The fashion industry significantly influences our environment, from major international events to daily clothing. The chart below reveals the hidden environmental cost of fashion weeks last year. These estimates are conservative, as they only include travel emissions from designers and buyers, not other participants.
But the problem is much bigger than these events. Fast fashion encourages people to treat clothes as disposable. Clothes stores change their product ranges every few weeks, generating a constant production cycle that causes significant damage to nature. To understand the true cost, we can look at a common item: a pair of jeans.
Production: The stage is responsible for the emission of about 13 kilograms of CO2.
→
Dyeing(染色): The stage consumes over 2,000 liters of water and 10 liters of chemicals and dyes.
→
Washing: The stage requires over 1,000 liters of water.
Overall, the industry accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions (排放) and 20% of water pollution, leading the UN to declare an "environmental emergency." In response, a shift is beginning. For major fashion events, new formats combining virtual platforms and real-life elements aim to reduce the carbon footprint of global travel. Beyond the runway, a new initiative is taking shape. The expanding influence of online communication helps raise sustainability awareness, encouraging mindful consumption and driving industry change.
1. Which fashion week had the most serious environmental impact?
A. Milan. B. London. C. Paris. D. New York.
2. What is the minimum amount of water required in processing a pair of jeans?
A. 1000 liters. B. 2000 liters. C. 3000 liters. D. 3010 liters.
3. What change is the fashion industry experiencing regarding sustainability?
A. Reducing event scales. B. Employing digital power.
C. Seeking policy support. D. Using cheaper materials.
B
On a cold and wet evening in south London, a group of runners are doing something a little different. There are no exercise machines or gym mirrors in sight. Instead, they’re moving earth, clearing weeds, and smiling through the mud on a garden. Their warm-up was a one-mile jog through the city to get there.
This is GoodGym in action. It’s a growing movement that’s redefining what it means to work out. The organization invites people to “get fit by doing good”, blending physical activity with hands-on community service. Members run, walk, or cycle to local projects that could range from sorting cans at a food bank, planting fruit trees, visiting an older adult, or moving furniture for someone in need.
The idea began back in 2007 when founder Ivo Gormley started running to deliver a newspaper to an elderly neighbor. At the time, he was feeling out of shape and missed the friendship of his old basketball team.
“I just didn’t like that idea of going to a gym, going into a basement and lifting things that don’t really need lifting,” Gormley said. “I thought I could do something more useful in my exercise.”
He started organizing runs to places in need of helping hands. The very first group tore down outdated posters in his east London neighborhood. Since then, GoodGym has grown into a registered charity with over 26,000 members in 67 locations. Now it’s aiming to expand into Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Though few other organizations blend exercise and volunteering in quite the same way, Gormley believes the concept taps into something timeless. “It’s what people have always done, right?” he said. “You grow some food literally through the action of planting and digging. That’s where your exercise comes from.”
4. Why does the author describe the runners working on a garden?
A. To applaud their efforts. B. To describe a tough task.
C. To compare different exercises. D. To introduce a new tendency.
5. What is the core value of GoodGym?
A. Diversifying fitness methods. B. Lending a hand during workouts.
C. Professionalizing volunteer work. D. Standardizing community service.
6. What inspired Gormley to start the organization?
A. His personal failure. B. His physical condition.
C. Influences from other runners. D. His reflection on workouts.
7. What does Gormley imply about GoodGym in the last paragraph?
A. It matches the idea of a natural lifestyle.
B. It highlights the benefits of physical labor.
C. It fills the gap in traditional physical training.
D. It acts as an ideal alternative for modern gyms.
C
Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas. Tit (山雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently. A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have colour.
Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn (纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the University of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following, too. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute’s researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood. Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors. Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue titles included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nest-builder.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend”, when it comes to nest-building materials. But why that should happen remains obscure. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a title. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Yarn was an ideal material for birds’ nests.
B. Early bird’s preference was copied by others.
C. Birds’ favorite colour was completely random.
D. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin contributed to William’s work.
9. How did Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin improve William’s experiment?
A. They studied the habits of blue titles.
B. They observed the nests of blue titles.
C. They adopted the data-collecting method.
D. They fitted tracking devices to food containers.
10. What does the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Unclear. B. Evident. C. Complicated. D. Shallow.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B. Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C. Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D. Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.
D
Spending time in space might sound thrilling, but it takes a serious impact on the human body. Weightlessness affects everything from muscles to blood flow. Hence, before astronauts head to the Moon or Mars, scientists must find ways to reduce the physical effects of long-term space travel.
To help, ten healthy male volunteers aged from 20 to 40 with no allergies or dietary restrictions signed up for an unusual challenge, agreeing to spend ten days lying flat in a lab in France. Run by the European Space Agency (ESA), the experiment began on March 13, 2025, where the volunteers stayed in bathtub-like containers covered with waterproof fabric, floating chest-deep in water (arms and heads above surface). These temporary waterbeds were designed to make like the weightlessness experienced in space. Meals were eaten flat on their backs, with pillows folded behind for support. Even bathroom trips were an adventure. The volunteers had to stay stretched out while being rolled away on a handcart!
This method, called dry immersion, offers a cheaper and simpler way to study how the body reacts to the absence of gravity. It produces many of the same effects, including blood rushing to the head and bone and muscle loss. After the ten-day immersion, the volunteers stayed at the lab for another five days for medical tests and recovery routines, which allowed the researchers to monitor how their bodies adjusted to normal conditions. Ten days after leaving the facility, the men returned for a final checkup to ensure there were no persistent effects from the experiment.
ESA scientists believe that data from this study—and others like it—will be key to preparing astronauts for deep-space missions. However, the benefits of this research could also be of use to help people on Earth. Studying how the body responds to long periods of inactivity might lead to better treatments for laid-up patients, the elderly, and those with mobility issues.
“Bridging the gap between spaceflight and ground-based research is essential for human space exploration,” said Marc-Antoine Custaud, who led the study. “Our findings have significant implications for Earth-based medicine, particularly in age-related conditions.”
12. What did volunteers have to do during the experiment?
A. They needed to taste a variety of food.
B. They had to stay in a space-like environment.
C. They were kept dry during the whole process.
D. They were involved in the research for ten days in total.
13. Who might benefit from the research?
A. Patients with blood disease.
B. Astronauts with social issues.
C. Seniors with limited health checkup.
D. Youngsters with movement problems.
14. What did Custaud emphasize about the research?
A. Its process. B. Its meaning. C. Its principle. D. Its application.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Space Travel: Its profound Benefits for Zero-Gravity Research.
B. ESA’s Dry Immersion Experiment: A good way to Study Universe.
C. Lying Flat for Science: Ten Volunteers Joined to Aid Space Travel.
D. The Impact of Weightlessness: How Astronauts Cope with Space Travel.

