First, a sincere thank you to the neighbors who have reached out over the past few months. We’ve heard from many of you — even a note tied to a rock thrown through our window! Now, a quick update: we’ve taken our new year lights down.
It wasn’t easy. Our lights had been up since December, nearly six months as part of our household. We were touched by the heartfelt concerns like, “ARE YOU KEEPING THEM UP FOREVER??!!!”
We hoped these lights, bought on a sale, would inspire us and find their forever home. But there were problems: the sizzle, the smell, the mosquitoes, and one green bulb (灯泡) that went on and off for no reason. We sought help, but Shiny Brite Light Installations wanted to charge us an arm and a leg. Luckily, we discovered we could simply remove it. We knew it would upset the color arrangements by having two red bulbs together, but it was the only option. Dealing with the messy wires was another tiring challenge. We asked ourselves, “What are we doing wrong?” I remembered falling into bed one night and saying to my husband, “Is it us?” His answer: “No. It’s those lights. We should take them back.”
Returning them? Unthinkable. Mainly because I’d lost the receipt, or because what kind of people would return a used item? Actually, neither. The lights were up, they were part of us now, and up they would stay.
Eventually, we relaxed and enjoyed the days as time passed. As temperatures rise, colorful flowers are perfect decorations now, but what about the lights still playing new year songs when sensing every Amazon delivery truck? Not so much.
Contrary to your whispers, we haven’t returned the lights. They’ve been rehomed in the basement, for now. Don’t worry. We remain committed to these lights. They are part of our family, even if they’re no longer on display — at least until late November.
24.How do the writer’s neighbors find her new year lights?
A.Artistic. B.Annoying. C.Traditional. D.Inspiring.
25.According to paragraph 3, which was a problem with the lights?
A.A part posed a safety risk. B.Their colors were boring.
C.A bulb flashed unpredictably. D.Their wires were exposed.
26.Why did the writer decide not to return the lights?
A.She regarded it a tiring challenge. B.She lost the receipt for them.
C.She considered it impolite. D.She grew attached to them.
27.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.This November will witness new lights delivered
B.The basement will be the lights’ forever home.
C.Lights are perfect symbols of season changes
D.The writer still plans on putting the lights up.
C
Just being intelligent (聪明的) doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Like many other scientists, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it. She calls it her “grit scale (量表).”
In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that git increases with education. People who finished college scored higher on the grit scale than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which measure IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Crede, a professor at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently pooled the results of 88studies on grit. Together, those studies tested nearly 67, 000 people. And grit did not predict success, Crede found.
However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”
28.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Intelligence determines success. B.Not all smart people will succeed.
C.Duckworth redesigned a grit scale. D.Grit decides how intelligent one might be.
29.What might influence a person’s grit according to Angela Duckworth’s findings?
A.Lifestyle. B.Family. C.Personality D.Education.
30.What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Comment. B.Disagree. C.Recognize. D.Warn.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Grit can hardly be taught. B.Grit can be improved eastly
C.Grit is strongly related to test anxiety. D.Grit has nothing to do with school grades.
D
Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork — everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony (讽刺)? Write them down!
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic (慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says — you may even want to add to your notes as you read.
32.What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A.It helps you to get good marks in tests. B.It’s a basic skill in researching a paper.
C.It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says. D.It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
33.Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
A.To introduce the topic of note-taking. B.To compare writing styles in different times.
C.To give an example of forming good habits. D.To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.
34.What is suggested in the third paragraph?
A.Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.
B.It’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.
C.It’s not always possible to note down all information in class.
D.A teacher’s style should be taken into consideration when taking notes.
35.What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?
A.Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
B.Students should put down only key points while listening carefully.
C.Students must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.
D.Students should put down as much information as possible in class.

