A team of Cambridge psychologists conducted an experiment to compare the cognitive()
effects of merely seeing art with actively judging how beautiful it is.
In the study,187 people were invited to visit Kettle's Yard gallery during an exhibition of hand-
made clay objects.Participants were randomly divided into two groups:the "beauty"group was
asked to actively consider and then rate the beauty of each object they viewed, while the control group
just matched a line drawing of the object with the artwork itself. All participants were then tested on
how they process information, and whether it's in a more practical or abstract way.
Across all participants, those in the beauty group scored almost 14%higher on average than the
control group in abstract thinking. While they were told the study was about cognitive processes,
participants were asked about interests, with around half saying they had an artistic hobby.Among
those, the effect was greater:those with an artistic hobby in the beauty group scored over 25%high-
er on average for abstract thinking than those with an artistic hobby in the control group.
Emotional states of participants were also measured by asking about their feelings while comple-
ting the gallery task.Across all participants, those in the beauty group reported an average of 23%
higher levels of "transformative and self-transcendent feelings"-such as feeling moved, enlightened
and inspired-than the control group.Importantly, however, the beauty group did not report feeling
any happier than the control group, suggesting that it was the engagement with beauty that influ-
enced abstract thinking, rather than any overall positivity from the experience.
"We usually think in very concrete terms when doing something on a screen,"said Simone
Schnall, senior author of the study."It's becoming much rarer to zone out and just let the mind wan-
der,but that's when we think in ways that broaden our minds.Admiring the beauty of art may be the
ideal way to initiate the abstract cognitive processes."
32.What was the beauty group asked to do with the clay objects?
A.Draw their outlines.
B.Give each piece a rating.
C.Compare their prices.
D.Make a copy of each piece.
33.Which participants got the highest score on average in the test?
A.Beauty group,with an artistic hobby.
B.Beauty group,without an artistic hobby.
C.Control group,with an artistic hobby.
D.Control group,without an artistic hobby.
34.Why were the participants'emotional states measured?
A.To discover their attitudes towards art.
B.To identify their specific thinking patterns.
C.To examine the difficulty of the tasks.
D.To determine factors behind the test results.
35.What is the major finding of the study regarding the appreciation of art?
A.It enhances emotional ties.
B.It needs critical thinking skills.
C.It creates positive feelings.
D.It encourages abstract thinking.

Human beings have always loved reviews:word of mouth has long been regarded as one of the
most valuable marketing tools available to a company.Consumers enjoy reading and giving reviews.
However, the problem is that a lot of the reviews are fake ()Shabnam Azimi and Alexander
Krasnikov of Loyola University of Chicago and Kwong Chan of Northeastern University recently pub-
lished a study on fake reviews.
The study used a data set of 1600 reviews of Chicago hotels. Some of them were real;others
were fake. The reviews were presented to 400 subjects. Each subject got eight reviews to read:a bal-
anced set of two positive fake, two positive real, two negative fake and two negative real, presented
in a random order. The reviews were written by real people who were given information about the ho-
tel.
The results show that consumers generally trust negative reviews more than positive ones.Mo-
reover,we humans tend to assume that positive reviews might be fake."Overall, negative reviews
are less common. So,we pay more attention to them. When a negative review is fake,we get
tricked,”Azimi says.
When it came to faking a review, length was important to believability,as was detail.A long,
negative review of a hotel, complete with lots of information, tended to convince participants.A
lengthy, positive review,on the other hand, was regarded as suspicious, and participants tended to
trust writers that kept their glowing reviews short.Emotion was also important in convincing readers
-or the lack of emotion,at least.Azimi says study participants tended not to trust reviews where
the writers expressed their feelings in a big way.The more dispassionate that negative write-up,the
more likely it was to take the reader in.
The fake reviews written for Azimi's study were put together by humans, but increasingly, fake
reviews are being written by AI,which makes them look more real.Though many companies use al-
gorithms (to weed out fake reviews,Azimi points out that the machines are programmed by
humans, and given our limited ability to spot fake reviews, this isn't a good sign.
28.Which aspect of the study does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.Its design.
B.Its findings.
C.Its purposes.
D.Its significance.
29.What does the underlined word "glowing"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Funny.
B.Abusive.
C.Insightful.
D.Praising.
30.What kind of review would readers most likely trust?
A.A long,positive one.
B.An unemotional,negative one.
C.A short,negative one.
D.An enthusiastic,positive one.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Many companies are producing fake reviews.
B.Writing fake reviews will be declared illegal.
C.Machines can detect fake reviews accurately.
D.It will be harder to recognize fake reviews.

