Growing up in Ghana, Kofi was fascinated by Chinese movies like Journey to the West, which sparked his curiosity about Chinese language and culture. Determined to understand more, he enrolled in a Chinese studies program at a top university in Ghana in 2017.
The beginning was challenging. The unfamiliar characters, tones, and grammar made him consider quitting after his very first lesson. Fortunately, his Chinese teacher offered consistent encouragement and even invited him to spend a vacation fully engaged in language practice. It was then that he received his Chinese name, Wang Chenggong, meaning “King of Success”.
To deepen his cultural understanding, Kofi volunteered at the Confucius Institute, where he learned calligraphy, paper-cutting, and dragon dance. His efforts were recognized with several awards. In 2019, he was elected president of his university’s Chinese Students Association and later won the national Chinese Bridge competition, which earned him a scholarship to study in China. Although the pandemic delayed his plans, he persisted, working as a teaching assistant and volunteer Chinese teacher in Ghana.
Finally, in September 2023, Kofi arrived in China. Beyond the language and culture he had long studied, he experienced firsthand the realities of Chinese-style modernization: efficient high-speed railways, mobile payment systems, and AI-enabled services. What struck him most was the sense of safety — leaving his laptop in the library or forgetting his diary on the subway never led to loss, thanks to the honest and systemic social order.
Reflecting on his journey, Kofi often says, “Wo de ren sheng yin zhong wen er mei li” — “My life is beautiful because of Chinese.” From movie-inspired curiosity to life-changing cross-cultural immersion, his story illustrates how passion and perseverance can bridge continents and create new beginnings.
4. What initially motivated Kofi to learn Chinese?
A. A scholarship to study in China.
B. Encouragement from his family.
C. Awards from the Confucius Institute.
D. Chinese movies he watched in childhood.
5. What does Kofi’s experience in paragraph 2 mainly show?
A. The value of a teacher’s support.
B. The importance of a Chinese name.
C. The challenges of a different culture.
D. The difficulty of learning a language.
6. What left the deepest impression on Kofi after he arrived in China?
A. The smooth high-speed trains.
B. The convenience of payment.
C. The security of modern Chinese society.
D. Services powered by artificial intelligence.
7. What does the underlined word “immersion” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Planning. B. Mobility. C. Safety. D. Involvement.

Powered by the enthusiasm of fans, many stars are emphasizing sustainability in their tours and live events.
In many parts of the world, summer calendars are packed with music festivals. But on 25 August, Act 1.5, one of such shows, tried to be something different. Advertised as a “climate action accelerator (加速器)”, it showed the cooperation between a band called Massive Attack and scientists at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester, UK, to reduce carbon emissions (排放) in the live music industry.
Such efforts are much needed. In 2010, researchers estimated that the UK music industry produced some 540, 000 tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions annually. Live music accounted for 74%of that. Those figures are likely to have risen.
Many in the music industry are advocating ever more loudly on sustainability. Radiohead, Coldplay, and Billie Eilish are just some of the famous Western stars who have declared initiatives to make live events more sustainable.
These initiatives have not always met with the approval of climate campaigners. One common criticism is that stars’ advocacy often focuses on the actions of individual fans. When it comes to high-energy aspects of touring, such as stage power requirements and artists’ travel, their preferred solution is often to find alternative ways to cancel out impact, rather than reducing emissions directly.
However, it is heartening to see that some real change has already been achieved. In 2023, for the first time, the long-running Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom was powered only by fossil-fuel-free (非化石燃料) energy. In June 2024, Coldplay announced that direct emissions from its current world tour were almost 60%lower than those of its 2016-17 stadium tour.
Historically, music has played a key part in social movements. The industry now has the chance to be a role model for real change. A 2022 report by researchers at the University of Glasgow, UK, found that music fans are more likely to care about climate change than non-music fans. So, the change will come when it is driven by those highest up in the music industry and backed by good science.
8. What makes the Act 1.5 music event special?
A. Demonstrating a different musical style.
B. Promoting the cooperation between bands.
C. Funding scientific research on climate.
D. Taking green actions based on science.
9. What is the purpose of listing data in the third paragraph?
A. To highlight the UK music industry’s success.
B. To indicate the challenges in the UK music industry.
C. To criticize the rising costs of the UK music festivals.
D. To stress the emission impact of the UK music industry.
10. Why do climate campaigners sometimes disapprove of stars’ advocacy?
A. It emphasizes reducing artists’ travel emission.
B. It focuses on fans cutting down emissions.
C. It prefers to use fossil-fuel-free energy.
D. It ignores the action of individual fans.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the music industry addressing climate issues?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Critical.

