How do you do? Welcome to our school! I’m Li Hua, a middle school student in Grade Three and this is my last year of senior high school and I’ll graduate this summer.
There are three people in my family, and I’m the only child like most of my classmates, which is very common in Chinese families. Besides my courses, I have various hobbies, like playing football, basketball and swimming. I have collected a lot of stamps, which are very valuable now because we seldom post a letter nowadays.
I wonder if you can tell me something about yourself, your family and daily school life.
That’s all. Thank you.
Actually, I was not sure of what to do but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I ran as fast as I could, slipping and sliding in the mud, until I reached a small cottage with warm light glowing through the windows. I pounded on the door desperately. As a kind-faced woman opened it, panicked as I was, I attempted to collect my thoughts, trying to explain the situation in the way as concise as possible. Instantly, she called out her husband, who grabbed a rope and a flashlight. Within minutes, they were following me back into the storm. More neighbors joined us along the way, carrying shovels and blankets. No sooner had we arrived where the child was trapped than the warm-hearted neighbors took action, pulling the child out completely. Shortly afterwards, we took the frightened child back to the small cottage and waited for his parents.
The parents of the child were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. They were pale and breathless, rushing through the rain without even taking an umbrella. Seeing their son — by then wrapped in warm blankets, safe but exhausted, sitting in a neighbor’s arms, the mother let out a cry of relief and fell to her knees, tears of gratitude streaming down her face as she hugged her son tightly, kissing his wet forehead again and again. The father, his eyes red, stood frozen for a moment and then shook hands with every helper, “We can never thank you enough” his voice choked with gratitude. That night, despite the storm, I felt warmer than ever before for the strong sense of neighborliness. It was a true act of neighborliness — strangers becoming heroes, turning fear into hope, which strengthened my faith in humanity.

Then how did I pick where to go first? Well, unlike my usual pix like paris or london, I chose high non in china as my first place to go, and IT was amazing. During the journey, I have met people living in tough conditions who never give up and is shown me the importance of keeping up through my blogs. July is just around the corner. As you look forward to travelling or having your holidays to the beach, an outdoor theatre may also be a good choice. There are plenty of outdoor theatres to choose from across the UK.
Storyhouse Theatre, Chester
Every year in July, Storyhouse theatre builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year sees an eclectic trio: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. You will be most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young.
Thorington Theatre, Suffolk
Opening in 2021, Thorington is built in a natural amphitheatre hidden in the Suffolk woodlands. This year’s programme includes some family favourites such as Teddy Bear’s Picnic and The Little Mermaid, as well as Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. It will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary among other things. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surrounding, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in September.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor auditorium and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But in summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, nestled in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas, and The Secret Garden, the perfect story for this lush garden stage.

