三、阅读理解。(本大题共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)
A
Treasure Island (1883), written by Robert Louis Stevenson from Scotland, is an adventure story of “pirates and buried gold”. The main character for most of the story is a boy, Jim Hawkins. He finds a map showing where the terrible pirate Captain Flint hid his treasure. Jim joins Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey on a journey to find the treasure along with a number of pirates, led by the fearful Long John Silver.
One of the main themes of the story is Jim Hawkins’ coming of age. At the beginning of the story, Jim is an innocent child, living in a safe world with his parents. When his father dies, Jim goes to search for treasure. This adventure tests his courage and morals. At the end, Jim finds the treasure, but he also has become a mature young man who chooses good over evil and a quiet life over adventure. His search for treasure is a metaphor for his search for himself.
Treasure Island has greatly influenced our idea of pirates and has introduced many popular images into our culture: treasure maps marked with an ‘X’, tropical islands, one-legged sailors with parrots and the black spot. The characters of Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver with his pet parrot, Captain Flint, have become legends all over the world.
No one knows where Treasure Island really is but some experts think it may be Norman Island in The British Virgin Islands, an uninhabited island where real treasure was once buried.

Life in her uncle’s house is quiet and boring. Mary has no friends and often feels lonely, so she likes walking around the big house and the nearby fields in her free time.

Have you ever kept reading at night because you just couldn’t put a book down? The rising action in a story is the events that cause trouble and get people interested. 41 That feeling makes you keep turning the pages until you reach the story climax (高潮).
42 For example, the rising action in The Three Little Pigs begins when the pigs set out and start making their own choices.
You may guess that two of the pigs are making a big mistake when they choose weak materials to build their houses. Small worries, along with the wolf hiding nearby, build suspense (悬念). 43 The tension grows each time the wolf blows down a house. The action keeps rising until the final fight between the third pig and the wolf.
44 In books, the rising action includes the decisions, past events, and character mistakes that move a story from the beginning toward the climax.
When you read a novel, pay attention to clues (线索) about future events. 45 This will help you understand how rising action develops in the books you read.
A.They give you that exciting feeling.
B.Think about the parts that make you feel nervous.
C.This example shows what rising action really means.
D.It is very easy to find the climax in every story you read.
E.As you read, you feel that the pigs are heading for big trouble.
F.Good reading habits can help you become a better story writer.
G.You can find rising action in many kinds of stories, from big novels to simple children’s tales.

A. Sure, I’d love to B. Sounds great
C. I’m afraid I can’t D. Never mind

One day, Mary hears a strange story. There was once a lovely and beautiful garden on the estate. It belonged to her uncle’s wife. Mr. Craven loved his wife deeply. However, after his wife passed away, the garden became a sad and painful memory for him. He could not bear to see it, so he locked it up. For ten years, the garden has been completely forgotten by everyone.
By chance, Mary finds an old rusty key. With this key, she opens a hidden door and walks into the long-lost garden. She is excited but also sad. The garden is in a terrible mess. Grass grows wildly, flowers fade and most plants are dying without care.
Mary decides to save the garden. She shares her secret with her kind new friend Dickon. The two children go to the garden secretly every day. They water the plants, pull out the weeds and take good care of the garden little by little.
Later, Mary gets to know her cousin Colin. Colin has been sick and weak for a long time. After his mother’s death, he always stays alone in a quiet room and never goes out. He is so fragile that he has not walked for many years.
Mary and Dickon invite Colin to the secret garden. The fresh air, warm sunshine and blooming flowers bring great changes to Colin. Day by day, he becomes healthier and stronger. Surprisingly, he stands up and walks on his own for the first time after years.

Suddenly, he noticed something moving in the dark — a red fox was creeping toward the sleeping geese. The fox, Smir, was looking for his dinner. His eyes were fixed on Akka, the old leader of the geese.
The geese woke up and flew into the air, but Akka was slower than the others. Smir caught her in his mouth! Nils’s heart beat fast with fear, but he knew he had to do something.
He ran toward the fox, shouting loudly,“Let her go, you thief!” Smir just laughed at the small boy and kept running. Then Nils had a clever idea. He jumped and grabbed (抓住) Smir’s long tail, holding on with all his strength.
“Let go of me, you little creature!” Smir shouted angrily. He turned his head, trying to bite Nils. But Nils swung (摆动) himself to the side, pulling the fox’s tail so hard that Smir had to open his mouth. Akka fell to the ground!
Quickly, Akka flew up to a tree. She was safe! Smir was very angry and tried to catch Nils instead. But Akka called to the other geese for help. Soon, many geese flew down and they pecked (啄) at the fox’s head and back until Smir ran away.
Akka flew to Nils. “You saved my life,” she said thankfully. “You’re one of us now.”

Nils thought for a moment. “When I was big, I never thought about others’ feelings. Now that I’m small, I understand how it feels to need help.”

【答案】例文:
Reading and Me
As a book lover, I have read a great many books, but my favorite is The Old Man and the Sea.
The book tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago. He fights a huge fish alone at sea for three days and never gives up. Although sharks then eat the fish, Santiago is still a hero because courage matters more than success. I first read it in primary school. Later, whenever I face difficulties in life or study, I will think of Santiago, who gives me the strength to keep trying.
This book not only shows me the magic of reading but also changes my way of thinking. Just like Bacon said “Reading makes a full man.”
