Aristotle believed the face was a window onto a person’s mind. Two thousand years on, facial expressions are still commonly thought to be a universally valid way to tell other people’s feelings. A raised eyebrow suggests confusion. A smile means happiness.
Or do they? An analysis of hundreds of research papers that examined the relationship between facial expressions and underlying emotions has uncovered a surprising conclusion: there is no good scientific evidence to suggest that there are such things as recognisable facial expressions for basic emotions which are universal across cultures.
Lisa Feldman Barrett, one of the authors of the study, says, “We surprised ourselves.” They found that, on average, adults in urban cultures scowled(怒视) when they were angry 30% of the time, which meant that some 70% of the time they did not scowl when angry.People also scowled when they were not angry. Dr. Feldman Barrett says, “They scowl when they’re concentrating; they scowl when someone tells them a bad joke; they scowl for lots of reasons,” A scowl, the researchers concluded, is certainly one expression of anger. But it is not the only way people express that emotion.
All this raises questions about the efforts of information-technology companies to develop artificial intelligence algorithms(计算程序) which can recognize facial expressions and work out a Person’s underlying emotional states. Microsoft, for example, claims its “Emotion API” is able to detect what people are feeling by examining videos of them. Alex Martinez, another of the study’s authors, however, expressed scepticism(怀疑态度).
Given that people cannot guess each other’ emotional states most of the time, Dr. Martinez sees no reason why computers would be able to. “There are companies claiming to be able to do that and apply this to situations in ways I find really scary and dangerous, such as hiring people,” he says. “Some companies require you to submit a video CV, and then this is analyzed by a machine-learning system. And depending on your facial expressions, they hire you or not, which I think is based on a dangerous hypothesis(假设).”
8. What does the author think of Aristotle's belief about facial expressions?
A. It has not been literally challenged so far.
B. It was already disproved many years ago.
C. It is in line with most common people’s opinions.
D. It was faced with great disagreement when first put forward.
9. What's the conclusion of the new analysis?
A. Facial expressions are hardly recognizable.
B. Underlying emotions aren't easy to express.
C. Different cultures tend to express emotions in the same way.
D. Facial expressions don't necessarily reflect what is deep down.
10. What did Lisa Feldman Barrett find out about scowls?
A. They are not always related to anger.
B. They are the strongest expressions of anger.
C. They are not frequently used in urban cultures.
D. They are used to respond to had jokes most of the time.
11. What might be Alex Martinez's thought on “Emotion API”?
A. It is scientific. B. It is absurd(荒谬的).
C. It is progressing well. D. It is scary for job hunters.

Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees(黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.
Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member. “That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.”
Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said.
Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mother’s back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species(物种) out there. That is meaningful in its communication, so that's not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter.
Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.
“The vagueness(含糊) of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,” she said. “Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.”
12. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter?
A. Memorizing specific words.
B. Understanding complex information.
C. Using voices to communicate.
D. Communicating messages on purpose.
13. What did Dr Shultz think of the study?
A. It was well designed but poorly conducted.
B. It was a good try but the findings were limited.
C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.
D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.
14. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Difference. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Connection.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Chimpanzee Behaviour Study Achieved a Breakthrough
B. Chimpanzees Developed Specific Communication Skills

Charisma
Are leaders born or made? Many leaders throughout history—such as Gandhi, Churchill, Napoleon, and Martin Luther King—seem to have a special quality that made them powerful and persuasive(有说服力的). We can identify that quality as charisma, but can we explain it?
Charisma means a natural ability to attract other people and make them admire you. It is a complex mixture of social and emotional skills. 16 Richard Wiseman, a famous psychologist, points out that there are three key qualities of a charismatic person: They feel their own emotions strongly; they inspire strong emotions in other people; and they are unaffected by the influences of other charismatic people.
You needn’t worry if you don't have these qualities. 17 Wiseman says that when you come upon someone who is charismatic, you can copy his or her body language and facial expressions without realizing it. This is called mirroring, and it works partly because people’s behavior influences their emotions. 18 He proves his point by giving the example of smiling back at someone who smiled at you. Your smiling back suggests that you accept the goodwill from the other person and hope to give it back to him.
19 For example, if you stand up straight and raise your chest, you are more likely to feel confident and inspire others to feel confidence in you. Another expert says that the most charismatic people are usually good listeners. They give others the impression of being focused and modest.
Charisma plays a large part in success because it is linked to self-confidence. 20 One successful leadership coach points out that you need to come by your skills and techniques naturally. She warns that if the personality you project is not real, you may come across as insincere.
A. This type of physical presence can be used to great effect.
B. Today there is growing evidence that charisma can be learned.
C. Charismatic persons should be active and sensitive to their surroundings.
D. It needs to be recognized that charisma is more than just being optimistic.
E. It helps to make strong personal connections and communicate effectively with others.
F. But it is worth noting that charisma can’t be a pretended ability although it can be learned.
G. He adds you're unaware of picking up others’ gestures, but you know it makes you feel good.

“I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel,” said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram's mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He did all he could out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps. With the money he earned by selling them he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a “bank” almost full of what he called his “shrimp money.”
The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.
But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one—a tag marked $4.75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.
He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his “bank” and counted its contents. “Three dollars and twenty-two cents!” he cried. “I’ll have that ring before another week.” Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

[参考范文]
At the end of the week, he had the sum he desired. Hurrying to the shop where he had seen the ring, before going inside he gave one swift, almost frightened look into the window. Could it be gone? No, there it was flashing and shining as before. That evening, he placed it on his mother's finger. She looked at it in surprise. “It is yours, Mother,” he cried, proudly. “I bought it with my shrimp money.” “My dear boy,” said his mother, while something as bright as the shining stone flashed in her eyes, “not one of those ladies can value their rings as I shall value mine.”
Years afterwards, Hiram learned what he had bought was in fact only glass, and he decided to tell his mother. “Did you know it then, Mother?” he asked. His mother nodded. “And you never told me.” “It was brighter to me than any real diamond,” she said. “The brightness I saw flashing in it was the unselfish love of my boy.” Indeed, nothing in the world is more precious than a sincere heart.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