For many, the idea of “the perfect” commute (通勤) might sound laughable. If we travel to an office, it’s likely to involve either peak-time public transport or stressful traffic. ___16___ But there are things we can do to make them more enjoyable, productive and healthier.
So where to start? ___17___ Creating a visual representation of how much commuting takes out of your day gives an accurate picture. It’s not just about how much free time you have left; it’s about seeing how commuting affects other activities in your life.
The point is to get creative about how to maximize your available time. One strategy is to add new habits to your commute, which might mean building fitness into journeys by cycling, or walking part of the way. ___18___ That adds up to about five hours a week that people who commute every day have to themselves.
___19___ It offers a structured, regular window to focus on an idea or project. In Cal Newport’s bestseller Deep Work, he suggests using chunks (大块) of time to focus deeply on one topic. “So if you’re stuck on a bus, you could use the time to brainstorm a specific idea, either for work or a personal project,” he says.
This does sound appealing. What if I could reframe my commute as daily creative brainstorming sessions? ___20___ I have a friend who wrote a novel on his daily commute from Brighton to London. Perhaps the perfect commute isn’t about perfect conditions — it’s about perfecting how we use the time we have.
A. This isn’t just wishful thinking.
B. Begin by blocking it out on a calendar.
C. Commuting holds a hidden opportunity.
D. It is never enjoyable to be stuck in traffic.
E. You wouldn’t think either offers much joy.
F. Or you could use the time to learn a foreign language.
G. It might also mean anything that takes us out of work mode.

The smell of roasted chicken filled the kitchen as we gathered for our usual Friday dinner. Having swallowed a big mouthful of chicken, I took a deep breath and began, “Could I invite some friends over tomorrow? Just for the afternoon?”
My parents exchanged a glance, then nodded readily. But beside me, my younger sister, Lily, froze. Her wide eyes locked onto mine. “But... what about Miracle? She’ll be terrified, Ethan.”
Miracle was a cat Lily rescued on a rainy day last winter. True to her name, the cat had survived. Yet, it remained a creature of profound shyness: Loud voices sent her trembling under beds; sudden movements made her jump. She wasn’t just a pet; she was a fragile soul Lily fiercely protected.
“I promise, Lily,” I insisted, leaning forward, meeting her worried gaze(凝视). “We’ll stay in the living room. No loud music, no shouting games. I’ll keep the back door shut tight, and I’ll warn everyone to be quiet. Miracle won’t even know they’re here.” I saw the conflict in her eyes — her desire to be supportive warring with her deep concern for the poor cat. After a tense silence, she finally gave a small, reluctant nod.
Saturday arrived with sunshine and laughter as my friends piled in. True to my word, I guided them straight to the living room, reminding them firmly about Miracle’s sensitivity.Initially, we chatted, played cards quietly. Glancing around, I spotted Miracle sliding silently down the hallway towards Lily’s room. Good, she’s keeping her distance, I thought, relieved.
As the afternoon wore on, however, the initial caution disappeared. A competitive board game led to enthusiastic cheers and laughter. Lost in the sheer fun of being with my friends, I forgot everything - he promise, the fragile creature.
After friends departed with cheerful goodbyes, I began tidying empty glasses, still lost in the happy scenes when Lily burst through the front door into her room. Then came her scream, “Ethan, Miracle is gone.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