In my ninth-grade writing class last year,I met a cowboy who saved his town,a strict father
who demanded his son earn straight A's,and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her
parents rejected the love of her young life.More than once,I found myself wondering just how my
students, who'd created these people, knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question:"Why is writing
important?"Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be
interpreted as a thesis()statement.I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the
question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing,in and of
好
itself, simply didn't strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started,I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of
their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments,
a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop,I only required that the piece meet
the specifications of its genre()and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The
students took on diverse topics and turned in stories,10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broad-
ened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However,
my students demonstrated something more important to me.When the final bell rang in June,I
walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing's most powerful significance-the ability to con-
nect people,to put us in another's skin,to teach us what it means to be human.
24.Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of Paragraph 1?
A.Ninth graders.
B.Students'parents.
C.Modern writers.
D.Fictional characters.
25.Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay?
A.They were not given enough time.
B.They had a very limited vocabulary.
C.They misunderstood the question.
D.They had little interest in the topic.
26.What does the underlined word "staggering"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Mixed.
B.Amazing.
C.Similar.
D.Disturbing.
27.What does the author's experience show?
A.Teaching is learning.
B.Still waters run deep.
C.Knowledge is power.

My great grandmother received the dollhouse(玩具小屋)from a family friend back in the late
1800s.It was then passed down from generation to generation.I was seven when I discovered it un-
derneath the tree on Christmas morning.
In our house,Mom set up a sewing area.I sat at her sewing machine,my feet barely reaching
the presser foot.Mom bent over me,her hands on mine, gently guiding small bits of cloth under the
needle to create dollhouse bedding. She also taught me to make mini-blankets.With a little paint and
glue,Mom demonstrated that anything could be turned into dollhouse furniture.I learnt to view the
world as a place of possibility.I spent hours of my girlhood sitting before my dollhouse, telling made-
餐
up stories, and creating miniatures ()But eventually school activities took over, and the
dollhouse was moved to the attic(阁楼).
Over the next 40 years, the storytelling skills I'd practiced with the dollhouse grew into novel
郑
writing skills, and I developed a career as an author. One day, after hours of working on my fourth
book,I took a break by surfing the Internet and happened to notice the beautiful dollhouses people
posted on social media. They reminded me of mine.I went to the attic, brought it back to my room
and started updating it.
During the mindless hours of sewing and furnishing(布置家具),I listened to audiobooks about
the history of dollhouses, learning that they were not invented for play. There's a long, rich history
of people in hardship turning to dollhouses to find comfort. They weren't produced as toys until mass
production became standard after 1945.This inspired me to create a novel where art saves the day.
The truth was I myself needed art to save the day.Mom was then slipping away from me owing
典郝
to progressive memory loss. The only topic we could discuss with any genuine joy was the update of
the dollhouse. She loved retelling its history-those old memories.Mom didn't find it strange at all
that her 50-year-old daughter was updating the dollhouse. She just thought it fun and beautiful. And
it was.It was a world where Mom and I were at our best together.
41.What did the author's mother teach her to do?
A.To sew and create miniatures.
B.To add imaginary figures to the dollhouse.
C.To make up fairy tales set in the dollhouse.

D.To do oil paintings and glue them onto the little walls.
42.Why did the author decide to update the dollhouse decades later?

B.She was eager to start a new career as a toy designer.
C.She felt the urge to compete with other dollhouse makers.
D.She was inspired by people sharing their dollhouses online.
43.What did the author learn about dollhouses from the audiobooks?

