“Everything you see tonight will be made up on the spot: every scene, every line, and every character will be for tonight and tonight only,” the groups announced to their excited audience. Nine times a term, McDonnell Hall 162 is transformed from a lecture hall into a stage. The room is packed with students filling every seat and staircase to watch their fellow students create characters and stories, bits and scenes, all in front of their very eyes. They come to see IMPROV.
K. A. R. L. is one of the University’s three IMPROV groups, along with MPR and Suspicious of Whistlers. When asked about why and how he got involved with K. A. R. L., Max Church reflected on a memory of a K. A. R. L. show he watched upon visiting his sister at Washington University before he was a student. “I wasn’t into theater in high school, but once I saw people just go on stage and just have fun with their friends, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of.”
Max auditioned (面试) for the IMPROV group in his freshman year. One warm-up activity in particular, where auditionees are placed in groups of three and then have the opportunity to give a funny remark based on the person before them, caught his attention. “It helps auditionees realize they, as a group, can make a scene out of anything,” he said.
“Having unconditional support from your scene partners is not something that happens in day-to-day life. It only happens in this space, where you’re told to stop thinking about yourself. The focus is the scene, not you,” Max describes a trip to Chicago that the three groups attended, which was a great opportunity to watch different IMPROV as well as create a bond with the groups and the IMPROV community.
4. What is IMPROV according to the text?
A. An award ceremony. B. An academic lecture.
C. A live performance. D. A campus movie.
5. Which word best describes Max’s joining K. A. R. L.?
A. Challenging. B. Eventful. C. Lengthy. D. Accidental.
6. What impressed Max most during the audition?
A. The large number of auditionees. B. The instant comments session.
C. Auditionees’ attempt to break rules. D. Professional help from others.
7. What did the three groups gain from the Chicago trip?
A. They secured financial support. B. They built stronger ties.
C. They focused on inner thoughts. D. They won great reputation.