After entering high school, you must wonder how to achieve academic excellence. Here are some practical strategies for you.
Go to class. If you intend to excel at school, attending classes is the fundamental step in pursuing academic success. If you are absent from classes, you will miss what the teacher considers crucial. As a result, you’ll miss content that is most likely to appear on the test. 36 .
Take exact notes. Try not to write down every single detail. 37 Note down the terms that are new to you. After class, review your notes promptly. You can supplement details that you missed and revisit the material while it is still fresh in your memory.
38 If you encounter difficulties in class, consult your teacher. He or she may be able to offer you additional assistance before or after class. Most teachers have limited sympathy for students who only grow anxious about failing during the final weeks of the grading period.
Take part in class discussions. 39 Raising questions and maintaining eye contact with your teachers and classmates can enhance your engagement and concentration during the class discussion. Should the material be challenging, you’d better read it in advance. This allows you to state your views clearly in class.
Form study groups. Gather students who are eager to perform well in class. Ensure that everyone is familiar with the material, for you do not want to waste time re-teaching concepts to those who fail to grasp them. 40 Occasionally, group study sessions can turn into casual chat sessions.
A.But exercise caution!
B.Don’t be late for your class.
C.Seek help from your teacher when necessary.
D.You should write down all the new terminology (术语).
E.Therefore, if you aim to excel academically, attend every class.
F.All you need is to record the main points in your own words.
G.To acquire more knowledge in class, participating in class discussions is beneficial.

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.
Her little granddaughter was about 8, barefoot and wearing a dress made out of cotton bags holding animal feed. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement.
I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every time we advertised. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a$10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and each time I advertised in that area, the old lady’s postcards would come to me.

W: That’s exhausting. Let’s go to the cinema instead.

W: Daniel, how’s your semester in Finland going?

W: Really? That’s incredible. Do you think the teaching method helps you learn better?
M: Definitely! At first, I couldn’t adapt to their teaching method, which demands a lot of concentration. But now I’m more independent. The results I’ve achieved also prove that the Finnish educational system works.
W: What about exams?
M: My college doesn’t evaluate students based on exam scores or class performance at the end of the semester. Instead, we are required to write self-assessment journals.