Shared tables, a trend enjoying popularity in the 1980s, offer a different social way to digital natives in the West. Where diners once were unwilling to sit with strangers, Gen Z, individuals born between 1997 and 2012, are pulling their chairs a little closer. According to new data, 90% of Gen Z diners say they enjoy communal tables, or shared tables, compared to just 60% of boomers, people born during a period when many babies were born, highlighting a generational revival (复苏) of dining together.
Communal dining has long divided the room — in more than one way. For example, a report from the online reservation service company Resy found 63% of respondents feel that communal tables are great for meeting new people, with half saying they’ve had interesting conversations with someone they otherwise wouldn’t have spoken to while dining with strangers. However, the format has been a joke in an American comedy, where characters put up with awkward small talk over shared seating.
Michael Della Penna, chief strategy officer at the digital advertising research firm InMarket, said that, for members of a notably anxious generation, the communal environment can be comforting, “because you don’t have to be the focus or the initiator of the group conversation.” It’s especially comforting for those who may feel like they don’t have the social skills. “It’s a safe step towards connecting and being social where you don’t have the heavy weight of carrying the entire conversation,” Della Penna said.
“Communal dining has a history of thousands of years, but its popularity has been unstable, with waves of enthusiasm following periods of little interaction,” said Donnie Madia, a Chicago-based restaurateur. “Back in 2008, after the financial crisis, which forced people to reduce engagement with others, people wanted to be together, and to be in smaller spaces; once they started to come back to the restaurants, they wanted that festive feeling of dining together.”
Gen Z grew up online, but they’re intentionally seeking real-world connections, and restaurants have become that gathering space again. For them, sharing a table isn’t just practical seating.
12. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. Digital natives lack connections. B. The shared dining trend is back.
C. Shared tables change social ways. D. Gen Z have similar eating habits.
13. What do the examples show about communal dining in paragraph 2?
A. It is often misunderstood. B. It is gaining popularity.
C. It receives mixed reactions. D. It leads to disconnection.
14. Why might communal dining appeal to anxious people?
A. It provides group topics to discuss. B. It allows them to present social skills.
C. It enables them to be the talk’s focus. D. It offers a less pressured way to socialize.
15. What do Donnie Madia’s words imply?
A. Communal dining caught on after 2008.
B. Crises discourage people from exploring.
C. Restaurants need to create the festive feeling.
D. Social disconnection stimulates communal dining.

I have sometimes given money to beggars. ___16___ Please let me explain why.
First, for every dollar that we give to a beggar, the more profitable we make begging and, comparatively, the less profitable we make working. This is bad, for we want people to work, not beg. Working is productive while begging is at best neutral and often a burden. Second, the beggar who receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs. ____17____
When I went to elementary school, I remember that I was very moved by a song named "Streets of London". The song tells a heartbreaking story about some of London's poorest, an old man in particular. Not long ago, however, when I heard the song on the radio, it struck me that the man in the song does not live that horrible a life after all. Judging from the lyrics of the song, the man has shoes, and occasional access to a newspaper. ____18____ So why should you give money to the beggar in the developed world instead of the starving child in Africa?
It might be harsh to claim that it is immoral to give money to Western beggars. After all, it seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like. ____19____ If our aim is to benefit ourselves, then giving money to beggars is not suitable. If our aim is to benefit others, then giving money to beggars is also wasteful.
In seeking to help others, we should not merely give to those who are geographically close to us and whose appearance arouses our sympathy. ____20____ To achieve this, we should first decide how much we are willing to spend helping others, and then donate money to the most efficient charity.
A. Many people die of hunger in Africa.
B. True as it might be, we should spend our money wisely.
C. Why not donate money to those in need of financial aid?
D. Upon reflection, however, I have come to change my mind.
E. You almost certainly spend money helping the wrong people.
F. In a world where thousands die of hunger every day, that's a pretty comfortable life.
G. Rather, we should aid those who are the least responsible for the situation they're in.