When Antony moved to South Africa, the world he knew was completely changed. Having lived in Kenya all his life, he felt deeply rooted by the country’s culture and way of life, and this was reflected in how he connected with other people wherever he went. However, arriving in South Africa made him rethink his usual way of leading and being. Any of us who have experienced a geographical move or immersion in a different culture have felt the challenge of needing to figure out how things are done — confidence and familiarity in one place doesn’t directly translate to the new context. This was not always easy, and he spent a lot of time managing cultural conflicts.
But Antony also arrived in South Africa with an important mindset taking formation. Shortly before he moved in 2018, he participated in CSCLeaders as part of his work with Unilever, and here he was thrown into an experience with diverse peers from across the world. He sometimes found it hard to know how to act or what to say, and this made him feel anxious. At times it was daunting but learning to understand context and lived experience before jumping to judge a person or situation proved incredibly helpful when he did make the shift to South Africa.
Since the programme, he makes it his mission to understand as much as he can about the people he works with, and the context and culture he’s operating within. He is truly dedicated to learning more about the people and the place that is integral to his work — he even took a three-day course that detailed South Africa’s entire history back to 1280!
Now, Antony’s constant learning and his deeply considered work at Unilever has been so successful that he is moving to Uganda to head up a new role there. Given his dedication to leading with deep cultural intelligence, I’ve no doubt he will thrive as he moves into this next big leadership transition.
24.What was the main challenge Antony faced when he first arrived in South Africa?
A.He struggled to learn the local language.
B.He missed the food and weather in Kenya.
C.His previous ways were no longer effective.
D.He couldn’t find a job that matched his skills.
25.The word “daunting” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.boring and repetitive B.frightening and challenging
C.exciting and promising D.simple and straightforward
26.What can we infer about Antony’s attitude towards learning about new cultures?
A.He believes it is a waste of time and energy.
B.He thinks it is only important for business leaders.
C.He sees it as an essential part of working effectively with others.
D.He feels it is something he can do after he has settled in a new place.
27.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The history of South Africa from 1280 until now.
B.Antony’s happiness of working at a big company.
C.The cultural differences among three African countries.
D.The impact of cultural learning on Antony’s leadership.
C
Living abroad is not for everyone. Though it can certainly be a fun and exciting experience, it can also be filled with difficulties. Before you book the plane ticket, it’s a good idea to think carefully about living abroad.
If you’ve lived in the same town for most of your life, a new place full of new food and things can seem like a dream comes true. Your free time will be filled with exploration and sightseeing. You’ll have the opportunity to experience places much older than the United States. However, that feeling will become less and you may find yourself wishing you could just turn on the TV and watch old TV series in English or eat your favourite American meal.
Americans in Europe and South America often find that medical care is both cheaper and easier to get than in the United States. For example, everyone can get a dental checkup for only around $ 20 in Turkey. However, you may be disappointed by the lack of familiar medicines. And you may not be able to read the instructions.
The work that the ordinary Americans can do abroad usually pays better than what the ordinary locals do. A full-time teaching job in Ukraine, for example, can help you live a very rich life. However, if you become bored with your position, other job choices are somewhat limited unless you speak the local language as well as English. Moreover, you will probably find that some benefits don’t exist for foreigners.
When you live abroad, opportunities for international travel increase greatly. You may be able to take a day trip across the border from your apartment in Budapest to a concert in Vienna or take a boat to Montevideo for a night out after work in Buenos Aires. However, your money may not allow especially comfortable travel and you may have to stay in inexpensive hotels, cook your own food and take long-distance land transportation.
28.Who is the passage written for?
A.Americans planning to live abroad. B.Europeans living in the USA.
C.People interested in international travel. D.Foreigners working in the USA.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Medicines are badly needed in South America.
B.It’s easier to get medical care in America than in Europe.
C.Medical care is often disappointing in South America.
D.It’s cheap to get a dental checkup in Turkey.
30.Which is the advantage for Americans working abroad?
A.They usually get higher pay than the ordinary locals.
B.They must learn the local language quickly.
C.There are many suitable positions for them.
D.They are able to get benefits as locals do.
31.What is the message the author is trying to send?
A.Living abroad is a fun and exciting experience.
B.Living abroad seems like a dream comes true.
C.Living abroad is not a good idea.
D.Living abroad is not for everyone.
D
In the rainforest, thousands of species sing and call, forming sound layers so rich that the human mind can be overwhelmed. Drop a hydrophone (水听器) into an ocean and you will hear similar richness, but it is foreign to our air-adapted ears. Hundreds of thousands of other vocal wonders ring out across the world. Every vocal species has a distinctive sound and every place on the globe has a unique vocal character. We live in a world of vocal wonder, yet this biological sound richness is being severely damaged worldwide.
In some places, vocal loss is caused by the destruction of habitats, from destroyed forests to overfished oceans. However, in habitats such as thick rainforests or oceans, sound is the only effective way for most animals to communicate even over short distances. This includes mating songs, cooperative signals about food, cries that indicate social, status and alarm calls for danger. Without natural sounds, complex animal life can hardly boom.
Apart from habitat destruction, human noise pollution also leads to terrible results. Modern machines pump huge amounts of sound into water and air, making it impossible for many species to hear one another. The noise problem is most serious in the oceans, where earthquake exploration, shipping and sonar produce deafening sound, making large ocean areas uninhabitable for many marine species.
Mankind is also seriously affected by environmental noise. Complaints about noise pollution can date back to the earliest cities, recorded on ancient Babylonia clay walls. Modern environmental noise is no mere inconvenience. The European Environment Agency estimates that environmental noise in Europe causes 12,000 untimely deaths and 48,000 new cases of heart disease every year.
So what can be done to solve these problems? Besides scientific research on vocal loss, public activism and strict policy-making to reduce noise pollution and habitat destruction, people should keep a simple habit: learn to listen. Just as we enjoy concerts with friends, we can spend time listening to birds in city parks. In this simple act, we can build a close connection with nature and gain inspiration for environmental protection.
32.What does the underlined word “distinctive” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Similar B.Special C.Familiar D.Natural
33.Why do animals in rainforests and oceans rely on sound?
A.Sound helps them avoid human activities.
B.Sound is their only way of short-distance communication.
C.They have no other senses to adapt to habitats.
D.Sound enables them to travel long distances.
34.What can we learn about environmental noise from the text?
A.It only harms marine species in deep oceans. B.It has existed for a very long time in human history.
C.It merely brings people minor inconvenience. D.It causes more heart disease than other illnesses.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Damage and Protection of Natural Vocal World
B.Various Communication Ways of Wild Animals
C.The Serious Harm of Modern Noise Pollution
D.Amazing Natural Sounds on the Earth

