Growing up, I was scared of being the center of attention. As the quiet daughter of a military family that moved every two years, I struggled to make friends across three different countries. My accent shifted awkwardly between British and American English, making classroom readings a nightmare. Determined to break free from my shell, I joined my high school drama club—a decision that terrified me more than moving to a new neighborhood.
The first month felt impossible. While others memorized lines effortlessly, I stumbled over self-introduction, my palms sweating under the stage lights. Our director’s improvisation (即兴) exercises were the worst. She’d shout unexpected plots like “You’re an astronaut discovering aliens!”, giving us ten seconds to react. My mind would blank with a lump in my throat.
Yet week after week, something changed. The supportive laughter of my peers replaced my fear of embarrassment. By junior year, I landed a supporting role in our town, delivering lines without trembling. The real breakthrough came during a snowstorm performance when our lead actor fell ill. With only an hour’s notice, I stepped into the role and remembered every line.
This courage spilled into other areas. I began leading history class discussions and volunteered as a tour guide for exchange students. At university, I joined a debate club, using my drama-trained voice to argue environmental policies. Last month, I even hosted a charity auction (拍卖) for 50 guests—something my 15-year-old self would consider unimaginable.
Do I still get nervous? Absolutely. But I’ve learned that imperfection connects us. When I mispronounced during the auction, the crowd chuckled warmly, not cruelly. Now I view each stumble not as failure, but proof that I’m daring to speak up.
24.What made the author uncomfortable during classroom activities?
A.She frequently moved house. B.She met language confusion.
C.She hated reading class. D.She lacked team spirits.
25.What does the underlined word “stumbled over” in the second paragraph mean?
A.Fell over suddenly. B.Spoke out freely.
C.Repeated words constantly. D.Kept in mind easily.
26.How did drama club participation affect the author’s later life?
A.It affected her academic performance. B.It developed her painting skills.
C.It caused serious performance anxiety. D.It increased her social confidence.
27.What does the auction incident show about the author’s growth?
A.She avoids challenging events. B.She focuses on others’ faults.
C.She accepts human imperfection. D.She prioritizes financial success.

Some middle school students in Anne Arundel County are trying to solve a problem for one of their peers who uses a wheelchair. By doing so, they won a major award for their school, and it has qualified them for a nationwide competition.
Southern Middle School students and their science teacher, Jenna Borman, are working on a prototype desk that they hope to attach to the wheelchair of their classmate, Kenneth, who has a special disease and uses a laptop as his primary means of communication.
“At present, the iPad is in a pretty heavy case and has a strap (带子) that goes around his neck and a handle on the back of it for him to hold. When he's seated, it kind of just lays in his lap. It's not very easy for him to use,” Borman said. “Kenneth always has to hold his iPad, and so this project is going to help him just set it there so his hands are free, ” said Julia Baker to the social media, a student of this school.
What started off as an engineering after-school program has turned into an award-winning idea. The students recently won a statewide Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) competition called “Solve for Tomorrow”, which came with $12, 000 worth of technology for the school.
“We thought it was just an idea for Kenny, and then we won. So, it was like, wow, ”said Avery Willet excitedly.
“This whole project is really teaching us about how to work together and how we can help other people and not just us, ” added Everleigh Finnelle.
“I learned how to work with others and a lot of teamwork so that we could make this project the best it could be, ” said Haley Brown.
“There is still room for improvement. Our team is working on the prototype, making adjustments so it works perfectly for Kenny. We're really most looking forward to seeing him using it and all of our work into it, ” Finnelle said.
The final design is not due for the national competition until next month.
28.Why did the students come up with the idea of the prototype desk?
A.To test what they've learnt in school. B.To join a national technology contest.
C.To support a classmate's special need. D.To complete a group engineering project.
29.How did the students find their winning of the STEM award?
A.Satisfying. B.Surprising. C.Comforting. D.Convincing.
30.What is Finnelle’s attitude to the future of the prototype desk?
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Cautious.
31.What is the main idea of this text?
A.A competition is gaining popularity. B.A team won an award with a special design.
C.A new invention will come onto the market. D.A program fuels students’ passion for science.

