Penicillin: an accidental discovery that changed the world
Many people consider the discovery of penicillin to be a major turning point in the history of the world. Before penicillin, a simple cut or insect bite could lead to serious infection and even death. Similarly, diseases caused by bacteria were likely to kill patients within weeks or even days. Doctors tried their best, but their treatments often failed and many patients died.
It is hard to believe that this world-changing discovery happened by accident! In 1928, a scientist in London called Alexander Fleming came back from holiday to find his laboratory in a bit of a mess. He noticed there was mould growing in some of the laboratory dishes left lying around. As he sorted through them, he noticed something extraordinary. There were no bacteria in areas around the mould. Fleming found that a substance in the mould was killing the bacteria. He called it “penicillin” and was excited about using it to fight infections in humans. Sadly, Fleming did not have the money or equipment to develop his research further.
It was only in the 1940s that scientists in the United States were able to produce penicillin in large quantities. Other antibiotics were also developed during this period. Since then, antibiotics have been widely used to treat infections. However, in recent years, some people have become infected by bacteria that are able to survive antibiotic treatments. Because of these “superbugs”, it has become clear that we cannot rely completely on antibiotics in the future. Scientists are therefore working hard to find new ways to fight infections.

Step 3: While-reading
Discuss the questions in groups.
1. Why was the discovery of penicillin a major turning point?
Before penicillin, a simple cut or insect bite could lead to serious infection and even death. Similarly, diseases caused by bacteria were likely to kill patients within weeks or even days. Doctors tried their best, but their treatments often failed and many patients died.
Penicillin changed this situation and saved millions of lives, so it became a major turning point in medical history.

2. Why couldn’t Fleming develop his research further?
Because he did not have the money or equipment.

3. What problem are we facing with antibiotics now?
In recent years, some people have become infected by bacteria that are able to survive antibiotic treatments. Because of these “superbugs”, it has become clear that we cannot rely completely on antibiotics in the future.

Step 4: Post-reading
Fleming’s accidental discovery
What can we learn from Fleming’s accidental discovery?
We can learn that great scientific discoveries may happen by accident. We should also observe carefully and think deeply in our daily lives and studies.
Using antibiotics wisely
How should we use antibiotics wisely?
We should not rely completely on antibiotics. We must use them properly and avoid overusing them in order to prevent the emergence of “superbugs”.