"I didn't like the ending,"I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of under-
graduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature.I had just finished reading
The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending.Prof.Gracie,with all
his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not.He suggested I think about
the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the
characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome.Of
course,I would have preferred a different ending for Tom and Maggie Tulliver, but the ending they
got did make the most sense for them.
This was an ah-ha moment for me,and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on,
if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy,I'd pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I
couldn't guess,I'd pick up a mystery().One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fic-
tion.Choosing what to read became easier.
But writing the end-that's hard. It's hard for writers because endings carry so much weight
with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that's unpredictable, but doesn't seem to come
from nowhere, one that fits what's right for the characters.
That's why this issue()of Writer's Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best
ending for whatever kind of writing you're doing. If it's short stories,Peter Mountford breaks down
six techniques you can try to see which one helps you stick the landing.Elizabeth Sims analyzes the
final chapters of five great novels to see what key points they include and how you can adapt them for
your work.
This issue won't tell you what your ending should be -that's up to you and the story you're
telling-but it might provide what you need to get there.
32.Why did the author go to Prof.Gracie?
A.To discuss a novel.
B.To submit a book report.
C.To argue for a writer.
D.To ask for a reading list.
33.What did the author realize after seeing Prof.Gracie?
A.Writing is a matter of personal preferences.
B.Readers are often carried away by characters.
C.Each type of literature has its unique ending.
D.A story which begins well will end well.
34.What is expected of a good ending?
A.It satisfies readers'taste.
B.It fits with the story development.

D.It is open for imagination.
35.Why does the author mention Peter Mountford and Elizabeth Sims?
A.To give examples of great novelists.

I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World. It was full of
ideas that were new to me,so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book.It spoke to me
and brought me into a world of philosophy(哲学).
That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college.Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster
than people who think they understand Foucault,Baudrillard,or Confucius better than you-and then
try to explain them.
Eric Weiner's The Socrates Express:In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers rea-
wakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience
philosophy.
Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each
philosopher's work in the context ()of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a
read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have
no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy,is a book about
learning to use philosophy to improve a life.
He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experi-
ences, and he does so with plenty of humor.Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most im-
portant philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding()
their messages and adding his own interpretation.
The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and
gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear:Weiner
wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book.I encourage you to take his offer. It's
worth your time, even if time is something we don't have a lot of.
28.Who opened the door to philosophy for the author?
A.Foucault.
B.Eric Weiner.
C.Jostein Gaarder.
D.A college teacher.
29.Why does the author list great philosophers in Paragraph 4?
A.To compare Weiner with them.
B.To give examples of great works.
C.To praise their writing skills.
D.To help readers understand Weiner's book.
30.What does the author like about The Socrates Express?
A.Its views on history are well-presented.
B.Its ideas can be applied to daily life.
C.It includes comments from readers.
D.It leaves an open ending.
31.What does the author think of Weiner's book?
A.Objective and plain.
B.Daring and ambitious.
C.Serious and hard to follow.
D.Humorous and straightforward.

Reading Art:Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object-the book, represented
here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader ap-
pears throughout history,in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In
artists'representations of books and reading,we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond cul-
ture and time.
In this "book of books, artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these con-
nections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at
school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations.Adults are portrayed()
alone in many settings and poses-absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leis-
ure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago,but they record moments we can all
relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect(),
wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects
and could be works of art in their own right.More recently,as books have become inexpensive or
even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks-transforming covers,pa-
ges or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed
page outdated. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it re-
mains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader.To serve its function,a book must be activated
by a user:the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or
words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we con-

course influenced the girls'decision to go to Elkhead.A hair-raising section concerns the building of
the railroads,which entailed()drilling through the Rockies,often in blinding snowstorms.The
book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism()of the people
move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff,on her horse, looking
down from a hill top:"When the sun slipped behind the mountains,it shed a rosy glow all around
them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals:foxes, coyotes, mice,
and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.

A.A news report.

