Mufasa：The Lion King

After Jon Favreau’s The Lion King remake made more than $1 billion at the box office in 2019， Disney was keen to return to the world with a prequel（前传） focusing on Mufasa. This time， Barry Jenkins directs the cartoon with Aaron Pierre voicing Mufasa， a role made famous by James Earl Jones in the 1994 animated feature.

It’s January 2022， and my seven-year-old son is standing on his skateboard at the top of a concrete slope（斜坡）. He looks scared， and I’m urging him to try， almost begging. The reason for my enthusiasm？ Just a few weeks earlier， I stood frozen in that same spot before taking my own leap. I know how amazed he’ll feel afterward， so we take baby steps. Finally， he does it all on his own. As he makes it， his smile lights up the entire skatepark.

There’s something magical about skateboarding： In a flash， fright turns into delight. My husband and I began skating even in our 40s， so that we could learn alongside our son. As a “later skater”， I’ve come to realize that everything seems impossible until you try it. At the time， I had no idea how much I would gain from the not-so-simple art of standing sideways.

First， skateboarding teaches determination because progress comes from efforts. No matter how skilled the

crowd or how gravity-defying（反重力的） the moves， you’ll see just as many tricks going wrong as right. Irish writer Samuel Beckett could have been speaking for skaters when he wrote， “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

It is the opening scene of the Chinese TV series She and Her Girls， which is based on true stories of Zhang Guimei. Everyone in China loves Zhang， an education pioneer who helps young girls to have the chance to get educated and choose their future. For years， Zhang， the principal of Huaping High School for Girls in Huaping County of Lijiang， Southwest China’s Yunnan Province， has been providing free education for girls from poor mountain areas， helping them change their fates through the national college entrance examination， known as Gaokao in Chinese. Each year， she accompanies her students to take the exam， which moves countless people.

The series， which was first released on Teachers’ Day， has given us a chance to see the power of faith. Even days after the first episode was broadcast， one of Zhang’s words still rang in my ear. “An educated woman can stop herself from being a vine attached to others and can choose the life she wants to live，” she said.

I believe that everyone who has watched She and Her Girls will admire and respect Zhang as she， like a mountain flower blooming on a cliff（悬崖）， has been spending her lifetime lighting the way forward for girls in the mountains.

Have you ever left a movie theater with a mixed feeling？ No？ Well， you definitely haven’t seen the movie Nope. This 2022 movie is a horror movie. Despite having the amazing director Jordan Peele and the wonderful actors， this film still manages to be the worst I’ve ever seen.

In the movie， it shows us a Western 1998 setting where we follow a brother， OJ， and a sister， Emerald Haywood. Emerald is a fun and entertaining woman， while OJ is shy but outspoken when necessary. They run a large horse farm. They observe something mysterious in the sky， which they later learn is a UFO. This UFO is eating people who are watching horse races. To help their horse farm， they try their best to beat the monster.

Daniel Kaluuya is a good actor and has experience in playing in horror movies. In the movie， he did a good job at playing the role of OJ until he took a turn for the worse， going from a shy person to a hero who leads his group to success without any visible growth. That makes his character challenging for the audience to understand. I love Keke Palmer’s humor and energy in the movie， but it gets to a point where she is too active， which makes her character Emerald unpleasant.

Many scenes in the movie are extended not to create suspense（悬念） but simply to add screen time. That makes the two hours feel like four. There are many storylines that end as quickly as they begin， with seemingly no point. The film is a far cry from horror and suspense. It is just an alien story with some seeming scares in between. Jordan Peele tried to make the movie symbolic， which made him blind to the idea that movies are supposed to be entertaining to watch. This movie is not for you if you are a true suspense and horror fan. If you ask me whether you should watch it or not， I’d say “Nope”.
