things!” My cheeks burned with anger. “Old-fashioned? Classical music has real artistry, not just screaming and hitting!” I stood up and kicked a pebble (鹅卵石) hard. Tom jumped up too, fists clasped. “How dare you disrespect what I love? You’re my best friend. I thought you’d understand!” Before I could reply, he turned and stormed off, the backpack swinging. I yelled after him: “Fine! Don’t talk to me if you’re unreasonable!” But as he disappeared around the corner, regret flickered (闪现). I quickly pushed it away, still angry.
For three days, we didn’t speak. We passed in the school hallway without a glance, and group chats went silent. I missed our jokes and after-school walks, but was too stubborn to apologize. Deep down, I knew I’d gone too far.