D 5. B 6. D 7. A

B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第二段中的“He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn (纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.(他注意到,当他在花园里放上各种颜色的毛线球时,几乎总是只有一种颜色在那个季节变得流行,被当地的鸟放进巢里。但哪种特定的颜色受青睐每个季节都不同。这表明,一只早期鸟类选择的颜色被其他鸟发现并模仿了。)”可知,早期鸟类对颜色的偏好被其他鸟模仿了。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第三段中的“Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.(因此,Wild博士和Aplin博士着手重新进行Williams的实验,但这次要收集一些实际的数据。)”
根据最后一段中的“Tits, then, do seem to be ‘on trend’, when it comes to nest-building materials. But why that should happen remains obscure.(那么,说到筑巢材料,山雀似乎确实‘跟上了潮流’。但为什么会这样仍然obscure。)”可知,前文肯定了山雀有追随潮流的现象,但转折词“But”暗示了对原因的解释尚不明确。“obscure”意为“模糊不清的、费解的”,与“Unclear”意思相近。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。 根据第一段中的“Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas. Tits (山雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently.(人类并不是动物王国里唯一的时尚达人。显然,山雀也可以是时尚的追随者。)”以及全文围绕山雀像人类一样追随色彩潮流展开的内容可知,文章主旨是鸟类和人类一样有时尚意识。

E 17. B 18. F 19. C 20. A
根据上文“For many, the idea of “the perfect” commute (通勤) might sound laughable. If we travel to an office, it’s likely to involve either peak-time public transport or stressful traffic. (对于许多人来说,“完美的通勤”这一概念或许听起来有些荒谬。如果我们要去办公室上班,那很可能会遭遇高峰时段的公共交通拥堵或者令人焦虑的交通状况。)”可知,前文提到通勤通常是两种糟糕的情况:高峰公共交通、拥堵堵车,E选项“你不会觉得这两种情况能带来多少乐趣。”承接上文,再衔接后文转折“但我们有办法让通勤变得更愉悦”,逻辑通顺。
【17题详解】
根据上文“So where to start? (那么从哪里开始呢?)”以及后文“Creating a visual representation of how much commuting takes out of your day gives an accurate picture. It’s not just about how much free time you have left; it’s about seeing how commuting affects other activities in your life. (绘制出通勤所占用你一天时间的可视化展示,能为你提供一个准确的直观印象。这不仅仅关乎你剩余的自由时间有多少;更重要的是要看到通勤如何影响你生活中的其他活动。)”可知,前文提问“该从哪里开始?”,B选项“先把通勤时间标注在日历上。”回答了“如何开始”,也对应后文提到的“做一个可视化展示,看通勤占用了多少时间”,内容匹配。
【18题详解】
根据上文“One strategy is to add new habits to your commute, which might mean building fitness into journeys by cycling, or walking part of the way. (一种策略是将新的习惯融入通勤过程中,这可能意味着通过骑自行车或步行一部分路程来将锻炼融入日常出行中)”可知,前文举例“可以把健身融入通勤,比如骑车或走一段路”,F选项“或者你也可以用这段时间学外语。”继续举例不同的通勤时间利用方式,衔接后文“That adds up to about five hours a week that people who commute every day have to themselves. (这意味着每天通勤的人每周能拥有大约五个小时的个人时间。)”,逻辑连贯。
【19题详解】
根据后文“It offers a structured, regular window to focus on an idea or project. In Cal Newport’s bestseller Deep Work, he suggests using chunks (大块) of time to focus deeply on one topic. “So if you’re stuck on a bus, you could use the time to brainstorm a specific idea, either for work or a personal project,” he says.
根据上文“This does sound appealing. What if I could reframe my commute as daily creative brainstorming sessions? (这听起来确实很有吸引力。那如果我能把通勤时间转变成每天的创意头脑风暴时间呢?)”以及后文“I have a friend who wrote a novel on his daily commute from Brighton to London. Perhaps the perfect commute isn’t about perfect conditions — it’s about perfecting how we use the time we have.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Luckily, we finally found Miracle in the backyard.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A cold wave of fear rushed through me. I remembered opening the backdoor for some air. Miracle must have got scared out of the house then. My sister looked at me in disbelief. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over. “You promised” The words weren’t shouted, but they cut deep. Shame burned my face. Without a word, I grabbed a flashlight and raced into the backyard, Lily closely behind, her calls for Miracle now desperate and choked with tears. We searched like crazy.
Luckily, we finally found Miracle in the backyard. There hidden under the thick bushes was Miracle. I dropped to my knees and scooped it up gently and placed it into Lily’s waiting hands. Once we went back home, I apologized sincerely, “I am so, so sorry.” I slowly reached out towards Lily, placing my hand gently over hers. “Can you forgive me?” Lily looked down at Miracle, then back at me, her eyes still wet but softening slightly. A fragile bridge of forgiveness began to form.
