Last weekend, a terrible rainstorm hit our neighborhood. I stood by the window and watched a big old tree being ____16____ by the scary winds. Its branches twisted (弯曲) and turned, but their natural flexibility (柔韧性) helped them avoid ____17____ into pieces. The green leaves held tightly to the branches, since they knew their survival ____18____ the tree. Even the powerful trunk leaned (倾斜) backward a little, fighting hard to keep its place in the ground. When the storm finally died down, the old tree still stood there. It was straight as before, though it looked ____19____ as leaves had been away from its branches. What mattered most was that it had won the battle against the storm.
For days, I kept thinking about why this tree had caught my interest so deeply. Gradually, it became clear that it wasn’t about the tree, but about the ____20____. Those unseen parts dug deep into the earth, giving the tree the ____21____ it needed. Without it, the tree would have easily fallen in the storm. It was the strong roots that helped the tree stand ____22____ the powerful winds.
This made me wonder: How deep are the “roots” in my own life? ____23____ next time you feel stressed by schoolwork, when you’re sad about a bad exam result, or when life’s storms hit you hard, remember to go back to your roots. Life is ____24____ storms that will make you bend, or even lose some “leaves”. When facing ____25____, you might bend, but never break. But the deeper your roots are, the higher you stand. Your true strength lies in your own “roots”.

If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don’t actually touch each other. There are little gaps between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown shyness”.
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it’s a tree’s method to stay healthy. Trees are always fighting with each other for sunlight and water. By keeping a certain distance from each other, they reduce the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees. Leaves are very important, as they help trees get sunlight and water. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading. “Tree sicknesses can come from insects or even be the insects themselves,” Lowman says. “By separating themselves from others, trees protect themselves like we do when we keep our distance from sick people.”
Crown shyness mostly happens in tropical (热带的) trees, but the lessons are also true for other trees. Trees with more space grow bigger and stronger. Lowman says we should take good care of trees, just like we take care of a rose garden. Healthy trees give us better shade, and they clean water better. “The healthier the forest, the more benefits the owner will get,” says Lowman. “When a tree gets sick, don’t just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds,” the expert adds.
So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbours. After all, sharing space wisely keeps everyone healthy, whether you’re a tree or a human!
29. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. What crown shyness means. B. The beauty of gaps in forests.
C. How trees grow leaves in forests. D. The importance of forests in nature.
30. Why do the tops of trees keep their distance from each other?
A. To let more sunlight reach the ground. B. To protect leaves and avoid diseases.
C. To help more rainwater fall into the forest. D. To create more living areas for insects and birds.
31. What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A. Sharing space wisely is good for all. B. Competition is important for growth.
C. Humans must live in balance with nature. D. Being alone all the time stops getting sick.
C
Imagine opening your history textbook and seeing Confucius, Leonardo da Vinci, or Marie Curie step out of the pages to talk to you! Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), this dream is becoming reality in classrooms around the world.
In Wuhan Gangcheng No.4 Middle School, students ask questions of a 3D-animated Confucius (孔子). One student once asked, “Does ‘ren’ (kindness) still matter in a world full of competition?” The digital Confucius smiled and explained how kindness helps people live together peacefully. This isn’t magic—it’s AI! Using tools like Jimeng and Keling, teachers can turn flat textbook pictures into lively characters. These AI tools add details to old paintings, make the characters move, and even let them speak. For example, Aristotle can now explain logic with hand gestures, and Li Qingzhao can recite her poems with gentle expressions.
AI isn’t just fun; it’s changing how we study. In Nanjing’s Stone Shadow Art Museum, AI turns ancient Chinese paintings into modern art styles. When visitors use a special flashlight, ink-and-wash mountains become colorful Impressionist scenes. This mix of old and new helps us understand culture better. In classrooms, AI helps students learn at their own pace. A smart system can give students different learning materials based on their questions. An AI wrong-answer notebook finds mistakes and makes practice plans. In a history class about the Maya civilization (玛雅文明), students explore how climate change affected cities through AI-made videos. “History isn’t just dates anymore,” says student Wu Boyu. “It’s like touching the past.”
However, there are problems. Some people use AI to alter historical figures in improper ways, so we need relevant rules to prevent this. Also, while AI helps us learn, teachers remind us not to forget the human side of learning—like sharing ideas face-to-face. Looking ahead, AI will do more. Students might use AI to understand art or create digital exhibitions. As one teacher says, “Technology isn’t the goal. It’s a way to help every student shine.”
From old books to smart screens, learning is always changing. With AI, textbook characters aren’t just words anymore—they’re friends who guide us through the amazing journey of knowledge.
32. How does the writer begin the article?
A. By sharing a famous old saying. B. By presenting an imaginative scene.
C. By telling an interesting history story. D. By introducing great people in history.
33. Why does Nanjing’s Stone Shadow Art Museum use AI?
A. To teach visitors painting skills. B. To protect Chinese paintings well.
C. To create exact digital copies for sale. D. To display traditional art in a modern way.
34. What problem is mentioned about using AI in education?
A. AI makes students lazy. B. AI is too expensive for schools.
C. Students can’t use AI properly. D. Students lose interest in learning.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of AI Development B. The Problems of AI in Classrooms
C. AI Makes Learning more interesting D. AI Brings Textbook Characters to Life