World Savings Day is a holiday. 36 This holiday encourages everyone to think about the importance of starting a savings account. It wants everyone to realize that they should have at least 3-6 months’ worth of expenses (开支) in their savings account.
People should celebrate World Savings Day and make sure their financial (财务的) house is in good order. If people spend $2,000 a month, they’ll need to have anywhere from $6,000 to $12,000 in savings. 37 So people are more able to deal with any possible, sudden situation that needs much money.
38 World Savings Day was first imagined as International Savings Day and it was organized by the First International Savings Bank Congress that was held in Milan, Italy in 1924. The purpose of them creating this holiday was to encourage people not to keep their money at home but to place it in banks. 39 After the end of WWII, economies (经济) were being rebuilt and people had more money in their pockets. As a result, this holiday became popular as World Savings Day.
This holiday can be celebrated in several ways. First, a person can find out how much he needs to spend in a certain period and make a plan to save money every week. They can think of this as paying themselves first before spending money on things that are not necessary. Besides, people can spread the news about saving online. 40
A.Why was this holiday created?
B.So, this holiday can be helpful.
C.How did this holiday come into being?
D.It is celebrated on the 31st of October each year.
E.Surely, it’s even better to have more savings than that.
F.This is also a good day for people to teach their kids about saving.
G.After all, it was safer to put money in banks than placing it under the bed.

An Act of Neighborliness
The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops, and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, trudging (步履艰难地走) through streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely soaked in the heavy rain. Their umbrellas had been turned inside out by the fierce wind, and they held onto their coats tightly, desperate to find shelter.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, their faces pale with cold. I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the sudden storm. There were few warning signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard faint sounds above the howling wind. It sounded like children crying — weak, desperate, and terrified. I quickly turned back and retraced my steps to the place from where the cries came. My heart pounded. To my sadness and horror, I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had been washed away by the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the child, for darkness had already fallen, and the rain blurred my vision. All I could make out was a tiny hand reaching up from the hole, grasping at the slippery edge. I shouted, “Don’t be afraid! I’m going to get help!” The child sobbed but nodded weakly. I knew the neighbors well — they all shared a strong sense of neighborliness, always willing to lend a hand.