A campus in Ningbo invites students to free their minds
A teaching building with an indoor “forest”, a rooftop park offering views of the entire city, and pathways lined with facilities such as a gym, library, and auditorium (礼堂) ‑ these are features of Huizhen High School’s campus in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
Ma Di, an architect in his early 40s, is the designer of the campus. He said that he got the inspiration from his daughter who was happy to study at home during the pandemic. “The design of her school makes her feel depressed sometimes,” Ma said. “Traditional middle school campus design usually stresses efficiency and designers want to squeeze (塞入) as many teaching facilities as possible in a limited space.”
To him, however, allowing students to feel “purposeless” is as important as teaching them knowledge in the classroom. “In my design, there are no rules, no defined functions, no traditional concept of rooms and floors,” explained Ma.
For example, to allow students to embrace nature, Ma designed a teaching building that has a huge “forest in the air” embedded (嵌入) in the building, with plants protruding (伸出) from all directions. Atop the building is a rooftop park, with tall grass waving gently like falling snow. After dinner, students walk, daydream or watch the sky there. “It’s like the school vanishes (消失) from sight, freeing their imagination,” said Ma.
Besides his philosophy on educational building design, Ma also wants students to have fun in the teaching building and “feel like they can do whatever they want with the space”.
To achieve this, he eliminated traditional floor concepts in the “forest in the air”, with corridors weaving through treetops. This setup allows one to move up and down within the “forest”, with different paths intersecting (相交) unexpectedly, creating small adventures. Additionally, flexible room designs let students tailor (量身打造) spaces to their preferences, transforming some into mini aquariums (水族馆) and radio stations.
Thanks to his innovative approach to architecture, Ma’s design for Huizhen High School won the World Building of the Year 2023 award at the 2023 World Architecture Festival. “To me, the best architecture always invites the inhabitants (居住者) to keep on creating when using the space,” Ma said. “I’m so glad to see students enjoying and being creative here in this design.”
32.What inspired Ma Di’s design for Huizhen High School’s campus?
A.His daughter’s love of forests.
B.His own experience as a student.
C.A visit to a traditional middle school.
D.His daughter’s home study experience.
33.What is Ma Di’s design philosophy?
A.Prioritizing openness and freedom.
B.Striving for architectural complexity.
C.Making the best use of teaching facilities.
D.Combining efficiency with functionality.
34.What is the primary function of the rooftop park, according to Ma?
A.A reminder of the need for environmental protection.
B.A space for leisure and relaxation.
C.An escape from academic pressures.
D.A place for space observation.
35.Which of the following best describes the teaching building?
A.Practical and sustainable.
B.Classic and entertaining.
C.Innovative and interactive.
D.Multifunctional and spacious.

Xena Biffert, a district science consultant, started to do a lot of backward planning when taking students outside to meet curricular (课程的) outcomes. This approach allows curriculum connection and encourages students’ focus and interest to lead the way. Here are four tips for practicing backward planning with your students. 36
Know your curriculum.
Many topics arise organically, and you can cover them through mini-lessons along the way. One way to deepen that knowledge is to print it out and make a habit of reviewing it daily. 37 First, you develop a familiarity with it. Second, you can see where you can make that connection naturally where the students’ interests meet.
Begin the year with a learning plan and a mind map.
Having guiding questions has helped Xena form and follow a plan for the year. 38 For example, “How are we all interconnected?” and “What is our story?” She can assess outcomes using this plan throughout the school year.
Get students outside regularly.
39 . This culture creates an opportunity to form and answer questions about what happens outdoors and how it connects to other topics. As the emergent learning arises and there is daily reflection on it, knowledge and understanding emerge. Through this intentional work and reflection, teachers will be well equipped to answer questions in the process.
40
It is important for students to reflect on their observations. We often don’t get time to reflect in our fast-paced classrooms. Often, reflection is combined with assessment. An easy starting point is journaling, because it is a thought process accessible to students in every grade.
A.Outside learning builds a culture.
B.Work out a plan for regular journaling.
C.Make time for student reflection like journaling.
D.Such guiding questions often arise in the backward planning.
E.These may allow you greater flexibility to do outdoor learning.

【原文】 W: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s Book Time, I’d like to introduce one of the best children’s books. The book is I Walk With Vanessa. This wonderful wordless picture book is for little ones aged 5 to 10 years old. It tells the story of a new girl in school, Vanessa. The new girl spends her first day in school all by herself. She does not join in the games, neither does she take part in the classroom activities. As soon as school is over, she leaves quickly. On her way home, she is badly treated by another child. A girl in her class sees this incident. That girl spends the entire evening thinking about what she saw, and what she can do to help. In the morning of the next day, she has an idea. She goes to Vanessa’s home and walks with her to school. Friends join the walk, and soon the entire school is walking with Vanessa. This wonderful picture book teaches children what to do if they see someone badly treated by others. And it also teaches children that a simple act of kindness can really help. Thank you for listening to our programme.

A campus in Ningbo invites students to free their minds
A teaching building with an indoor “forest”, a rooftop park offering views of the entire city, and pathways lined with facilities such as a gym, library, and auditorium (礼堂) these are features of Huizhen High School’s campus in Ningbo, Zhejiang.

F.Her reasoning for looking at the curriculum every day is twofold.
G.Xena creates a mind map using the big idea behind the questions.

F.Her reasoning for looking at the curriculum every day is twofold.
G.Xena creates a mind map using the big idea behind the questions.
