For people near a national park in Kenya, lions are a big problem. The park is very large, with mountains and rivers. So there are no fences in some parts of the park. Lions often go out of the park at night. They go to the farms and eat the cows. As a result, farmers have to kill the lions to protect their cows. In 1990, about 15,000 lions lived in Kenya, but now there are far fewer lions. A Kenyan boy named Richard Turere helped solve this problem and protect the lions…

A: Yes, he did that at the age of 11.
B: How did he do that? Tell me more.
A: He tried many ways. He first used a scarecrow, but the lions soon knew it
wasn’t a real person. Then he hid the cows, but the lions could still smell them.
B: It wasn’t easy.
A: He didn’t give up. One night, he walked around with a light. And guess what!
The lions didn’t come near!
B: They were scared of the moving light!
A: Yes. Richard suddenly had the key to the problem. He put lights on the fences
and made them go on and off. It worked!
B: Wow, that’s cool! I really admire him!
A: Me too. Now his invention is used widely. He is young, but he is good at
thinking and creating.