M: Hi, everyone. I’m Darren Biggs, a travel blogger from the USA. I’d love to share my story with you. So, how I decided to become a travel blogger? I wanted a job that would give me something to look forward to every day. And I realized I was spending less and less time doing the things I truly enjoyed, like writing and travelling. So becoming a blogger and writing about my travels made complete sense. Then how did I pick where to go first? Well, unlike my usual picks like Paris or London, I chose Hainan in China as my first place to go. And it was amazing!
Now you might be wondering how I support myself. Some bloggers focus on hiking, which requires proper clothing, and get paid for recommending clothes in their posts. I thought about teaching English, but I didn’t have much time. Luckily, I landed a deal with a company that was interested in the pictures I took on my travels.
During the journey, I have met people living in tough conditions who never give up, and it’s shown me the importance of keeping up. Through my blogs, I hope I’ve opened people’s eyes to the beauty of our world.
A
July is just around the corner.
21.What do the theatres have in common?
A.They offer outdoor activities. B.They are built in woodlands.
C.They are only open in summer. D.They put on open-air performances.

【答案】24.C 25.B 26.C 27.D

根据原文第三段“Since the programme, he makes it his mission to understand as much as he can about the people he works with, and the context and culture he’s operating within.(自参加该项目后,他把尽可能了解共事的人以及所处的环境和文化当作自己的任务。)”
根据第一段“This was not always easy, and he spent a lot of time managing cultural conflicts.(这一路走来并不轻松,他花费了大量时间去化解文化冲突。)”及最后一段“Now, Antony’s constant learning and his deeply considered work at Unilever has been so successful that he is moving to Uganda to head up a new role there.(如今,安东尼在联合利华坚持学习、做事深思熟虑,工作成效斐然,因此他将前往乌干达担任新的管理职务。)”
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.A 31.D
根据第一段“Before you book the plane ticket, it’s a good idea to think carefully about living abroad.(在预订机票之前,最好仔细考虑一下出国生活。)”
根据第三段“Americans in Europe and South America often find that medical care is both cheaper and easier to get than in the United States. For example, everyone can get a dental checkup for only around $ 20 in Turkey.(在欧洲和南美洲的美国人常常发现,医疗费用比在美国更低,而且就医也更方便。例如,在土耳其,每个人只需约20美元就能进行一次牙科检查。)”可知,在土耳其做牙科检查相较于美国会很便宜,仅需20美元。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“The work that the ordinary Americans can do abroad usually pays better than what the ordinary locals do.(普通美国人海外工作通常比本地人获得的收入更高。)”
纵观全文,尤其根据第一段第一句“Living abroad is not for everyone.(出国留学并不适合每个人。)”
【答案】32.B 33.B 34.B 35.A

根据第二段“However, in habitats such as thick rainforests or oceans, sound is the only effective way for most animals to communicate even over short distances. (然而,在茂密的雨林或海洋等栖息地中,即使在短距离内,声音也是大多数动物进行交流的唯一有效方式。)”可知,雨林和海洋中的动物依赖声音因为声音是它们进行短距离交流的唯一方式。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“Complaints about noise pollution can date back to the earliest cities, recorded on ancient Babylonia clay walls. (有关噪音污染的投诉可以追溯到最早的城市,这些记录出现在古代巴比伦的泥墙之上。)”可知,环境噪音在人类历史上存在了非常久远的时间。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“We live in a world of vocal wonder, yet this biological sound richness is being severely damaged worldwide.

39.根据前文“The purpose of them creating this holiday was to encourage people not to keep their money at home but to place it in banks.(他们设立这个节日的目的是鼓励人们不要把钱存放在家中,而是存入银行。)” G“After all, it was safer to put money in banks than placing it under the bed.(毕竟,把钱存入银行比藏在床底下更安全。)”
40.根据前文“This holiday can be celebrated in several ways. First, a person can find out how much he needs to spend in a certain period and make a plan to save money every week.(人们有多种方式庆祝这个节日。首先,人们可以算出一段时期的总开销,制定每周存钱计划。)”以及“Besides, people can spread the news about saving online.(此外,人们可以在网上宣传储蓄相关理念。)” F“This is also a good day for people to teach their kids about saving.(这也是家长教导孩子储蓄知识的好日子。)”

56.a 57.with 58.features 59.shyness 60.memorable 61.protects 62.heavily 63.To promote 64.trying 65.when
此处为固定搭配be crowded with,意为“挤满……”,所以此处为介词with。
New Year’s Day and the Spring Festival,表时间,所以用关系副词when。