“The noise is becoming problematic,” said Malia Everette, who called me from a hotel in Mexico. “It’s especially bad during high season. The traffic is loud. People are out on the street having the time of their lives, and you can’t sleep because you hear booming music.”
Travel is getting louder in big and small ways, but one of the most significant contributors to travel noise is the travel industry itself. Airports are expanding to accommodate more passengers. Roads are busier and hotels are constantly being remodeled. Throughout the tourism space, there will always be a cycle of transformation and reinvention that causes noise pollution.
To escape unwanted travel noise, Earth.fm, a nonprofit organization, publishes a list of the quietest places in loud cities. “They’re mostly parks in urban areas, where the noise level drops dramatically because of the lack of cars. Actually, escaping noise pollution isn’t necessarily about finding silence,” says Olivia Lott, a spokeswoman for Earth.fm. “Not all noise is bad for our health. There’s increasing evidence that the sounds of nature, like ocean waves or birdsong, can relax you.”
When you’re on the road, there are a few tried and true tips. Avoid flying during peak hours. When booking a hotel, request a room away from busy streets and lifts. Most importantly, don’t tolerate loud noise when you’re staying in a hotel or vacation rental. Ask for a different room. For a lasting quiet experience, however, more decisive industry-level action is essential. The travel industry can do more to shield you from harmful noise, and it should. Hotel rooms need better soundproofing and electric vehicles make almost no noise at all.
As travel continues to raise its decibel (分贝) levels, maybe it’s time for travelers to take matters into their own hands, or ears. By packing a pair of quality earplugs and having a well-thought-out travel plan, you can reclaim your right to enjoy the journey without feeling like you’re stuck in a rock concert.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Where tourism space declines. B. Why travelling becomes popular.
C. How travel is getting louder. D. What results travel noise brings.
9. What do Olivia Lott’s words imply?
A. We should view noise objectively.
B. We can live in harmony with nature.
C. It’s reasonable to seek total silence.
D. Noise pollution covers natural sounds.
10. What does the underlined word “shield” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Shelter. B. Distinguish. C. Distract. D. Restrict.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Noise is unavoidable during the trip.
B. A noisy journey can bring special fun.
C. Good preparations silence travel noise.
D. Concerts add unique meaning to trips.
D
It seems like every day a new study finds microplastics where they should not be: in our bodies and our food, water and air. Yet finding and identifying microplastics is extremely challenging, especially given their small size. Additionally, it can be hard for researchers to avoid unintentionally polluting their samples, because these plastics are practically everywhere. As a result, much of this research may be overestimating the number of microplastics.
In the study published in March 2026, our team found that, even when following established procedures, using certain methods to measure environmental microplastics can potentially contaminate (污染) the results. As chemists at the University of Michigan, we set out to understand how many microplastics Michiganders were breathing in when outside. We followed all the standard procedures, but we found plastic counts in the air that were over 1,000 times greater than previous reports.
We knew these numbers didn’t seem right, so what happened? Ultimately, we concluded that laboratory gloves, which the scientific community recommends using as a best practice, can transfer particles (微粒) to the surface of our samples.
Here’s how: The particles, which we identified as stearate salts, are used to help the gloves release from their model during the production process. When gloves are used to handle laboratory equipment, the particles are transferred to anything they touch.
Researchers use vibrational spectroscopy (振动光谱) to identify microplastics, which involves measuring how the particle interacts with light. Because microplastics and stearate salts have very similar structures, they also interact with light in a similar way. This structural similarity makes it difficult to distinguish them using vibrational spectroscopy to determine whether a particle is plastic. Glove remains may be increasingly mistaken for microplastics.
While we had to abandon our initial dataset, we expect the lessons we learned about glove pollution to reach other scientists. Definitely, we’ll continue our research — but this time without gloves.
12. What problem with microplastic research is stressed?
A. The severity of plastic pollution. B. The challenge of recycling microplastics.
C. The difficulty in collecting plastics. D. The misjudgment in microplastic detection.
13. What did the Michigan chemists originally aim to study?
A. To figure out how to prevent sample pollution.
B. To analyse residents’ outdoor microplastic intake.
C. To evaluate microplastics’ effects on Michiganders.
D. To confirm a proper microplastic measuring method.
14. How do the Michigan chemists view vibrational spectroscopy?
A. It fails to recognize stearate salts.
B. It changes the structure of tiny particles.
C. It shortens the testing procedure.
D. It detects similar-sized plastic particles.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Testing Tools: Key to Spotting Tiny Plastics.
B. The Overestimation of Microplastics in Studies.
C. Lab Gloves: A Hidden Source of Detection Error.
D. A New Method to Detect Microplastics Accurately.

Why our brains are hardwired for both healthy and unhealthy routines
Every habit begins as a choice, but not every habit actually remains one. A 2026 study found that two thirds of your daily actions are dominated by habits and a minority of your behaviors are chosen. ____16____ If every day started with your brain processing why you had to brush your teeth and considering each step taken to do so, your energy would already have been consumed significantly by mid-morning. Essentially, a habit is a behaviour circle the brain has learned to depend on.
____17____ It then shifts the corresponding learned neural (神经的) signals from conscious control to automatic habit circuits. Deeper in the brain, actions become habits by bypassing higher-level decision making. Good habits can increase your productivity and improve health. By contrast, a bad habit usually offers an immediate reward that the brain can more easily become addicted to.
Take the common habit of going to bed. ____18____ If you go to bed early regularly, this is considered a good habit, as you are more likely to wake up earlier for a more productive following day. This is good for your health, but the feeling of being productive the next day will only bring rewards with repetition. ____19____ Going to bed late, however, instantly rewards you with entertainment and comfort.
____20____ Unfortunately, the brain initially favors smaller, immediate rewards over larger long-term rewards, so forming good habits takes more effort. By disciplining yourself, when good habits form, they’re more fruitful, and they can lead to a happier, healthier life.
A. In other words, you get no instant payoff.
B. Forming good habits seems easy at first glance.
C. A good habit doesn’t form as easily as a bad one.
D. This is why the brain prefers automatic behaviour.
E. When to go to bed is, at first, a conscious choice.
F. However, these conscious decisions use up the most mental energy.
G. By repeating actions, the brain learns that a certain action is safe and necessary.