根据第一段“We’ve heard from many of you — even a note tied to a rock thrown through our window! (我们收到了你们许多人的纸条——甚至有一张纸条系在扔进我们窗户的石头上!)”和第二段“We were touched by the heartfelt concerns like, “ARE YOU KEEPING THEM UP FOREVER??!!! (我们被一些发自内心的担忧所感动,比如“你们要一直挂着灯吗??!!!”)””可知,作者收到邻居们抱怨,甚至有的人用石头砸窗户,故推断邻居们对作者家的新年彩灯感到厌烦,故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“But there were problems: the sizzle, the smell, the mosquitoes, and one green bulb (灯泡) that went on and off for no reason. (但也有一些问题:嘶嘶声、气味、蚊子,还有一个绿色的灯泡莫名其妙地开了又关)”可知,有个绿色的灯泡突然闪烁。故选C。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“The lights were up, they were part of us now, and up they would stay. (灯已经挂起来了,成了我们的一部分,就该一直挂着)” 可知,灯已经成为了作者和家人的一部分,体现作者对灯产生了感情,很依恋灯,故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据最后两段,尤其最后一句“They are part of our family, even if they’re no longer on display — at least until late November. (它们是我们家庭的一部分,即使它们不再出现——至少要到11月底)”可知,作者11月底还会挂起彩灯,故推断作者仍然打算把灯挂起来。故选D。
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.B 31.A
根据第一段中的“Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful, And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail.(聪明并不意味着一定会成功,不聪明也不意味着一定会失败。)”和第二段中的“When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. (深入研究后,Duckworth发现,表现最好的人拥有一种与聪明无关的品质。)”可知,聪明并不完全意味着一个人就会成功,不那么聪明的人也并不一定会失败,表现最好的人拥有一种与智商无关的品质,由此可推知,不是所有聪明人都能成功。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“She also found that grit increases with education. People who finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.(她还发现,毅力随着教育程度的提高而增加。在毅力测试中,大学毕业的人比毕业前辍学的人得分更高。大学毕业后去读研的人得分更高。)”可知,Angela Duckworth认为教育程度可以影响一个人的毅力。故选D。
30.词义猜测题。根据上文的“So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. (因此,她将测试智商的大学入学考试的分数与学校成绩和某人在毅力测试中的分数进行了比较。成绩越高的学生更有毅力)”可知,Duckworth认为毅力和成功有很大关系。结合划线词所在句子中的but可知,该句陈述的观点与上文相反,即一些人反对毅力意味着成功这个观点。由此猜测划线词意为“反对”,与Disagree(不同意)同义。故选B。
根据最后一段中““Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”(“学习习惯和技能、考试焦虑和出勤率与学校成绩的关系要比毅力密切得多,”Crede说,“我们可以教学生如何学好。我们可以帮助他们缓解考试焦虑,”他补充道。“我不确定我们是否能在毅力上做到这一点。”)”可推知,Crede认为学习习惯和技能、考试焦虑和出勤率与学校成绩的关系要比毅力密切得多,他不确定能否教会学生有毅力,这说明教会学生有毅力是很难的,由此可推知,毅力几乎不能被教会。故选A。
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.D 35.B
由文章第一段中“Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork — everything from taking tests to researching a paper. (记笔记是一种技能,可以帮助你在所有的学业上都做得很好——从参加考试到研究论文)”可知,记笔记的一个优点就是它可以帮助你在考试中取得好成绩。故选A。
由文章第二段“Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony (讽刺)? Write them down! (记下关键事实。如果你的老师在黑板上写笔记,那就太好了:你可以抄下来。如果没有,就记下课堂上最重要的要点。你的历史老师是否提到了某场关键内战战役的日期?你的英语老师是否举了莎士比亚使用讽刺手法的例子?把它们写下来!)”可知,提到莎士比亚是为了解释老师在课堂上提到的关键事实是什么。故选D。
34.细节理解题。由文章第三段“Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style. (不同的老师有不同的做法。例如,有些老师可能会在课堂上提到很多日期和事实,但只在黑板上写下关键的。而其他老师可能什么都不写,但他们可能会重复某个日期或某条信息。一段时间后,你就会了解老师的风格)”可知,第三段建议的是在记笔记时要考虑老师的风格。故选D。
35.细节理解题。由文章第四段中“Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class. (有些人实际上通过听讲、记下几个关键点,然后在课后复习材料来学习得更好)”可知,作者的观点是学生应该仔细听讲,只记下关键点。故选B。

At first I couldn't believe it! There were no 41 in rows, and no bells rang. No one had to go to 42 although we all lived in the school. 43 made us go to bed at a certain time. There was no "lights out".
The 44 thing was that actually all the students went to class, 45 very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or 46 class. The new ones always missed class 47 , but this never lasted long.
The subjects were the same as those in a 48 school, but different in the way ! For example, in botany (植物学) we had 49 classes in spring or autumn. We planted a vegetable garden and a flower garden instead. 50 in winter we each studied a few 51 things about what we had grown. In maths the students built three different kinds of storerooms instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a 52 time too, designing everything, and drawing the blueprints.
On the whole I think I am a 53 person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my age, and I can think better. That's probably the big 54 between the free school and regular school-the amount of 55 you have to do for yourself.

42. C。虽然学生住校,但“no one had to go to class”强调无人被迫上课,突出自由选择。

As a new high school student, I’ve realized that my biggest challenge in learning English is building confidence, especially in speaking. I often hesitate to join class discussions because I’m afraid of making mistakes.
To overcome this, I’ve decided to take small steps every day. I’ll try to speak English with my friends during breaks and keep an English journal to practice writing. Also, I plan to watch simple English cartoons and listen to easy songs to improve my listening. Joining the English club might be a fun way to learn with others. I believe step by step, I will become more confident and do better in English. (108 words)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
One day when I was in that area, I made a big decision.

One day when I was in the area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new piano in the house, advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later while sitting at a bar. I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered., My Lord, it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference.

27.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.This November will witness new lights delivered