Scene 1
Living room in Mr Frank’s house,
Mr Frank is sitting on the sofa, looking sad. Lestrade enters.
Mr Frank: Good morning, sir. Please sit down and have a drink.
Lestrade: Good morning, Mr Frank. Thank you. So tell me about your case.
Mr Frank: Well, I live alone. My father passed away last week, and he left me a famous painting. I locked it in the safe (保险柜) in the living-room yesterday. When I got up this morning, however, the safe was open and the painting wasn’t there!
Lestrade: I see a necklace near the open safe. Does anyone know about the painting?
Mr Frank: I showed it to only two people—Zoe and Jimmy. They both work in my house. Oh, the necklace belongs to Zoe. I saw her wear it last week.
Lestrade: I see. Outside the open window, there’s a lot of mud (泥) on the wet ground. Inside the room, the floor was completely clean. Can I see Zoe and Jimmy, please?
Mr Frank: Sure. Come with me, sir.
Scene 2
Garden behind Mr Frank’s house. The garden, full of roses.
(Mr Frank is sitting under a large tree. Lestrade is walking around slowly. The sound of quick footsteps is heard.)
Zoe: (Rushing to Lestrade.) Oh no, sir! It’s not me! I didn’t steal the painting. Believe me!
Lestrade: Calm down, Madam. Tell me what you did last night.
Zoe: I went to sleep after I did all the cleaning and washing in the house.
Lestrade: Is this your necklace, Madam? (Showing the necklace.) I found it near the open safe.
Zoe: Why, yes! It’s mine! I lost it three days ago. It was cheap, so I didn’t tell anyone. Sir, believe me! (Starting to cry.)
Lestrade: Madam, I never jump to conclusions. I need proof (证据). What about you, Jimmy?
Jimmy: I was on guard the whole night. It was raining and I didn’t see anything unusual.
Lestrade: OK. You two can leave now. (Turning to Mr Frank.) I know who the thief is.
Mr Frank: (With eyes and mouth wide open) You do? Who is it?
Lestrade: You, sir!
Mr Frank: Me? You mean I stole my own painting? Are you joking?
Lestrade: I’m serious, Mr Frank. The mud outside and the clean floor inside told me that probably no thief broke into your house. Before I came here, I had checked with the insurance (保险) company. They told me you had bought insurance for the painting. They would pay you 200,000 dollars if the painting was stolen.
Mr Frank: What about the necklace, then?
Lestrade: You stole it as well. You tried to make sure that Zoe’d go to prison instead of you. Mr Frank, I like being a detective. My dream is to find the real criminal and protect the person who hasn’t done anything wrong.

A. What the characters are doing. B. What the characters are saying.

On the first day of Grade 8 in 2003, Mr Luke greeted our energetic class as our English and homeroom teacher. He spoke with purpose and warmth, making it clear he would be a strict manager. He announced we’d learn 400 lines of poems that year by heart.
I was an awkward and restless 12-year-old boy, trying to understand who I was in my family. I wanted to know how I would ever memorize (记住) so many poems.
As the weeks went by, Mr. Luke had us enjoy poems like delicious dishes. He invited us to feel their rhythm, mood, and meaning. We would study the poet’s life and think about what made them write it.
One of the first poems we learned was To Autumn by John Keats, written in 1819. It praises the harvest season and nature’s richness, while also suggesting the coming of death and decay (衰败). Keats advises us not to worry about the future: “Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, you have your music too.”
Of course, we complained about having to memorize To Autumn and 20 or so other poems that year. There were romantic poems, funny poems and strange poems. I’d lock myself in my bedroom and go over these poems line by line until I could recite them by heart.
Somehow, I got through junior high school. When I went to high school, I still felt like an oddball (怪人), but at least there were a few more oddballs around. That autumn, when the leaves started to turn their bright colours, I found myself thinking of those same lines of Keats.
It took me years to realize the gift Mr. Luke had given me through poems. He believed poems could make me a better person and invited me to keep it as part of myself. He taught me what learning “by heart” was really about.
Mr. Luke’s goal for us

范文
Dear Miss Wang,
I am a student in Grade 9. I am a member of the Painting Club. It is very popular in our school.
Last month, we had an outdoor painting activity. We drew beautiful flowers and trees in the park. This activity impressed me most because nature gave us many ideas. From this club, I have learned how to observe the world carefully. Also, painting makes me feel relaxed and happy.
I think art brings color to my life. I will keep painting in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