Sophie Williams had always loved drawing. Ever since she was little, she would spend hours sketching (素描) anything that came to mind — animals, landscapes, and even imaginary creatures. When her art teacher, Mrs Reynolds, announced that the school was hosting an art competition, Sophie felt both excited and nervous. It was her chance to show everyone what she could do, but the thought of competing against other students made her anxious. “What if my drawing isn’t good enough?” she wondered aloud one evening while working on her sketch.
Her elder brother, Daniel, overheard her and gave her some advice. “You don’t need to worry about the result,” he said. “Just focus on doing your best. Remember, art is about expressing yourself, not about being perfect.” His words made Sophie feel a little better, but as the competition deadline approached, she still felt unsure. She spent days working on her drawing, trying to make every detail just right. She chose to draw a large oak tree in a field, with the sun setting behind it. The colors were vibrant (鲜艳的), and she added delicate details to the leaves and grass.
When Sophie brought her finished drawing to school, she saw other students’ work displayed on the walls. There were paintings, collages (拼贴画), and digital art — all of them impressive. She shook with tension as she placed her drawing alongside the others. “Maybe mine isn’t good enough after all,” she thought, feeling small compared to the talent around her. Mrs Reynolds noticed her hesitation and smiled, “Your work is beautiful, Sophie. Remember, it’s not about comparing yourself to others — it’s about doing what you love.”
The next day, the school’s lecture hall was packed with students, teachers, and parents for the awards ceremony. Sophie’s heart raced as the judge began to announce the winners. She wasn’t expecting her name to be called, but deep down, she hoped for a small chance.

C 5. D 6. B 7. B

C
C 9. A 10. A 11. C

通读第二段内容可知,该段首句内容“Travel is getting louder in big and small ways, but one of the most significant contributors to travel noise is the travel industry itself.(旅行中的噪音正从方方面面变得越来越严重,而旅行噪音最重要的诱因之一就是旅游业本身)”提出了该段的核心话题“旅游业本身是噪音最大源头”,随后列举了“Airports are expanding(机场扩建)”、“Roads are busier and hotels are constantly being remodeled.(道路越来越繁忙,酒店也在不断翻修。)”
根据文章第三段内容“Not all noise is bad for our health. There’s increasing evidence that the sounds of nature, like ocean waves or birdsong, can relax you.(并非所有的噪音都对我们的健康有害。越来越多的证据表明,海浪或鸟鸣等大自然的声音可以让你放松。)”可知,Olivia Lott认为不是所有噪音都有害,自然类声音(海浪、鸟鸣)能让人放松。由此推知,Olivia Lott的话暗示了噪音不能一概而论,我们应该客观区分看待不同的声音。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词所在句的后文内容“Hotel rooms need better soundproofing and electric vehicles make almost no noise at all.(酒店客房需要更好的隔音设施,而电动汽车几乎完全不会产生噪音。)”
根据文章最后一段内容“By packing a pair of quality earplugs and having a well-thought-out travel plan, you can reclaim your right to enjoy the journey without feeling like you’re stuck in a rock concert.(备好一副高品质耳塞,再规划一份周全的出行方案,你就能重新安心享受旅途,不必全程身处如同摇滚现场般嘈杂的环境。)”
D 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第五段中的“Because microplastics and stearate salts have very similar structures, they also interact with light in a similar way. This structural similarity makes it difficult to distinguish them using vibrational spectroscopy to determine whether a particle is plastic.(由于微塑料和硬脂酸盐结构十分相似,它们与光线的作用方式也相近。这种结构相似性导致依靠振动光谱很难区分二者,无法判断微粒是否为塑料。)”可知,振动光谱无法识别区分硬脂酸盐,容易将其误判为微塑料。
【15题详解】
通读全文,文章核心在于揭示实验室手套残留的硬脂酸盐微粒会导致微塑料检测出现严重误差,这一发现解释了为何既往研究可能高估了微塑料数量。C选项“Lab Gloves: A Hidden Source of Detection Error(实验室手套:检测误差的隐藏源头)”精准概括了文章的核心发现。
F 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. B