Passage 1
Upcoming Football Events

据Nearby Hotels部分中的“Right across the street,
Sonder Lum Hotel offers spacious rooms and a rooftop
pooL.”

group was asked to actively consider and then rate the
beauty of each object they viewed”可知,研究人员要求
those, the effect was greater:those with an artistic
hobby in the beauty group scored over 25%higher on
average for abstract thinking than those with an artistic
hobby in the control group.”
tantly, however, the beauty group did not report feel-
ing any happier than the control group, suggesting that
it was the engagement with beauty that influenced ab-
stract thinking, rather than any overall positivity from
the experience.”
Admiring the
beauty of art may be the ideal way to initiate the ab-

work Statement:Please provide a brief statement (max-
imum 150 words)outlining your artwork concept.
、“Writing Submission:Submissions
must be a maximum of 250 words.It may be a stand-a-
lone piece such as a poem or short story or a part taken
from a larger piece.[文字投稿:投稿内容不得超过250
16
"Artist Biography:Please provide a short introduction
(maximum 50 words)to the artist written in the third
故选A项。
Passage 4
根据第二段中的“The study used a
data set of 1,600 reviews of Chicago hotels. Some of
them were real;others were fake. The reviews were
presented to 400 subjects. Each subject got eight re
views to read:a balanced set of two positive fake, two
positive real, two negative fake and two negative real,
presented in a random order. The reviews were written
by real people who were given information about the
review,on the other hand, was regarded as suspicious,
and participants tended to trust writers that kept their
根据第四段中的“A long,negative
review of a hotel, complete with lots of information,
The
more dispassionate that negative write-up,the more
likely it was to take the reader in.(负面评论越冷静客
written for Azimi's study were put together by humans,
but increasingly, fake reviews are being written by Al,
which makes them look more real.Though many com
panies use algorithms to weed out fake reviews,
Azimi points out that the machines are programmed by
humans, and given our limited ability to spot fake re-
views,this isn't a good sign.(为阿齐米的研究撰写的
Passage 5
根据第一段中“In my ninth-grade
writing class last year,I met a cowboy who saved his
town,a strict father who demanded his son earn
straight A's,and a modern-day Juliet who died of
heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her
young life.More than once,I found myself wondering
just how my students, who'd created these people,
knew their subjects so well,(去年,在我九年级的写作
根据第二段中“Most of the essays
filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence
that could be interpreted as a thesis()statement.I
was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the
question itself. They could have written pages on the
necessity of computers, but writing,in and of itself,
simply didn't strike them as important.(大多数文章篇
根据第三段中“The results were
staggering. The students took on diverse topics and
turned in stories,10 to 20 pages each, with characters
that broadened my view and touched my heart.
staggering。
stagger-
根据最后一段“I walked into class believ-
ing that writing is important as a means of communication.
However,my students demonstrated something more impor-
tant to me.When the final bell rang in June,I walked
away with a yearbook full of messages about writing's
most powerful significance-the ability to connect peo-
ple,to put us in another's skin,to teach us what it
项A“Teaching is learning.(教学相长。)”
Passage 6
根据第二段中“Mom bent over me,
her hands on mine, gently guiding small bits of cloth
under the needle to create dollhouse bedding. She also
169
taught me to make mini-blankets.With a little paint
and glue,Mom demonstrated that anything could be
故选A项。
根据第三段中“One day,after hours
of working on my fourth book,I took a break by surf-
ing the Internet and happened to notice the beautiful
dollhouses people posted on social media. They remin-
ded me of mine.I went to the attic, brought it back to
ny room and started updating it,(一天,在写了四个小
根据第四段中“During the mindless
hours of sewing and furnishing(布置家具),I listened
to audiobooks about the history of dollhouses, learning
that they were not invented for play. There's a long,
rich history of people in hardship turning to dollhouses
根据最后一段中“The truth was I
myself needed art to save the day.Mom was then slip-
ping away from me owing to progressive memory loss.
The only topic we could discuss with any genuine joy
was the update of the dollhouse. She loved retelling its
history一those old memories.(事实是我自己也需要
truth was I myself needed art to save the day.Mom
was then slipping away from me owing to progressive
memory loss. The only topic we could discuss with any
genuine joy was the update of the dollhouse. She loved
retelling its history一those old memories.(事实是我
house:More Than Just a Toy(玩具小屋:不仅仅是一