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells boring jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself and me!!!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

D 5. A 6. C 7. D

根据第一段中的“Growing up in Ghana, Kofi was fascinated by Chinese movies like Journey to the West, which sparked his curiosity about Chinese language and culture. (科菲在加纳长大,对《西游记》等中国电影非常着迷,这激发了他对汉语和中国文化的好奇心。)”可知,科菲最初学习汉语的动力是他童年时看的中国电影。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“The beginning was challenging. The unfamiliar characters, tones, and grammar made him consider quitting after his very first lesson. Fortunately, his Chinese teacher offered consistent encouragement and even invited him to spend a vacation fully engaged in language practice. (一开始充满挑战。陌生的汉字、声调以及语法让他第一节课后就考虑放弃。幸运的是,他的汉语老师给予了他持续的鼓励,甚至邀请他度过一个全身心投入语言练习的假期。)”可知,科菲起初学习汉语很困难并想放弃,正是老师的鼓励让他坚持了下来,这段经历主要体现了老师支持的价值。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“What struck him most was the sense of safety — leaving his laptop in the library or forgetting his diary on the subway never led to loss, thanks to the honest and systemic social order. (最让他印象深刻的是安全感——由于诚信且系统的社会秩序,把笔记本电脑留在图书馆或把日记忘在地铁上从来不会导致丢失。)”可知,科菲到达中国后,印象最深刻的是中国现代社会的安全性。故选C项。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“From movie-inspired curiosity to life-changing cross-cultural immersion, his story illustrates how passion and perseverance can bridge continents and create new beginnings.
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Critical.
D 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据文章第二段“But on 25 August, Act 1.5, one of such shows, tried to be something different. 【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Such efforts are much needed. In 2010, researchers estimated that the UK music industry produced some 540, 000 tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions annually. Live music accounted for 74%of that. Those figures are likely to have risen.(这样的努力是非常有必要的。2010年,研究人员估计英国音乐行业每年产生约54万吨的温室气体排放。现场音乐占其中的74%。这些数字很可能已经上升了。)”可知,数据表明英国音乐产业的温室气体排放量较大,强调了其排放影响。因此,第三段列举数据的目的是强调英国音乐产业的排放影响。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“One common criticism is that stars’ advocacy often focuses on the actions of individual fans. When it comes to high-energy aspects of touring, such as stage power requirements and artists’ travel, their preferred solution is often to find alternative ways to cancel out impact, rather than reducing emissions directly.(一个常见的批评是,明星们的倡导往往集中在个体粉丝的行动上。
根据文章倒数第二段“However, it is heartening to see that some real change has already been achieved. In 2023, for the first time, the long-running Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom was powered only by fossil-fuel-free(非化石燃料)energy. In June 2024, Coldplay announced that direct emissions from its current world tour were almost 60%lower than those of its 2016-17 stadium tour.(然而,令人欣慰的是,一些切实的改变已经实现了。

