Under the dim light of an oil lamp, a man sat at a desk in an old house. With a writing brush in his hand, he was busy writing on a piece of paper.
It was early spring and the air was still cold. His hands were numb, but the task was so important that he couldn’t stop working. “It’s going to take me weeks,” he said to himself. Several days passed, and he always worked deep into the night. His mother was worried about his health, and she sometimes brought him some snacks at night.
Then one day, his mother came again.
“I have made some zongzi for you!” she said. “They taste better when dipped in the brown sugar sauce. I hope you’ll enjoy them. And go to bed early!”
“Thank you, Mum!” he said.
His mother left and he continued his work. He felt a bit hungry, so he reached for a zongzi, dipped it in, and then ate it.
When his mother later returned for the bowls, she was surprised to see that there was ink all around her son’s mouth.
“My son,” she said, “how were your zongzi?”
“They were delicious!” he replied.
“But you have ink all around your mouth!” she said. “You must have dipped them in the ink instead of the brown sugar sauce!”
“Ah!” he said with a big smile. “But the taste is so sweet!”
The man here was Chen Wangdao, a scholar and educator.
It is said that he was so concentrated on translating The Communist Manifesto that he didn’t realize he was eating ink! To Chen, “the taste of truth is so sweet”!
In 1920, in his home village in Zhejiang Province, Chen Wangdao made the first Chinese translation of The Communist Manifesto. His strong belief in Marxism helped him complete the difficult translation work. The book inspired many of the early communist pioneers to fight for a better future for the people.

The Curies
A small amount of radioactive material is given to a patient. An image is produced which shows the inside of the patient’s body. This is a safe procedure for the patient and it gives doctors important information. It helps them to decide what is wrong with the patient and how to treat it. This is nuclear medicine. The methods have changed greatly over the years. In fact, the story of nuclear medicine began more than a hundred years ago.
It all started with an important discovery by two scientists in France in 1902. These two scientists were Marie and Pierre Curie. They discovered an extremely radioactive substance called radium. Radium is so radioactive that it gives off a pale blue glow. The Curies found that this powerful element could be used to kill cancer cells. Their discovery changed science forever and led to the beginning of nuclear medicine.
The Curies’ daughter, Irene Joliot-Curie continued their investigations and ended up developing artificial radioactive substances. These substances are still used in nuclear medicine today – in investigations and in the treatment of disease.
The Curies were exposed to large amounts of radiation during their work. At the time, the harmful effects of radiation were not completely understood. We can see the scarring caused by handling radium on Marie Curie’s hands. Sadly, their exposure to radiation meant that Marie and Irene both died of leukaemia before they were 70 years old. The Curies changed science and the world with their extraordinary work and we continue to benefit from their discoveries today.

You must have dipped them in the ink instead of the brown sugar sauce.
谓语must have dipped 是一个对过去情况的推测结构,“must have done”表示“想必/ 肯定已经做了某事”。本句意为:“你肯定是把粽子蘸进了墨
水里,而不是红糖酱里。
It is said that he was so concentrated on translating The Communist Manifesto that he didn’t realize he was eating ink!
主句“It is said that ...” 中的it 是形式主语,真正的主语是that 引导的从句。so concentrated on ... that ... 是so ... that ... 结构引导的结果状语从句,该从句中又嵌套了一个省略that 的宾语从句,“he was eating ink”是realize 的宾语。本句意为:“据说他翻译《共产党宣言》时过于专注,以至于没有意识到自己是在吃墨水!”