上文“A 2026 study found that two thirds of your daily actions are dominated by habits and a minority of your behaviors are chosen.(一项2026年的研究发现,你日常行为的三分之二由习惯主导,只有少部分行为是主动选择的。)” F“However, these conscious decisions use up the most mental energy.(然而,这些有意识的决策会消耗最多的脑力。)”承接上文,转折解释人类依赖习惯的原因,后文“If every day started with your brain processing why you had to brush your teeth and considering each step taken to do so, your energy would already have been consumed significantly by mid-morning. (如果每天一开始你的大脑都要思考你为什么必须刷牙,还要考虑刷牙的每一步,到上午中段时你的精力就已经被大幅消耗了。)”举例说明事事主动思考会大量消耗精力,逻辑衔接紧密。
【17题详解】
后文“It then shifts the corresponding learned neural (神经的) signals from conscious control to automatic habit circuits.(随后它将习得的相关神经信号,从有意识的控制转变为自动化的习惯回路。)” G“By repeating actions, the brain learns that a certain action is safe and necessary.(通过重复行为,大脑会判定某一行为是安全且必需的。)”
上文“Take the common habit of going to bed.(以常见的上床睡觉习惯为例。)” E“When to go to bed is, at first, a conscious choice.(何时睡觉,起初是一种有意识的选择。)”
上文“This is good for your health, but the feeling of being productive the next day will only bring rewards with repetition.(这对你的健康有益,但次日高效的感受只有通过重复才能带来回报。)” A“In other words, you get no instant payoff.(换句话说,你无法获得即时回报。)”精准同义转述前文内容,与后文“Going to bed late, however, instantly rewards you with entertainment and comfort.(晚睡却能立刻让你获得娱乐和舒适。)”
后文“Unfortunately, the brain initially favors smaller, immediate rewards over larger long-term rewards, so forming good habits takes more effort.(遗憾的是,大脑最初偏爱微小的即时回报,而非更大的长期回报,因此养成好习惯需要更多努力。)” B“Forming good habits seems easy at first glance. (乍一看,养成好习惯似乎很容易。)”总领本段,和下文形成转折关系,说明养成好习惯似乎很容易,但其实需要更多努力。

【答案】范文
My View on Practice Makes Perfect
I firmly believe the saying “Practice makes perfect” holds true for everything we learn. No one can master skills overnight, and constant practice helps us overcome weaknesses and make steady progress.
Take my English writing as an example. I used to make many grammar mistakes. I kept writing short passages every day and revised them carefully. Gradually, my articles became fluent and won praise from my teacher.
Without repeated practice, talent alone won’t lead to success. Only persistent efforts can bring us perfection.

With every passing second, Sophie sat nervously in her seat. She stared at her shoes, too afraid to listen closely to the names being read out. Several first and second prizes went to students whose art she had admired greatly. Just as Sophie prepared to accept that she would win nothing, the judge mentioned a special creativity award. “This piece captures warm peace of nature with sincere feelings — the winner is Sophie Williams!” Shocked, Sophie froze for a second before walking up to the stage unsteadily. She held the prize tightly, her eyes shining with joyful tears.
Walking off the stage, Sophie was greeted with a big hug from Mrs Reynolds. Her brother Daniel also waved wildly from the crowd with a wide smile. Sophie realized her brother and teacher were right. Art was never a competition against others. What mattered most was pouring her true feelings into every line and color. Later, she kept her award on the desk beside her sketchbook. From then on, she drew without anxiety, simply enjoying the pleasure of expressing herself through art every single day.