B 13. C 14. D 15. D

根据第一段中的“According to new data, 90% of Gen Z diners say they enjoy communal tables, or shared tables, compared to just 60% of boomers, people born during a period when many babies were born, highlighting a generational revival (复苏) of dining together.(根据新数据,90%的Z世代用餐者表示他们喜欢共用餐桌(即共享餐桌),而婴儿潮一代人(出生于婴儿大量出生时期的一代人)中这一比例仅为60%,这凸显了聚餐文化在代际间的复苏。)”
根据第二段中的“Communal dining has long divided the room — in more than one way. For example, a report from the online reservation service company Resy found 63% of respondents feel that communal tables are great for meeting new people, with half saying they’ve had interesting conversations with someone they otherwise wouldn’t have spoken to while dining with strangers. However, the format has been a joke in an American comedy, where characters put up with awkward small talk over shared seating.(共餐长期以来一直让人们看法不一——而且不止在一个方面。例如,在线预订服务公司Resy的一份报告发现,63%的受访者认为共用餐桌非常适合结识新朋友,其中一半人表示,他们曾与陌生人共餐时与本不会交谈的人进行过有趣的对话。然而,这种用餐形式在一部美国喜剧中却成了笑料,剧中角色们在共享座位上忍受着尴尬的闲聊。)”可知,这些事例体现出人们对共享就餐的反应是褒贬不一的。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Michael Della Penna, chief strategy officer at the digital advertising research firm InMarket, said that, for members of a notably anxious generation, the communal environment can be comforting, “because you don’t have to be the focus or the initiator of the group conversation.” It’s especially comforting for those who may feel like they don’t have the social skills. “It’s a safe step towards connecting and being social where you don’t have the heavy weight of carrying the entire conversation,” Della Penna said.(数字广告研究公司InMarket的首席战略官Michael Della Penna表示,对于这个明显焦虑的一代人来说,共享用餐的环境可以带来安慰,“因为你不必成为焦点,也不必做群体对话的发起者。”这对于那些觉得自己缺乏社交技能的人来说尤其令人感到安慰。“这是向社交和建立联系迈出的安全一步,你不必承受独自撑起整场对话的沉重负担,”Della Penna说道。)”可知,共享就餐为性格焦虑的人提供了压力更小、更轻松的社交方式。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Communal dining has a history of thousands of years, but its popularity has been unstable, with waves of enthusiasm following periods of little interaction(共餐有着数千年的历史,但它的流行程度一直不稳定,在一段段冷淡期之后,又会掀起一波又一波的热潮)”和“Back in 2008, after the financial crisis, which forced people to reduce engagement with others, people wanted to be together, and to be in smaller spaces(回到2008年,金融危机迫使人们减少与他人的交往,那之后人们渴望聚在一起,待在更小的空间里)”可知,Donnie Madia的话暗示了社会疏离感会促使人们进行集体用餐。
D 17. E 18. F 19. B 20. G
根据上文的“I have sometimes given money to beggars.我曾经拿钱给乞讨的人”和下文的“Please let me explain why. 让我解释一下为什么”以及下文陈述作者不再给乞讨者钱,可推知,作者的态度发生了变化。D. Upon reflection, however, I have come to change my mind.(然而,经过深思熟虑,我改变了想法)符合文意。故选D项。
根据上文“Second, the beggar who receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs.” E. You almost certainly spend money helping the wrong people.(你几乎肯定把钱花在了帮助错误的人上)符合文意,选项中的wrong people就指上文的“who receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs.”故选E项。
下文“So why should you give money to the beggar in the developed world instead of the starving child in Africa?”(因此,你为什么要把钱给那些发达世界的乞讨者,而不是给非洲那些挨饿的孩子呢?)与F. In a world where thousands die of hunger every day, that's a pretty comfortable life.(在一个每天都有数千人死于饥饿的世界里,拿是一种相当舒适的生活方式)承接自然,选项是下文提出反问的依据,此外下文的starving对应选项中的die of hunger。故选F项。
根据上文“It might be harsh to claim that it is immoral to give money to Western beggars. After all, it seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like.说给西方乞讨者钱是不道德的可能有点苛刻。毕竟,你自己的钱,你想怎么花都是合理的”以及下文“If our aim is to benefit ourselves, then giving money to beggars is not suitable. If our aim is to benefit others, then giving money to beggars is also wasteful. 如果我们的目标是对自己好,那么给乞讨者钱是不合适的;如果我们的目标是为了他人好,那么给乞讨者钱也是一种浪费”可推知,虽然钱是我们自己的,但我们要明智地花钱,不要把钱花在不必要的人身上。B. True as it might be, we should spend our money wisely.(尽管如此,我们应该明智地花钱)符合语境,且选项中的it就指上文的“it seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like.”。故选B项。
上文“In seeking to help others, we should not merely give to those who are geographically close to us and whose appearance arouses our sympathy.”(在寻求帮助别人时,我们不应该仅仅给那些地理位置上靠近我们或外表引起我们同情的人给予帮助)与G. Rather, we should aid those who are the least responsible for the situation they're in.(相反,我们应该帮助那些对他们的处境最没有能力负责的人)承接自然,上下文构成明显的转折关系,且话题一致,讲述了我们不仅要帮助那些离我们近或者让我们同情的人,而更应该帮助那些无法改变自己处境的人。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: “I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think.

Paragraph 2: My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: “I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think. I buried my face in my arms, too embarrassed to look up. All my classmates stared at my mom, some giggling quietly. I wished the floor could swallow me whole. Her clumsy but energetic dance moves made my cheeks burn hot. I kept blaming myself for not stopping her back in the grocery store. Every time she waved to me during the performance, I lowered my head even deeper, afraid my deskmate would tease me later. I just wanted this awkward moment to end immediately.
Paragraph 2: My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing. Slowly, I lifted my head and watched carefully. Her bright smile and cheerful song won everyone over. Soon all classmates stood up, singing and dancing along with her. Their loud laughter turned into warm cheers. After class, many kids crowded around my mom, begging her to come again. My teacher praised her for bringing so much joy to the class. At that moment, I felt proud instead of ashamed. I realized my mom’s willingness to help was far more valuable than my silly embarrassment.
